I recently visited Wood Butcher Bar and left extremely disappointed because of the way a bouncer was treating guests. From the moment I arrived, the attitude came off as rude and dismissive rather than welcoming or professional. Instead of communicating clearly or respectfully and descalating situations as bouncers should do, this specific bouncer was doing the complete opposite causing situations to escalate and make guests feel uncomfortable. Bouncers are there to deescalate situations not make situations. What makes it worse is that this kind of behavior reflects directly on the business. A bar can have good drinks, music, and atmosphere, but the first interaction people have is with the staff at the door. When the bouncers create an uncomfortable or hostile environment, it hurts the bar's reputation and discourages people from returning. I've heard the same complaints from others, which tells me this isn't an isolated issue. Management DO BETTER this is unprofessional not fair to the other bouncers and workers at your bar who are good at their job. read more

I had a very disappointing and concerning experience at Wood Butcher. After closing out my tab, the bartender never returned my card -- and later I discovered it had been used without my permission. This is completely unacceptable. I trusted this establishment with my payment information, and that trust was broken. Met my friend here before Dead & Co show at Wheatland. He's from Chico and me from Vallejo so this was a good meeting place. I arrived at 4:20 (coincidence I think not) and my buddy and bartender were the only 2 people there. The bartender who goes by the name of Milkshake, yes you read right Milkshake, was very cool. She was frying up homemade taquitos that were great snacks. People were showing up while we were there so it had a more festive atmosphere. We were debating on getting another beer before heading to the show but Milkshake recommended we leave to avoid any parking issues at Wheatland. Great call by Milkshake. We got to the venue by 6 and parking was a breeze. Left plenty of time for tailgating and enjoying the festivities. Occupying a spot across the street from Thai Society restaurant and behind the heart of downtown Marysville is the Wood Butcher. Not a very sizeable bar, but possesses the rare blend of a cozy, relatively easy-going place, to a happening spot on the weekends. The bar has a decent selection of both liquor and bottled beers; the downside is what little is available on tap: Coors Light, another domestic (can't think of the name) brew, and Widmer Hefeweizen (I like Widmer, so I can't really complain too much). Drink specials range from decent to downright dirt cheap (Jagerbombs were two and a half bucks one night). Included off to the right is a game room, complete with two pool tables, a dart board, and a shuffle board table. All of it is in very good shape and well maintained; the implements for the games are available at request from the bartender. Much like the bar, the game room is kept relatively clean. Mixed into the weekends are the karaoke nights, which start at 9 PM until Last Call (1 am). The overall song selection is good, and Big Jay (the DJ/Karaoke Faciliator/Bouncer) does a great job at running the overall experience. The staff are friendly, courteous, and quick with the drinks, and will help call a cab should your original plan to get back home falls through. The Wood Butcher draws a crowd which tends to vary from time to time. Sometimes, it's young singles out for a night on the town, or service members looking to unwind and forget about the work week. Other nights, it's an older crowd, be they married or single, or simply long-time friends. Sometimes, it's a combination of the three, none of the above, and/or something new. The Wood Butcher seems to appeal to people of many different walks of life, which makes interesting for people-watching. In addition, if you're looking for another watering hole or simply executing a bar hop, the Wood Butcher is situated within decent walking distance to the other downtown establishments, such as the Silver Dollar Saloon, the Cigar Box, the Cortez Room, etc. There are few (if any) places in downtown Marysville to unwind in that are better than this.
