This place is way better for breakfast than lunch for sure. Nothing is homemade. I hear the biscuits and gravy are. I should have gotten that. We went for lunch today. I asked if the chicken fried steak was homemade, no. I asked if the burger was homemade, no. I asked about the onion rings, no. My friend wanted a burger. He isn't a foodie like me, but i asked him if it was good. He said it was alright. I've never seen a patty so thin. For the price of that burger and fries, we could have gone to Burger Boy. His tea was $4. So, yeah Burger Boy is way better. I had the suggested chicken club. It had bacon and avocado. It was so dry and definitely not homemade. I substituted for the OR instead of fries. They were ok for frozen rings. She did say the ranch was homemade, and it was good. For $30.00, I'll take my business elsewhere. I don't live out there, but if I'm in the area again, I'll try their breakfast. The service was decent, but it took a while to get our food. They were not busy. I didn't get any pics. read more

I was heading back from San Antonio to Houston and decided to take the back roads. I was hungry for breakfast but did not want to stop at a sonic or McDonald's or any other major name brand restaurant. So when slowing down to avoid a highway patrol officer, I noticed Baldy's. I went in and ordered a really nice breakfast. They brought it to me and the coffee and the orange juice and the bacon and eggs were all perfect. They appear a little overwhelmed today so the slightly long wait was definitely worth it. Very good food very fun atmosphere so five stars. read more

Decided to come for lunch. They also serve breakfast all day so I was able to get pancakes . We tried the battered/fried zucchini and they were very good - perfectly sized - hot - crispy on the outside. I had the chicken fried chicken and it was also very good - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside - the white gravy had a good flavor. The onion rings were good - battered and deep fried and very tasty. The green beans were . . . meh . . . not my favorite. The pancakes were very tasty - a vanilla flavor - light and fluffy. The 'salad' - well - its lettuce and a few croutons unless you pay extra for cheese, tomatoes or anything else you wanted - that was the lame part of the meal. Our table also had the French Dip - the beef was tender and the au jus had a good flavor. The sweet potato fries were very crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. When we arrived the place was pretty full but they got us in. Our server was very pleasant and checked back appropriately to make sure we were ok. We'll come back - the food was good overall (except the green beans and the 'salad'). read more

I'd been going to Baldy's for a year or so, after doing duty at the coast. I usually get their 'high tower' which is an open faced roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes. It was generally pretty good but the last few times the potatoes were like library paste and the beef was nothing but scraps. So I tried the pastrami melt. Described as 'piled high with pastrami, cheese and pickles'. What I got was a hot dog bun with a few scraps of beef jerky...on half the bun. The other half had no meat at all. And the cheese was cheese whiz. They need a new cook. This one should be selling cars. read more

We so wanted to like this. We need somewhere to eat in the area, but sadly this is not it. First issue is they don't have diet soda. They have coke products and I asked for coke zero. No sorry, ok diet coke then, nope no diet. OK then, first time I've ever been anywhere that they didn't have any kind of diet soda. So I ordered a french dip, they call it a beef dip. The next part is on my husband. He found a picture somewhere that showed their onion rings. I think it was for somewhere else. I like the smooth coated onion rings, like beer battered. I don't like the panko crusted. But they have the rough panko type coating. I didn't know that and paid extra to get the onion rings. On to the sandwich, it could have been anything. It had no flavor, none. Even the au jus had no flavor. It was like brown water. So I ate one onion ring and half of a half of my sandwich. Hubby had fish and chips. Well guess what the coating was on the fish? Yep, panko. But he didn't care about that. But it was bone dry. I took a taste as I didn't have much I could eat. DRY DRY DRY. Now on to the fries. I dont know if we got the bottom of the barrel left over fries or what but they were all little pieces. The people at the next table got them too. They complained and did get a second order. Hubby didn't say anything and just ate several at once. We asked at the register, are your fries always micro? Or did we just get the crap left overs? The girl just giggled. So suffice to say we wont be going back. Oh, also our waitress must have been on her first day. Thats not a problem except I seriously doubt she had ANY waitress experience. My family just moved here and they have been looking for a new place with good food and I think I might have found it for them. We started off with the fried mushroom which I thought were good, they are breaded a little bit different but taste great nonetheless. I ordered the American combo which consists of a burger, fries, drink, AND a slice of apple pie all for $10! I will say the patty was a little thin so you might be wise in adding an additional one. Flavor was not bad especially for the price. Our server Sherry was very sweet and even took the time to introduce herself and welcomed us to the town of La Vernia. She was also very efficient and helpful and I can't wait to bring the rest of my family! :) read more

Best smothered chicken fried steak I've ever had the opportunity to consume. This is my third time here. The special today was Smothered chicken fried steak, with mashed potatoes, soup, and berry pie. Soup of the day: Albondigas. Soup certainly kicked this meal off on the right foot. Seasoned well. Very balanced flavors. Had the soup trinity: celery, carrots, and onion. Meatballs were small explosions of flavor. In a umami chicken broth. Served with saltines. The entree rolled out soon after. Piping hot, brown gravy smothered two thirds of the plate. Simple and generous. The plate had stewed veggies on the side. Mashed potatoes were perfect consistency, and salted just so, that the gravy didn't overpower them. Chicken fried steak had a golden brown crust and tasted like eating ribeye. Fatty enough to keep it tender and juicy. Also smothered. And topped with sauteed green pepper and onion. Dessert. Berry pie. Has the made from scratch taste and look. I opted for the cold serving. Perfect end to an already incredible meal. All for $10.99 Service was impeccable. These ladies were very attentive. Clearing plates as they were cleaned. Always friendly. And affordable. Baldy's is now my favorite go-to spot at work. If I didn't live in Austin I'd be a regular fixture here. read more

I work in the area and have now been here a handful of times. The food is always fantastic and the service is as well. I have no idea what the last two reviewers are talking about. Hard to believe service was that bad. The place just isn't that big... This has got to be the textbook small town diner. Absolutely LOVE the atmosphere! The menu is considerably lengthy and full of options considering the small diner feel. Anyway, the first time I went the special was a jalapeño patty melt and it was fantastic. The last two times I've eaten breakfast (omelettes) to be exact ...and I must say they were very large and super filling. Overall, just excellent. I'm a huge fan of this diner. Had the Monster Pastrami Melt, a lovelt concoction of pastrami, swiss, pickles, brown mustard on multigrain wheat. Great taste combo and hits the spot like the best grilled H&C. I was attending a service on Sunday at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX; when my friends recommended this diner for lunch. I'm so glad they did! It's been difficult finding good Fish & Chips down here in Texas. Even a few British Pubs didn't quite get it right. This little local restaurant did! My meal was served with Malt Vinegar as it should. The fish was hot and fresh and the batter had the best crunch while the fish was loaded with flavor. The chips (fries) were also hot and had an outer crisp with tender potato goodness inside. The restaurant is outfitted with a vehicle theme and the walls adorned with old vintage license plates. I spotted a couple plates on the wall from Ohio (my old stomping grounds). I was very impressed with the friendly hometown service and reasonable prices. I have paid double in San Antonio for a less than impressive fish & chips basket. Try this unassuming diner when you are in the area, you won't be disappointed! read more
