My wife has a gluten allergy, which makes eating at football stadiums challenging. So when we booked tickets for Billy Joel, she got to work finding a place with a GF or GS menu that was close to Lucas Oil Stadium. Tavern on South fit that need, and by far exceeded our expectations. When we arrived at 5pm, the place was slammed with a two hour wait. Luckily, we made a reservation, so we got a table right away. Despite the huge crowd, service was fantastic and our server was very attentive. The beer list had some good local options at reasonable prices. The wings were smoked very well and the lemon pepper was a nice flavor. The chicken tacos were nothing special, but it was substantial amount of food for the price and the chips were great. Despite the crowd, we were in and out in 75 minutes. We gave our server a good tip for being so responsive. Would I recommend this for a Thursday romantic date night? Probably not. But, for a spot with reasonably priced food and drinks before or after a game or concert at a stadium, I don't think you could do much better. The atmosphere was also very enjoyable. My wife said women were singing Billy Joel songs in the bathroom. For all these reasons, I think Tavern on South is 5 star worthy. If I ever go to a Colts game, this will be a must-stop. read more

This place is terrible. We went before the Garth Brooks concert on 8-21-2026. Placed reservations 2 weeks prior. We were seated upstairs, downstairs and upstairs was very minimal people. Waited 20 minutes just for drinks. Then a waiter and waitress got into an argument at our table. We heard it all! They were arguing over tips! Then We were provided a "event menu" which was minimal compared to the "regular menu" . The food was expensive, small portions, Luke warm from sitting under a heat lamp. The worst! I can not say enough bad things about this place. I called 6 weeks prior to the night we wanted to dine. We had a big group (15 ppl) in town from a conference and we all live out of state. I mentioned this when I called and talked to the manager, Carl. This is when Carl should have told me that there was a pre-season Colts game on the day that I wanted the reservation. He did not. I called a week prior to my reservation and asked the person who answered the phone (not Carl) if I could pre-order appetizers so my group would have some food on the table when they arrived. She said "sure" and told me to call back a couple of hours prior to the reservation. On the day of the reservation I called at 5pm and the person who answered the phone said that I would have to talk to the manager (Carl). There was a lot of noise in the back ground (the Colts game was 1-4pm). Carl came on and practically laughed when I asked about pre-ordering appetizers. He must have said the words "game day" at least 5 times. Things like....."it's game day, you can't do that" and "it's game day and I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to get you seated at your reservation time of 7pm". I was very nervous that the 15 of us would not get seated so I showed up early. Carl was standing at the front door trying to look like a bouncer (but at the time I did not know it was Carl). I walked in and the place was empty. The only ppl in there were ppl that worked there and they were all talking to each other and didn't care that I was standing there. I eventually was shown to our table and 2 wait staff came over and told me that they would be our staff for the evening. I looked at the menu and was horrified. Because it was "game day", the menu was 1/2 as big as the original menu. My group likes choices and this was not going to cut it. None of the "good stuff" was on the menu....steak, etc. I did notice that the cheesesteak that is normally $19 was $26. Lovely. I ordered a few appetizers and asked them to bring over their coctail/drink menu. I was told that they don't have one but can make ANYTHING. They can't. My group arrived and I apologized profusely. My friend asked the waitress what kinds of wine they had and she said.....red and white. Thanks, helpful. She got white in a plastic dixie cup. 3 other ppl ordered mixed drinks and had to send them back numerous times. The restaurant never got it right so they switched to beer. I had given the waitress our tax exempt paperwork that was being used at the hotel and the fancy steak house that the Board of Directors was eating at. She came over and said that the manager wanted to see me. In hindsight, I'm pretty pissed w/myself for going over to him....he should have come to me. Here is where Carl really made me hate him. He said, "I don't even know what this is. We can't accept it." I just grabbed it out of his hand and walked away. The appetizers were terrible. The flatbread tasted similar to the pizza we got on Fridays in elementary school and the wings were supposed to come w/bleu cheese/ranch and didn't. To be fair, the actual meals were not bad, even though I did not get what I ordered. With 15 ppl, we racked up a good sized bill and get this......they don't absorb the 3% credit card processing fee. This horrible place passes it on to their customers. They missed the memo that it's a standard cost of doing business rather than passing a direct 3% surcharge onto the customer. I do not recommend getting the Caesar salad with chicken, parts of the chicken were over cooked and the value didn't seem to be there for what you get. In fact, I would say value wasn't there for a few things. For example, my wife paid for a side ($3) for broccoli to go with her salmon and she only got three pieces... the salmon with no sides is $24 and it's like a 4.5 inch square. One thing that made me cringe was at one point a male host with multicolored hair walked into the restroom on his phone (on speaker), went to the urinal, and walked out without washing his hands. Made reservations ahead of time and arrived only to be told they "weren't taking reservations," even though ours had been accepted. After waiting, we were eventually seated in a back room where there was nobody else dining...yet nearly every table around us was still dirty the entire time. Service was a complete disaster. It took about an hour just to receive half of our drinks, and after waiting another 30+ minutes, we still never received any food at all. At that point we paid for the drinks we actually got and left. The most frustrating part was that the restaurant was not busy, so there really was no explanation for the lack of service or communication. I've been to tavern on south a few times now and I have enjoyed it every time. We were seated pretty quickly even without a reservation. Recently when I went, I ordered the chicken sandwich which was pretty good. We stopped in for dinner and drinks here when I arrived in Indianapolis. There is free parking on the side of the building and the decor inside is quite nice. There is also a balcony on the second floor, but it was closed for the evening. Our server was Sean and he did an outstanding job! (The service from the kitchen was a little slow and that was surprising given there were not many people in the place at 8pm. We did the taco salad and the soft tacos. Sean recommended the seasoned pulled chicken over the seasoned chipotle chicken and he was spot on. It was very tasty! I had a cosmo, but I didn't order a second one. It was too sweet for my taste. We decided to all go out for lunch to this location since it was quiet during the summer hours. We were seated quickly which was awesome because we had a decent sized group. The menu has a variety of choices which is always nice in my opinion. I decided to go with the 7 field salad, which was a great combo of spinach, goat cheese, cranberry, cherries, spiced nuts, with a raspberry vinaigrette and I added some grilled salmon on top for protein. I had dinner here recently and really enjoyed it. I was by myself so I had one of the smaller tables in the bar area. The two bartenders were very attentive and refilled my water often. I started with the 7 Field Salad: mixed greens, dried cherries, spiced nuts, carrot, red onion (I held this), goat cheese and cranberry vinaigrette. This was a really tasty salad. Loved all the toppings. Nice tart dressing. For my entrée, I had the Fish & chips: crispy fried whitefish, lime dill tarter sauce, french fries, cole slaw, grilled lemon. This was my first time here. We sat out on the upstairs patio. It was a really cool ambiance for our party of four. The appetizers were really delicious. First trip here was for burger week, but sadly we won't return. The biggest pro is that there is a small parking lot while dining. Once we placed our order, we were informed they were out of the liquor they were promoting, so ordered another. We still ordered the burger week burger, which then came out medium. We asked about the cooking temp, and were informed all burgers are made that way regardless of asking. We were not offered another burger or anything else, even though we did not eat the burger served. Our party was seated exclusively upstairs and with its own bar which was a fantastic experience. I love the ability to mingle over cocktails and even switch tables to speak with others, which is tough to do at other restaurant set-ups. Our bartenders were top notch. Friendly, attentive and fast with drinks. They also worked hard to bring food out for the buffet. Food was average and the chicken marsala was a big miss with most of our team due to the sauce. Since we'd been eating hotel buffets for 3 days, I was looking forward to dinner here but the buffet felt like more of the same. I'm sure if we'd been able to order off the menu that the experience would have been a step up. Tavern on South is close to several hotels and Lucas Oil Stadium. Tavern on South is THE spot to go before Colts and Indy Eleven games. We called on a Saturday afternoon and they let us make a reservation for six for that evening - we were in luck! I'd give it at least an hour and a half to have dinner here. We ordered soft pretzels, cheeseburgers and fries, rigatoni and chicken milanese. The soft pretzels were scrumptious and came with marinara and jalepeno queso fresco - yum! The cheeseburgers were pretty good, but none of us liked the chicken milanese so much. It was too big and we were slightly confused by the French-toast-like breading. However, I LOVED the rigatoni with chicken - it was delicious and we all decided that's what we'd order if we came back. I think the grilled chicken sandwich and pizzas sounded delicious as well. My favorite part about Tavern on South is the second-floor massive outdoor porch. It's a blast when it's warm out and accommodates a lot of people. The breaded cauliflower was right out of the freezer, and there was some potato chips that I guess were okay. The only decent appetizer was the pretzel, which was actually pretty good! For my entree, I ordered the ribeye tips, which the server said people raved about. I received a plate full of meat scraps! Some were well done, some were rare some were medium. Some were tender, some were tough, some were fatty! It really seemed like I just got all the pieces of meat that were discards, cooked, and served on a plate covered with some sauce. Would eat lunch here fairly often before Covid. Food is better than just typical bar food. Today stopped in after ballgame. They have two floors and an outdoor patio on second floor. There's usually parking avl in their lot, but if not, there's a garage nearby. I've always been able to have a conversation, so noise has not been a problem. In past, I've had sea bass sandwich for lunch, amazing; not sure it's still on menu. This visit I had a mango cart beer and crab cakes. I really enjoyed the beer. The cakes had real crab as I got the occasional shell but I prefer more lumps of crab. My friend told me I was just spoiled from Maryland blue crab cakes. This is a popular lunch place so make sure to make a reservation. The only reason I am not giving five stars is because the service was good, but not great. No one was in the lobby when we arrived at about 12:15, though there was lunch noise from dinners upstairs. 5 minutes into our wait, we were greeted and seated. Our waiter was rushed and didn't seem all that interested in even taking our order, definitely no rapport there. My colleagues reported good meals.... chicken tacos, a cheeseburger, and a taxi salad all got good reviews. My Caesar salad....I requested dressing on the side. Oops, didn't happen. The salmon seemed undercooked on the meatier part of the portion, and I'm not certain it was blackened. The salad itself was tasty and I could eat about half the salmon. My colleague and I enjoyed our visit here. We were in Indy on business and stayed at a hotel near Lucas Oil Stadiu. That made this establishment rather convenient as a place for dinner. The storefront was inviting with a slightly vintage feel. The decor was likewise rather comfortable with a decent amount of seating. There was a full bar with a contiguous dining area. We went in on a Tuesday night so it was not crowded. Our server, Steve, attended to us right away and did a good job taking care of us. The menu featured the American tavern-style fare one would expect. We both started with tomato basil soup, which turned out to be a good opener. For my main, I tried the blackened whitefish and was quite happy with it. My colleague tried the Pasta Giordano and had good comments about it. She also sampled the Creme Broulee for dessert. I had a bite and agreed with her that it was nicely done. The final bill with food, drinks, tax and tip was $106. At $53 per person, it was not cheap but I thought the quality of the experience was worth it. As such, I would be happy to try this place again.
