I recently bought a used VW from a dishonest dealer. Thankfully I took it to Steve. First off, as a woman, I HATE dealing with male automotive professionals. Almost all of them will talk down to me or assume I know nothing because I'm female and somehow the two are related. I've started bringing my boyfriend with me when I took my car in to get work done because mechanics and autobody guys would actually tell him, in detail, what's wrong with my car without even addressing me. Then I went to Woodings. Not only is Steve a fantastic, knowledgeable mechanic: he actually showed me what was wrong with my car and explained it in detail. He never talked down to me, he just made sure I understood exactly what was wrong. And, on top of all this, he called me a few days later to check in on my car situation. I don't know how many mechanics or, really, any business that would do that. Take your car here for service. Love this place. I know my VW is in good hands at Woodings. Whenever I bring my car in for repairs they explain exactly what they have done and why it was necessary. I also appreciate how they review my cars "past history" before giving me advice. I always feel they are very experienced, thorough and use only high quality car parts. As long as I live in Brighton and own a VW I will take my car exclusively to Woodings for repairs and check ups. Never once have I felt ripped off and they always do an incredible job. I agree that this is one of the only non-dealer places to bring a VW in Boston (especially after the magical 50,000-60,000k mark with VWs, after which they seem to become "finicky"). However, every time I've brought my car here they've told me they "think" they solved the problem but that I should drive the car around and let them know if things keep going wrong. Every time, it turned out that the problem wasn't 100% fixed and I ended up going back there 1-2 more times. VWs are quirky, though, so maybe this would happen anywhere...? I also feel like they always try to convince me to fix things that don't need to be fixed immediately. For example, they told me something about one of my radiator fans being busted and how it could be dangerous, but my usual car shop in Needham said that unless I notice the A/C not working or the car overheating, it's fine. Bottom line, Wooding 's is way more affordable than the dealer. Just be clear about what you want/need done to your car and, if the problem you're having is not run-of-the-mill, be prepared for things not to be 100% fixed the first time around. read more

If you own a VW or Audi, you need Woodings in your cell phone. First time I went in there, I saw their little Buddha shrine int he front and knew I was in good hands. I asked for an estimate before they'd even looked at my car, and Bill gave it to me within 25 cents. The second and fourth times I was in, Steve fixed my car when other cheap chain places messed it up. Yeah, they're expensive when you're used to the $29 oil change. And my VIsa is still smarting from when my water pump broke this summer, which meant that the timing belt needed a change, even though it wasn't busted (if you're going all the way into a car to fix the pump, it's standard preventative maintenance to replace the belt at the same time). But they're also honest and straight shooters. And I plan to drive my car into he ground before I get a new one. The constant stream of cars in their quirky little building from all over, day in and day out, is a good sign about how their customers trust them. read more

I have replaced pretty much everything on that car. Woodings is honest, reliable and they have best prices. I can't tell you how much i love this place. I have been coming to Woodings Garage for 10 years, and they have helped me with three cars. They kept my Audi going until it finally puttered out at 18 years old. Bill Woodings, the former owner, served as a consultant when I bought a used VW Golf (he gave it a full inspection and provided a list of things that were good/bad about the car, which I was then able to use when negotiating the price). And, finally, they are now the mechanics for my Subaru. The ownership switched hands to a father/son team, who are the nicest hardest-working guys. They kept their primary mechanic, who is skilled at working with Audi/VW cars, but it's been a seamless transition to the care of my Subaru. I really trust these guys -- they do great work and try to find parts at reasonable prices, whenever possible. read more

I've been taking my cars (2004 Audi S4/2002 Audi allroad) to Woodings for the past 4 years and couldn't be more satisfied. I can't even begin to quantify the amount of money I must have saved vs. going to the Audi dealership in Brookline, which always tries to add-on services and seemingly ends up causing more problems than they fix. Woodings has not b.s'ed me once about recommended maintanence/service/replacement parts. I will never take my Audis anywhere else ever again. The price is right, the service and knowledge is excellent, and I know I can call them anytime for honest opinions--I actually consulted Steve before I purchased my allroad, which has 115k miles on it. I ultimately decided I was comfortable buying such an old car because I know I can trust and rely on Woodings to make it to 200k if it needs to. read more

Top notch Audi shop.... I like the way this operation is run...I brought my 2007 Audi S4 for a complete work up right after I bought it. Holidays and bad weather combined to keep the car in the shop for a couple of weeks but I was thrilled with the way the car performed after I got it back. Steve is very patient answering my near daily queries about status and new findings. I have a 11 year old Passat and have been bringing it to Woodings for the past 5-6 years and although parts break and things need replacing, the quality and timely fashion that these guys do with the car is second to none. I recently moved from Boston for work and boy oh boy do I miss Woodings. It might be in the worst location ever for me (getting to Allston from Rozzi or JP is a pain), but these folks are honest and upright people. Steve understands when you can't afford all of your repairs, and he helps you figure out what is needed right then and there and what you might be able to wait on. Steve is also just a really nice guy. One time I thought I lost a hubcap after they fixed something with my wheel. Without a second thought, Steve ordered the part and was set on replacing it for free. When I got there, he realized it was not the same side that he worked on. Obviously I explained that I was not trying to get something for free...and he totally understood and did not make me feel like a total dope. I miss Woodings! read more

They did a Timing belt on my dad's Camry even replaced 2 drive belts. I dropped it off at 9:00 am and got it back the same afternoon. Seems like a great bunch of mechanics and honest also. When my 05 hyundais Timing belt needs a change i will be bringing it there they did a wonderful job. Their pricing is also very fair!!! read more

I recently brought my '00 VW to Woodings. I had assumed the timing belt had gone on the car, which is a pricey fix. Through an initial diagnoses of the car, Bill called me at home and let me know that they had specified the problem coming from the area of the timing belt, and that the cost to replace timing belt, water pump and tensioners would run a little over a $1,000. I gave him the go ahead to fix this. Then a day later, he called back and said upon further review they narrowed down the problem to a pulley, which ended up saving me over half the original price. I can almost guarantee you the VW dealership would not have been as honest. Ze Germans build their cars differently than your Toyotas, Fords, etc. If you own a VW/Audi, do yourself a favor and take it to someone who specializes in them and you'll save big in the long run. read more

I noticed some issues with my Audi S4. I brought it in, and as the owner, Steve, was taking my contact info, he asked what was wrong. I gave him my take on the problem but he continued to press on what the issue was. I told him that I am not a mechanic and essentially that is why I was standing before him. He then explained that everything with Audi is expensive. I told him just tell me what needs fixing and we can go from there. I call him next day, he said he has no idea, and does not want to take things apart to figure it out. He said, " take it to the dealer". I said based on his reviews on the net etc. was surprised he would not take a crack at it. He then tells me to call Audi and find out what service was done in the past. I told him I could call them and find out some details. He then says he will think about whether to proceed. I call him the second day, and he says he is not sure what is wrong and that he is afraid to work on the car. I show up to pick up the car, and he has an invoice. He didn't do anything, and tried to sneak in an hour labor. I protested, naturally, I said you don't know what is wrong - you refuse to work on the car for reasons that you have not articulated, other than talking about how impossible Audis are to work on and that you dont know what could be wrong. I then look at the items on the invoice and word for word what Audi had said that needed attention in the near future, was transcribed onto this "invoice". He even acknowledged taking notes over the phone as I read him what needed to be done. The man is the cliche mechanic, will rip you off. I should have charged him an invoice! I did more work then he did! I also spoke with one of his coworkers who said basically he didn't want to service the car because it would take a few days to complete which would not maximize his profit, due to other cars he has incoming with lesser problems. Bottom line, the man has low integrity; he should have just declined the service, or at the very least not charge an invoice if the job was out of his scope. In closing if you have an Audi that has a problem that involves something more than changing the oil, I suggest taking it elsewhere. When a mechanic says it is "probably X, though I am not sure" which is exactly what I said by doing a simple Google search of the symptom - you know something is not right. If you need a man to drive your car around for a few days call Steve at Woodings Garage, he will be eager to take the challenge - and charge you handsomely for it. read more

I would like to take a minute to give this place an excellent review. I purchased and Audi from a used car dealer, which will never happen again, and after having Woodings see what the "check engine light " was all about they determined that I had purchased a lemon. The dealership who i will not name had not done any worl to get it ready, nor had they addresed any of the serious problems with it. They had a very thorough process with resonable prices. I got a very honest price and after realizing the mistake I had made they ended up saving me $$$$. Steve told me the truth about my Audi and what i could expect down the road. Truly the worst car buying expericene ever. Used car dealers can be very shady and beware when a car has a nice look to it. Mine was a 2006 A4 S-line and it was a beautiful car, however under the hood there was more problems than imaginable. I would highly reccomend this place. Lowered rating to four stars, I found a decent Audi dealer close by to me & realized that Wooding's Garage prices aren't extremely different. The dealership is much closer and cleaner than Wooding's. Plus the clean up my car and the wait is not too long, and have a waiting area, something I recommend Wooding's somehow figure out how to fit in their place, especially if they want out of towners to bring business. I still recommend Wooding's, but wouldn't head there unless get a price quote with a big difference than the dealership. read more

Steve was an honest straight shooter, actually refused to repair something because it wasn't going to be cost-effective for me. Did the timing belt on my GTI 1.8T quickly and saved me some money at the same time by avoiding the stealership. I was also getting a sound from the front end that sounded like wheel bearings, but he couldn't detect it, which was odd... I ended up having that taken care of elsewhere, but I would love to continue to use Wooding's to keep my VW running. read more

THIS PLACE IS GREAT! I recently needed a headlight replace on my 2005 Audi A4. I called the Audi dealership and they told me it would be $125 for one headlight. After doing research and finding woodings garage on yelp, I called up to see what their quote would be. $55 for BOTH head lights. I figured why not give it a try.... It was a great experience. Steve was very knowledgable and interested in helping me. I had both headlights change within 15 minutes AND he fixed my washer fluid sprayer thing (I don't know the technical term?) for free! Since my family has used Woodings as their primary mechanic for over 20 years, I feel comfortable speaking to their track record, both in the short and long term. We have had a variety of VWs worked on, from a 1976 bus to my ex's 2001 bug. First off, Woodings has always been accomodating in getting work done on my car - whenever there's been an emergency, they came through. As a woman, I sometimes have to fight to not be ripped off or lied to when it comes to mechanical or technical help. I have always been treated with respect and given the full information on what was being done to my car, why it was being done, and how to maintain my car in good shape. Woodings has consistently done whatever it takes to keep my car running (and running well), without either fixing (or encouraging me to fix) unnecessary things. One time Steve personally removed the backing from a piece of siding that came off my car (while working at his desk throughout the day) and reattached it, without additional charge. Time and again they have found ways to save me money on repairs, i.e. by keeping in their own files warrantee information on new parts I bought, and by extending an existing service special. Because of the kind of service I receive at Woodings, I have no interest in buying a vehicle that would require switching mechanics! read more

Woodings saved me around $900. My engine light came on and the dealer told me I needed to replace my catalytic converter for about $1100. I took it to Wooding's - Steve said that it was a problem with the flex pipe, not the cat. He sent me to Propipes (exhaust specialist) in Wilmington, who replaced the flex for around $200. This Garage is the only place I feel confident taking my car. It was recommended to me from a friend who takes his car here also. I had the timing belt on my previous car (VW Passat) replaced here and Woodings did a great job and it was a fair price. Now on my current car (Volvo S40) I recently had a flat tire and took it to Firestone to replace the tire, while I was there I was told that my suspension was shot and I had to get the whole thing replaced (They quoted me 1,200$!!!!!) When I took it to Woodings to get a second opinion, the told me that there was nothing wrong with my suspension, that the only thing broken was the control arm. (A much cheaper price, only 650$!!) I'll skip writing about how great Steve and the services are, other reviewers hit the nail right on the head. This review is for Audi owners who are tired of getting ripped off by a dealership. For starters, the service was $200+ cheaper than the Audi of Burlington quote. For those who say the dealership does more, thats crap. All the service details are made available to the public. He printed me off a list of what he did... it was the same as what I had researched. The only negative is that there is no place to sit and wait. Its not fancy like Audi dealerships, but for the money I saved, I'm cool with just hanging out at starbucks to wait for when the car is ready. read more

What a pleasure doing business with these guys! We have a Range Rover Supercharged which has been giving us problems and we kept bringing it to the Land Rover peeps and getting taken for a ride... if you know what I mean. I just took my 99 beetle there. It had been running very poorly earlier in the winter. My local garage told me I needed a new throttle body, that would cost $950! I stopped driving it for two months and yesterday had it towed to Woodings. It turns out the car had a) bad gas or b) carbon buildup. Steve cleaned everything up and charged me one hour labor. Just took my 08 A8 in for brake service. Steve provided a detailed explanation of what work was probably needed, gave a estimate and said he would call with specifics once he got the car apart. As promised, got a call from Steve with specifics on what was needed, just front pads and rotors....he then quoted me a firm price which was under the estimate that he provided earlier that morning! Gave the go-a-head for the work and the car was ready at the time promised and I was shown the old parts from my car. This is my second time using Wooding's. Defiantly top notch service! I find Bill particularly challenging to deal with, and even a bit dishonest and rude. He talks down to me, and was slow to give me an estimate or respond to my calls.
