O my goodness. I was terrified of getting a root canal done. D.D.S An was awesome! I went in for my consultation super nervous and he easily sold me on how good he was. He said sometimes people even fall asleep during his root canals. My anxiety is extremely bad and I couldn't use nitrous because it would get in the way of the root canal. Man he was not lying I legit felt almost zero pain, I kid you not. He was professional and went right to it. He made sure I was good and comfortable and told me what he was doing and my goodness he was right. After they numbed me up I legit felt no pain. I would only use him moving forward. I was way more scared than I needed to be. And of course he called later on a Friday night to check in on me! Not a lot of people do that. 10/10 would only use him moving forward. This is a way overdue review of my very positive experience with Dr. Yang and her practice a few weeks ago. I was on the verge of either doing a major root canal or losing my molar teeth altogether due to years of severe grinding & bruxism. Because I had severe pain on my lower left molar, my periodontist, after examining me, told me that I needed a root canal for my bottom left molar. He initially referred me to another endodontics dentist in San Mateo to perform the root canal, but I did some additional research and found Dr. Yang (mainly looking at her high Yelp reviews). Because the pain is caused by severe bruxism, I felt that a root canal may not resolve the pain - because I would still grind my teeth after the root canal, so the procedure may be a waste for a teeth grinder like myself. Dr. Yang started out by taking an X-Ray of the painful molar. She then looked closely at the molar and X-Ray, then recommended me to take a 3D Image of the teeth, which I did (based on her recommendations). It turned out that I may not benefit from a root canal, because my problem is related more to a periodontal issue. Rather than recommending a major procedure like a root canal or an extraction with bone-grafting (which could have been more significant procedures that would generate more dollars), Dr. Yang told me she suspects it is more of a periodontal issue, but not root canal. So Dr. Yang referred me to Dr. Ronderos (another teeth-saving, excellent dentist), and she also recommended using softer toothbrush so my receding gum-lines wouldn't get worse. Dr. Yang clearly cares about her patient over just doing the next root canal procedure. Dr. Yang is an excellent example of how every dentist should be: honest, caring, methodical, and with high integrity. I went to see Dr Ronderos, and now, my left bottom molar no longer hurts, and I won't need a root canal and it looks like we can save that tooth. Without Dr. Yang's careful diagnosis and referral to Dr. Ronderos, I would have lost my teeth - either to a root canal or an extraction - neither of which are viable options vs. saving the teeth. If you read my review of Dr. Ronderos, you will see what Dr. R. did for my teeth and my bruxism. My teeth pain is now gone for a few weeks, and I no longer need to lose my natural teeth, thanks to Dr. Yang and Dr. Ronderos. I am eternally grateful for Dr. Yang, putting me on a path of saving my teeth and being an excellent dentist who cares about her patient. So you're researching endodontists. You might be in some manner of physical pain right now, and worried about experiencing more. For that, I'm so sorry, and I'll cut to the chase. My experience with Dr. Gregory An at Woodside Endodontics was thoroughly positive. Decades ago, I had root canal treatment (elsewhere) that over time developed an infection at the root tip. Dr. An determined that it was time to re-treat the tooth by doing another root canal. In my case, I wasn't in any pain, and I wanted it to stay that way. Dr. An reassured me that we wouldn't even have to remove the existing crown first, and I was sold because I know from experience that in and of itself this meant less discomfort for me. There's a small parking lot, and there are stairs and an elevator that go to their second floor office. The office is air conditioned and has a private bathroom. Everyone on staff is kind and the office atmosphere itself is very chill. The retired endodontist Dr. Gustafson took all of the beautiful and peaceful fine art nature photos on the walls, all of which support the office's framed mission statement (summary: give all patients a great, chill experience). The atmosphere makes a very big difference to me in medical settings, and this one does the trick. Assistant Ida is skilled and kind. Dr. An went through the numbing process with a light touch that I barely felt, even though I happened to need a particularly lengthy numbing process. He proceeded very gently through the entire retreatment, and I was very impressed with how slowly and gently he moved, yet how simultaneously quickly he finished the whole procedure. I was given a time estimate of two hours, and I was in and out of there in an hour and a half. I get that some of this is the luck of the draw - until you get inside there, it's hard to predict exactly how a tooth will behave - but I've got enough experience with this sort of thing to know that this was a thorough, yet well-paced procedure. The before and after xrays were like night and day. Before: messy. After: model-perfect. We went over the scans immediately afterward, and I left feeling confident in the aftercare process, as well as in my next steps. The office assistant gave me a care kit afterward, containing ibuprofen, bottled water, lip balm, a snack, and helpful instructions. I felt confident that my dental insurance claim for this procedure was handled very well, since the first claim for my previous intake appointment went through great. A little later in the evening, Dr. An called to check in with me to find out if the local anesthesia wore off (it had) and how I was doing (great, as if nothing had even happened). I'll do my aftercare, and return for a follow-up in a year. Teeth go wrong sometimes, and although I wish nobody ever needed to visit an endodontist, an endo I recommend is Dr. An, a lovely human being and a skilled endodontist. Feeling like I never even had a root canal is the best outcome of actually going through one (a second one on the same tooth)! May your own tooth travels be easy. read more

What a amazing and kind Doctor, Dr. Yang is. I had a horrible infection in my tooth and was in extreme pain. Her office got me in immediately and got straight to work. After the initial visit, Dr. Yang called me later in the evening to check on me and my pain. I felt very cared for and knew I was in great hands, I ended up having to have a root canal and went back for my second visit. Root canal is not my idea of a fun day, but given that constraint my time spent with Dr. An was time well spent. I went in with a painful condition, Dr. An performed an evaluation and recommended a root canal, as expected. The procedure started immediately, and the discomfort was minimal - I spent most of that 40 minutes reminding myself I wasn't in pain, and the sooner it's over the sooner I will be better, I should relax. It took several hours for the anesthetic to wear off, but that was not replaced by pain. I took an advil before bed just in case (I didn't want to wake up in pain to take a pill) but that wouldn't have been necessary. I'm on day 2 now, exactly as Dr. An predicted - the tooth is a bit sensitive to pressure, and I'll be chewing on the other side for a couple days probably, but the constant ache of my tooth and jaw is gone, my headache is over. My wife stole the KitKat from my care package, and that's the worst part of my root canal. I would have expected worse, but Dr. An didn't give me enough time to worry about it. I went to Dr. Yang with a Bone infection and she discussed with me my options to clean out the infection and re-do my root canal (she didn't do the first one, it was over 10 years ago) or get my tooth pulled and eventually get an implant. Dr. Yang really wanted to try and save my tooth with the root canal and I agreed. She was absolutely amazing, kind and gentle. Going to the dentist is very hard for me and I have a lot of anxiety when going. She made sure I was comfortable and that I did not feel any pain. In my 27 years of living, I have never enjoyed going to the dentist. Never! NOT UNTIL TODAY. I had a root canal done with Dr. Gregory An and wow, wow, wow. They had soft pillows, the chair was super comfortable you could fall asleep in it, Dr. An takes you through every single part of the process, they give you ibuprofen after your visit is done (knowing that you might experience some pain), and just every part of this experience was so well thought-out. I was bummed to learn that I needed a root canal. My dentist highly recommended Dr. Gustafson as the best and said that it'd be painless and take about an hour. I had my root canal this morning and it didn't hurt. I'm glad to have found a skilled and super nice endodontist. There was a memory foam cover on the dental chair to make it extra comfy and they put dark glasses on me to protect my eyes. Can't believe I'm writing a 5 star rating on a root canal, but it has to be done. I've hardly had any dental work done and am generally terrified of going to the dentist, so when I was informed I needed a root canal due to a cracked molar, I was filled with abject horror. I called another office first, but they were booked way out and pretty rude on the phone. Enter Woodside Endodontics. I spoke with Sam in the phone who was incredibly kind and helpful. He knew I was in pain and got me in as soon as possible for a consultation and the work at the same appointment. I was checked in the following morning professionally and quickly, sat down in the chair, then the heavens parted and in walked Dr. An with his smooth, professional demeanor and incredibly calming voice. He was examined me, took x rays, numbed me up, and we were on our way. The procedure took 30-40 minutes tops. His assistant is top notch, together, they make a finely tuned machine. I rarely write reviews unless someone is truly exceptional, that was the case when Dr Yang did a root canal on me. Normally a root canal is something you wouldn't describe as painless. But I can honestly say it was painless. Dr Yang's total concern for the patient's pain tolerance is what makes her the only dentist I will go to if I need a root canal. She makes sure nearly every minute that the patient is feeling no pain and if there is any she stop and add more novacaine or discuss options to eliminate any discomfort. She also explains everything to the patient both before the procedure, during the procedure, and after she is finished. The staff, especially the dental assistants are professional and friendly. I had 3 root canals done by Dr. Ahn, two new ones and a redo of one that had an issue. I can honestly say that I felt hardly any pain at all during the entire 3 hours spread over two appointments. He is super careful about causing any distress and will tell you beforehand when you might feel a prick or some pressure or some vibration. Moreover he called to check on me in the evening. By then, I was completely fine and did not have to make use of any pain medication at all. For a pain-free root canal, or as nearly totally pain-free as it is possible to get, I would highly recommend Dr. Ahn and his staff. read more

I had my root canal with Gregory An over two years ago but found this draft lying around. The experience was very good and currently, my root canal'ed tooth is in tip top shape! I appreciated the attention to detail and care shown throughout my visit. The quality of care was noticeably higher than my previous experiences; I've had 2 root canals, one with a dentist, and the other with another endodontist. He was very clear and communicative, walking me through the procedure both before and after. This review is WAY OVERDUE! After leaving from having my Root canal done and all numb I can truly say that I have had a great experience. If I can give then 10 stars I would! Like really! Office area is small but very welcoming when you walk in! Everything is so clean and tidy! I came here last year May 2014 as my past dentist sent me here for a root canal. I was surprised to see how quick I was able to get an appointment in. I spoke to the Office Assistant Mary Lou, who by the way, is always SO pleasant to speak to over the phone. Even with my busy schedule she was able to fit me in for an appointment. She scheduled me for an appointment with Dr. Gregory An and as I was extremely nerves he made sure to make me feel very comfortable. Let me just admit that the chairs are SO comfortable and I felt well relaxed. I have to admit I was almost falling asleep! 6 months later I was back in Dr. An's chair getting the root canal re-treated. I was nerves once again and didn't know if the experience was going to be as the first one or painful. But little did I know it was a piece of cake. What really meant a lot to me is that they still were able to accommodate me even after being 40 minutes late for my appointment this morning. Okay..so I am not ALWAYS early to my appointments but as traffic was insane and I couldn't do anything about it I still was able to get my root canal done today. Great experience in getting a root canal done. I was referred to Dr Gregory K An for a root canal and have nothing but good things to say about him and his staff. They took care of my tooth, followed up with phone calls to make sure I was doing well and scheduled a follow up apt to be curtain everything was done right. I was SO NOT excited to be here. After being in excruciating pain for three days from needing my very first root canal I was in no mood for more pain. My anxiety was off the charts to say the least. However, I was referred by Dr. Terry Codington of Aloha Dental and I trust him and his office so off I went. Upon arriving, the staff was meeting near reception - they all turned to me with a smile and said "we've all been waiting for you". It was so funny and started my visit off with a bit of laughter. I instantly relaxed a bit. From reception to Dr. An, the experience was amazing. Everyone is so kind, helpful, at ease and soothing. There was no stress. I was informed of everything which took away some of my worries. And when I met Dr. An, can I just say WOW. He has THE most amazing voice and bedside manner. It was almost hypnotic. I instantly felt at ease with him and his dental assistant. Not only was he very gentle, he is also very confident in his work. I honestly cannot say enough great things about him. My experience could have gone very differently and I will always be grateful for his patience and kindness. The only pain I felt was the initial numbing with the needle. Aside from that he made a not so fun situation as pleasant as possible. To top it off I rec'd a phone call from Dr. An at 8pm to make sure I was doing ok. My appt. was at 9:45am earlier that day. It is odd to write a raving review about a root canal. But Dr. Gus and his office are fantastic. I had to get a root canal yesterday morning and I was surprised that it only took 1.5 hours and also that I had no pain during the procedure. Dr. Gus has a very good understanding of where nerve endings like to hide and covered all the endings I had so well, I had zero discomfort. I was very glad for the goodie bag the office gave me as I was leaving and the instructions were very clear. I also really appreciated the follow up call to see how I was doing later in the day. I hope I do not have to have another root canal but if I do I know where I am going to go for it. read more
