We were driving back from Mackinac Island, and wanted a place where we could bring our dogs. There are tables outside, but it started raining so we ate in our car. Wood Winds has the look of an old school diner, with tasty pies available by the slice in a glass display. They also have excellent cookies and assorted nicknacks for sale. But the meals are the real attraction here. I ordered a Reuben, which I always do when I want to get a lay of the land. It was perfect, with generous stacks of corned beef, sauerkraut, and Swiss, and buttery crispy marble rye. My wife got the chicken fajita wrap. She normally orders any chicken sandwich plain, but she forgot to ask for no peppers and onions. She loved it, since they sautéed them. Sandwiches and wraps are served with perfectly crispy fries. Not a scrap remained of either meal. The price was reasonable, and the food was ready in less than 10 minutes. We'll definitely plan to visit here again, whether the dogs are with us or not. read more

We stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday morning. While they did offer a breakfast buffet, we opted to order from the menu. The skillet with 'Everything" was tasty and my eggs were perfectly over easy. My spouse enjoyed her breakfast sandwich on a bagel. The staff was attentive. Food was good. As an outsider, it's nice to see what the popular meeting spot in Onway is like. In some ways, it does remind me of a miniature Bob Evans or Cracker barrel, but it includes a soup and salad bar. read more

I've only ever eaten breakfast or pizza here, so I can only comment on those two. Both are excellent, and the the staff is always kind and polite, but sometimes you need to be patient with service and seating - especially on weekends. Unfortunately the portions seem to have gotten leaner while charging more money per plate since covid, the cost of the breakfast buffet is absolutely ridiculous now and does not appear all that appealing anyway. Before we set out on a chilly Sept. morning exploring area trail systems, we decided to order a hot breakfast from Wood Winds Restaurant. The young server who pulled our order together was exceptional. She was fast, listened to our special requests and had a tremendous attitude. 5* effort. Thank you. The eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and omelet were "ok". They were good. Nothing earth shattering here. The pancakes were the best we thought. The eggs were ho-hum. Omelet was average with the thin ham slices not exciting anyone. But, it was hot breakfast on a chilly more. Price was right, too. I'd go to this place if I was near. Decent enough and the crowd inside seemed to be enjoying themselves. Nice service. Ask for a raise! read more

It's not very often that I find a restaurant that I can't stop returning to, but Wood Winds was that place during my stay in northern MI. My boyfriend and I enjoyed 3 different meals here, and every one of them was top notch. The service was speedy and friendly, the food was hot, fresh, and flavorful, and the restaurant itself was very clean with cute woodsy decor. My boyfriend ordered the Philly steak omelette and the meat lovers omelette twice, and enjoyed them all. The omelettes were huge and packed full of toppings. I ordered the southern 1-egg omelette and the Philly steak 1-egg omelette and for being a smaller portion, I felt like it was still a ton of food and adequately packed with all of the fixin's. The hashbrowns on the side were also great, and perfectly crispy the second time around. My third meal was the buffalo ranch chicken wrap--one of the designated Wood Winds Favorites, and I have to agree--it was great! This place has a huge menu, and I am convinced that you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. read more

Was in town for a wedding and was looking for a lunch stop. Dropped in Friday around 12:30 and ended up waiting for about 10 minutes for a table. Restaurant was at about 40% capacity and the hostess was running around like a chicken with its head cut off...yes she was actually running...creating her own stress and chaos. Probably 10 open tables while we stood their unacknowledged (5 total in our party) until a waitress finally acknowledged us and sat us. Ordered. Bowl of soup forgotten. Lunch was ok...nothing special. A local later told me we should gone somewhere else. Wasn't impressed. read more

This is a wonderful little place. We have been here twice now. This last time I had the chicken fajita. My son had a pizza and it was delightful. I think almost anything on the menu is top notch. Not worth wait. Waited 15 mins to be seated 30 for food. Ordered fish special. Fries have no salt on them and no seasoning on fish. And had dirty dishes on table for 15 min. And yes it was the Friday all you can eat cod and as you can tell it looks nothing like the owner picture that they download so they could keep posting reviews to up the stars. They serve frozen hence no seasoning. Plus never got to eat more then one cause had to get to go cause after an hr I was no longer willing to be late after trying what we waited 45 mins for. Plus entrance is to crowded. Is it. Restaurant or a store? People bumping and crowed and defiantly not easy access to get threw for wheel chair bound people. I guess I ordered the wrong thing! Supposedly the soup was homemade but this tomato soup tasted like it was right out of a Campbell can. It was awful! The Woodwinds Restaurant is my favorite place in North East Michigan, no wonder my husband surprised me with a trip there for my birthday. A well kept secret, is that the Woodwinds has the best Cook, hands down. I lucked out, when the dinner special was Lasagna, with garlic bread, soup and salad bar. I received a generous portion of lasagna w/ garlic bread in an extra large bowl. I especially liked the way it was prepared with extra layers of pasta on the bottom, the meat sauce layers near the top and a lot of sauce poured over it. It was absolutely delicious! The salad bar is very good too. For dessert, I had the strawberry shortcake, a very generous portion. My family has been coming here for seven years now and I have tried many things on the menu. I would also recommend the spaghetti with marinara sauce, one of the best I've had. My other favorite is the crispy chicken salad. Treat yourself to good food! Wood Winds Restaurant has a rustic touristy appeal in northern Michigan in the beautiful city of Onaway. At first look it appears to be something of a steak house from the outside but is more of a traditional family-style restaurant serving breakfast through dinner. For visual appeal I would rate the place with five stars. Our visit had two elderly disabled persons so much of my review is geared this way. We had a long wait around noon to get in to be seated. The restaurant offers no real place to sit or wait. You simply get crowded into a small entryway while others try to get past with with take out orders and people who are leaving. There is little in the way of handicap parking making it difficult for some to get into the restaurant. Once seated our party was ordering lunch/dinner. Most of the patrons there were having breakfast of the breakfast bar. Although it was lunch, the salad bar was not even setup until close to 1pm. We were all ordering fish, which does not come with cole slaw, which is unusual for a family-style restaurant. We asked for it and the waitress brought cole slaw to only one of use and no one else. This is poor service on the part of both the waitress and the restaurant. The choices of fish are cod and lake perch. The lake perch was excellent and was served with yesterday's rock hard baked potato, no vegetables and a hard bread roll. Others had the senior cod which is meant to be a smaller serving but was two pieces of about 5 ounces total. Their potato and rolls were the same. Salad bar is available for $4 extra, although there are few options to choose from. No light or low calorie salad dressings, no vinegar/oil. Tomatoes on the salad bar were old and over refrigerated and had a bad or old taste to them. We didn't order desserts. Overall, the appearance of the restaurant is good. Food is fair but prices on some meals are quite high considering the excessive wait time and poor service. Our waitress seemed nice but overly preoccupied with too many kitchen tasks to service the tables effectively. This is likely a management issue but one that should be addressed. Waitstaff should be preoccupied with the service of customers, not dishing food, busing tables or mopping floors. Normally I would recommend visiting a restaurant once, but if you're looking for a good experience I would suggest trying another area restaurant instead. read more

This is one of our go to places in Onaway. Great meals, very friendly wait staff. This is our second home spot so whenever we are up we at least ear one meal here. Breakfast is like at home. We are regulars at this establishment. We go for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I feel that breakfast is their best meal. Which they serve all day. Their omelets are at least four eggs and are stuffed to capacity. The French toast is delicious and they offer a variety of fruit toppings. I recommend the cinnamon apples. On Saturdays and Sundays they offer a breakfast buffet with eggs, hash browns, French toast sticks, bacon, sausage links, and other assorted goodies. Thursdays they offer a pizza and salad buffet for lunch. It is delicious and at a great price. The staff is friendly and treats everyone like family. They are popular on Sunday mornings, because they are one of two places serving breakfast. So, don't be surprised if there is a bit of a wait, especially if a church service just let out. read more

BURGER LIKE WHOA!! The hubs and I were feeling peckish while driving through Onaway, and Wood Wind caught our eye. (Well, to be honest, the shiny black fiberglass bear statue out front caught our eye. So we went in because, c'mon...bear statue.) Everything on the menu sounded great, because we were starving, but in a restaurant I don't know, I usually go for the burger. Not because it's simple to make, but because it's actually a good measure of a restaurant. If you screw up a burger...sorry. You're dead to me. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, well done. And not only was it cooked to perfection, it was JUICY! You know how difficult it is to make a JUICY well-done burger? Nine out of ten burgers I get resemble hockey pucks, if that says anything. And hockey pucks taste like crap, I don't care HOW many veggies and condiments you pile on. But not here. The burger was fat and juicy and eminently munchable, and the bacon was extra-crispy as requested. I selected the onion rings as a side, and they were perfectly fine, but I only managed a couple after finishing a burger the size of a small child's head. Mmmmmm... (NOTE: The service was also stellar. Every server who came near our table was smiley and chatty and friendly, and they brought a young vibe to a place that looks like its decor was chosen by someone's gun-totin' granny. Also, I saw at least two servers singing along to the piped-in Classic tunes. Is there a more difinitive sign of a happy workplace than servers singing?! I don't think so.
