I was referred to Woodcrafters, and so happy to find this gem of a store in Salem. I needed to purchase some wood to create a pedestal for a new gas fireplace that was on order. I worked with Mike and got exactly what I needed for a great price. Their craftmanship is excellent and customer service was prompt and always good-natured. BEWARE! I was just alerted by Oregon Contractors Board that Joe Gengler dba Woodcrafters, has NOT BEEN LICENSED SINCE 2012! (You can verify this and file your own complaint through calling CCB) His old contract number was 65835 so use this for reference. How did I come to care about this information? I purchased several custom doors for a local clients' office space in Keizer. After Joe Gengler came to the job site and measured all the door openings for the "custom" doors. Joe Gengler told me it would be a 7-10 day turn around. (I have this in a text message) The first set of doors were delivered months later and with horrible gouges in the wood and unsuitable for a paint job. The painter refused to paint such terrible doors and rightfully sent them back. After they were "fixed" and finally painted and delivered to the job site, they all had incorrect hinge holes. When Joe Gengler sent his crew to retrieve them, they didn't tie them down in the truck, they all fell over and several glass panes shattered. This delayed the time sensitive project for many more days, even weeks. To his credit, he did agree to "remake" the doors but only after verbalizing his anger to me about how much it was costing him. The "custom" doors were delivered a second time after little to no voluntary communication from Joe Gengler. The second set of "custom " doors took several more weeks and I had to closely monitor the shop to shop transport and do my own quality control for the benefit of my client. Once the new and 2nd set of doors arrived, my contractor began the install. Much to all of our HORROR ...every single "custom" door was approximately 2 inches too short! At this point, the 7-10 day turn around I was promised was now exceeding 3 months and I STILL had no suitable doors to offer my client. With no return communication once again, I went down to Woodcrafters to see Joe Gengler. He promised me in person that he "believed in customer service" and would "make it right." He then promised to go look at the doors the next day. HE NEVER SHOWED. The following Monday I got a call from him saying that there was nothing wrong with the doors and they were "industry standard." (They were supposed to be custom) Then he proceeded to gaslight me saying that"the front door had the same 2 inch gap" which it obviously did NOT! He refused to replace or fix them. My client is out $2008 dollars from Woodcrafters and with no offer for repayment or replacement. Joe Gengler also offers "cash tickets" which includes no invoice for your project. We only received a phone call from the poor "accountant" claiming that we had a balance (which we promptly paid in the beginning) Now I'm understanding why he doesn't want a paper trail. Don't get caught up in this kind of loss. Please do yourself a favor and find another shop to deal with. If not for you...for the sake of not supporting local retailers who are swindling your friends and community. Thanks for reading! I really enjoy digging through their inside scrap bin. $4 -$5 a pound for small pieces of maple, mahogany, hickory, walnut, burl, etc. Is a great resource for a pen turner with the ability to break down the wood into stacks of pen blanks. The staff are knowledgable, although not always the most patient. This doesn't bother me, I actually enjoy the experience; however, some may find it off putting. But any minor annoyance is outweighed by their selection and knowledge. I shop here often, and will continue to do so. read more

Sales offered to cut selected wood at whole foot incriminate for free and resaw to halve the thickness. Salesman didn't mention the fee. There is a sign stating $5 min fee. Wood cost was $40+. Waited 30+ mins only to be told it would be another 20-30mins and offered to call when it was done. Two hours later, I call and am told management sent the shop guys home and our ordered wouldn't be available until the day after Christmas - 4 days later. Few minutes later, we're told manager was cutting it and would be ready shortly. Daughter went to pick it up and is told the salesman didn't charge for the resawing ($10 fee). While talking to manager/owner, he got extremely pissy at me and blamed me for he's staff not charging me. I offered to come in tomorrow to pay for it. As the conversation continued, he got more and more angry at me. All this was over $10. I'll have a really hard time going back in to make any future purchases! For those new to town, this is not a franchise of Woodcraft, the nationwide supplier, but a locally owned business with a strong emphasis on servicing builders. As such, the staffing levels have to rise and fall because of the intensely cyclical nature of the industry. Stuart, the manager, has always been square with me and as I have been downsizing he bought exotic hardwoods from me on terms completely satisfactory. In the sheet goods room they have every thickness of Baltic birch ply. Other sheet goods seem somewhat unexceptional (for my needs) but if there is something they don't have they will order it for you from Portland. The solid hardwoods are full retail price, as can only be expected, but they will cut to suit your requirements, i.e. you pay only for what you need. Saves a drive to Portland and to me it's worth it to pay a little more. They have periodic sales of popular species which are very attractive. There is a selection of hand and power tooling, finishing materials, rental floor sanders and nailers---it's a full service operation deserving better reviews than it has gotten. Great demo section of flooring and nice entry doors. Until a few years ago it had the best selection of woodworking books in the entire state. This may be no longer the case, but it was obvious that books were not a profit center and they have shrunk that section, though it still exists. I mention this to bear witness that in my opinion the management of this company went to uncommon lengths to service a hobbyist base that is pretty thin on the ground. read more

Terrible customer service! Don't expect anything without begging especially if you're a woman. I waited 20 minutes for them to "check" on a replacement door that was supposed to be delivered to my home 2 weeks prior. After saying they would go get it, they finally came back and said they couldn't find it. Several of our doors were warped and they had the audacity to ask how warped and then when we brought it in still looked at us like we were crazy. Negative five stars. Me and my boyfriend went to purchase some doors and instead we were waiting for over a half hour for an employee to help us. When someone finally came to help us, they had an awful attitude and acted as if we were wasting his time. The employee repeatedly sighed, rolled his eyes and gave curt one-word answers when we asked questions about the product. Please take your business elsewhere. read more

After wandering the entire store for 15 minutes and not being approached by sales staff, I went and stood in front of two men seated at their desks and asked if anyone was working on the floor. This location has a great display of products for easy selection. Joe's customer service and product knowledge is very impressive and helped us move our home remodel project forward without breaking our budget. New to the area didn't really want to shop at Lowes or Home Depot. I found Parr Lumber and Discount Lumber in Keizer though both good didn't have what I needed. One of the guys at Discount place recommended this place. These guys are great! Very pleasant and willing to work with you. Allowed me to take home a product to confirm it would work for my project without charging. Felt like I was back in my dads shop. Will be going here from now on. read more

He's reachable and helpful. He's gone above and beyond on a number of occasions where I needed a last minute change on an order that had been placed. Sure, maybe the store isn't glamorous and the parking lot sucks, but the customer service and the competitive prices on their products is what keeps me coming back! Actually, it should be no star. Poor service. Poor communication. Ordered a door on 10-15-15. There was a mixup by the door manufacturer, but Woodcrafters does not seem to be trying to resolve the problem. If you want timely service, you should go somewhere else....wish we had. read more

Customer service is not a priority here. One star is being generous. My wife and I were in the store for a good 10-15 minutes (it's not a very big store). One salesperson briefly said hi, then later walked past me, looked me in the eye, turned his head and walked away. The other salesperson when he finally got up from his desk, went to help somebody else 5 feet from us. Then when they were through he walked right by us without saying a thing. We sourced our entire door and trim package from Woodcrafters in Salem for our home remodel in 2015. The project included nearly 20 doors, a custom front entry, and all trim work for doors, windows and baseboard. We used high quality solid wood Simpson doors and CVG Fir for the trim. Their owner, Joe, personally came to our house twice to confirm measures, helped us with some custom design work for our entry, and went out of his way to help us. Overall, the service was great. Meanwhile, their pricing was totally in line with builder's prices, and much better than anything we found in the Portland metro area, both from well known big box home improvement stores, and contractor door suppliers. They provided free delivery to our finishing house as well. Keep in mind that Woodcrafters is a small, locally owned company, so don't expect slick salesmen and an over the top showroom. At times communication can be spotty. But they are the real deal. Authentic, helpful and a pleasure to work with. We whole heartedly recommend them. read more
