Amazing dive bar! Bartender is the sweetest lady ever and drinks are fairly priced. Plus, you can order Chinese food (delicious) from the attached restaurant next door! We got some fried wontons and the popo platter. Very dark and not the best place to watch sports (they can't turn the TV volume up when the jukebox is running, and even after it's quite low), but great music selection and apparently the karaoke nights are fun! Not a lot of young folks come around, but the older folks are really funny and friendly. Pop in if you just wanna chill and hang out with some friends, or meet new people! Bathrooms are a bit of a concern for me, though. They're clean, but the doors are quite low (someone could watch me do my business lol). Not sure if this is a normal thing for dive bars (I don't go to many), but it did make me uncomfortable. read more

This is the pure definition of an old-school classic dive bar. It's literally one of the darkest places I've ever walked into but not in a creepy way, but because they basically have the lights turned off. It's almost pitch black in there, and I absolutely love it. There are several tables, a bar where you can pull up a stool, TVs playing sports, and you can even play SuperLotto. It's clearly a neighborhood spot, with plenty of older regulars and that classic dive-bar atmosphere where everyone seems to know each other. I had about an hour and a half to kill and ended up sitting next to an older couple. I can't remember their names, but they could really cut it up and were an absolute pleasure to talk to. When a friend of mine told me that his band is playing at the Dragon Room, I had to go! I remember doing shots at the bar back when I was at SDSU!!! I had to go and reminisce and drag my friend Laura and her boyfriend! Laura and I attended SDSU at the same time, but she had never gone. How did that happen? LOL! The band, Retro X, was already playing when I got there. Laura was able to snag a table in spite of the crowd. Small dance floor...more like a lane...LOL! The interior is not really big, and there were a lot of people of various ages, but definitely older, all who probably have grown up in the 80s. Bartenders were friendly, pours were really good! My only complaint was that it was too bright. Perhaps they didn't want people to fall and break a hip...LOL! It was fun hearing the band's playlist and at one point, singing along...LOL! I'm typically a Friday/Saturday night guy for Wong's but I had recently stepped in on a Saturday morning, something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Why? Well, it's chicken fried steak day! Seriously, so damn good and it's a portion that has your heart begging for half a helpin'. My love for a sketchy dive bars knows no bounds and Wong's officially has my heart. The night we bellied up to the bar we instantly made friends with a few of the regulars. They suggested we order the steak and a plate of egg rolls. No steak for us, but we did get feast on a massive plate of orange chicken and 5-brick sized egg rolls. I would put this Chinese food up against local stand alone Chinese restaurant. Salty, sweet, crunchy, and just banging on every level. The best part about deep throating egg rolls and slurping down vod sods at Wong's is being serenaded by the sweet sounds of Linkin Park and Lady GaGa. The karaoke game here is strong and not to toot my own horn, but I killed it with my rendition of "Don't Speak" by No Doubt. If you live in the area and have yet to visit Wong's... you're failing. This La Mesa landmark is still my favorite neighborhood bar after all these years due to the awesome bartenders and strong drinks. They have taken COVID precaution measures by putting up a partition between the bar and guests, and they also have an outdoor tented area with heaters set up in the parking lot. Sunday brunch is the best. The steaks are made to order on the grill right in the patio and brought to your table with potatoes, eggs and toast. Last time the bar was full but we were still able to sit in the restaurant and order breakfast and drinks from the bar side. Years have passed since our last dinning experience with this restaurant. Upon entering, we were greeted by a waitress who was pleasant but not friendly. The only guests at this establishment were visiting the bar, the restaurant portion was empty. We decided to be seated, and ordered one of the family meals . It came with an appetizer tray- egg rolls, bbq pork, and battered shrimp. All three had been previously deep fried which left them soggy, greasy, and tasteless. A cup of Egg drop soup was also served, the best part of the meal. We chose sesame chicken and a soy sauce beef as our entree. "Fried rice" ( instant short grain white rice coated with soy sauce and a bit of scrambled egg ) was served along side the entrees. We have eaten at many Chinese restaurants, this experience was horrible. The food was far from authentic, a poor representation of a both dishes and appetizers. It lacked seasoning, flavor, texture, eye appeal, and authenticity. The sauces on both entrees were thick and pasty. The meat tough and tasteless. There was no vegetables in either entree, just meat and tasteless sauce. The service was as expected, average. The pricing, very expensive considering the lack of quality. The environment traditional decor, old school, but clean and accommodating. We would not recommend this restaurant to others. There are just too many other good Asian restaurants in San Diego county. read more

Cool local spot right next to a well known local neighborhood Chinese restaurant. We were invited by some friends to come and hang out and listen to some live music. The band was great, they played everything from red hot chilli peppers to Latin/ Caribbean music. One of the singers also dubbed as a bar back and switch wigs several times, he was definitely having a great time. Which elevated my vibes. The bartenders were nice and attentive, I think you have to have a certain personality to work here as other reviews state, there is a mix crowd in this spot. Which I embrace so much and reminds me of my nyc days. All walks of life! Sit next to your grandma or take shots with college kids. We also ordered sushi from next door, all the rolls were half off and they had a Delicious roll that had no rice. What also surprised me, they offered lotto tickets inside this bar! When you're here early on a Saturday/Sunday morning it feels like you are still in a dream state of mind. With the Koi fish in the patio begging for your attention and the Jukebox playing Journey. Started coming here in late 2009 with a "friend" that would drag me out of bed at 8am. Drinks are cheap, they have a couple of pool tables, Scatchers galore, darts, bathrooms were decent. But what we really came for was the breakfast, Homeboy hooks it up in the patio. You get a sheet of paper with the items available and you just circle what you want, pay the bartender inside and take the sheet over to the Cook. People do smoke back there and the cigarette smell can be a bit much. So my favorite hands down is their chicken fried steak! It also comes with eggs, toast and cottage potatoes which are also pretty damn good. The portion size is really big and I find it best to split it with a friend. They also have omelets, biscuits & gravy, and steak n'eggs but I usually stick with the Chicken Fried Steak. Since it is a bar it's not for kids and there can be some rowdy folks even that early in the morning. I used to go to this place (the bar, not the restaurant) when I was in college. Fast forward many years, my friend now lives down the street and Wong's hasn't changed. They're still the neighborhood place to go for cheap drinks. I was here a couple of nights ago on a random visit with friends. A band was doing covers, but they still had their own sounds and people were dancing. The two bartenders were friendly, and there was no cover charge! You could tell who the regulars were, but they weren't really giving off a vibe that outsiders weren't welcome. I'd recommend this place when you're with a big group and looking to get loaded. Came here on a Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised! There was a live band and everyone seemed full of energy. Never expected that this just from driving by. Drinks were decently priced. Overall, pretty good experience and I thought I found my new regular dive. That is, until I got home and the credit card charges posted a few days later. I had charged the $13 bill to my card and left a $5 cash tip. Pretty decent tip right? For two drinks and being there less than an hour. Apparently they didn't think so, since they decided to tack on another $2 tip to my card after I left making my total credit charge $15. Now, $2 isn't a whole lot of money., but that's just shady. So they can keep the $2 in exchange for losing a potential regular. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Everytime my friends and I try to figure out where to go and we just can't decide we end up here. haha Pitchers are only like 7 bucks and nice stiff drinks are as low as 3 bucks! I'm giving this a one star ONLY because I witnessed something that was so disturbing to me that everything else that could have been 5+++ was overshadowed by my ONE hour at this establishment on a Friday night. There was a young woman that was clearly too inebriated to be in the bar... let's call her Megan. She fell on the floor more than once. She didn't stumble, she fell...flat on her back...she knocked a bar table over two times. Meanwhile, the guy she is "with"--we'll call him Chet--could care less, caring only about grinding up on her, along with another unknown man. I asked another young woman, that seemed to know Megan, if she was her friend. No, she worked there, goes by the name of Jen. I suggested that maybe Megan should go? "Yes, yes", Jen said, all the while doing absolutely nothing to make sure Megan was ok, instead focusing on what was clearly more important social interactions. I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE TO SAY SOMETHING TO STAFF. After Megan fell for the last time, Chet, apparently realizing that he, too, would be booted (or maybe it was my shaming of him, who knows), picked Megan up and--again, literally--THREW her over his shoulder, carrying her out of the bar like a rag doll. The fact that staff, despite being told by more than one person that Megan was not ok (and Chet, at best, didn't care, and at worst was going to hurt her), says everything about this place. AND, there was zero security. WHY IS THERE NO SECURITY AT THIS PLACE?? At midnight. On a Friday night?!?!? Megan--I hope you made it home safely. If anything else, know that we saw something and said something. Time's up for this nonsense. read more

Fun enough place. Went on a friday night at 6 pm. Stood at the bar for about 8 minutes. NO SERVICE. Walked back to the door and bought some scratchers. The lady smoking outside says to me " Your bartender will be inside in a minute", as a car is backing up into a parking space. The lady smoking yells something like " Your bank is on the shelf behind the counter" and mumbles something about being late. She leaves and gets in her car. Ok, whatever deal you have with the other bartender for being late SHOULD NOT supersede your job in customer service. Put your cigarette down and come back to serve the customer. It was roughly 6:09 at this point. Of course, the bartender that scurries in late is flustered and stressed so my first beer was in my hand 16 minutes after I stood at the bar. I love Wong's. Probably my favorite dive in San Diego. On any night you can catch live local bands, karaoke, football, or whatever is happening. The owner, Jeff Wong is a great guy. You can tell his staff love him, with many of them working there for a long time. And about that staff! Attentive bar tenders that pour you an honest drink in a timely manner no matter how busy they get, and it can get busy in there what with the regulars, the college crowd, the fans of the performing artists, and the spillover from the attached restaurant, Wong's golden dragon. Though the restaurant is currently closed for reparations following a kitchen fire when they are open they serve great Chinese food. There are pool tables and foosball and darts. A comfortable patio in back with a Koi pond where you can smoke, not to mention a bomb ass steak and eggs breakfast on the weekends that can't be beat. If you haven't experienced Wong's Dragon room, I recommend you get there soon! read more
