We met the most generous Korean restaurant owner here. We're staying at a nearby hotel while visiting Alaska, and wanted a light & healthy dinner. It was around 8 pm when we started searching online, and found this restaurant which closes at 10 pm. As soon as we got there the lady brought us Korean style tea to warm up. We checked the menus she gave us and ordered a soy bean soup and a seafood stir fry. Next time the lady came she brought 15 different bowls of banchan (side dishes including kimchi). We have been to many Korean restaurants all over the US but no where else has brought that many dishes if banchan. Our entrees came, same sizes as elsewhere, and just as tasty. Korean food is my favorite food. Its diverse, favorable, and generally good for you. Eating at WonJo is like going to your grandma's. You will be well cared for, and you'll leave stuffed. We went in Wonjo around noon today -- hungry, cold and tired. We didn't order anything elaborate -- just a couple of lunch specials. And.... To begin with, the lady brought to us 17 banchan dishes just to go with our lunch specials -- something unheard of where we come from! And the lady kept asking us if we would want more refills on them. We were full, warmed up and recharged. Deducting a 2 stars for 2 reasons: 1) Prices are now dramatically higher. For example, a 21 oz Korean beer is $20. 2) The food takes a very long time to come out and...when it finally does, all the ban chan comes out with it? Thank God for Wonjo Korean Cuisine! I'm Korean and was traveling with my Korean friends in Alaska when we were starting to crave a meal from our homeland. We honestly didn't expect to find an authentic Korean restaurant in Anchorage, much less one that exceeds many in the SoCal area, but we did!!!! The dishes were delicious - reminding us of Grandma's cooking! The service was great, the owner spoke in full Korean AND parts of the menu were only in Korean so we knew it was legit! Lol. And the BANCHAN!!! Omg!!! Take a look at my pics! They were endless! So many different delicious types and many of the roots and vegetables were hand picked from the area! Last dinner for our family before heading back home. Being from LA, and of Korean descent, we have a high bar for Korean food. Nice homie restaurant with great attentive service. Banchan setting is as good as KTown-LA. Mackerel was very very good and flaky (not dry at all). Kimchee jjigae was what I was craving. Did not enjoy as much because the broth was filled with butter (not the taste I go for). Kimchee was nice and fermented but soup base a bit off because of butter. Pork bulgogee was good and tasty. We ordered kim chee pajun but not what we normally have at home. Too thick (like Chicago pizzas) and not the thin crispy version we get at home. All in all, great comforting food. Wasn't sure where to eat tonight, but Wonju Korean Cuisine popped up, as having had some 5 star ratings, so i took a look at the menu, and thought "Ok, there are options i can try" The dining room is cosy, and feels warm and quite intimate, with a good family feel. Lots of plants, and the walls are covered with pictures of menu items, in case you're unfamiliar with Korean food. I ordered Chicken Bulgogi, because i know i love bulgogi, and husband ordered Hot Stone Bibimbap. The menu said that each of our dishes came with side dishes, mine said 4, and his said 5. Which was one of the things i was very curious about. I've watched MANY K dramas, modern, historical, romantic, i love them, and am always intrigued by those little dishes that accompany the foods. So our server, before we were even seated, took our drink order. Anyway, it wasn't a long wait before she came out with a rolling trolley. The whole bottom of the tray was FILLED with Banchan (those intriguing little side dishes) We were also served soup, which had a similar flavour profile to miso soup, and was light, and warming. I counted the banchan (17) because it was a lot, but i was highly excited to try some. I like kimchi, and there was some kimchi, but most everything else, i had no clue about. One was cilantro, which seemed to have been lightly blanched. There was a delicious pickled spinach one, i could have eaten loads of those, some fried tofu, various noodle dishes, and maybe I think some other seaweeds? Eggplant, cucumber, and one that was yellow and tasted fruity. No clue what that was but we both enjoyed sampling those, and i am grateful for the large portion we were served. The chicken bulgogi was packed full of flavour, and made with thighs, so the chicken was juicy, and carried the flavour well. Lovely sticky rice. Husband enjoyed his bibimbap, and as it's a bit on the chilly side today, he kept grabbing the bowl and holding on, to get warm. He particularly enjoyed the crunchy bits of sizzled rice. As for the staff - absolutely wonderful! As we were leaving, the table behind us had some staff members sitting there, and one young lady became quite enthralled by my coat. So i did a fashion show for her and displayed all the features, and finished up with a runway walk. She took a picture of the (Orolay) label, and noted my tip that on Black Friday, Amazon halve the price of these jackets. Even so, they are a good priced coat, and well suited to our temperatures. Tucked away off Fireweed Ave in Anchorage nestled between a liquor store and shady massage place is a great Korean Restaurant. Like any legit Korean Restaurant you are met with a very pragmatic dining room, super clean, eccentric decor and great service. My favorite, kimchi and all the other fermented goodness, is abundant! We have been here a few times. On my last visit, I ordered 4 entrees. The menu had a disclaimer that said "prices subject to change." I assumed this pertained to seafood or items that were subject to fluctuating market prices. I estimated my bill would be about $85 based on the menu. Upon receiving my $125 bill, I checked the menu and redid the math. Each entree ordered had $5-10 dollars added to it on my check. There was also a 18% gratuity added because we were a party of 5. Since my first review, restaurant has changed its name and sign from Wonjo Tofu House to Wonjo Korean Cuisine, presumably to differentiate itself from Tofu House on Arctic. My mom and I ordered takeout from here because we assumed they were closed for dine-in due to the most recent COVID-19 shutdown. When I went to pick up the food, I found out they are open for dine-in by reservation only. Everything appeared clean and well-spaced. Unfortunately, our two favorite entrees were inexplicably removed from the menu. When my mom tried to order kimchi jaeyuk tofu (pictured below) for me, she was informed that was taken off the menu over a year ago. Similarly my mom's favorite soybean stew is no longer on the menu. The menu currently posted on their website still has these items, so clearly it has not been updated recently. The restaurant has virtually no online presence so I had no way of checking social media for an updated menu, and the most recent photos on Yelp and elsewhere are at least a year or two old. That aside, the food was delicious as ever. I got the spicy pork bulgogi lunch special. Despite being a lunch special, the portion sizes are huge and I got two meals for the price of one. The banchan are wrapped in foil in the box which is a nice way to keep them separated. This time one of the sides included was hot dog slices which struck me as a little odd. I've never been to any Korean restaurant that had hot dogs as a side dish. They weren't bad, but I definitely preferred all the other vegetable sides. I'd give this place 4.5 stars now but I'm keeping it at 5 here because I have fond memories of coming here for lunch when I lived in Anchorage and the server is a sweetheart. If you're looking for quality Korean food for takeout or dine-in, Wonjo is a great option. read more

There's something about the best Asian restaurant in Anchorage being in discreet locations something about it makes them that much better. Won Jo is a clean comfy restaurant nestled between a liquor store and massage parlor (one of the kinds you kind of don't want to know about). Don't let that deter you, the food and service is outstanding. Between the few times I've been here, I've gotten the hot pot with silky tofu as well as the lunch special spicy chicken bulgolgi. Both were very tasty and piping hot. Something in the sauces and broth make the flavors stand out. Our hostess and waitress kept our water glasses full. She's very friendly and personable as well. I used to go here often when they specialized in tofu stews but management now seems to have changed since then. Plain and simple this is not good value. The soup tasted alright but it was really overpriced. Most things are $20+ per person, with bbq being $30. After living in Korea I'm sure I won't find anything comparable outside of LA or NYC but none of the ingredients here looked very fresh. The banchan (side dishes) were either really old or just had no flavor. If you wanna try Korean food, it's better to take the time to find a recipe online and cook it yourself or visit a big city. read more

We were in Anchorage traveling through the area heading to Seward for a cruise. We saw the high ratings on Yelp and decided to go to Wonjo for dinner. Front parking spots were all taken but there was plenty of room in the parking lot off to the right of the building. Restaurant had a down home feel and we were immediately greeted by some very friendly faces. What it lacked in polish they more than made up for with genuine warmth. Our food was great- soon dubu tofu stew and bibimbap and free banchan. I lived in Busan, South Korea for years and so I am a snob when it comes to Korean food. It was like I was back in Korea when I ate at Wonjo Korean Cuisine. The server was nice and made sure we had everything we needed like rice, extra bowls and plates, and plenty of water. I think for the price, the portions should be bigger. I've never had this much ban chan (side dishes) before, maybe at most 8 dishes but we were given 17!! The Kimchi pajeon was great but I think it could have been a bit more crispy. I was craving for some soup after almost a week of poor food options in Alaska. So I wanted to have some Korean food. I had the beef tofu soup. I like the banchan that came with it. The fried fish was tasty. But the beef in the soup was not. It was hard to chew, and I gave it up completely. The soup was tasty at first. I didn't ask if it had MSG, but I had some headaches later on after dinner. There was only 1 Korean lady serving all the tables. She looked so busy that I didn't ask for a refill of the banchan, so I don't even know if you can ask for refill or not. Nothing special here in my opinion. I visited wonjo with my family on a week night. The restaurant is of a medium to small size and we sat in a booth that was cramped by a stand up curtain separating the seating area from the food prep and business area. About the time our food was served the staff put some k-pop on the stereo, which was fine. I'm not opposed to music during dinner. The overall ambiance was haphazard, a bit disorganized. There was a large party so I expected service to be slightly slower, but it ended up being very slow even after the group departed. I think there may have been only one server, although I'm not sure as my view was blocked by the previously mentioned screen. The selection of banchan was very good when it eventually came out. We ordered 2 different bibimbap and a stir fried seafood dish. All three were decent, with with good flavor and a good level of heat. The vegetables in the stir fry stood out for their freshness. The seafood was a bit scant. Likewise, in the beef bibimbap there wasn't much meat and some pieces of meat proved overly tough to the point of inedible. Finally, the prices. Restaurant prices have definitely gone up 15-20 percent or more in the past three years. Wonjo is no exception. I'm accustomed to it, but I expect excellent food and service when I'm paying close to $30 per plate. I don't feel like either the food or service was excellent at Wonjo. The food was good, but not great. The service left much to be desired from initial order to getting the check. On my second day in Anchorage, I decided to change my mood to Korean BBQ. I looked up and found several good Korean restaurants, and I decided to point at this place. The waitress was so friendly and funny. I enjoyed the quick service. I ordered combo of (intestine) tofu soup and sliced bulgogi beef. The soup was hot, and the beef was tasty. I can't believe Anchorage would offer such good Asian food options. I am impressed. My friend warned me for the limited options, but I believe I was content with this. Nothing's wrong with full belly with great food in my stomach. Prices are reasonable for Anchorage , of course. I'm not complaining. This is an exceptional Korean resturant. Vegan options. Sweet potato noodles and glass noodles in each dish were so good - bonus - they are gluten free. Kimchi was awesome.
