Attempted getting into the karaoke bar at Wok and Roll. Went up to the security guard to have my purse checked and walk through the entrance. Andrew, the security guard, came across my fast acting sugar in my purse and told me I was NOT ALLOWED to bring my cliff bar inside. I am a TYPE ONE DIABETIC - I need fast acting sugar with me everywhere I go since I get constant low blood sugars. I have to have (as prescribed by my doctor) fast acting sugar - which in this case was my cliff bar. Andrew told me I had to either leave my cliff bar outside the bar and call 911 if I had an emergency, or I could wait outside with my fast acting sugar while my friends enjoyed the karaoke bar. He also told me he had a "degree" in diabetes and understood my situation - obviously not the case. George, the assistant manager, discriminated against someone who has a preexisting medical condition (and turned away a type one diabetic). Told me to speak to a manager - I did the manager told me I needed a medical prescription in order to bring fast acting sugar into the bar. read more

I have ordered delivery from this restaurant often, loving that it's open late. Tonight I put my order together early, but not ready to place it until 12:30 since it shows on DoorDash that they close at 1:15am and at 2am on Yelp. I went to place my order at 12:35 and it said they were closed. I called the restaurant and was rudely told they were closed. I asked what time they closed since all of their hours online said they were still open. The woman on the phone again rudely just said "we close now" (it was 12:37, odd closing time). When I asked what time they closed tonight, she said 12:30 and hung up on me. This was a HORRIBLE experience from a restaurant I'm usually extremely happy to order from. Either their hours need to be updated online, or for some reason the rude woman on the phone decided they were closing early. Rented a small room for a birthday karaoke party. Wings and fries were good. We also ordered a pitcher of margaritas and Mai Tais. It was a good idea to offer drinks in a pitcher rather than separate drinks for everyone yet they we sooooooooo watered down, like I didn't taste any alcohol at all. Also the karaoke system was so hard to figure out. It was all in Mandarin even when we set the language setting to English. The app also all in Mandarin. It was all just so complicated. The light system was only in 2 settings, disco or all lights on. Yeah me of the waiter guys/bartender/ whatever he was, he was SO RUDE. Came here since it was a place opened late enough after we flew in. It was very quiet and not too busy. Couldn't tell you if that's their normal traffic or because it was almost 11pm. Our food came out quickly. It was pretty good. Beef chow fun is wonderful, beef stir fry udon was good but the chow fun was better. Triple delight was tasty and quite a bit so the price is worth it. Market roll sushi was mehhh not great but not bad either. I've known places to include gratuity on parties of 5 of more, but never on a party of 4, but oh well. Would I come back? I came here for Karaoke with a few coworkers and it was amazing. To get to the karaoke room, you have to walk through the restaurant to the back area and then you would see the bouncer. Set up was relatively easy, but there was a 10 minute delay in getting the room ready even though we have a 10 appointment for Karaoke. The song list was really extensive and they had a decent amount of fairly recent songs which I was surprised about. Usually karaoke rooms have a lag for newer songs. There are a lot of great sushi places in the Chinatown/Penn Quarter area and Wok and Roll is not one of them. I recently stopped in to get some sushi to go. I asked how long it would take to make a couple of rolls and was told no more than 10 minutes. There were only a couple other parties in the restaurant so I thought this would be an and quick meal. It took almost a half hour to make two sushi rolls and what I got didn't seem fresh. The tuna was mushy and the rolls were falling apart. I'll be sure to avoid Wok and Roll in the future. Wok and Roll has stepped up their games in the last couple of years and I am a huge fan. My first time coming here was less than a decade ago, when Chinatown was super hood, and all I wanted was an affordable meal to fill my cheap Chinese/Japanese craving. Wok and Roll pissed me off with their terrible quality of food; at the time, dishes tasted like they were stir-fried in MSG and sushi rolls came out with more rice than the fish itself. My 18-year-old poor college student in me swore that I'd never come here again. But I guess I broke that promise. For the number of times I've come here in the past few years, I think Wok and Roll hasn't gotten the credit it deserves. I've had their beef chow fun, lo mein, and even their sushi rolls, which have all tasted sooo good and filling. I mean how can you beat such a tasty meal for such an affordable price? This restaurant is a perfect everyday restaurant for good food and affordability because not everyone can afford eating at a Michelin-rated restaurant every day. Bottom line, it's a great place for people who are about to go to a game or depleted from walking around the Smithsonian. And for all the New Yorkers out there, this place reminds of me your typical East Village Japanese-style restaurant owned by Chinese people - so if you're feeling nostalgic, this will fit the bill. The karaoke machine was easier to navigate and you now have to enter from the side entrance instead of the restaurant. I'm assuming after many complaints, they rectified the problem. (I'm not sure what the specific name was, but it came in a HUGE bowl and was only $10. It included a large portion of duck, noodles (which she loved), bok choy?, and more noodles. She mentioned several times that she really enjoyed her meal. I ordered the 2 sushi rolls from the lunch special that came with soup. A disappointing meal at an interesting location. I was in town and near Chinatown and craving sushi. I went in a weeknight and was seated immediately and the waitress was immediately ready to take the order. The menu had a lot of choices and I picked two rolls and some fried veggie dumplings. Not recommended. They brought out a small bowl of fried noodle strips with egg roll sauces while I was waiting, which I associate with touristy type Chinese restaurants. They were okay, but did not portend well for the meal. The next to arrive was the veggie dumplings- huge oversized and very thick, like a pancake wrapped around corn and green bean mixture. Each was maybe 4 inches long and a few inches thick. If you like thick dough dumplings maybe these would appeal to you. They were fairly bland and the veggies inside were like mixed frozen veggies. I put some of the brown sauce on them, but only so much you can do. There was a whole plate of them, maybe 4 or 5, and they were only edible, didn't really taste good. Got two rolls, but I had difficulty determining which one was which that I ordered, had to confirm that I had gotten the right rolls by asking them which was which. The great California roll was supposed to have roe, was very subtle and small. The spicy tuna roll was heavily minced and weird texture. Have had better sushi at Walgreens which was a block away, disappointing. I wanted to like this place, had a fun name, extensive menu, sushi bar, karaoke bar, and the history of the Lincoln assassination. Extremely rude and racist service staff. Reserved a room which was fine, that is, until the end. The staff rushed in and yelled at us to leave, then proceeded to throw out our FULL drinks. We told them we are still drinking them but they refused to listen. They also would not refill the drinks they said it was our fault for not speaking up before. The karaoke aspect of Wok and Roll is amazing -- it's fun and a great way to spend time with friends and just fool around. However, I wouldn't bother coming here just for the food. It's not bad and is definitely a good, convenient choice if you're already in a karaoke room, but it's generally pretty overpriced and mediocre. If you just want some decent Chinese food to fill you up while you're having a great time singing along with a random pop artist, then Wok and Roll is a good choice. Bottom Line: Sushi, Chinese food, karaoke bar and private karaoke bar in the historical and infamous Surratt Boarding House in Chinatown. Wok and Roll is a little bit of a tough place to review because I think the experience of eating sushi, having a Chinese dinner, moshing in the crowded karaoke bar or sequestering yourself away from friends in a private karaoke room are all very different experiences. I didn't eat here but did spend time in a private karaoke room and bumping elbows in the super crowded upstairs karaoke bar. I'm not a karaoke fan but overall this was a good experience. The room was adequate and the song selections were good. I also like that we could control the climte in the room. What would have made karaoke better is if their was waiter/waitress service in the private room, especially since we had to pay a mandatory 18% gratuity. I didn't have any drinks during our two hour rental because it was a mob scene at the bar and not worth the effort or wait to get drinks. I saw a few other Yelp reviews where they found the bag check experience to be unpleasant. I understand the need for security but it was awkward when the bouncer asked my friend to open her birthday gift (a bracelet). Something that is neat about Wok and Roll is that it is located in the infamous Surratt Boarding House where John Wilkes Booth planned, and others like Mary Surratt, conspired the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In the heart of China Town! They are a go-to spot that is always open with seats. I usually come here for karaoke and food. If you are a high maintenance person who needs AC, then this isn't the spot for you. They use stand up fans that rotate to insolate the establishment. The food is okay, complimentary fried noodles and dip are served prior before the order, it's a hit or miss because sometimes it is stale. The shrimp noodles are actually pretty good! Karaoke is upstairs and can be fun but the establishment definitely picks and chooses their own rules. I have come here 4x for karaoke and never paid any entrance fee. This is also one of the only places in DC that I've seen bubble tea, but it's pretty mediocre. HAPPY HOUR Came here on a Wednesday afternoon for the tail end of their happy hour, which offers $1 pieces of sushi and $2 bottles of miller light or bud light. Pretty good deal. Sushi to choose from includes Salmon, Tuna, Eel, Squid, Octopus, Avocado, Red Snapper, and an egg one I decided to stay away from. The food was fine, nothing special, just typical of what you get most places. But ... The waitress comes around to take our orders, asks small or regular size, and on the lunch menu there's two prices, $8 or $9, so most of us say regular size. They charged us for the dinner portion, so about double the price. To make matters worse, the $1 (on the lunch menu) add-on that some of us ordered was $4. And to add on, tip was included. So, go somewhere else, it's not worth it, the same food or better is elsewhere, and there's no history left in the building (just take a picture outside). Cute little eatery. I came here a year ago with my son. Friendly service, and food is flavorful and fresh. The boba tea ($3.50) was delicious and smooth. I ordered the sesame milk tea, and my son had the chocolate milk tea. To go with our meal, my son ordered the Sesame Beef ($13.95) and I ordered the Crunchy Salmon avocado sushi roll ($7.00). We got some steamed rice ($2.00) to go with our meal. He couldn't finish his meal, so we had to bag the leftovers. Oddly enough, there is a 5 cent fee for bagging part of your meal in Washington DC. Find a different job then if you don't like people and serving them. When we first arrived, I went to wash my hands. Nothing about this place is upscale but we were down for the challenge. But in the restroom I decided this place is actually in deep water if the health department shows up- no soap, no paper towels, no tissue on the roll... Unsanitary. Ate here while doing research for an upcoming historical tour I'm leading. During the 1860's this building was the Surratt Boarding House, which played an important role in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Did John Wilkes Booth like kung pao chicken? Moo shu pork? History aside,the food and service were both good and I will come back again with our Meetup tour group. Best karaoke in DC, hands down. What costs them (maybe) half a star is the steep price and the so-so selection. But the experience is great, and that's most important. It's one of the only places you can actually get a private room for your karaoke needs. The rooms are spacious, the couches are comfortable, and the TVs are large and in charge. We ordered drinks all night, and the service was great. The call button on the wall is an especially nice touch. What costs them a full star is the dearth of rooms. It's really hard to get a room here on the weekend. We've even tried reserving rooms in advance several times and haven't been able to pull it off (either they accidentally gave the room away, had a technical malfunction in one of the rooms, or were already reserved for the whole night). The one time I could get a room I've now learned was a completely random off-night where they weren't packed. If you can't get a room, you can sit at the bar and sing there, but then you have to withstand the stares of the staff/other patrons who judge your questionable singing abilities and even more questionable taste in music. If you're like me, belting out P.Y.T. and old Backstreet Boys hits all night will give you an appetite that can only be cured with some good late night Chinese. I wouldn't say their food is anything worth writing about, but it doesn't hurt that they're located next door to New Big Wongs and across the street from Mings.
