I come to this restaurant when I can't decide whether I'd like American-Chinese food or sushi. Though the sushi isn't very high-quality, it's good enough to satisfy the occasional craving. With the entrees, it's really hit or miss. The entrees that don't involve anything fried are usually better. Most of the time I go with shrimp curry. The main reason I'm giving Wok N Roll 3 stars is that they have good happy hour specials. So I visited Wok and Roll with some family last week and had a good experience. Although the outside looked kind of scetchy we were told to come here by some friends. We don't have any good Chinese food by us so we were really glad to find a place like Wok and Roll. We knew it was a Chinese restaurant so we steered clear of the sushi and only ordered a veggie roll which had nice flavor. We ordered 5 dishes and they were all delicous except for the very oily Lo Main (the string beans and tofu dish were the most flavorful). Went here after the Cherry Blossom Festival because my friends and I were starving and boy did we make a BIG mistake to come here. Everywhere else in Chinatown was packed so we decided to come here. Key points: 1. Food was distasteful, I could have cooked something better than that at home. (ordered the chicken with spinach) It literally tasted like they just cut some pieces of chicken and boiled the spinach and just added them together and then placed it on a plate and gave it to us. There was no flavor whatsoever and we even had to ask for salt, which took them 20 min to give to us. 2. Ordered a Philadelphia roll and a spicy salmon roll, which was not good either. The Philadelphia roll was such a disappointment because they used smoked salmon that was cut too big and it was so hard to chew. The spicy salmon was a bit better although not the best. 3. The service was horrible we had to wait about 15-25 min. to get our check and have them come bring us a to go box. I wouldn't recommend anyone of my friends or family to come here because after this bad experience, plus I just read and researched about how they had a review from Jan. that this restaurant was infested with rodents and was going to be shut down due to uncleanness. read more

They call themselves a Chinese and Japanese restaurant but their Japanese food is the same MSG-infested garbage you'd expect from a high school cafeteria. I had to tell them 6 times to get a to-go box and then they had the nerve to try to charge me 6 cents for a plastic bag. The people here clearly do not understand English and they treated me poorly. If you are looking for better tasting Chinese food your better off eating out of a dumpster. I wouldn't even order this for 2 am delivery. I've gotten better service at Walmart. read more

My second time going to this one (I've been in the one in Adam's Morgan too) the service was very good. Though had happened to be the only one there for about 20 minutes. Ewww. We had the steamed pork dumplings - doughy with a flavorless filling. Spider roll - looked like canned crab meat, cucumber that may have also come from a can, and rice that wasn't sticky. Maguro - not terribly fresh but passable. And eel nigiri - note that eel should never ever feel dry, stringy, and chewy, or smell fishy. The ginger was even bland. Orange chicken was okay - chicken meat was fine, nice crunch, overly sweet (but, c'mon, it's orange friggin chicken, what do you expect), slight orange flavor but no depth at all to the sauce. Usually I don't rate based on a single visit but based on the freshness and quality I doubt there are any treasures hidden in this menu. (To be fair ... the tables were clean and service polite and fast. And they have Stella and blue moon for those who aren't into Japanese beer.) We got the chicken fried rice & beef lo mein lunch specials as take out. Soooooooooooooooooo greasy (the lo mein was greasier than the rice but even the rice was incredibly greasy). And the chicken tasted a little rubbery and funny. Maybe their Japanese food is better. read more

GREAT sushi for a great price. Can't speak to their other menu items but I have been very pleased with the rolls, nigiri, and sashimi I've ordered there. The only odd thing was the color of the sauce on the Dynamite roll.. definitely a little off-putting. Service is no frills. If you go in there knowing nothing about the menu you probably won't get tons of guidance. But the waitstaff is quick and efficient and I've never had to wait very long for food or drinks. After a long day of travel, we were looking for a local dinner spot for Sushi, rather than trying to get a table a bustling restaurant with a variety of menu options. Our tastes do not include raw fish but we enjoy cooked rolls which is what we were after. The experience at Wok and Roll was beyond disappointing from the moment we walked in until we left. The server didn't know the difference between the word "raw" and "cooked" and when we asked to speak with someone else about the menu choices, she wasn't able to process that either. She tried to tell us that all crab was served raw so clearly there was a communication gap. We probably should have left at this point but didn't want to be rude so we ordered. And felt the intestinal consequences all evening long. The food had very little taste and was poorly presented. The leaky, brown-stained ceiling and dirty restrooms could have been overlooked if the food was exceptional but it was far from that. When in Chinatown, best to walk right past this place. There's got to be somewhere better. After all, it's Chinatown, right? read more

Room was clean but that's about all I can say positively - karaoke system was buggy and the drinks were overpriced and poorly mixed. A pitcher of "Mai tai"s was $50 and consisted of 1/5 rum and 4/5 orange juice/sour mix, Nevermind that the standard mai tai recipe calls for two types of rum, almond syrup and pineapple juice. They offered to rectify but freely admitted they didn't have the proper ingredients. I wouldn't normally care but as a standard menu item and at that pricepoint we expected more. Came here for karaoke. The price for the room was definitely reasonable for a Friday night, $45 for a room that fit about 10. The music selection was pretty comprehensive, and service was good. However, it was very confusing as to who was coordinating the rooms. I arrived a bit before my scheduled time at 10pm and staff informed me that the room wasn't yet ready. Around 10:15 I got a bit nervous because no one had informed me of the status of the room, and I didn't see the person I initially talked to about it. We got into the room around 10:20, which I thought was a bit ridiculous, what's the point of reserving a room if it's not going to be ready until 20min after? Overall it was a good experience, but a bit more attention and reassurance would have gone a long way. read more

They don't have a good food in there why ? - bubo tea ( the bubo sometimes is too soft, sometimes is too hard, the sugar is not mix with the tea, and the taste is too sweet, they put too many milk and water in there, it can not taste any tea) - dish ( TOO MUCH oil, after i eat it i need to drink a lot of water and it is not health, and the oil i did not know how many times they used, after it fired it did not look like golden its look really brown even to dark) - sushi ( the rice is warm, it should be cold. and the food is NOT fresh. ) I have been there more than three times, i always think they have a mistake or busy...but it is not what i think it is. read more

Everything tastes precooked. Nothing is spicy. We asked why our kung pao chicken wasn't spicy. The waiter pointed to the table sauce to spice it up, which sums up the service. On a long lunch hour walk today, I stopped in at the Wok n' Roll restaurant for the first (and last) time. Got the Beef Chow Foon for carry out. The noodles were cooked well enough, maybe a little bit greasy but I prefer greasy to all-stuck-together-and-won't-come-apart anyway soooo... but the beef was nasty. It was obviously a cheap grade of beef and the cut was too thick, making it too chewy -- and ewey. yuk.. Lots of places seem to fall into this trap where they lower the quality of the raw ingredients but then the food suffers and they lose repeat customers. I guess since they're located close to the Verizon Center arena they can get away with things like that more easily. read more

I can't speak to the Chinese food, but definitely won't be returning to this place for Japanese. I visited on a Sunday night, when the dining area was mostly, but not completely full. I first asked for green tea with tapioca. The waitress sped off before my companion could even order his drink and came back some time later with what tasted like watery, coconut flavored milk tea. It was bland and tasteless and the tapioca was a giant, fused ball of mush at the bottom. Possibly the worst bubble tea I have ever had and that is saying a lot. I would have sent it back on account of it being the wrong flavor, but after tasting the tapioca, I decided it was a lost cause. The sushi was entirely mediocre and priced a few dollars above most "cheap" sushi places in D.C. We ordered the spicy roll combo as well as a few pieces of sashimi, tamago, a daikon roll, and the wok n roll special roll. Most of them were mushy, fishy tasting, and bland, with the exception of the daikon roll, which was rather tasty. On top of the below average food, we had trouble locating our waitress throughout most of the meal. (We wanted to order miso soup and more tea, since we only received ONE of each with our meal, but she never came back). Near the end of the meal, however, she hovered as we were finishing our last few pieces of sushi, whisked away the plates, plunked down the check, and seemed to be encouraging us to leave as quickly as possible. Save your money and go to one of the many other restaurants near Gallery Place. Wok n Roll is not worth it. read more

First off I'd like to say that this is one of my favorite sushi places in the DC area. I love the Tuna Lover Roll and the Wok and Roll in particular. The food is fast, good, reasonably priced and well presented. I also think that the wait staff is highly attentive...although occasionally to a fault. There have been occasions where I've felt rushed by them to get out the door, especially during the dinner rush. That said, its a small restaurant with very limited seating so I can understand why they would want a fast turnover during the dinner rush. My only real problem with the Wok and Roll is their bathrooms. For all of the staff's extraordinary attentiveness to the diners the bathrooms are consistently dirty, smelly, and just generally disgusting. Garbage is often strewn all over the floor, the toilet bowls and sinks are obviously not regularly cleaned, and they often have run out of paper towels and toilet paper. The last time I was in there I checked both with see which I could tolerate and the answer was neither, so I left vowing to only get take out from them again. read more

So I ordered off of Foodler and I have to say that I am pretty disappointed in the service. First of all, the delivery person called and I asked him if he was outside which he replied yes to-but of course he wasn't. It took about 20 minutes of calling back and forth with the restaurant for him to finally show up. They kept asking for directions and what the buildings around me looked like--isn't that what Google and GPS are for? I haven't even tasted the food yet but from looking at it I know that I should have just ordered from another establishment. If you are going to offer delivery services please make sure that a) you know where the residence is b) make sure that the person has a better grasp of the English language--I am all for other languages but the man just sat in his car and threw the papers for me to sign and the food at me...it felt like he was barking at me. Got the broccoli and shrimp as take out. It was decent, but there was way too much sauce in the dish and some of the shrimp was overcooked to a point where it was mushy. There didn't seem to be any complaints from the rest of my office, though there was a little bit of a snafu with the order (it was a big order though). We decided to give Wok and Roll an try since we were in the neighborhood. Pros: The decor is attractive enough inside. The menu is extensive and you should be able to find something for everyone there. The lunch plates sounded interesting, but we arrived too late in the day to be able to order from them. The fried rice my children ordered to accompany their sushi rolls was very good. Prices are reasonable. Cons: The water glasses were dirty. There was a hair in my husband's entree. The California roll wasn't good enough for my son to finish it. My Kung Pao chicken tasted like it used an off the shelf sauce. read more

I eat here all of the time! I always order the sushi, and for the price, it's great! I also like the hot food - especially the Singapore Noodles. I do not agree with the comment about this place being sketchy. Sure, there are some sketchy places in DC, but Wok and Roll is right in downtown Chinatown. It was our first time in Chinatown so we really wanted to try some good chinese/japanese food. From the outside it wasn't so appealing but the gentleman outside was so nice and persuasive that we had to give in. It looks really nice and clean inside and the food was great! The sushi was really great and yummy. What I really have concerns with is the customer service of the staff. Working several jobs in customer service (a past waitress too) I know that at times it can be difficult to uphold perfect service but the importance of a simple smile and friendliness. The waitress who helped us was rude and impatient when taking our order. She didn't smile once and seemed like she absolutely hated her job, the same with several other wait staff. Some of my friends told me to not go there, but I still went there anyways (Feb 28, 2016) because I usually went there when I visit Chinatown. After that time, I will never go there again. It is the worst restaurant ever! The waitress was unfriendly, rude, no service-mind. My friend asked a question about her dish but the waitress answered very rudely like she didn't want to talk to her. So I gave less than 15% tip but the waitresses asked me to give them more (as they always did). The receipt had like "recommended tip" written down for us as if I have to pay it. They didn't deserve what was written on the recommended tip so I gave them less than 15% tip. The owner of the restaurant should not let servers ask for tip because the get the tip they deserve. We argued a little bit cause I didn't think they deserved 15% Food tasted terrible and oily. The soup was tasteless. I wouldn't recommend it. Not worth for what you pay for. read more

I came for the karaoke on my friend's birthday. I wish I went to other karaoke places no matter if they were far. Because the service is something that you don't ever want. The lady who was working in the front was very rude. She yelled at us, and giving glares all over. My friend had a bag of cake and birthday gifts, and she demanded us to give away the bag which I would've given the cake since they don't allow food from outside. But I did not want to give away the bag of gifts.. it was dirty and just not secure. The karaoke machine is hard to navigate, it took us several minutes to understand its function which we never figured out. And she and other guy was looking through the glass on the door back to back ..creepy. Finally our time has come, we were about to leave. And the check comes, she charged gratuity as if she knew she was rude to us and we wouldn't give her that much of tip. Tip is for appreciation but she made our experience worse. read more

We had a pretty unfortunate experience at the karaoke bar last night. We didn't have a reservation, so we grabbed the only available room (a large one) for 1 hour. We ordered the giant pitcher of beer and two long islands for the four of us. We had to go ask what happened to our drinks twice, and it took over 30 minutes (half of our singing time!) to get the things we ordered. We were still having fun though, until the in the middle of our last song the staff busted in the room like we were being raided, turned on the lights and said "No more, you're done!" As they wiped down the tables. We were over half-way done with our last song, microphones in hand singing our hearts out! Like just let us finish the last 45 seconds and then we'll gladly vacate your unfriendly establishment. read more
