I was looking for sushi take out and I wasn't really impressed. I guess that's what you get from most asian restaurants. It isn't a bad option but I wouldn't say it's as good as grocery store sushi. *Please note, this review is ONLY of Wok N'Roll's bubble tea. My quest for bubble tea brought me to Wok N Roll-- I ordered a strawberry green tea with pearls, total was $3.65. FINALLY, edible boba in DC. The pearls were the perfect consistency-- they could use a little more sweetener, but the texture was right on. The tea itself was heavy on the juice, and sweet, but overall, this is the best bubble tea I've found in DC so far. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

More like Wok and Roll away!! Came here with my girl friends for dinner. Customer service is a foreign concept, the food was NOT worth the money! We had to wait 10 min after we were seated to get water, our waitress continued to rush us for our orders, and was extremely passive aggressive. After getting my dish, it was not what I expected and asked to exchange my plater, mind you I only took a bite. Our waitress said NO and then continued to say "let me talk to my manager". Oh, Wok and Roll. You and I have had a storied history this summer. There are times at lunch when all of the wait staff ignore me and I can't get seated at a table. There are other times where they are prompt and attentive. The food is your typical Chinese-American food + Sushi. This whole Sushi + Chinese-American food is something that I will never get used to. The Chinese food is pretty good. Not as greasy as most places. Just typical fare, that tastes a little fresher. The sushi is really hit or miss. I have had it a few times, and it has been a-OK. Then one day I got it to go, and it was horrifying. The eel was prickly (one piece literally scratched my throat). The salmon was so off that I couldn't even eat it. It was seriously bad. If you really want Chinese food and you are in the area, it may be your best bet. If you want Sushi, I don't know. I actually think the Sushi place inside Galley Place might be better. Ordered steamed veggie dumplings (big but could use a little more filling and sauce tasted off like beer), crab wonton (tasty), wonton soup (tasted off, like beer and only two wontons, wonton strips that came with it were very good though), and a shrimp tempura roll (only came with 5 pieces, used to getting at least 6 if not 12, was pretty good though). I've been to the Wok N Roll several times. Usually the sushi is pretty good, but I had fantastic sushi at Sticky Rice in Richmond and the Wok N Roll seemed less fresh. I tried several different rolls on this visit. The Rock N Roll roll was tuna and salmon. It had a slightly fishy flavor. We also tried the spicy tuna roll and the spicy shrimp roll. Neither one was anything to write home about, which was disappointing because the last time we ate here it was much better than average. Not sure I will return, given the other great restaurants in DC. Have you seen my review of Brasserie Beck? This place was OK and has interesting history, but if you can only eat one meal in DC, go there instead! read more

It was the only sushi spot open past midnight in Chinatown, so that's your disclaimer. Of all the AWESOME asian food you can get in Chinatown DC, this place isn't really it. But late night food options are usually slim in this part of town. Now, it's better than the hood "chinese" food corner fry place, so there's that. I don't really eat sushi, and based on the look of this place, I wasn't going to start here. I order the chicken spring rolls for appetizer and chicken and noodle for dinner. The rolls weren't bad, pretty tasty actually. The noodle were ok. Didn't blow my socks off, but satisfied my hunger. The best thing about this place? The spicy mustard they brought to the table with my egg rolls. I wanted to the steal the whole bottle. I love mustard, and this stuff was off the chain. Would I eat here again? Wok and Roll, as people mention, is a dingy restaurant which has been there for a while in DC's Chinatown, so you should have low expectations for the atmosphere of this place, and the food is hit-or-miss but mostly just average. I've been here a handful of times. My first visit was for Happy Hour. Specials are pretty good, with $1 sushi pieces and cheap beer. The drinks are fairly large , and strong, so it makes for a good HH. At that visit, I enjoyed the sushi very much (salmon, tuna, mackerel, tofu skin( inari-zushi), eel). My most recent visit I was definitely let down. I tried the shrimp tempura roll and it was as if it was cooked the day before and just stuffed back together 5 hours earlier. The shrimp was chewy and the tempura flakes were mushy, the rice was stale, and the seaweed was soggy. I wanted to send it back. Do not order the shrimp tempura. Another roll was the special roll with salmon and avocado on outside and mixed seafood on inside. It was kind of bizzarre, and if you are not one for mushy textures, then don't order it. The mixed seafood was in fact some wet crab meat and cooked octopus, and white tuna (or mackerel?). It was OK, I ate it all. Another order of salmon sashimi tasted average. Slightly chewy, which means it may not have been a fatty part of the salmon. It was served with shredded radish and a piece of shiso leaf, which scored points for presentation. My friends ordered chinese dishes and they were just average. The General Tso's chicken was not spicy at all. Ambiance: slightly dark; dining room about average size,; some tables too close to each other for comfort,;a few large tables for big groups; seems dirty all around--especially the bathroom--gross! Service: the waitstaff were always bustling about cleaning up tables and taking orders. You have to wave them over for anything or they will not see what you need , e.g. water refills or chopsticks. Ordered from here on Sunday 2/17 - I actually thought the food was decent and reasonably priced, and for delivery it came relatively fast. I got the Shrimp Tempura Roll, the Cucumber Roll and an order of the original Wonton Soup. My friend got the Kung Pao Tofu and they were extremely accommodating. She has a horrible gluten allergy and the woman who took her order was able to tell her that the Kung Pao sauce has Soy Sauce in it which contains gluten, so they made an order especially for her with no Soy Sauce in it (warning of course that the sauce would lack color as a result), and also gave her soft Tofu instead of fried Tofu due to gluten, too. The Shrimp tempura was actually deveined which is more than I can say for specialty sushi places like Sushiko in Bethesda where you expect it to be, and it's not. The wonton soup wasn't the best I've ever had. The broth was a little too salty for me, and had an off putting fishy flavor to it that I don't think was supposed to be there. The sushi rolls were amazing. The summer roll refreshing and differnt.Sakura roll great. Sushi and can be made to specifications if you have allergies. The staff is efficient. What a rip off!! These people nickel and dime you. Two mixed drinks= $54 Bottle of Pinot Grigio said $35 on price list. Total was $55 Turns out there is a service fee, gratuity, and tax added to each ($8 tip per drink wow). We bought these beverages at the bar individually and did not have anyone bring them upstairs or anything to put in our private room. When I asked how the price jumped from $35 to $55 the staff members were rude and said we should have probably just Venmo'd each other on one transaction. Then the girl offered to walk my bottle upstairs to our room for me. I explained I bought a product, not a service since I would be pouring it myself. Then they purposely put in more food than what my family ordered to get more money. Uncle wanted a 4-count rib plate.. they brought him 4 plates of ribs and then argued with him that he ordered them all without offering to take them back and charged him for all 4. They seemed to pick and choose what they understood, meanwhile applying bologna policy charges to everything and not forgiving when you did not understand. read more

About 6:00 PM last night, a really good friend of mine texted and basically said that her plans to hang out with her sister fell through. I told her that she could rescue me from work... she wanted to know what we should do, and I suggested we head up to Chinatown for dinner and a movie. I was going to take her to Mehak's (which is this indian place around the block) but she suggested that we go here... of course, I'm easily motivated to have Asian cuisine as I completely adore it. As anyone who reads my reviews by now should realize, when I go to a new Asian place, there are a few staple items that I use to compare. When it's offered, I almost always grab the General Tso's Chicken and Egg Drop Soup. When I go someplace new and Thai, 99.97% of the time, depending on how much 'abuse' my associates put me through (you know who you are. :D ), I will have drunken noodles. So, I placed my order, ordered some beer. The prices were perfectly in line with basically anyplace you want to go in D.C., Most Asian cuisine is somewhat cheaper outside the city. The prices on the alcohol were somewhat lower than I'm used to, as I and my friend had a TsingCho. So, they brought out the Egg Drop soup, It was excellent, and just exactly what I had come to expect. If they would have stopped there, they would be 4-5 star categories. They then brought out the rest of the dinner, which consisted of sushi for her, and sesame chicken for me. Yes, I ordered General Tso... and they of course offered to fix it... I politely declined as I really didn't want to put her through the whole eating in front of someone thing. The sesame chicken was good, don't get me wrong. It was covered in enough sesame seeds that if they were poppy seeds, drug test failure would be a definite possibility and I'd definitely recommend it... the place would definitely get a 4 star, maybe even five if it wasn't for this error. Bottom line: Halfway decent Asian cuisine at a reasonable price. However bringing out the wrong entree is something that prevents a higher review. read more

If you get the sushi, they will do soy wrappers instead of nori seaweed paper, but they charge an extra $3 per roll. This review is for delivery only. I had to call to check on my order after one hour and apparently they went to the wrong house #, even though my order clearly said what number my house was. Customer service at the restaurant was terrible, they were arguing that they tried to deliver the food and no one was home, but in the end, I asked them what color my house was and they finally figured out they went to the wrong house! They did end up redelivering the food within 15 minutes after my call. Food was decent but the delivery guy was dumb. I may give them a second chance one day, but not anytime soon. read more

I would consider this place a proverbial little "hole in the wall," as it is not terribly obvious to spot from the outside, or easy on the eyes inside. The service, as someone else pointed out, is not great (definitely depends on the server), but I've been about four times, and absolutely loved the sushi. Manfriend and I went to hang out with some friend at their new home and they suggested we walk over to wok n roll. It looks like a hole in the wall and I tend to stay from places that serve sushi and Chinese food in the same place... too many genres at once - but wok n roll proved me the wrong. Pros: 1. Sushi (rolls and regular sushi/sashimi) was delicious - we had one roll that was incredible but sadly I don't remember the name (it was one of the crunchy ones, but not the one with shrimp. 2. chinese food was really delicious. 3. Price = very reasonable. 4. Ambiance = ok there really wasn't any bc it was a hole in the wall...but I liked that. :) Cons: Nothing that I can think of. read more

Not necessarily the best or the worst. Food was tasty. Had the sesame chicken, the Hawaiian roll, a salmon roll, and another roll. Service was iffy. Had multiple waitresses who didn't know we already had ordered drinks. Bill was set down in a quick fashion. This I enjoy the $1.00 sushi happy hour. Even I enjoy this location. I still say away from chinatown. This is like a hole in the wall sushi place with quick service. With some what ok Chinese food after found the sushi serving here. Nice but even this location has it down fall. Even some people sneak in for money bagging. Don't let them full you. You buy them a dish. They take it. Three hours later they take it back and get there money back. No good deed goes unpunished. But if your out of towner and what to go to a good sushi restaurant. This is one of those "don't judge a book by it's cover" kind of places. Walking by - it doesn't look appealing to stop in. But make that leap of faith. You won't regret it. Bubble tea: WARNING! Very very sweet!! Too sweet for my taste, maybe some sweet-tooths might like it, but not for me. It felt like they added gallops of sweetening flavoring syrup. The bubbles were hard and tasted stale/frozen. It reminded me of chips that you leave open for a few days, but it's tapioca. People that gave the good reviews like their bubble super sweet with hard stale bubbles, or they simply don't know any better. But for me personally, it's not my cup of tea. read more

The lunch "Spicy Shrimp" was a monochromatic dish of shrimp tossed with a barely cooked chopped white onion and some siriacha or tomato sauce. No other vegetables. It really should have been called "pan warmed greasy onion with shrimp and mildly spicy ketchup". Hot and sour soup was the passable stuff that is indistinguishable from 5000 other places across the country. I was one of two customers, so the "kitchen-was-swamped" excuse does not fly. Even by the low bar set by most places in Chinatown (and the fact that at $10, this is a "cheap" lunch in DC), this was pretty abysmal. I would not eat here again. read more

Having a sushi craving in Chinatown isn't such a bad thing. Not when Wok and Roll is close by. The place is small, bright, noisy. Hey, if I wanted ambience I'd go somewhere else and probably pay more. The sushi bar is tiny and way in the back of the restaurant. No matter, I waited for a seat, outside and checked out their menu. I also found out that they deliver. Nice! Although most of the restaurant caters to chinese food, the sushi selection was good, the fish looked real nice and fresh and the guys preparing the food looked like they knew what they were doing. The roll selection is HUGE and tasty. I started off with a Tuna Lover roll which consisted of Spicy Tuna on the inside as well as avocado with Tuna and more avocado on the outside with some roe for color and that awesome pop! I followed this up with their Market Roll. What a combination of flavors! It starts with Tempura Prawn, Eel, Cream Cheese, and Tuna on the inside, has the seaweed on the outside, and is drizzled with the Eel Sauce as well. WOW! Prices are good, will try delivery some time soon. read more

Was wandering around DC with zee boyfriend. We were coming from Mason, and I've been wanting to go to the International Spy Museum, so we walked all the way from the Smithsonian metro stop. This is because we didn't really know what to do beforehand. Least to say, we kinda got lost and passed the Spy Museum and ended up just going to Chinatown. It was then that I got really hungry and started craving Chinese food. There were lots of options of course, but what got us to go to Wok and Roll was the friendly African-American man outside cheerfully giving out flyers to go there. At first, we just passed by the place, but after looking at the flyer more, we headed back and went in. The outside looks really old and rundown, but inside, it actually looks clean and nice. Definitely don't judge a book by its cover! My boyfriend and I were sat at a table near the sushi bar. There were multiple waiters/watresses that ended up serving us. It seemed that they were all helping each other, which we didn't mind as they were very attentive. I ordered the shrimp lo mein, and my boyfriend ordered curry chicken. We also got the Rainbow Roll to share. We had to get sushi. I mean, it IS called Wok and ROLL. Plus, we were right by the sushi bar. The curry chicken was not good. There wasn't very much soup in it, and for a curry CHICKEN, the very small pieces of chicken are limited as you can see in the picture. Also, too much onions? I like onions alot, but... that was too much for curry. The shrimp lo mein was good but average. I've had better shrimp lo mein at a small local No. 1 Chinese place. The Rainbow Roll was also good, but I think most sushi is good, so I guess my palette is not very trustworthy when it comes to sushi. The sushi seemed fresh, though. Overall, this place is average at best. I expected more from a Chinese Restaurant at Chinatown, but the good thing is that this place is friendly and has very good prices. :) read more
