    Mahi Mahi (macadamia nut style)
    Steven K.

Ahh man I hate to do this to one of my favorite seafood spots, but my most recent visit was unfortunately very underwhelming. Stopped in for lunch the other day. Decided to order a cup of clam chowder and the Macadamia Nut Mahi Mahi entree. The clam chowder was flavorless. I've ordered this in the past, but I don't remember it being this boring. It would have greatly benefited from some salt. Disappointing. The mahi mahi was nicely cooked. However, the macadamia nut variation I went with was fairly flavorless as well. Absolutely 0 seasoning anywhere on that piece of fish. Felt like I wasted money by picking this menu item, would not recommend. Overall, disappointing to see one of my favorite seafood spots missing the mark on my last visit. Service was good as always, but the food was unfortunately a flop. I will be back, but I'll definitely be hesitant to branch out and try new dishes. Think I'll stick to what I know is going to be good.

We had a fabulous meal at Off the Hook for my birthday. I started my meal off with a Strawberry Aperol Spritz which was a fun twist on my favorite cocktail. We had the calamari as an appetizer. It wasn't the best one i've ever had but I did very much enjoy the lemon sauce that came with it. Some of the calamari was a bit chewy for my liking. For my entree, I had the Maryland Crab cake which had virtually no filler. It was probably the best crab cake i've had locally. My boyfriend had the Grouper with Chroizo. He said it was very good. Since I was celebrating my birthday, our server surprised us with free dessert. I chose the cheesecake which was wonderful. Overall, the service was wonderful and the restaurant is beautiful. We will definitely be back for our next special occasion.

It's worrisome when the name of the place is a humblebrag that could turn out to be all lies (looking at you "'Best' Teriyaki"), but this place earned its name. Everything here was wonderful. We came in with a big party and they found us a semi-private area in the back. The waitstaff had no issues accommodating, keeping the drinks flowing and the food coming! I decided to go with something weird like "strawberries and salmon" and it was an interesting but tasty choice. I probably wouldn't order it on the regular, but it was still good. Everything else, though, was top notch. I loved the clam chowder and stole a few bites of my wife's Chilean Sea Bass. The coconut rice pairs well with just about everything too, so I highly recommend getting that to share (although it's a bit pricy for what you get). They're definitely going for that fine dining vibe of small portions, high quality, and high price tag. But if you love seafood, it's worth trying for a special occasion.

Service was amazing, the staff was definitely busy but they still were extremely attentive. The ambiance is split, one side appears to be more formal and elegant and then there's the bar side where some folks were in jeans, but still upscale. The food was amazing. My only gripe was the fact that they were out of so many things...which just proves how good the food is but was heartbreaking at the same time. We got the crab cake which is the first crab cake I've ever had that was predominatly crab and no extra breading. The oysters were good but they were a little on thr smaller end, but I'm not truly well versed in oysters to know if thats just happened to be the type we ordered. For the entree I went with the pistachio crusted scallops just to try something different and honestly, wasn't too impressed. It seemed to lack any flavor or depth but the scallops were cooked to perfection so it was still worth it. My husband got the Chilean seabass which was out of this world. However the saffron risotto was also lacking a bit on the flavor. Drinks were great and so was the wine. Will be back again to hopefully get to try some things that have been restocked!

Definitely a fine dining, pricey dinner but absolutely DIVINE. Such a huge menu of options. The service is always top notch. Best seafood near Pittsburgh and that's above Wholeys, Roland's and anything in Mount Washington.

Celebrating our 9th anniversary this year and Off the Hook seemed like a great place to try. We've been driving past it for years and wanted to go for a special occasion. We've had a reservation and upon arriving we wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Our server came by quickly and shared the specials for the day. I wish they would print these out because after hearing a very descriptive explanation of them I wanted to then re-read what she has just said. She happily repeated herself but it was a lot to take in. Haha! We opted to get the appetizer combo special which had several pieces of fish. On a skewer there was swordfish, salmon, and tuna with an amazing creamy sauce, there was also a crab cake and a couple pieces of charred shrimp. Each had a sauce that was out of this world and everything tasted so good. For our mains, I got the scallops and my husband got the special, which was a cherry based seabass. His dish was a little more interesting than mine, much more powerful flavors, but my scallops were also super delicious. We each got a virgin drink--lavender lemonade and an orange ginger ale drink. Both were excellent! They offered us a complimentary dessert and we again opted for the special, which was a caramel cheesecake. Unfortunately, neither of us liked it. It was a rather "cheesy" cheesecake that came out in a big lump/pile, rather than a slice. Not a big deal of course, but kind of weird. Haha! The flavors were ok, but it had some sort of heat/spice to it that we didn't care for. Disappointing because I love a good dessert. We took a couple bites then had her package it up and we tossed it when we got home. Just not our favorite. The restaurant was clean, elegant, and comfortable. Our server was kind, attentive and helpful. Great experience overall. :)

The service is always excellent. The wait staff are well trained in the menu and extremely professional even in a big party. This place is beautiful and can be great for dinner with friends or a date night out. Food is perfectly cooked. They do have alternatives to fish but if you are coming here, seafood is the move.

We had a perfect night at Off the Hook! My husband specifically requested it for his 50th birthday dinner. We had excellent service from Bill who was very friendly and knowledgeable. Our cocktails were delicious and our meals were superb! We got the seafood trio appetizer, an 8 oz filet cooked perfectly Oscar style (with crab and asparagus), swordfish Parmesan style, and carrot cake for dessert. Our martinis were perfect! I highly recommend this upscale restaurant for any occasion!

This place was fantastic. Very attentive to detail, food came out promptly, and it held up to its standards of being "fine dining". Each dish was also phenomenal, we all got something different. The vibe is either for business dinners, dates, or a nice night out. Highly recommend.

A friend recommended Off The Hook and we needed to run errands nearby so decided to make it our anniversary dinner. It's a bit of a hike from the city and we ran 10 minutes behind. As we were pulling up, they called us and I assured them we were coming. Once we checked in with the host, we had an awkward wait. A 3 parties who had reservations at a later time slot (they got there 20 minutes early) and were seated before us / early. We were confused given that they called to check we were coming. Once seated we had a waiter in training who was helpful and did a nice job. The wine list is nice, beer options include a few local drafts. When we ordered they ran out of one of the specials, which was disappointing but we shall move on. Food wise: - Baked oyster - The amount of cheese overwhelmed the plate -Scallops - Cooked perfectly and the pieces of crab were delightful - Trout - It ended up being sweet, with the sauce which was unexpected. The almonds were placed on top, not crusted. Again, just not what we had anticipated. After we finished dinner, we were ready to move onto dessert. Unfortunately, it was a bit of an awkward wait again. We were done with our meals for 30 minutes before our dessert order and then a bit more of a wait for it to come out, making dinner longer than either of us planned. We did appreciate the anniversary details they included in our carrot cake (delicious with the cream cheese icing completing the cake well). Overall, it was a fine experience. Hubs got anxious with the awkward waits and I was more perplexed by it.

Pros: Excellent service - Tim was out main guy, but the rest of the team was wonderful as well We had a large group and used the private room in the back and everyone was well taken care of Even though we had a set menu, there were plenty of options of how we could have our protein prepared The Maryland crab cakes were the BEST I've ever had, which says a lot since I grew up in Maryland. Just enough breading to keep the huge chunks of crab meat together and it was perfectly seasoned and prepared. My colleagues had the salmon (Rodi style - teriyaki) and Strip Steak (medium rare - cooked perfectly). We all ate every single bit on our plates. Enjoyed the appetizer sampler and the salad to start Cons: The specialty cheesecake came in a bowl like a scoop of ice cream. It had a nice flavor, but the accompanying brownies were stale. Pro tip: Perfect for a special event or business dinner. This place will not disappoint!

Made a reservation for a Friday night at 7:30pm and I'm so glad that we did as this place was hopping! Lots of people coming and going at the bar and table sides of the restaurant and every table was in use for the duration of our dinner. Came here to celebrate an anniversary and the staff graciously offered a dessert on the house too. Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly and took good care of us the whole night. My wife and I ordered the appetizer special which came with a crab cake, 2 Cajun shrimp, and a skewer of salmon, swordfish and tuna bites. I really enjoyed this dish and the different flavors and textures--the sauce pairings were really nice too. For dinner I ordered Chilean sea bass and my wife got scallops. I really liked my dish but the cornbread was really dry. I thought my wife's scallops were cooked perfectly but then dish seemed under seasoned to me and lacked intrigue. For dessert we ordered the specialty cheesecake and unfortunately it just wasn't what we were expecting. My wife loves a slice of cheesecake, and that's what we thought we were getting, but this was more of a novelty cheese ball with Tajin and a fruit salsa. Certainly an interesting dish but just not what we had imagined it to be. Maybe if there was a way to provide an image or a little more of a description, it could've tempered our expectations. Anyway, not trying to knock it too hard, but maybe just a little recency bias since that was our last dish. All in all, a very good anniversary dinner!

Here are my ratings for what we ate: Passionfruit-Paloma Mocktail - 4 stars - sour. Spring Sangria - 4.5 stars - slightly fruity. Jumbo Pretzel - 5 stars - huge size with beer cheese and mustard sauce. French Onion Soup - 5 stars - This soup had a rich broth, onions, and cheese. Excellent Food in a Family-Owned Spot, But Transparency, Noise, and a Few Service Touches Need…read morePolishing (4/5 Overall)** I visited Wexford Public (12087 Perry Hwy, Wexford, PA) recently for dinner with my family, drawn by its reputation as a locally owned, chef-driven American restaurant in the heart of Wexford. Owned by longtime locals John and Melanie Dober, it positions itself as a warm, community-focused spot blending upscale comfort food with a welcoming vibe--think handcrafted sandwiches, premium Black Angus steaks, fresh seafood, flatbreads, and daily specials, all with thoughtful wine and bourbon selections. We were excited for what promised to be a polished neighborhood gem, and in many ways, it delivered. The food was genuinely great and the clear highlight. Our dishes were flavorful, well-executed, and creative without being fussy--fresh ingredients shone through, portions were generous, and everything arrived hot and beautifully plated. It's easy to see why so many reviewers rave about the crab cakes, steaks, and chef specials; the kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. This is elevated American fare that feels special yet approachable, and we'd happily return just for the meals. That said, a few aspects fell short and left us feeling the overall experience wasn't quite as seamless as the food deserved. First and foremost, the billing transparency issue was disappointing. They add a 3% bank/credit card processing fee to the check (which adds up quickly on a family dinner), but this isn't disclosed on the menu, at the table, or in any obvious way during the ordering process. There's only a small sign posted outside the restaurant. We only noticed it when the bill arrived, and it felt like an afterthought rather than a clear policy. In an era where many restaurants are upfront about surcharges (or absorb them), this lack of disclosure came across as sneaky and detracted from the otherwise positive value perception. The atmosphere was another mixed bag. The space itself is attractive--soft lighting, comfortable seating, and that friendly "upscale brew pub" energy the owners aim for. However, it was noticeably noisy during our evening visit. Conversations required raised voices, especially as the dining room filled up, which made it hard to relax and enjoy the meal fully. OpenTable rates the noise as "moderate," but on our night it tipped louder than that, possibly due to the layout or lack of sufficient sound absorption. A bit more attention to acoustics could make a big difference. Service was mostly attentive and efficient, but the management interaction stood out in a negative way. When we politely mentioned the surprise fee at the end of the meal, the response was an apology that felt scripted and insincere--like it had been delivered many times before without real follow-through or ownership. It didn't leave us feeling heard or valued as guests. On a brighter note, the owners John and Melanie genuinely come across as lovely people. The restaurant has that personal, homegrown touch you can sense even when they're not physically present, and locals speak highly of them. They were absent during our nighttime visit, though, which is understandable for owners juggling a busy operation--but their warmth is missed when the front-of-house team is handling everything solo. In summary, Wexford Public excels where it matters most: the food is consistently excellent and worth the trip on its own. The family-owned charm and diverse menu make it a strong neighborhood choice for special occasions, casual dinners, or even happy hour in the cocktail bar. However, clearer communication about the credit card fee (ideally on the menu or bill upfront), better noise management, and more authentic handling of guest concerns would elevate it from very good to outstanding. We'll likely go back for the cuisine, but with tempered expectations on the finer details. If you're in the Wexford area and prioritize great American plates, it's still a solid recommendation--just check the small print before you pay.
