I think I read somewhere that this was a West African This is an amazing Liberian restaurant. (not that I have a big frame of reference but everything I got was really good. Not even sure how I found it but I think it's run by a couple of sisters. Super nice service, very spacious, plenty of indoor seating, easy parking. I like that it feels open and homey. I got the Liberian Gravy w/ shrimp and the Torborgee with rice. The Liberian gravy really reminded me of a chinese egg and tomato dish. The gravy isn't like your typical brown gravy. It's more of a tomato based sauce flavored with some spices. It's pretty hard for me to describe... but it is more on the tart side as far as savory dishes go. Torborgee was more my speed. The beans were cooked to a nice soft consistency and felt nice and hearty since it was so cold outside. I loved the flavors it was cooked with beef in it which gave it an amazing heartiness. very earthy flavors. 10/10 would get again. Wish I got to try the fufu but. alas. maybe on a different trip. Got some kanyan to go. kinda like rolled balls of crunchy bits and peanut butter? or something? tasted kinda nutty, felt like it had crunchy bits of dry noodles or something w some nice spices and sugar. Was definitely an interesting snack, would get it again. oh they also make this chili paste? in house which is SOOOOOOOOOO good. reminded me of this african chili oil i had a few years back. man. would come back for that alone. read more

Food was amazing, it was great to find Fufu. We had Liberian gravy with rice and Palava sauce with the fufu. The smoked turkey and oxtail in the dishes were fantastic. Service was outstanding! We had a delicious dessert as well, similar to banana bread, called Rice bread. I would recommend to anyone in search of authentic African/Mediterranean food. read more

I've had my eye on Wologisi for a while. It used to be Al Watan's restaurant but they've moved next door as a bakery. Turns out I've tried Wologisi before. The guy at the counter told me that they catered at World Fest. They had torborgee when I was there which tasted amazing! My friend and I came for lunch on a Monday. Not super busy bur there were a handful of customers dining in and folks coming in to pick up to go orders. The guy at the counter suggested I tried the fried fish with dry rice. My friend got the potatoes green. Huge portions! It's shareable with at least 2 people. The rice was a ton too! My dish came with a whole fish. Maybe it was tilapia? And fried plantains and a spicy vegetable-looking mixture. I asked for it to be spicy and it was fabulous! My friend also got a ton of rice with a spinach stew. We both enjoyed the food! It reminds me of my dad's cooking. He's from West Africa so some of the dishes look and taste similar. Great prices for what you're getting too. And it's vegetarian friendly which is a plus. Staff was fantastic! Friendly and came to check on us. The owner came to our table and gave us homemade peanut brittle as well. Lots of booths inside. Not sure how busy they get but they have a decent number of tables to sit at. Parking is easy but not a ton of spots. It could fill up fast but there were always people leaving and coming. Trying new cuisines is kind of my favorite, so when a friend suggested we try Wologisi as our next location for our traveling book club, I enthusiastically agreed. I arrived first, which provided me the opportunity to chat with the owner (who is absolutely lovely) about the menu. There are SO many entrees, all uniquely seasoned and crafted with care. Unfortunately, they are also all meat-based, which was a problem for me, a plant based eater. When I inquired about her vegetarian offerings, she lit up and began to describe the various dishes that either are, or can be made vegetarian. When she asked whether I liked a certain type of food and discovered that the answer was repeatedly a resounding "yes," she winked and said, "I will make you a special vegetarian sampler." Having no idea what I've ordered typically would fill me with trepidation, however this lady seemed quite trustworthy, so I put my nutrition and hunger in her hands. When my food arrived I knew I had made the correct decision. Spinach rice, pepper, tomato, and onion stew, sweet fried plantains, corn bread, smoked flat bread, yuca root - all gorgeous to behold and incredible to devour. My carnivorous companions ordered a variety of meat-based entrees and were similarly delighted. The portion sizes are quite generous - I was full when I left, and had enough for two lunches later that week. Although the food stands on its own, the staff really make this a special place. 4/11/22 I came here for lunch as I love Mediterranean and African cuisine. It's not hard to locate, and they have a spacious parking area. The restaurant around 1 pm was empty which is always a fear, but the food was good. I was greeted by their staff, but my order I called for wasn't ready, although they were able to bring it together quickly. I decided to eat in rather than taking it to go, and enjoyed it. Reason for my rating: rice was a bit more chewy for my liking, and as a daily rice eater, somewhat disappointing. The vegetable options are slim, and no oxtails on the menu. Overall, everything else was great. The potato greens was somewhat spicy but it made my dish taste just right. I'd definitely return here again if oxtails get added to the menu. read more

Ask for the spicy sauce. I dare you. You'll wonder why they are serving it by the eye dropper. You will not wonder for long. Super friendly people here. Lots of curries and other things that I'm not terribly familiar with. I've never met a cuisine that I did not like. I got the chicken curry. Light coconut curry with lots of spices. I rarely order white meat chicken. It tends to be over cooked and dry especially in a steam table stew type environment. Not here. Really well done. Not stringy, just cooked and held perfectly. The lovely women in the very colorful dress was genuinely pleased that I liked her spicy sauce. She insisted I take another dose to go. You don't have to offer twice sister. This place used to be Al wataan my favorite mid eastern place. Now it's my favorite Liberian place. read more

We had had this food at the world fair and the restaurant is just as wonderful. True traditional flavors and great service. The owner takes time to explain the meals, the heritage behind the food and have general good conversation with patrons. The restaurant doesn't tout flash and flare in their decor, but they don't need it because the flash and flare speaks heavily through their food. read more

Before the sign went up, I walked into what use to be Altawan, and found myself pleasantly surprised! Ownership had changed and it was no and African restaurant!!! While we live near a hub of delicious African eats, I've always wished a location pop up. The food is delicious and the service exceptional!!! The owners were so nice and helpful while suggesting dishes for us to try. We had fried chicken wings, potato greens with meats, cassava greens with meats, fried plantains and Jollof rice. If you dare, ask for some Liberian Pepper sauce to heat up you plate. Can't wait to go back for the fried fish and more cassava greens. Finished our meal with rice bread. As we travel about from place to place we always like to try different foods and this was certainly different. I will say the location is a bit.... divey but the food is quite good. The palm butter was delicious. I had the cassava leaf soup - didn't care for that as much(tasted like grass to me). Had the fufu with it. Gotta at least try it. It's made with the root of the cassava (I think) and is sorta like dough. You pinch it off and add it into the soup - at least that's what I did. Over all I'd recommend it - get the palm butter! read more

I went with my mother in law to try this place out. The food did not disappoint! We loved everything we got though my MIL did not like the FuFu. The young ladies that were there were very nice and kind to us. The place is plain still but it looks as though they are decorating more. Do go try this restaurant. I ordered gyros sandwich with fries. They hardly put any gyros in the sandwich. It tasted like veggies with yogurt sauce rolled up in a pita. Also, they didn't salt the fries! They took 30 minutes to make 3 orders of gyros sandwich and fries. Not coming back to this joint again. read more

They serve an excellent gyros....better than most in Louisville. The lamb/beef was served hot and seared. Another refreshing thing about this gyros is that it is not an oversized portion. The fries we're also hot and crispy. The service is prompt and friendly and the place is clean. (the picture doesn't do this gyros justice. I've never had a more difficult time deciding which was worse between the food and the service writing a review, and I'm still not confident of which is it/was. We'll start with the food, spinach rice, which had no traces of physical spinach nor the flavor of spinach, rather a pile of rice tinted green. Jofri rice, pile of rice tinted slightly red with what looked to be a bag of birds eye frozen vegetables strewn about, lacking any flavor. Now this is where it hurts my soul considering I'd eaten and adored Alwatan literally triple digit times over the last 15 years, falafel. Over fried burned to shit with no recogizable Mediterranean spices. Finally the one that was most upsetting, mutabil or baba ganoush. This was spoiled, it was sour and sharp and not rich creamy smoked and garlicky. I waited at the counter 2 seperate times for about 5 minutes each, but no one ever came to the counter to address the spoiled food. We also had nothing to drink, which was never addressed as no one checked on us or even appeared from the back in the 20 minutes we stayed disgusted over the quality of the food trying to get it down. It took roughly 35 minutes to get this hot mess delivered to our table, the majority of it we threw away because it was inedible. We actually went elsewhere for dinner immediately after because this was so so bad. This is honestly the worst dining experience I've ever had considering the quality of food and service as a whole. I'll never walk back in that door nor should you, it's beyond bad and lies somwhere between horrendous and abominable. read more
