    Beautiful day and Archery stations

Until Sunday I never knew this area of the park existed! I was booked for an Archery lesson on Sunday with Kathleen from Roberston Archers and my lesson was amazing. I was in awe of the large fields and I heard that they have lessons for beginners weekly with the intro class only being $5. In addition, not only is there an archery range, but also an axe/knife throwing area. After our Archery lesson, a very awesome and knowledgeable gentleman named Carlos offered to show us how to axe throw. It was fun and interesting the process of figuring out where to stand to get the best throw in. I had so much fun, and I loved discovering this hidden gem that I never knew existed. I must explore more, and would love to come back for Archery and maybe even knives throwing again in the future!

My friend had the idea to take archery lessons together! It was both our first time and we enjoy trying new things. Cyril was our instructor and taught us about safety, how to properly handle the bow and arrows, and form strategy and techniques. We enjoyed our experience so much and had a great time! Cyril was patient, knowledgeable, fun, and very kind! We definitely fell in love and will be coming back for more lessons!

Have you ever wanted to learn archery? Woodley Park Archers is the place to go if you are a beginner or experienced Archer! If you are a beginner you can attend an intro class for only $5!! Then you can attend regular practice sessions for only... $5!! The price is amazing! The staff does an amazing job with training the students & providing support to everyone there. If you're an experienced Archer, they have a range off to the side that is... FREE! This is a great place to go in Los Angeles area to get away from the busy day to day, and do something different & fun.

This is the place for archery in LA. We completed the beginner class and now ready to return to practice. The instructors were kind and patient. We had time to do one on one for better form and technique lessons.

Took my girlfriend to Woodley to try out archery for the first time! She's been wanting to go. Anyways Cyril greeted us as we came by and we immediately got down to business! He taught us about safety and also how to equip ourselves with the gloves, how to hold the bow, and mount the arrow. We had a fantastic session and unfortunately on a time crunch, but will definitely come back some time soon to attend more classes!

Went for the first time with friends and it was fun! It's clean, and everyone there knows what they are doing. You get many options of the distance you want to shoot. Most of the people were around the 10-20m slots. It is first come first serve. If you are new to archery, take note that you must say "CLEAR" along with everyone else before you can shoot. You have to wait until everyone is off the field before you shoot again. You also need to wait to retrieve arrows until everyone is done shooting. It is critical to be sincere and considerate of the other archers around you. There is also a lost and found area for arrows you find that are not yours. There is a small parking lot with plenty of parking available.

Get your arrows from Carlos @paintthearrow on ig - he is the absolute best! He also does lessons. He is my favorite archer ever - coolest cat I know! Everyone here is great :)

I came here for their free Saturday morning class. This place operates on donations, so if you are inclined, you can provide a monetary donation or buy a bottle of water for $1.00. What I liked about this place is that it is first come first served, so there is no advanced reservations required like the Pasadena Roving Archers, which also provides free Saturday morning classes for beginners. The park where this is held is rather large. We had to ask for directions since some parts of the park were for dog agility, etc. You'll eventually want to drive up a narrow looking road on the lefthand side, and you'll come across a small parking lot, restrooms, and a fence. It is suggested on their website that you arrive an hour early. When you arrive, you need to fill out their registration paperwork. This document is on their website, but they also provide copies when you arrive. Although this place is first come, first served, you don't necessarily line up or get helped that way. I would recommend standing near the trailer (which is where they keep all their equipment). That is where the line started for us on Saturday. You'll get fitted for equipment (they'll tell you which eye you are dominant in, and take measurements of your arm to figure out which bow to give you. Once this is completed, you'll be provided a bow, 3 arrows, and a finger guard. They are very detailed in their instructions and talk to you about their equipment and safety instructions. This as well as the fitting takes up most of the time. Once their safety and instructional demo is finished, they had about 3 instructors that help you get up for your first shot. If there's a big group, it takes a while for everyone to go through. I think all together, we were able to practice 3 or 4 times with our 3 arrows. People who have already gone through the instructions and safety demo are able to line up against the fence, get equipped and have a longer time to shoot their arrows while the newbies are going through their "orientation." Pros: -Free activity -No advanced reservations required -Educational -Fun for different ages! There were children as well as adults -Free parking and restroom nearby Cons: -They are strict, and will scold/correct you. For instance, if you are straddling a line but they don't think you are, they will scold you for taking out your arrows until you straddle the line. This happened to multiple people even though they were following instructions. -I heard from someone that one of the workers/volunteers said that our group was a "pain in the ass." We were not goofing off, so I'm not sure where that comment came from. That was really uncalled for and not professional. -Since this place is free, some of their arrows, for example are damaged and may be missing their wings, etc. Just be sure to tell your instructor so that they will switch it out for you.

This is definitely a must do! The instructors are very helpful and it's so fun! It's worth the experience. I honestly didn't know what to expect and it was so fun to learn a new skill. We enjoyed it very much and we will definitely recommend doing this outdoor activity.

Hunger Games training? No, not me. But asides from knife throwing, archery has always been a sport I have wanted to try. There's something fascinating to me about the silence of the arrow, the swiftness of it traveling through the air and the precision it takes to hit the target. Finally, I found the chance to try it at Woodley Park for FREE through some good friends of mine. Every Saturday, from about 8am-12pm, there are free classes for beginners, equipment included. They also offer classes on Wednesdays from 6-8pm. Woodley Park is located between the 405 and 101 freeways, between Burbank and Victory closest to Balboa in Van Nuys. It requires you to wake up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning, but once you get out there, it's definitely worth the treck and the training. Supposedly there's another place where you could train in archery for free in Santa Monica. It's called Rancho Park. I haven't been there yet but I thought I'd mention it in case people were wondering about other training grounds. For now, I'm pretty satisfied with going to Woodley Park. It helps to know that a US Olympian archer also trains there. Hunger Games? Nah. Survival training? Archery, isn't a bad skill to pick up, if you think about it.

I can't gave this place less than 5 stars! I have never heard of a public anything offering free services to the community. Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Get there early to secure your place in line. There is a required safety "class/course" you take when it's your first time and it kinda sucks, but after that first visit you are good to go on your own and shoot. When you are at the roundabout on Woodley, enter the driveway and there's plenty of parking.

    Having a great time!

Attended one of their free classes for a first time last Saturday. Me and my friend got there pretty early, and the spaces filled up pretty fast! Luckily we were able to get in. There is a lot of waiting, but some of the instructors are practicing while you wait so it it's pretty cool to watch. We were analyzing their techniques, so when the actual class started we had a better idea. They provide you with all equipment, make sure you wear it properly, specially the arm protector (I didn't wear it properly and got a huge bruise. The class lasts about an hour, if you have never done archery it is very interesting and helpful. I know a lot of people on my group thought it was too basic an boring. But we learned a lot. After the class they pair you with an instructor (there are about 4-5 instructors for a group of 25 so you have to wait for your turn), and you get to "shoot". Instructors help you perfect your technique, you have about 5 turns before they open the range to the "students" with more expertise (the ones that have taken the class already). By then the group gets pretty large and you don't get as much of 1 on 1 attention. But we were surprised because we actually felt pretty confident by then! You do learn a lot in such a short period of time. Overall you shoot for about 1 hr. The following time you come, you don't have to take the class, you can just start shooting (make sure you still come in time so you can get the gear).

Ask the Community - Woodley Park Archers

Are there any tables or chairs in the range where we can have a picnic while the kids are doing archery?

Yes! There are a number of picnic tables and benches at the open range and the short range. It's rare that they are completely full.

Every time I'm in town, I carve out space for a lesson here. They don't just hand you a bow and send you to the range. They break it down--stance, breath, grip--without condescension or ego. From absolute zero, they had me loosing arrows with something resembling grace, and over time, they've built me into a halfway decent archer. That's not just instruction; that's craft. The gear side is no less impressive. Advice here isn't about upselling--it's about finding the bow, the arrows, the finger tabs that actually suit you. The staff talks from the heart, from decades of pulling strings and hitting targets, not from a sales script. And the vibe? Generous, patient, and real. You're not judged for being a beginner. You're not rushed. You're simply folded into the ritual of a practice older than most religions. For someone like me, who arrives a tourist and leaves a little bit better than before--that's gold. There are multiple ranges, depending on what you want to shoot, a restaurant with quality food, a small bar (they do not allow you to shoot after drinking, but the reverse is fine), a gun shop with a very good selection and knowledgeable staff, and several events throughout the year. What really makes this place great is the staff at the ranges. If they see someone doing something unsafe, they call it out and put a stop to it immediately, which is what you want at a gun range. But more than that, they're friendly and more than willing to help you with tips on shooting or with any weapon malfunction--very important for new shooters. Guys like Savage and Jimmy really help make the rifle range an enjoyable experience. As far as the different ranges, there is a long row of shotgun clay/skeet shooting at the front when you pull in. That's also where you find the restaurant and some clean bathrooms. There is also a small shop with clothing, accessories, and some very high-end shotguns. This is where you check in for the shotgun range. To head to the archery range, park there and make a left past the main building and up a hill. I haven't been to the archery range yet, so I can't comment on it. For the rifle range, continue to the left past the ramp for the archery range. It's a bit of a walk, especially if you're carrying a bunch of weapons and ammo. It's paved, and I believe they have golf carts available to help transport you if you're disabled or just need the help. There is a small shop where you check in, with accessories, ammo, and targets available for purchase, as well as various rifles available for rent. At the rifle range, you can shoot most calibers of rifle, shotgun, or handgun (but no hollow points), so it's fun for all. You can set up cardboard target stands or use the steel targets spread throughout the range. I'm not sure how far back it goes--probably about 75-100 yards. I've heard a rumor that if you bring in a watermelon or pumpkin, you can shoot it, but I haven't checked the validity of that yet. The only negative about the rifle range is that the only bathrooms there are porta potty's. For the pistol range and gun shop, when you pull into the parking lot, instead head to the right, where there is an additional smaller parking lot. There are some nicer bathrooms out front. Inside is the pro shop/gun shop, where the guys (I think their names are Frankie and Rick) are very helpful. If you want to try any of the handguns before purchasing, they have them for rent as well. There is a paper range and a steel range. I believe that, aside from handguns, you can also shoot small handgun-caliber rifles there. At the paper range you can shoot hollow points (at least that was allowed last time I was there), but not at the steel range. There are about 10-12 stalls on each range. I don't think either range extends past 75 yards. For the paper range, you can purchase targets at the shop or bring your own to put on cardboard stands. One of the guys there is extremely helpful if you need tips or have any questions. I believe his name is Page-hope I got that right. On the steel side, they have a plethora of steel targets set at different distances. The nice thing about the steel range is that you never have to stop and wait while people change out their targets. There are also an additional two speed plate lanes at the end that are first come, first served. Again, the employees do a good job of keeping an eye on everyone and maintaining a safe environment. Don't forget to bring ear and eye protection. But if you need it, they have both available. I don't think they currently charge you to borrow either. They also have memberships available, with massive discounts on the membership a couple of times a year during events. One tip - if it's your first time, make sure you fill out the waivers online before you go. It will save you time when you get there. There is a main waiver everyone signs, plus additional waivers for each range you plan on using (ie shotgun, rifle, archery, pistol, etc.). I highly recommend Oak Tree to anyone looking to try shooting for the first time, anyone looking to purchase a firearm and try it out first, and experienced shooters looking for a good, safe, convenient place to shoot.

The bays are nice and wide, lots of space to comfortably shoot on the steel range. Reasonable pricing and the location is a nice and quiet woodsy forest vibe. There is parking in front of the club/restaurant/shotgun range (Rifle is to the left), as well as if you hit a right, there was a bit of parking in front of the pistol ranges and gun store. Due to my distance they let me make an appointment and wait for my service to be completed. The Gentleman who installed the string made sure it was fully setup and ready to shoot before I left and even gave me some good pointers to help with my form. I also purchased a takedown recurve for my young daughter who has been wanting to shoot archery ever since she saw my bow. The pricing was very fair and the service was fantastic. Everyone there from the staff to the customers was welcoming and the staff was especially knowledgeable. I am officially making this my recommendation for those in need of archery supplies and service. I did not take an actual lesson but the tips and adjustments given to me while I was testing out the new string were spot on. I am sure anyone getting a lesson here is getting the correct information needed to either learn to shoot or take their shot to the next level. 5 stars all the way...

They do take walk-ins, but I booked a 30 min private archery lesson for 3 ppl online with Valerie for $75.00, added on 1 more person at the shop for $15.00. We learned so much in such a short time- like stance, grip, draw, and release, safety and range etiquette. By my 2nd round I had a nice grouping of arrows.Good times at Bullock's Archery for sure, thank you very much for having us today!

I was fortunate enough to book a class, since they still had openings. In order to book, you are required to pay $5 per person, and each person shooting needs a reservation. For the first time archer classes you need to arrive 15 minutes to sign in, get placed with a group/instructor, get the gear (they measure your arms, for the bow and arrows) the first-time archer classes are 8 AM and the returning is at 10 AM. Our instructor was very informative and helpful throughout the class. We also benefit from having a trainee in class where he was shadowing the main instructor. He was helpful with assisting and correcting our form. I was in a group with 9 other people. Each group was led by an instructor and taken to their own shooting area to learn the etiquette, rules, and how to shoot properly. He provides demonstrations and tips for correct shooting. After each demonstration, instructor invited the group to the line to practice shooting. Instructions were very clear and helpful. At the end, they provide balloons as targets to shoot. If you were able to pop the balloon, you get a cool pin. After the class was done, the instructor gave us a card to show proof that we've taken the first class, and we can sign up for the returning class if we decide to. Parking is limited. There is a small parking lot and it gets filled quickly. Come early or park on the street and walk down the hill.

There are also more of a long range targets if you are into that. The range is very well maintained, never too crowded, and the whole experience is just unmatched. I have been to several archery ranges and this is absolutely in its own league. Per City of Pasadena regulations you need to be certified to practice at the range, which entails about an hour long class and a small fee. Just keep in mind that it will take about a month to get your cert sent to you, so do it in advance. Absolutely worth it. Any interactions I have had with the staff and members of the club have been great. They also have classes, competitions, events, etc. Once a month (I believe 3rd Sunday of every month) they put up 3D targets, which are a lot of fun. Honestly, this place is a gem. P.S. It is also the oldest continuously operating field archery range in the world.
