Finally made a visit to Work the Metal today while in the area and adored it! I'm putting together a "sunshine" care package and this was a perfect place to get a lot of items. Shout out to Moss Hill for the Sunshine lotion and Southern Sunshine soap. There is such a wide array of items from aesthetic cooking utensils, unique cards, local gourmet foods, rugs, boutiquey dresses, fascinators, colorful socks, toys, etc. This will be a stop for me around the holidays from now on for family gifts. In a word, eclectic. In four words, mostly decent quality eclecticism. I bought a wonderful children's book for a friend, some clever coasters for other friends, a good yet stylish sweater for my daughter, and a few other things. (Obviously, it's great for gifts). Though I do think that a pot for plants and accompanying dish towel for the kitchen got regifted, possibly as part of a white elephant. Ah well, no one is perfect. It has some good cookbooks, some interesting t-shirts, and some very sweet stationery. Lots of parking. Great set-up too- you kind of wander from area to area. read more

Definitely one of my new favorite shops! If you're looking for the perfect present or souvenir from Louisville, this is where you'll find it! I wasn't able to get my butt in here the last time I visited the city, so I made it a point to pop in this past week. As a former "shop girl" and visual merchandiser, the products and displays here are unique and one of a kind. Whoever the buyer is needs to keep doing what they're doing! From books, puzzles, greeting cards, toys and games... to candles, jewelry, clothing, art, and home decor... everything feels special, and I honestly can't imagine anyone leaving this store empty-handed! Do give yourself time to wander around, as this place is large and full of treasures from floor to ceiling! Everything was very clean, fully-stocked, and well-organized. If you need any assistance, the lovely ladies who work here are happy, delightful, and informative! My husband and I took a bit too long while shopping, and didn't realize they had closed! We apologized, but they were so accommodating and let me continue to look around despite the doors being locked! I ended up finding some really cool sunglasses (2 for $20!), a beautiful framed print by a local artist, a stoneware coffee mug, some handmade Kentucky bourbon balls, a puzzle, and a handful of funny BlueQ bubblegum packs. Looks like I haven't updated my review of Work the Metal since 2019, which was EONS ago (or at least it feels like that). So I've got to get on that! WTM continues to be one of my favorite shops in Louisville. It's a must for me each holiday season because I know that I will be able to find *something* for everyone I have left on my list. It also doesn't hurt that it seems to expand to take over more space within Butchertown Market between each of my visits. On my most recent visit I picked up some child's toys and books, a lotion set from Moss Hill (located inside WTM), spice tins from Bourbon Barrel Foods, costume jewelry and some Christmas ornaments. Its offerings range from the kitsch-y to the sincere. You can find something for your potty-mouthed BFF along with your prim-and-proper MIL. I also tend to shop at WTM for wedding gifts. Their fleur de lis serving ware has landed in more than a few of my loved ones' dining rooms. WTM will wrap your items in their signature teal boxes. I've bought from WFM so much that my family gets excited when they see a teal box under the tree. And the staff, even when facing large crowds during the holidays, has always been friendly and efficient. WTM is really the real deal. So thankful to have them in Lou. read more

Work the metal is in the Butchertown Market. There are some very unique items. I enjoyed laughing at the names for the bathroom sprays. They have a wall of socks (my husband loves fun socks). There are all kind of knick knacks here. I especially enjoyed the accessory area. Lots of beautiful jewelry and purses. The staff was extremely helpful. They provide gift boxes free of charge and this beautiful sea blueish color. Nice place to find some accessories. read more

This is a must stop shop for the holidays! The staff was incredibly friendly, and they take covid precautions seriously here. Because they are limiting capacity, I had to wait in a short line to enter the shop. A staff member made sure line moved quickly and efficiently, and everyone was wearing masks and social distancing. Work the Metal was definitely worth the wait! Did I mention free gift wrapping? Their gift wrapping is beautiful with truly unique tissue paper. Mine had Santa doing yoga! Every corner you turn has unique gifts. They have something for everyone from different themed trees that you can buy ornaments off of, to all the whiskey accessories you could need, to the best selection of children's books I've ever seen. They even have a small chocolate shop and body care shop inside! The cherry on top was how friendly the staff was and how well they take care of the customers. It's rare to find such good gift wrapping as they do here, let alone for free! While I was checking out, I was even asked how my experience was by a gentleman. He really cared that I was enjoying my shopping trip. They even have multiple registers to help speed up the check out process. Work the Metal is my favorite local shop in Louisville. Period. You can find just about anything here, and awesome things that you didn't even know existed. From home decor, clothing, knick knacks, children's toys, to foods/kitchenware, Work the Metal wins. It is such a perfect place to find gifts, or to show a tourist what Louisville is all about. I am assuming that's the case for several people because it's more than doubled its size since I first discovered it in Butchertown, absorbing other shops' space as they left the building. This is a fantastic spot for treating yourself or looking for fun, unique gifts. You're going to find a variety of items at Work the Metal. While they do have sections for mens and kids, the majority of the items appeal to ladies. Highlights include: home decor (LOTS), jewelry, clothing, mugs / glasses, bourbon inspired decor and cooking items, pictures / signs, candles, books, furniture, etc. I love everything about it, including the inappropriately packaged gum at the counter. Inside you're also going to find Cellar Door Chocolates, Moss Hill & the Macaroon Bar. Buying a gift? The staff is great about wrapping up the item(s) for you. I have been to several girls nights out events here lately and let me tell you- it is fabulous. I did most of my Christmas shopping at an event in late November. I just went to Galentines Day this past weekend and had great wine, a healthy snack and did some shopping for myself. This is a great place to go if you're looking to buy a gift for someone (or yourself). There are a number of locally made items, but also locally-themed items (like fleur de lis or Louisville items). During the holidays, they have holiday items as well; my mom got a great wall (not to be confused with the Great Wall) hanging there last year. They also have many trendy items, like bubble necklaces, and a limited selection of cute clothing (females only, I believe, though there are items for males in the store, for sure). They also have items at a variety of price points, something I always appreciate. To make it even better, the store has continued to expand in the building as other places inside it have closed. It can be a little tricky to know when you've left one business and entered the next. All, however, are totally worth a browse but Work the Metal tops the list. This place is packed with goodies. Toys, wall art, lamps, trinkets, towels, cookware, magnets, clocks, jewelry, glassware, mugs, hilarious coasters, wedding gifts, key chains, boxer briefs, wine cases....so much stuff. Cute stuff, sarcastic gifts, weird collectibles, and classy houseware items. All in one spot. Its fun to browse and take your time. Most of what I saw was priced well...not overpriced like what I expected. The only thing that seemed too pricey were the smallish $32.00 candles and some of the toys. I did wish they had a pet section...I think they would make it great if they did!
