Cheap, simple tavern with a nice cheeseburger. Good onion rings too. The burger is the thin, smashed, crispy, fried-in-its-own-fat style that I love. Just wish it was cooked a little less, as it's almost all crunch and little juice. Nothing is spectacular, but it's an above-average burger for less than you'd spend anywhere not fast-food. Hi, my brother and I stopped by on Saturday to try their double cheeseburger and chili. We thought both were terrific!! Simple, but very tasty food. The meatiest chili we can ever recall having. The hamburgers were well cooked and tasty. The server was very courteous and friendly. Doesn't look like much on the outside, but what a surprise when you enter. By the amount of people we saw coming in to eat, they must also feel the way we do. Will be back when we're in Indianapolis. read more

I agree with Parker-- this place is just cool. It's an Indy staple and provides a nice counterpoint to places like Traders' Point Creamery. I tried Workingman's last summer when I did a burger tour and ended up going back two or three times. They serve basic burgers in an old-fashioned, no-nonsense sort of way. I liked the fries, (fairly big but not huge, soft on the inside), but I'm not sure I'm a fan of Indiana's own Rold Gold ketchup. A twist from the past I kind of enjoyed was that if you ask for a Coke, they give you one. In a can. With a tiny glass alongside. It struck me as kind of European, maybe, but the good thing was I didn't just gulp it down-- I drank enough for a taste, which is, I guess, how Coke intended it in the first place. the food was great.. I drove 2 1/2 hours to get the best hamburger in Indiana. it was a great hamburger. If I am in the area I will go again. the problem is CASH only and you have to be 21 years old to go inside.. these place is a bar that sells food. the other sites that came up online say resteraunt. only one site had the word TAVERN. I had to have my minor child wait with my wife outside with the other couple with their 17 year old son while we ordered take out. read more

Last time I will ever eat there. Hamburgers are good, but the light, long hair, RUDE waitress will eventually make that restaurant lose a lot of business. Ordered the mushrooms for the first time and they were absolutely gross! Mushrooms weren't done on the inside and after cutting one open with a knife, it smelled spoiled. Set those to the side, thinking she would ask if there was a problem. NO!!! When she brought the check, I said the mushrooms weren't done on the inside, her response was, you should had said something, I would had refired them. REALLY? Isn't that a health code violation? I almost said, you never came back to the table, in order for me to say something. Took them away and didn't take them off of my check. Not the first time she has been rude to people. LAST TIME FOR US!!!!!! I'm not going to argue over 4.00, but my family, friends, co-workers and everyone who reads yelp, will hear my story. read more

I've never had a burger like the one I ate at this place. Excellent! Burger patties pressed incredibly thin and cooked until well-done and crispy. They are known for the double cheeseburger and that is what you should order; though the grilled cheese is good as well. Beers come in three sizes: 10 oz., 16 oz., and a ridiculous 32 oz. This classic diner/bar is one of my favorite lunch spots in Indy. Their burgers are the best ever, consistently! They are thin and crispy with all of the right stuff to compliment the goodness, onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato, etc. Pair that burger with a cup of white bean soup, chili, fries or onion rings (which are also the best I have ever had!) and you will have the perfect lunch and may not have to eat dinner. read more

I decided to try out workingman's friend tavern for lunch after reading about it in the Indianapolis monthly. I tried the double cheeseburger which was flat like steak n shake but better. This is a diner that I will definitely try again. Next time I will be getting the onion rings. read more

This is an average burger at an average price with average service. They don't have unlimited soft drinks (you buy a can of soda) or milkshakes, but they have plenty of beer. I'm not impressed with this place, but it is an average burger, so it gets an average score. read more

Best cheeseburger in Indy...and possibly anywhere!!! The service is very good. Most of the staff has been there a long time. The place can be very busy at lunch as many people make the short trek from downtown Indy to partake. It's we'll worth it at anytime. read more

Great Burger, but your valuables are not safe in your car. Don't stop by with anything of value left in your car during the lunch hour during broad daylight. The owners weren't real sympathetic and said they'd like to put up some cameras but they "really wouldn't do much. You can't really see anybody with them." I've dined there for years, but I wont return and will not run the risk of going there anymore. On balance the burger wasn't worth the police report, insurance claim and bad feeling I had when left the place. read more

My husband and I will go downtown, and out of our way, just to get one of their tasty double cheeseburgers. By far, the best burger in town. I like the way they grill their burgers getting it a little crispy around the outside edges without drying it out. Very juicy and extremely good. read more

Been to this dive many times. The establishment is truly in the working class neighborhood and has all of the elements true to its name. The building is right by the railroad tracks on the westside of Indy. Parking is a gravel lot with telephone poles laying on their side to keep you from hitting the building. You walk into the place and you see a jukebox, a long bar, many old dumpy tables and a sparse paint job. Lunch time is their prime time...so get there early. Many State govt workers, IUPUI and hospital staff as well as many blue collar workers rub elbows together. Several things before you order...the wait staff is RUDE...always have.. always will be. Bring cash....they don't do credit or debit. Don't go to the bathroom there...its a dumpster fire..wait until you get back to the office. There are no hand-out menu's...its on the board posted above the bar. Spelling ignored. lol If it's your first time there..order the double cheeseburger and sour cream fries. period. If you like Americana Dives...then try other things "if offered". Tenderloin, Chili, and believe it or not braunschweiger sandwich. Yes.... I said it. Around St. Patricks Day...if you get there early...corned beef and cabbage is decent..but not great. Overall...the double cheeseburger is good...not great. It's got no other added ingredients than a normal dc.. It's thin crispy patties, piled up with cheese and whatever you want to add. That's it. What keep's people coming back (me included)..is the simpleness of the food, the easiness of the location, the atmosphere of being an ultimate "dive". Plus, I like going to mom and pop joints rather than chains. Take the cheeseburger out of this place and put it into a Steak n Shake...you wouldn't know the difference. A big "fishbowl" stein of draft beer at the workingman's friend makes everything taste and feel better. Also, helps with the rude wait staff. read more

Other than that, the food is so freakin' good! I had a reuben on St Patrick's day because I thought I'd try something different than the burger that i usually get. I was not disappointed at all.
