I'm always on the hunt for good Chinese which led me to Wok and Roll. Walking inside the place it is clean, and well decorated, with the relaxing sounds of a fountain. I ordered the orange chicken and a shrimp dish that was described as leaning toward Thai flavors with a lemongrass profile. I got the food home and shared it with my kiddos. The orange chicken is what you would expect and the fried rice was tasty. The shrimp dish was interesting and I'm not sure of what the flavors were but it did not remind me of any Thai dish I have had. Something was off with the egg rolls- while the egg roll was crispy on the outside the inside was a little doughy and the flavor tasted like something they used was close to the expiration date. They have a nice variety on their lunch menu, both traditional Chinese restaurant meals and sushi options. I had the duck special and was sorely disappointed. The duck was crispy but cold. We had a great experience at Wok & Roll. We shared crab Rangoon's, egg drop soup, California roll, sesame chicken, and walnut shrimp. Everything was fresh and yummy. It's gone down hill recently. It was ok in the past, but the fried rice I had recently was terrible and the white rice seemed off. I would be surprised if it had been unwashed and undercooked. The egg drop soup is really good, but many of the main dishes are lacking. It's gotten more expensive, but the price doesn't reflect the quality. We went after our elopement, and despite mentioning our celebration, nothing was acknowledged beyond a quick "congratulations." We even called ahead and were told to come, yet no one mentioned that so many items were sold out, from basic sushi all the way to the duck. They clearly weren't prepared, and we still spent $$$. Women looking for a new place for Asian food since we moved to San Marcos earlier this year. I'm so glad we tried wok n roll. Very nice little restaurant with plenty of seating and great atmosphere. The food was absolutely amazing. Had some Kung pow chicken and some sweet-and-sour chicken and it was delicious. Well prepared high-quality chicken meat. I'll call this "Not worth the Drive" review!! Let's start with the white rice: From experience and home cooking, this rice was an absolute flavorless failure! Mu best guess, they gave us 3 or 4 day old rice, and very hard. As I'm typing my jar hurts from chewing the pork jerky, oh I'm sorry there failures of sweet n sour pork.. Chicken Lo mein: I'll call this "strike 3"OMG, you can't be serious another tasteless dish. No salt, no flavor what so ever, we had to doctor this up garlic salt, hoisin sauce I have in the fridge. And let me tell you there is no helping this dish to even be called edible. Moo goo gai pan: Let's call this "Your outta here".... Same theme here, like the above dishes. Wait this had a bit of flavor, that is still lingering around in my mouth. And it's not a good lasting flavor either, I wouldn't recommend this dish. To be completely honest I will not recommend this establishment to anyone I know. Unless there's a change in the cook(s), someone with experience in Chinese flavor cuisine. If the owners like I would recommend they go to dine at "Broadway Cuisine" in downtown Los Angeles, with their authentic Chinese food. So all n all, I will not be going back to this non authentic Chinese tasting food restaurant in the near future. I would however return on a few conditions. 1 - When they hire a chef that is familiar with Chinese spices, flavorings. 2 - When the rice cooker is working properly, or I can bring my own washed white rice. 3 - When I can bring Szechuan peppercorn, ginger, garlic and sesame oil to help the cook acquire some flavor to their dishes. Still on the hunt for a good Chinese restaurant so we tried Wok & Roll. Hubby got general tso's and asked for chicken fried rice, and egg roll. Mom had Mongolian beef-spicy , fried rice, and egg roll, and I had something new, garlic beef, fried rice and egg roll. I also got crab Rangoon. The restaurant is really nice and the bathrooms were clean! Hubby said General Tso's was ok and he thinks they gave him pork fried rice. He liked the spice level and the rice. The crab Rangoon did not have crab at all and the egg rolls tasted old. The beef in garlic sauce was sweet and not tasty to me, but it's not my normal entree. Mom said Mongolian beef was ok as well. Place is ok for to go orders. They will be ready in around 20 minutes. Dining in is another matter. They are quite slow if you have a party bigger than 4. 6 of us ate today and took 57 minutes to get our food. We were the second set of customers for the day. Over 8 tables of patties of 4 our less we're seated during that time. All of them except one table received their food before us. The 8th table received their soups before we did. The waiters did not serve our table again. One waiter brought the soups and another brought the food. We had ask for to go boxes to get back to work. We had to check out at the to go section. We spoke to a person who said he was not the manager. No apologies were offered for the delay nor were any gestures made as an apology. read more

Really enjoyed the food here. I got the wonton soup. It was a broth with a bit of cabbage which I loved and two wontons on the smaller side along with crispy noodles on the side. I have to say the wontons are the best ones I have ever had. I can usually decipher different tastes but I can't figure this one out. Maybe a bit of a smoky flavor. The egggroll was very good and all the ingredients inside it were fresh! That says a lot if you can notice that. I had shrimp with broccoli and all the ingredients were fresh and perfectly prepared. My husband got chicken fried rice which was a rather hefty serving. The only not so positive were the plants on the edge of the window sill. It just makes it look junky. There's a dearth of decent choices for Chinese and Japanese restaurants in a college town like San Marcos, although my wife and I love Don Japanese. For Chinese, we've tried Xian Xian and thought their offerings were fine but selection was limited. Our neighbors suggested we try Wok & Roll and that's where we headed for lunch. On our first visit, I tried their Salt and Pepper Pork while my wife opted for their Salt and Pepper Shrimp with a side order of California Roll. Both dishes were good (although I thought they were a bit chintzy with their fried rice) and the California roll tasted fresh. The hot and sour soup was also on point. For our second visit, we tried their pork lettuce wraps (quite good) as an appetizer. My wife ordered a bowl of Wonton Soup and I ordered the Salt and Pepper Pork once again. I was going to order the Sushi Plate with chicken teriyaki until I was told that order doesn't come with rice. What?!!! The Wonton Soup was disappointing. It lacked robust flavor, like water with a hint of chicken stock. The dishes were served quick...way too quick as the pork lettuce wraps were followed in quick succession by the soup and salt and pepper pork orders. We didn't have time to finish our appetizer before the entrees were served. As it was, we felt hurried eating the lettuce wraps lest we risk the entrees getting cold. I firmly believe good restaurants can synch timing of delivering appetizers and entrees to allow ample time for diners to savor their meal. All in all, not a bad experience although they could work on timing their delivery. read more

Egg drop soup is also good. I prefer the CA Deluxe roll from here, but I've also tried multiple others and loved them too. For lunch I ordered ice tea, sesame chicken, white rice, egg roll, hot and sour soup, and added the 4 piece California roll. The sweet tea was super sweet and the waiter saw I was diluting it with my water and did refills as half and half, which was nice he noticed. The food however was not enjoyable. The egg roll and sesame chicken tasted burnt. The nori in the pieces of California roll was gummy. As I chewed it stayed in one piece, I t's rather comical until you realize your spent $21 on horrible food. They give two really small scoops of rice on the plate. It's crazy that the cheapest things (rice and nori) are being skimped on and detracting from the meal. I did express this feedback to the waiter (specifically the burnt taste and the nori) and he said sorry and offered a to go tea. It's sad because my family has come here frequently since they opened, but recently the food has been a miss. Do yourself a favor and skip eating here and go to Panda Express at least they are consistent on how they cook their food. I wish them the best on turning things around. read more

The reason for my low review is I ordered VEGETABLE spring rolls and received pork spring rolls instead. Terrible Customer Experience: Ordered TOGO. Called back to check if my order was ready. The staff member told me yes so I left the dog park with my dog to get the food. I arrive and tell them I'm here for my order under my name. The lady tells me the food is actually not ready and asks me to sit at the bar. While this is happening, my dog is waiting in the car. Immediately when I sat at the bar, I saw a bag of food on the counter. I waited 25 minutes and saw other people get their food while this lady was chatting with her coworkers. TLDR: My local go-to for budget nigiri/sashimi, duck. Better ambience, busier/longer wait, no drop in sushi/nigiri quality, still great waitstaff. The substantial makeover is truly beautiful. More privacy but still feels very open. I didn't visit the restroom. The prices have *not* ballooned in spite of the facelift (my overwhelming fear), the wait was longer but it was *much* busier than I'm used to seeing for early dinner hour, and the minimal waitstaff were as good as I ever had previously--very friendly while staying very busy. The quality of the sushi is still good too. No red clam, the waiter came back to tell me. When I replaced that nigiri with salmon roe/quail egg the sushi chef came to talk to me and say they only had the tiny roe, which I took. It was still verrrry frosty when I got it, the only order I regret tonight. I wish I'd saved room for the red bean ice cream instead. Smoked salmon nigiri was grand, as were my sake and unagi hand rolls. Still have the same Pinot Grigio, I am still a fan. This place is as good as it gets in San Marcos for Chinese food. Ok, that's a low bar and the place should really be a 3 star - but if you are looking for Chinese food, this is your option and I hope you are desperate enough to enjoy it. It's likely just all the poor parking taking up a lot of spots. It will handle a lot more people so come inside. You will be seated immediately, then immediately be asked what you want to drink before you look at the menu. So be prepared. Just as fast they will take your order and it will be at your table before you can imagine. While you are eating, in fact by the third bite, the bus boy will ask if you want anything taken away. It is so fast you would think they wanted you out of there. They really need to slow down as ironic as that sounds. The food seemed to be pretty industrialized. I think they get most of it ordered the way it is and just heat it up. The pan fried dumplings tasted good but the meat was hyper processed. The California roll had a crab meat that seemed like a paste of some sort. The consistency of a paste is what I mean. It tasted good. The wasabi was about as bland a green caulk as I've seen. There are a lot of nuances with wasabi - all lost with this version. I had the walnut & shrimp which I enjoyed. But the shrimp probably came out of the bag with the breading already on it. Again, tasted good, but there was little to no quality. Don't get me wrong. I like the place and would recommend it.
