Came to try the soup was feeling a bit under the weather. Tried the War Won Ton Soup, it was beyond delicious. There was ham chicken shrimp veggies and of course wontons. Added some spice to turn it up a notch but even without, it was good. Have yet to try the food but if it's anything like the sup I recommend. Wongs has been a staple of Hollister for many many years. The owner is very sweet and nice. The food has always been so good! We decided to order some pickup for a Sunday afternoon. We ordered Hot and Sour Soup, WonTons in Chili Sauce, Spicy Garlic Wings, and House Fried Rice. OMG everything was so delicious and fresh. The Spicy Garlic Chicken Wings are now my absolute favorite!! We were so hungry we forgot to take pics. For the best Chinese food in Hollister do go to Wong's. You will not regret it. I arrived at Wong's very hungry on a Sunday evening after hiking at Pinnacles National Park. The restaurant was attractive, the food was delicious, & the staff was cheerful & attentive! I found multiple vegetarian options and ordered the eggplant with garlic sauce, along with egg rolls, steamed rice and a pot of hot tea. Literally the ONLY Chinese food I enjoy. We haven't been here for the longest time, but it is just as I remember it; a small, hole-in-the-wall, family owned/ran business that always leaves my stomach full and belly HAPPY! I was looking for good chinese food other than panda. We are hispanic decent. Well i researched the place in advance for opening & closing hours. We got there at a time this place should be open. Walk in and theres teo ladies who i assume were waitresses. Immediately scan us with a disgraceful look and one tells us to go back because theyre closed. I checked the sign outside and they should be open. As we were leaving two other ladies who are not workers walk in and are greeted and attended. I keep trying thinking it was just that time. But it's not unfortunately this place was really good before the pandemic. Now it's hard to taste anything but garlic. Okay so my only Spanish speaking Mexican family has been going here since I was like 8, I'm 27 now. The woman who owns/ works there has always been so nice, she would always make jokes with us even through the language barrier. Who I'm assuming was her father this cute charming older man who definitely spoke no English but always sat in one of the tables reading his newspaper and would come over to our table to say hi or bring out our food. There was always one of the kids there at one table studying or helping out with the restaurant, which I loved seeing for some reason as a kid. They all would be so welcoming and I can remember they always had a story for us or commented on how big my siblings and I were getting. NOW TO THE FOOD! I can tell you that everything is 100% delicious, worth the wait when it's all being prepared from scratch! The chicken cream corn soup, fried rice, sweet & sour chicken, and a coke was my go too! The enviroment of this 3rd rate chinese restaurant is stale along with the food. The service is always slow, the food never tastes quite right and they use MSG. I have no idea how they have stayed in business this long but I have 10 to 1 odds that with items like soup and tea they get dumped back into the main pot in the back. Bathrooms are filthy along with the rest of the restaurant and you can always be sure to find something crawling on the floor. I lived in Hollister for many years and have tried many of the other Chinese restaurants, but like the friendly, family atmosphere and the food over any other Chinese restaurant. The food is fresh and cooked to order (this may take some time), however you will not be disappointed. They do not use any flavor enhancers (MSG) in their cooking and it is all cooked by one person, Kin and because of this the flavors are consistent time after time. Kin prepares his daily soup every morning and makes any other soup upon request. I advise you to call ahead or just Enjoy your visit with family and friends. It is clean and the interior has been recently updated with new carpet and paint. They also have new tables and chairs. The bathroom has been remodeled as well. Overall it looks fresh and modern. Another treat is meeting May. She is Kin's wife and a smart-ass. Be prepared to laugh a lot and feel free to give it back to her. She is a crack up and quite the character. I have been to Wong's many times and have gotten to know May and Kin over the years and they are Wonderful. The food is full of flavor and is made to order. I was a little worried when my Dad requested we eat here on his birthday, as I've read reviews for most restaurants in Hollister and noticed the many 1 star reviews. We had a party of 9 and were seated immediately. The decor is kind of cheesy, it sort of looks like its the family living room. The brick walls are rather uninviting also. I'm not here to review the decor, however so lets get on to the food. We had one of their dinner combinations(served family style, even with a lazy-susan!) plus an order of orange peel chicken (8$) soda and tea for 9 and it was only like 75 bucks. The food was definitely not the best i've ever had, and generally tasted underseasoned (I guess thats what the soy sauce is for?) It was sort of odd that they brought us canned soda, but I can see through that. Our combo came with: fried prawns (I thought they were tastey and I loved the batter) cashew chicken(tastey veg, but the sauce was slimey) sweet and sour pork (decent) beef and broccoli(the beef was mushy and flavorless) The orange peel chicken was the last to come out and definitely the highlight of the meal. It tasted more fresh than the other plates and I loved the sauce. Anything else that mightve come with the combo I cant remember, so they couldn't have been that good. All in all I felt this place was a little better than other reviews had stated, but definitely not the best in town. read more

We moved here recently from a rural area that had an incredibly good Thai/Chinese restaurant, mysteriously out of character for Lake County (it was in Clearlake Oaks, if you're ever up that way), so it's hard to know if I'm giving an unbiased review, but I'll try! We have eaten lunch twice at Wong's Garden, and found the food to be pretty middle-of-the-road. It is a small, mom-and-pop restaurant, with what appear to be family members also as wait staff. Our first trip, we must have gotten Mom as our waitperson, and she was a hoot. Every trip to our table, she cracked us up with a bit of wry humor, which I found delightful given what appeared to be her somewhat limited fluency in English. Both visits, we were in a nearly-empty restaurant: three tables of folks out of maybe fifteen tables, so I really don't know how full they get or what service is like if they do get busy, but it was perfectly acceptable service on our visits. The food was reasonable, the prices seemed acceptable, the portions were characteristically large. Food prep seemed a little slow, but I got the sense that Dad may have been the only person in the kitchen. No complaints about quality, freshness, etc.; I imagine the absence of salt and option of brown rice instead of white would make this a good choice for the heart-health-concerned diner. We'll eat there again, I'm sure, based on the nice people and the proximity to our home, but will also be on the prowl for better Chinese food (that's had a little salt added before being served). read more

I was hesitant on visiting this small place in a strip mall because of previous reviews, but I'm glad I did. I have stopped here twice and both times the food has been excellent. We have had Hunan beef, sweet and sour pork, hot and sour soup, house fried rice twice with the same results. Everything was excellent. The egg rolls were mediocre but ok. I have nothing but positive things to say about the food. The only negative was the time. It was not ready when they said it would be. Only 5 or 10 minutes later, but that is nothing if the food is good. But you can tell the food is made to order and to me, fresh and hot is what I want! The sweet and sour pork batter was crisp even after soaking in the sauce! No gumminess at all! This is our current go to place for Chinese food in Hollister and I am pretty darn picky. read more

Ordered the BBQ pork fried rice, chicken won ton soup, and since they didn't have any egg rolls (a Chinese restaurant with no egg rolls, what?!) we opted for the pot stickers. Waited 10 minutes for a lady to appear and tell us rudely to seat ourselves. Immediately expected us to order and rolled her eyes when we asked for a couple minutes to look at menu. Noticed one of the plates put down for each person had food particles stuck to it. Pointed it out and she threw the plate on an empty table and brought another one. Same issue with replacement plate plus 2 others of 5 plates for 5 people also had dried food particles stuck to them. So disappointing - I stopped in for an order on a Monday night. After I ordered in person I paid and then was told I would have to wait 30 minutes. Yikes! so long? Yes, but it turned out that I had to wait an hour! As I waited and waited there was no explanation offered until I pushed to know from the server why my order had taken so long. I was told because there had been so many phone in orders. Great - I told her she should have let me know so I could chose what to do about the wait time. I took the food home thinking that while I had to wait so long at least it would be good. Nope - it was bland and colorless. The eggplant was mushy without any good flavor. The cashew chicken was bland and colorless. The chow mien and the mu shu pork was passable. I am not usually so conservative about ordering but I figured these were standard dishes that would should be safe bets. I was wrong. I hope they step up their game. There is only China Panda as an alternative but that's what I will choose next time. read more

Apparently, one is not allowed to give no stars. Don't even think about patronizing this "restaurant." Only time we went, one of us was facing the entrance to the kitchen. A cook dropped a wokful of food onto the floor, scooped it up and PLATED IT! Needless to say, we haven't been back.
