We use Wood's for every car repair that we need. They have, for many years, taken care of my mother's car, and gone way out of the way to take care of her personally. As we lived out of town, this was one area that we felt comfortable - we knew that Wood's was watching out for her as far as her car was concerned. I pulled into this service station 70 miles from home with a locked up front brake on my van. It was 6:30pm on a Saturday. After talking about towing my van all the way home or leaving my van there until Monday, the awesome guys working there that night, fixed my brake and had me and my daughter and our home. I was shocked by a $205 in town towing charge. Called to ask why the rate was so high, employee suggested they have "accident rates" and "cleanup fees". When I asked to speak with the owner / manager I was told that was "what we charge" and that nothing would be done. Despite the body shop suggesting this was the highest tow rate they'd seen. I can't imagine that their repair shop is any more reasonable. Beware. read more

These guys are as good as it gets in my opinion. I've been here many times over the past few years and whether it is for a quick fill up or repair work the staff have treated me very kindly.. I got the distributor replaced in my car at Wood's for over 700 dollars. It went out two years later when I called them up to talk to them about it they had asked me if I still had my receipt and I told them I couldn't find it and they told me that they have no computerized files and that they throw out all files that were over two years old so basically they refused to help me. The man I spoke to on the phone was very rude to me about the whole situation. They are over priced, use cheap parts and their customer service is terrible. After I had to get it replaced for the second time I did some calling around and another shop told me they would do it for $400 when woods charged me $700! Honestly I think the only reason they stay in business is because they also run a towing company! I would never recommend them to anyone! read more

Personal plus... these guys are great, service with a sense of humor and kindness. Who else pumps you gas and washes your windows these days. Wood's generally gets very good reviews, so hopefully my experiences are the exception. That, and the fact that my normal mechanic is across town, is why I went with them after a very bad experience the first time I got their "help". Either way, I won't be going back for a third try. My car died and would not start, so the tow guy jumped it and it ran for approximately 2 minutes. At that point, it was towed to Wood's. I talked to the mechanic when I arrived and told him that the car would not start, it was jumped and ran for a couple minutes, and that it is probably either the battery or alternator, but I'm not sure. He told me he would get to it either later that afternoon, or the following morning. The following afternoon, after not hearing anything, I called to check if they had an estimate when they would be able to get to it. The only response I got: "I haven't got to it yet, I'll call you when it's done". The next afternoon, still haven't heard anything, so I stopped by to see if they were able to get it in yet. Again, the guy barks at me: "I'm the only one here, I'm just getting caught up today, I'll get to it tomorrow". Obviously, he was being defensive, and taking offense to anyone questioning his work. The problem is, I'm not trying to put pressure on the guy, I was barely able to get two sentences out in all my dealings with him. But I do need some estimate of when my car will be looked at, so I can plan borrowing another vehicle, and if it will be too long I can take it elsewhere. So, finally, a little over 3 days after bringing it in, he calls and leaves a message: "Your car is done, it was the battery". I get there 2 hours after he left the message, and he comes at me with: "I've been calling and calling, you wanted your car so bad and then I can't get ahold of you", and repeats something similar a couple more times. Again, I was there two hours after the one time he called. So I pay for it, and come back to drive it home a couple hours later. I get a mile and a half down the road and it dies again, in the middle of traffic. After a minute it started again, but died two more times in the remaining mile and a half home. It is now sitting in my driveway, won't start, and is waiting to be taken to my normal mechanic. read more

I went in for an oil change at the dealership and was told that my inner tie rod needed replacing. The quote was for over $1200. When I questioned why I had to replace my rack and pinion too when all I needed was one inner tie rod, I was told that it was a package that the manufacturer sent out and the dealership had to replace all of it at the same time. Checked this out on youtube, and NO, not true according to numerous people's videos demonstrating how easy it was to change the inner tie rod on my particular make, model and year. So I called Wood's Marathon in Okemos on the recommendation of neighbors. I now have a new tie rod and total bill was $252. I saved $1000 by not using the dealership's repair shop. I get it that if you look at my car and I choose not to have work done, you've still spent time looking at it and time is money. Fine. Not quite the same thing though when you don't tell me first that it sounds like it could end up being the type of work that you do not do, look at it and then tell me it is probably the head gasket and we don't do that. Because this way I don't even have the option of putting that charge toward the repair. I knew it was probably something like that wrong, so a mechanic had to have known that was a possibility --should have told me right away, it could be such and such, and we don't do heavy engine work here so would not be able to help you if that is the case; and you will still owe us $83 for the time we spent diagnosing it. Then, you will have to find somewhere else to fix it, get it towed away, and pay us the $83 you owe us first before you can get it towed. Also, it will sit here for 3 days before we look at it (including the weekend/closed so not their fault but could have chosen a different place and saved on this time), then we will tell you we can't fix it and you have to start over with getting it somewhere so that they can diagnosis it themselves--because everyone will just tell you they have to see it to know what is wrong, etc. Okay, so fine; maybe it COULD have been something simple that you could have fixed so you didn't bother to mention that you likely would not be able to help me until after you looked at it. Whatever, it happened. Maybe you honestly had no idea that it was going to end up being "heavy engine work" needed. Fine. But then why this... I contact Woods to say that I need to make arrangements to get it towed out of there. Woods says, well you owe us $83. I say fine, so are you saying I have to pay that before I can get it towed away? Yes, they say. Alright, well I will give you my credit card number then over the phone, and I need to make sure of details on when I can get it towed/when someone will be there to give the keys to the driver, etc. Woods says, we don't do that/can't take the credit card over the phone. Need to have a signed authorization. Well, I have NO CAR with which to drive up there to sign an authorization. You do see me broken-down car there, correct? I can't drive it and it is with you/not with me. What nonsense, I've never heard such a thing. This is what we do with credit cards, that is one of the conveniences of having a credit card. WTF! Quite frustrated with this whole experience with Woods. I really don't think they handled any of it well; there are many things they could have done differently. read more

This is a great place. Reliable, helpful, friendly, courteous. They do a great job with your car. I've got a car with 250,000 miles on it-- and the car is still running due to the great service these guys provide. You can trust them-- which is a very rare and special thing to say about many places you take your car these days.
