The prices have *not* ballooned in spite of the facelift (my overwhelming fear), the wait was longer but it was *much* busier than I'm used to seeing for early dinner hour, and the minimal waitstaff were as good as I ever had previously--very friendly while staying very busy. The quality of the sushi is still good too. No red clam, the waiter came back to tell me. When I replaced that nigiri with salmon roe/quail egg the sushi chef came to talk to me and say they only had the tiny roe, which I took. It was still verrrry frosty when I got it, the only order I regret tonight. I wish I'd saved room for the red bean ice cream instead. Smoked salmon nigiri was grand, as were my sake and unagi hand rolls. Still have the same Pinot Grigio, I am still a fan. This place is as good as it gets in San Marcos for Chinese food. Ok, that's a low bar and the place should really be a 3 star - but if you are looking for Chinese food, this is your option and I hope you are desperate enough to enjoy it. The place has gone through a very substantial make over. It looks great. The parking lot is still a work in progress so don't worry if it looks packed. It's likely just all the poor parking taking up a lot of spots. It will handle a lot more people so come inside. You will be seated immediately, then immediately be asked what you want to drink before you look at the menu. So be prepared. Just as fast they will take your order and it will be at your table before you can imagine. While you are eating, in fact by the third bite, the bus boy will ask if you want anything taken away. It is so fast you would think they wanted you out of there. They really need to slow down as ironic as that sounds. The food seemed to be pretty industrialized. I think they get most of it ordered the way it is and just heat it up. The pan fried dumplings tasted good but the meat was hyper processed. The California roll had a crab meat that seemed like a paste of some sort. The consistency of a paste is what I mean. It tasted good. The wasabi was about as bland a green caulk as I've seen. There are a lot of nuances with wasabi - all lost with this version. I had the walnut & shrimp which I enjoyed. But the shrimp probably came out of the bag with the breading already on it. Again, tasted good, but there was little to no quality. Don't get me wrong. I like the place and would recommend it. Had a great time! They offer a lovely endless sushi and Chinese food option ($17). However, they do have a surcharge for uneaten sushi (we didn't indulge as we were too full). My boyfriend got the sweet and sour chicken lunch portion and it came with a crab Rangoon, rice, and an egg roll or soup. For my meals I got the miso soup (awesome) and fried dumplings (so hot and tasty) to share with my boyfriend. Then, I had them bring sweet and sour chicken and it was about a half portion which was good for me because I usually don't eat that much. I usually don't trust food by restaurants that culturally double dip, but the sushi here is tasty, and the service is fast. I had the sushi tower. The tower was creative, and it was yummy too. Well. I'll just be straight up honest here, it was bad. They now won't seat you if the whole party isn't there, which makes it difficult to go on ones lunch hour. 1 of us would show up and order drinks and food for the other to help get the food in time and eat it without inhaling it. Can't do that now. My friends and I each tried something different and enjoyed an appetizer. Prices are relatively affordable and portion sizes are nice as 3 of us walked away with a box to go. Hmm. Okay, so here are the pros: quick delivery. Food arrived warm. Generous portions. My partner ordered the sweet and sour chicken and it was perfecto. Rice cooked well (not too sticky, not too dry). Now onto the not so pros. As per usual, I ordered my favourite Chinese dish with which I evaluate every Chinese restaurant: ma po tofu (Spicy Sichuan style tofu). Let's just say it left something to be desired :( The type of tofu used was not right (you're supposed to use silky tofu, and this was the firm kind with "skin"). The dish was spicy (which I had requested), but was not the type of spicyness that is typical of Sichuan dishes. The sauce is supposed to be very oily and liquid, but this sauce was really thick. I also adamantly dislike mixed vegetables (the chopped up peas/carrots/corn) in my Sichuan dishes (it's not authentic), but lo and behold - peas and carrots in my dish. Stopped by for lunch and was hesitant because of 3.5 stars, but so glad we came! Made it just in time for lunch special which was a great deal. I normally get combo fried rice which is perfect (extra soy sauce, no pork), but last time I got the peanut chicken fried rice which might be my new favorite.
