Had the Wednesday chicken fried steak special with three sides... great food, price, and service!

The brisket was very dry, the ribs had very little meat, the bbq sauce was basically tomato sauce, the mac & cheese was soggy noodles in water with no cheese, the green beans have sugar in them, the okra was old and stale. This was our first time eating here. We're relatively new to the La Vernia area. My overall impression was that this place is quaint. The food is OK, the staff is friendly, prices are very reasonable and the service is SLOW. I would say their specialty is fried stuff. My fried porkchop was great but everything else was not bad but nothing special if that makes sense. My husband got the bbq plate and it was nothing to write home about but not too bad. It was busy, it seemed like people around here like this place as it's been here forever. Not sure if we'd go back because the service is so slow. I think they might be understaffed in the back which I can't fault them too harshly for. If you find yourself in La Vernia, it's an OK place to eat. read more

Ok so we gave Witte's a 3rd chance and that's the very last time. The food is not good! My brisket sandwich was so salty I couldn't even eat it. Same for my husband's catfish. The potato salad was extremely sour tasting and the squash tasted like nothing. Even the French fries tasted awful and seemed like old frying oil was used. Sorry but that's it for us. Never again. So tired of wasting hard earned money on bad food. read more

Walk in the waitress didn't even look at me to busy watching wheel of fortune. Sat down waited 15 minutes no one even came by for my drink order. I ordered the brisket plate and was not at all impressed with it,it was loaded with a thick coating of what I believe to be the seasoning on the outside,also had to much fat on the slices ,although the meat was fall apart tender and their Mac &cheese was not at all tasty,I will not be returning again. This place has been existing for 30-40 years, (maybe longer) which should say enough. Family owned and is what a typical cafe type restaurant is all about. And no it's not comparable to Bohanan's, Ruth Chris or Myron's.. But for a reasonable price it's really great. Service is always good and of course they are busy, so you might have a lil wait. Grilled Pork Chops and the Rib Eyes are extremely flavourful. Just small country cafe that has not changed much since I was a kid and comfortable. Come as you are! read more

After being faithful client for several years the wait got longer and the quality keep getting lower and lower, with one of our last experiences being served chicken and rice soup that was sour, all I was told was no one else has complained. I would drive from San Antonio once a month to eat there, but not any more. In past visits the ladies working at the counter were full of Texas hospitality, but on my recent visit the lady taking orders was not friendly and was hurried and uninviting. She took my order, I paid, and I sat on a table to wait for my order. The order took a along time to prepare and when it was ready she gave my order to another costumer. When she relized her mistake she took the bag and plopped it in front of me and went on with her business. Not a single word was uttered, no thank you, have a great day. I work in the area. I have now been here twice. I usually try to wait until I've been somewhere a couple of times before I review it. Just ok. The first time I had the special of the day: hamburger steak with three sides. Overall, pretty good. But the first time, service was lacking. It was not very crowded, and it seemed we were always looking for our waitress. One in our party asked for something, and nearly the whole meal went by before she got it..... that was after asking a couple of times. Today, more of the same. I again ordered the hamburger steak with three sides. When the food came out, the food, except for the hamburger steak, was cold. And we never saw our waitress after she dropped the brought us our food. She never even came back to check on us. One in our party had to go searching for someone to get a "to go" container. I will probably be back because I work in this area, but so far: Disappointed. read more

Wife and I have been telling each other every time we passed by Witte's that we should stop by and try it. So, while my boys were visiting, we decided to go to dinner and stopped by. For a Friday, it wasn't too packed, no wait and sat down right away. Our server came by semi wiped down the table, picked up here tip from previous guest making a comment about how much was left. She left us our menus and would come back and take our drink orders. When she came back the table behind us and a small child that started to scream a little, that didn't bother us but seemed to seriously bother our server that she had to roll her eyes and grimace. Once taking our drink and food order she left what looked like as frustrated. She later came back with drinks and when asked if we could have another glass of water, she rolled her eyes and saying "gimme a minute" walking away making a huffing sound. Our salads came out and one of them had the wrong dressing on it. We told our server when they brought out our plates and she said with a tone that it was correct because that what was what she wrote. She looked at her paper and say that it was not, so she went and got the correct salad. When asked to have a couple of more drinks, she rolled her eyes as she walked away. Our food was not the best, sausage and brisket were dry, and the burgers were over done, burnt taste to them. Service wasn't good which I could understand why she was left the tip she got from previous guest. The food could be better. We asked at the register, which wasn't much better, what our servers' name was, It's Debbie. I hope they can work on these issues, because reading other reviews, they been able to. read more

The food was decent but the service was zero stars. We waited an hour for our food with no apparent reason for the wait. Our waitress dropped our drinks off and didn't come back until our food was finally ready. She didn't say a word just put the plates down and disappeared for the remainder of our meal. Brother decided this is where we were going to eat before my niece's graduation. My family came in and sat down. I was not too sure about how you place orders. My brother tells me a waitress would come over. It took like 30 minutes just for the girl to come over and take our order. I opted for BBQ. I am not sure how they run the kitchen. It seems like everyone's food came out at the same time. It took entirely too much time to get our food. The waitress never came in and checked on us. The BBQ was mediocre at best. The green beans were way different than I am used to. They were about the only good thing on the plate. The potato salad was also lacking. If you want a soda, it only comes in a can. It would be nice if they had a fountain drink machine instead of the cans. The building is an older building. The weird thing is the restrooms were right in the middle of the dining room, which was awkward. They had the AC going, but was still very hot inside. As a resident of La Vernia, I've traveled past this restaurant frequently but never stopped in until May 2012. The parking lot is frequently full, always a good sign for a restaurant. My wife and I made a point of stopping by for lunch. From the wait stafff (a nice touch for a BBQ place), I ordered the brisket plate and my wife ordered the fish. I noticed after ordering that lots of folks were eating fish so it may have been the lunch special on this day. To make a long story short, the fish was excellent. Yes, I stole a small piece of fish from my wife. :-) She didn't mind. The plate was overflowing with fish, fries, slaws, etc. Back to the brisket plate, hmmm, not so good. Actually the brisket was adequate -- nice texture, pretty tender, nice smoke ring. Fortunately, the BBQ sauce was served on the side because it was AWFUL! My wife also sampled the brisket and she also disliked the sauce. The sides were good and in good proportions. To ensure that I provide an unbiased report, my wife and I will eat at Witt's again soon and will update this review with those results. read more

Went here for dinner. I found the menu a bit confusing but the prices were good so I didn't mind so much that I inadvertently over ordered. The food was pretty good but portion sizes were uneven. The side of fried okra (great) was huge, but the side of mac and cheese (blah) was small. The fries were good, too. I got the beef brisket with a side salad and baked potato. Brisket was flavorful but a bit fattier than I'd like. Hole in the wall kind of place. Lots of families and kids. read more

Always place to go and known for being good, price and good eaten'. My son's were always excited for their burgers w/ that grill taste. I have lived in La Vernia for 10 years and the first thing I am asked when I say that I live here is, "Have you eaten at Witte's?" The answer is yes, twice! It was awful. The barbecue tasted like it had been sitting out on the stove all day, dry and unappealing. The decor was... if you want to call the hodgepodge of old Luby chairs, etc, decor, then it was not so good. The bathroom was the worse! I almost lost my lunch just going in there. We went back one more time to try those wonderful steaks we kept hearing about, but they were not good either. I will admit that we have not been back in about 5 years, so maybe they have made some improvements. They had no where to go, but up because it was one of the worst restaurants that I have been to. I ordered the rib plate and really enjoyed it! Their sauce is more vinegar based and not overly sweet and I prefer that.

Been coming here sense I was a baby. But my first memory is w my great grandma in the early 80's cheese burger n frys n plenty of ketchup. Every time I eat here I think of her. No place like home. read more

Steak is great but my favorite is their ham sandwich which is a huge piece of ham. Service has always been good and they have plenty of sides to choose from. They have everything from chicken fried steak to barbque. The only thing I dont like is all their vegtables are sweetened carrots, green bean both loaded with sugar. Visited on 5/14/09. What's nice about Wittes is you don't have to stand in line to order. You go in sit where you want and they wait on you. I went for lunch, chosing it because of the full parking lot. There was a good 60-70 patrons. Always a good sign. It was very clean, yet simple. I didn't observe any houseflies, which is one reason I don't like Rudys. The food was awesome. I had the beef plate. I also ordered beef, ribs, and sausage to go.
