I used to really love this restaurant and have ordered from here many times, but unfortunately the quality seems to have changed recently. The Chicken Masala used to be packed with chicken, but the last few times there was barely any chicken at all. I was essentially eating watered down sauce with very little substance. I'm not sure if this is specific to takeout orders, but after several disappointing experiences, we've unfortunately stopped ordering from here. I was sadly very disappointed by Shalimar. I ordered takeout and was rudely directed to a table of bags "Can't you just look behind you?" which really took me by surprise. Off-putting, but not the end of the world. Once I finally got my food it had the nerve to be BLAND! I was shocked. I ordered the vegetable biryani medium and both my partner and I had to double check I didn't order Mild. I genuinely could not believe the spice level was accurate as my "Medium" tasted so plain. My peshwari naan, which I'm used to being folded tightly with a generous amount of cashews, raisins and coconut, had mostly cashews and I'm not even kidding, only 3 golden raisins. It was slightly burnt, barely sweet, and short of my expectations. Lastly, I would be remiss if I did not mention how LITTLE mango chutney we received. After paying $3 for 2 ounces, the little container wasn't even half filled. I understand it's a small side but that level of stinginess could not go overlooked. I've heard so many good things about this place, but was ultimately disappointed in every area as a takeout order. Admittedly I probably should have ordered spicy, given how I prefer things on the hotter side, but that doesn't change that medium spice should still have vibrant, delicious flavor and my food unfortunately had none of that. Solid Indian spot! The Biryani was the highlight--we asked for it spicy, and it delivered a perfect 'kick' that hit the spot in this cold weather. My kid loved the Tandoori Chicken, though I personally found it a bit mild; I'll definitely request a spicier version next time. The Chicken Kadahi was tasty, though it was sweeter than expected, leaning closer to a Butter Chicken profile. Dang! This was a miss for us. Food was Meh and the service was present. Not good, not terrible but it was there. I ordered the Non-vegetarian Thali and also the keema naan. I really liked the idea of the Thali and getting to try several of their dishes. The lamb saag and kheer were pretty tasty. The keema naan and dal were good. The chicken titkka masala was not good and tasted like chicken in tomato soup with sour cream mixed in. Would not recommend ordering that on its own. The tandoori chicken was super bland and very meh. Nothing there to enjoy. The rice was dry and a TINY amount to the point the waitress came over and said "Would you like more rice?", which IMPLIED IT WOULD BE FREE in my silly mind. I mean you have 3 liquid dishes and one tiny container of rice? Weird. Found out when I got the bill that the next SMALL dish of rice was EXTRA at $2.99. For rice. The raita and naan were fine and what you would expect. You will not get the little crispy cracker and chutney taster that you get at every other Indian restaurant so don't expect that. Definitely wont head back there again. Too may other places to try and the Taj Palace will continue to be our go to for Indian food and they are kind people that seem to care and they have good food. I have to update my review after revisiting this place 12-13 years later. I've traveled the country and tried a LOT of different Indian places (some world class) and I thought my food was just okay. I ordered lentil soup and swordfish masala (hot spice level). The lentil soup was very bland. It could have used some garlic and cilantro to help it out. I added pepper to give it some flavor. The swordfish was well cooked and tasty! The portion was very generous, I couldn't even finish the fish masala. The spice level was very bland and would have passed for mild when I ordered hot. If you like "Americanized Indian" food, you'll love this place. If you want authentic Indian food, this just isn't it. The food is good but I had such an awful experience at this place that it doesn't matter if the food is good. My husband and I live in the neighborhood and dine at this place often. The last time we were there, a bowl of soup was brought to our table with the spoon already in it. The soup was so hot that when my husband put the spoon to his mouth it literally burned him. Seriously. Within a few minutes he had a blister on his lower lip from being burned by the hot spoon. I told several members of the staff about this and pointed out his injury whenever one of them came by the table. NONE of them cared. I was literally blown away by how utterly disinterested they were in the fact that members of their staff had caused injury to a customer. I would give 0 stars if I could. Was sick on my birthday this year, and have never tried Indian food outside of my pre-packaged goods or kitchen, and golly it was an amazing experience. I got the paneer kadai, if you like vegetarian options and tomato-based foods, this is it. It came with 2-3 days worth of food (kadai, rice, naan). I also got the vegetarian appetizer platter, which both me and my boyfriend demolished instantly (who knew veggies and cheese could taste so darn good). Got there at 9:10, the tandoori chicken was the only thing that was good , dal makhani seemed stale as if was from this morning and when I called the staff about it they insisted it was good . Even though per law you cannot kick paying customers out for upto 4hrs , we respected your 9:30pm closing and left at 9:45pm. On the bill they charged me $31 service charge without even notifying us. The 1 star I am giving is for quick service but would given the food quality it's certainly is horrible experience for us never to return. Maybe food quality was bad because we arrived very close to them closing but if you are paying $250. You expect decent food quality. Never returning here! read more

I had the fried potato patty (the name of which escapes me), along with the Lamb Saag, pictured here. The mango chutney that accompanies the appetizer was amazing. Mrs and I are celebrating our 41st wedding anniversary here. Our server is Romy who is friendly enough, but so soft spoken I found it hard to hear him. The restaurant is much brighter than it used to be. I liked it better less bright. Mrs didn't care either way and mentioned the new lights on the wall were cool. The service moved along well. We ordered appetizers, Vegetable Samosas (2) and Onion Bhajhi (5). Both were average. I can make better onion fritters at home. Mrs ordered Chicken Curry and I ordered Chicken Vindaloo. They both come with a little rice. Mrs and I agreed our entrees seemed watered down. We never had a watery dish at any Indian restaurant. Romy came by to inquire how everything was so I told him about the sauce consistency being like water. I told him maybe a little corn starch was needed. The flavor was correct, but sauce not thick enough for sopping the Naan. We also ordered 2 Garlic Naan. Mrs didn't like that they had black burn spots. I am okay with black burns on my food. Overall, it was good, but I should have chose one of the other Indian restaurants today. It may be a while before we visit Shalimar again. I enjoy Shalimar in personn not togo! The food and the buffet are delicious in person. I've had our order made incorrect atleast 10 times when ordering togo. So, if you have dietary needs - make sure you go in person to order so they can clarify your needs. Ordering in person will also ensure a consistent meal. Wheras, the spices and flavor are inconsistent wheb ordering togo.
