When we walked in we should have turned and walked out. The employees were wonderful, friendly and super attentive so that was great. But, our shoes stuck to the floor as we were escorted to our table. Everyone's did. The sound of shoes peeling off of the floor was the backdrop to a disappointing lunch. The window at our table was noticeably dirty. We ordered egg drop soup, egg rolls, crab cheese wontons. The soup was pretty good, egg rolls ok and wontons were a hard no thanks. Our dinner was teriyaki chicken and it was horrible. If you have ever bought orange chicken at Costco then you know Exactly what their teriyaki chicken tasted like. I can't say anything bad about the people or the service, but the last couple times I have been in there it stunk like a sewer. After spending most of the day exploring around Scotts Bluff National Monument...I was just craving some homely, comforting Chinese Food. I simply plugged restaurants into Google Maps and here it is...Wonderful House located right nearby my location. Around 4pm during this Pandemic summer of 2020, the parking lot was virtually empty looking. I was a little nervous about whether they were even open or offered dine-in, but according to Google they did. Well, I went inside and there were people, lol! I mentioned 1 person dining in to the staff and they sat me at a booth. That was easy. And yes...they spaced out the tables so every patron was more than 6 feet away from each other. I liked the entire setting of Wonderful House. It was big enough to accommodate families and plenty of diners. Once I took a seat, I had an optimistic feeling I would like my experience. A gentleman handed me a menu and asked if I wanted anything to drink. I went with my go-to choice...always hot tea. Wonderful House has everything you could ask for out of a Chinese restaurant. Anything on the menu...they featured it. What really caught my attention and which I navigated towards immediately was obviously the Combination Specials. They were ultra cheap!!! And these combos offered a ton of food too! Wow, okay so the 3 different combination plates they featured were labeled - A, B and C. And each one cost $8.95! Wow...$8.95 for a combo platter and especially during early dinner hours? Woohoo! You can't get that around here where I'm from in South Florida! So yes...this was like the best deal along my entire cross country road trip, hehehe. Let me explain what these options - A, B and C detailed... A - Soup of the day, Appetizer: both Egg Roll and Crab Rangoon, Entree - Sweet and Sour Combo including shrimp, chicken and pork or BBQ Pork fried Rice - $8.95. B - Soup of the Day, Appetizer: both Egg Roll and Foil Wrapped Chicken, Entree - Broccoli Beef or BBQ Pork Fried Rice - $8.95. C - Soup of the Day, Appetizer: both Egg Roll and Foil Wrapped Chicken, Entree - Almond Fried Chicken or BBQ Pork Fried Rice - $8.95 I easily knew what I wanted. I went with Option B! I started with a nice cup of hot Egg Drop Soup and added some crispy noodles which they complimentary served. My main dish came out shortly afterwards. And...this was like the most food I had witnessed on a plate in a long time! There was plenty of beef and broccoli, an egg roll, foil wrapped chicken (which prior to here I had never even heard of, lol) and brown rice. I was good to go. I was happy and satisfied, just what I was yearning for after a long day enjoying the sights at Scotts Bluff. I can't say enough good things about the beef and broccoli combo. All the food appeared fresh right out of the wok. My server handed me the check when I was finished. They charged $1.00 or so for the hot tea and with the $8.95 and tax...the meal came to around $11. I gladly handed the waiter $15 and said keep the change. Overall, I couldn't believe how fortunate I was to have uncovered this Wonderful House. Yeah...I would never have expected to find quality Chinese Food at rock bottom prices in Western Nebraska!! Yet I gladly give this restaurant 5 stars and recommend it. read more

We recently moved to this area. I'm from Boston... where I grew up we were raised on Chinese food for special occasions, and basically whenever we wanted a nice meal. My husband was born and raised out west, he moved out to the Boston area due to his career and met me there. He never got the Chinese food thing. He actually found it repulsive. So it was Christmas Eve a HUGE Chinese food night in my former place of residence... I felt pretty homesick and felt I had to settle for this Chinese food. I was taken aback by the restaurant. Where I lived the Chinese restaurants are fabulously decorated, and there's always a huge lounge with many merry makers on the holidays. So I walked in and was very sad. No bar, no big parties.. Well I was there and ordered some take out anyway... guess what? It was DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my word, I never expected that! We ordered a po po tray? (where I come from it's a pu pu platter) pork fried rice, pot stickers ( Peking ravioli where I come from) and Singapore noodles. I was very shocked and happily surprised that this food was so yummy. We all enjoyed every bite! It was different from what we are used to, but I will say the food was very fresh, the rice perfectly cooked, the noodles were amazing, the pot stickers were so good! Very bad experience here , my wife ordered combination plates for her and my 3 year old son. After the fist bit of the noodles she noticed she bit down on something hard, turns out it was a long piece of metal. Furious, after I was shown this I told them I wanted my money back , they responded with we will make a new plate. I love wonderful house so much, the food is so good. The food came out pretty quick too and was at a very good temperature. All the staff was very nice and funny. When you go up to pay they always make small chat with you and make you laugh. If I'm not feeling well I always go there to get some egg drop soup or the hot and sour soup which always makes me feel better. It's a very homely environment as well. You can always hear people laughing, and the hostess's at the front are always nice. I love this place. I totally recommend it!! read more

I struggle rating places that are in the middle of nowhere. Chinese in the middle of Scottsbluff, NE is kind of scary. Do I rate it based on where it's located or how it compares to all other Chinese places? We ordered lunch take out from here yesterday for the entire team. I ordered something simple, Cashew Chicken lunch special. It was okay, it came with fried rice, one egg roll, and a crab cheese wonton. The egg roll and wonton weren't especially memorable but were decent for NE I guess. Overall I wasn't blown away and I didn't get sick. This place is arguably the best Chinese food in the county...perhaps even in the entire panhandle of Nebraska. That being said, you should take these comments from the perspective of someone who has lived elsewhere and travelled often. The food and service both pale in comparison to what one can expect to find in bigger cities like Denver, Austin, or Omaha, and it can't hold a candle to the Chinese food and service one can get in coastal cities like L.A., Miami, or Honolulu. Still, it's a good value overall. The food is reasonably priced, with all of the daily lunch plates priced below $10. There are regular dinner specials and family combinations, as well. The portions are large enough that even a big eater like me always needs a to-go box. The food is flavorful, and the atmosphere is inviting. The General's Chicken could be improved (really needs some work here), but we enjoy the Orange Chicken and the Beef and Broccoli plates. On the service side, the staff would benefit from some training with a customer service specialist from a corporate franchise (such as P.F. Changs, Applebee's, or Chili's), but the servers do a reasonably decent job. It is important here to note that the service mentality at Wonderful House is a reflection of the community. They tend to be a little curt and inflexible, and they struggle with meeting the varying requests of city folk who are use to having every demand met. A big fish in a little pond doesn't have to worry about competition. For instance, this afternoon I asked for an extra egg roll with my meal. The server asked me if I wanted a side of two or a side of four egg rolls. I said I only wanted one extra egg roll. The server told me I can only order two or four egg rolls, but I couldn't get just one extra egg roll. In any city with lots of competitors, the server would be used to the request and would know exactly how to ring up just one egg roll, and the owners/managers would encourage the staff to do whatever it takes to ms the customers happy. After all, the customer may not "always" be right, but no one wants the customer to go next door to the competitor's restaurant. It's a different story, however, when the customer has to drive an hour or more to get a better option. read more
