This morning, out of nowhere, my car had a horrible clunking in the engine compartment. Sounded unsafe to drive. Woodway Automotive was close so I called and was able to get in immediately. When I arrived, the mechanic looked at the car and identified the problem within 10 minutes. Fixed it right then and there at a very reasonable price. I was out the door in 25 minutes. A less reputable place could have told me my engine was going to fall out and I would have believed them (it sounded that bad) and I would have had it fixed. Online reviews are a mixed bag. I usually only take the time to write one when I'm pissed off, but this is different. Somebody asked me for a recommendation for a mechanic and I told them I'd used Carl at Woodway Automotive for at least 15 years and never had a problem they didn't make right. Then my friend mentioned that the "Yelp" reviews were bad. Well, as of the time I'm writing this, there are only 3 of them, and they seem to be singular experiences, so I thought I'd throw something else in here. I've had a lot of used cars over the years - I have tried other mechanics on occasion for convenience (Dunn's, Freddie Kish), and I think those guys are reputable, but they've got several mechanics, and my experiences there have not always been great. At Woodway Automotive, I deal with Carl, and I trust Carl. Nobody's perfect, but over the course of 15 years and probably 8 cars, I cannot give a higher recommendation than Woodway Automotive. I've never written a bad review before today. I really don't even want to write this but I have to. Two weeks ago I get a bad nail in my tire on my way to Austin. Tire empties so fast I have to put the spare on. Throw my rim and flat tire in the back of my pickup. Enjoy the weekend in Austin before coming back to Waco on Monday. I go straight to Woodway because they are close to my work. I drop the truck off around 9AM. Go in, tell the guy I need it patched and remounted on the rim. He says they only do plugs and that he'll call me when it is ready. I go back 8 hours later, pay 17 bucks and hit the road. Driving down 84 I notice the car starts to violently shake around 55mph. I slow it on down and take it back. Ask the guy, 'Hey man, this thing is shaking pretty bad. Any idea?" He says, 'No. I plugged it and should be good to go." I ask if he balanced it. He says no, but takes the time to run it on the machine. "Looks fine," he says. OK. Let's try again. I drive down the road and same thing. Starts to wobble like crazy. I take it back one more time and ask if there is something missing. Maybe I messed up the belt? Maybe there is a dead spot? He says no. I ask him politely if he would like to give the truck a whirl so he can feel what I'm talking about. He says he can't leave the shop, even though the only person there was helping him. Must have been a friend, but oh well. He doesn't have the time. Now I'm debating my options. The thing rode fine with the spare on, and now like crap with the tire back on. It has to be the tire, right? I get talked into buying a used tire. Ugh. OK. Coworker tells me to go to Garcia's on 18th. I tell Garcia's the tire is gone and that I need a used one. He looks at me puzzled. "That tire? It looks brand new?" I know, but it's not right I tell them. They take the tire off the rim and what do you know!?! There is a gallon of water in the tire. That's right. Woodway Automotive sent me down the road (after $17) with a plugged tire that had roughly a gallon of water inside. No wander the car was shaking like crazy! Garcia's took the tire off, emptied out the water, patched (not, plugged), remounted the tire and charged me only $10. They found out what was wrong, fixed the problem, fixed Woodway's work and charged me around half what they did. A few days go by. The tire is good, the trucks drives fine, but the tire sensor is still on. Hasn't gone off in a week. There's little doubt in my mind it was the water in the tire that messed it up. It is now time to confront Woodway about my findings. I'm not mad. A little ticked off, but not mad. I walk in and see the dude. I calmly tell him I'm not mad and that I'm not looking for an apology, but I just want to tell him what Garcia's found and to hear me out man-to-man. I tell him that the tire he put on had a gallon of water in it and that was the reason why the truck was wobbling. "That's not my fault. I didn't put water in your tire. You paid 20 bucks for me to plug your tire and put air in it. That's exactly what I did," he said. I couldn't believe it. He essentially told me it was my fault. Maybe I did bring him the tire with water in it- who knows. But the bottom line is that this guy mounted a tire onto a rim that had a gallon of water and sent me on my way after charging me 20 bucks! How does a guy even not notice that much water in the tire before airing it up? It's either laziness, incompetence or both. It wasn't my job to put a safe wheel on my car. It was his job, that's why I gave him 20 hard-earned dollars. He is supposed to be looking out for me. I can't fathom how a professional mechanic/tire guy could screw up so badly. And to not even test drive it for 5 minutes? And then afterall this, he gives me attitude? Unreal. I wasn't going to write this. But after him telling me it wasn't his problem, and that it was probably my fault, I have to aware others. These guys are the reason why so many people do not like, or don't trust mechanics. Save your money, save the headache, take your loved ride to somebody else. I hope I can get the dealer to fix the tire sensor. read more

I took my car there after I got some diagnostic work done at Nissan. I purchased the parts much cheaper at Advanced Auto Parts and they put the parts on me for way less than Nissan was charging me. read more

I took my truck to woodway automotive because my ac was not working right. I was charged $65 diognostics and told my ac controler was bad. I was told $575 to replace my controler and $157 to install it. I went to Anderson Salvage in Troy, TX and got an ac controler for $150 and installed it myself. Two days later, driving the truck twice, the same problem reocurred. i took it back to woodway automotive and said it can't be the controler like you said, because it still has the same problem. I questioned them if the first ac controller was realy bad in the first place and I feel that they did not go far enough the first time to trouble shoot the problem. They said to drop the truck off the following monday Later that day, I got a call, they said I had a vacum hose that looked like it was eaten thu by a mouse or something. I was told the first controller was bad and the second one I installed was good. They said the problem was a mouse or something ate threw a vacum line and they replaced it. I feel that they did a quick check, charged me $65 and told me it was going to cost me $732 to get it corrected. Only to find out that the ac controller was not the problem (I belive), in fact it was a vacum hose. Good thing I was not a woman. They did not charge me to make the fix on the vacum hose. They get a A-OK only because they made it right when I challenged them. Be on your toes. read more

Highly recommended. They are closed on Sunday's is my first and only complaint. Definite small town feel. It's not a fancy place but the guys that work there sure did a great job on our car and gave us a helluva deal. Will be back with any car problems. read more

We have used this automotive repair facility for many years. They have always given us excellent service at reasonable prices. I would like to share one recent example of their honesty and integrity. We took one of our cars there to have several different services. They efficiently fixed the tire sensors but told my husband that he should take the vehicle to the dealer for the power steering problem as this was considered a "reported issue" and should be fixed at their expense. It was, indeed, a potentially serious problem, and the dealer did make this expensive repair. Woodway Automotive could have fixed the problem, charged us a great deal of money, and we would never have been the wiser, but they did not do that.
