One of the more friendly neighborhood mechanic shops I've found. In my opinion, they are trustworthy and good to work with. A few years back, struggling massively to find someone to do a required MO Car Inspection, they really stepped up and helped out even though they were booked. More recently, my wife's car was pulling really badly and we thought it would be more than an alignment, maybe an axle or worse. Nope, just an alignment ($100) and much-needed new tires. While their tire quote was a bit higher than say, a big box store, I wanted to go with them for a few reasons. One, they're local and had been very helpful. Two, like many things these days, there was a shortage of tires due to shipping issues and whatnot, so why not knock it out? They also have done a nice, thorough job of looking over other potential car issues without being pushy at all, just as a diagnostic and heads up. One more big thing that makes this a natural spot for me: It's along the Trolley Trail, right by a city bike rental stand. Got more than an hour to kill? Ride to Waldo or Brookside for a cup of coffee. For me, I can even take it home and don't have to coordinate a ride to/from. Good spot overall that I recommend. It might be a few percentage points pricier than some I've been to, but worth it for all the reasons mentioned above. read more

Went in for a valve cover gasket replacement.. originally quoted 325 to 350.. had a diagnostic run.. 90$.. gave me the codes.. said my motor was covered in oil.. another 140$ to clean it.. asked if they would do the top as well.. not done.. said I needed dye injection in my motor.. another 100$.. diagnosed was useless as there was no coolant in my car.. final bill? 640$ for a basic valve cover install and motor (semi) cleaning.. totally ripped off read more

I was recommended this shop because London Automotive could not get to my car for a while. I should have waited. I brought my Rav-4 in and after a few days they finally were able to tell me it was my head gasket. After pulling apart my engine they said they needed to send it to a machine shop be because it was warped. After three weeks of having my car I asked about when I could expect it to be finished and of course I would have to wait another week because Thanksgiving was coming and they didn't work over the holiday. They had my car almost 5 weeks and after $7000 later I finally got my car. I went in to pick it up and was told for the first time they don't take checks. Scott told me, "who writes checks anymore?" Well, I do and that was so uncalled for she disrespectful. I had to pick my car up the next day because of this. So fast forward April and my car was not accelerating. I took it to them, again thinking it was still the same issue. I told Scott what the issue was and he set an appointment for me and when I brought it in he said the person that worked on my car was out on bereavement and wouldn't be back for a week. He also didn't believe what I told him was wrong over the phone because there was no engine light on. Now, as I brought it in there was a light on and he said,"oh it is acting up then?" What? He called me the next week and said they did a few diagnostic tests and still can't figure it out and I already owe like $900 and I would have to pay for it out of my pocket. Eventually, they figured out it was the catalytic converter which is right under the head gasket. I feel they should have fixed that as a part of the head gasket but another $2300 later. Scott called me and said the catalytic converter was on back order and it would be ready in September or October. It's now May. He said, "that's why I have three cars. Are you kidding me? Who has three cars just in case one car is not working? I will never go back there again and actually traded my car in for a new one. $900 in diagnostics alone. Obviously they have no ideas what they are doing. Save yourself time and money don't go there. read more

Beware: Wornall Automotive - Incorrect Diagnosis & Poor Customer Service I want to share my recent experience with Wornall Automotive so others can make an informed decision. I brought my car in for diagnosis and was told I had a faulty thermostat. They charged me $200 for this diagnosis. However, when I tested the thermostat myself at home (standard boiling water test), it opened correctly - meaning the part was functioning properly and their diagnosis was wrong. When I called to discuss this with the manager and provided the facts about my test results, instead of acknowledging the possibility of an error, he became defensive and accused me of not installing the thermostat correctly. This was irrelevant to the issue - I had tested the standalone part and proven it was working as it should. The diagnostic work I paid for was simply incorrect. When I asked them to make it right, I was told it would be 2 weeks before they could look at it again. Only after I pushed back firmly did that timeline suddenly become 2 days. The manager was condescending throughout the conversation and showed no willingness to take responsibility for the faulty diagnosis or work with me to resolve the situation in good faith. I've lost confidence in their work and am taking my vehicle to another shop. I paid $200 for an incorrect diagnosis and wasted nearly a week, only to be treated dismissively when I presented evidence of their error. Bottom line: If you value accurate diagnostics and customer service that takes accountability, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Hit a curb with left front tire. Wornall Automotive said the left and right front bushings were shot and that the tires could not be aligned without new bushings, that rear lateral link arms, front and rear suspension struts and two tires all needed to be replaced. Estimated cost $4,000.00. I took the car to another repair place. They estimated $675 and repaired it for that amount. The only problem was one bent strut. My car now drives perfectly. read more

They have helped maintain my 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis in splendid running order, and are very straightforward in their dealings with me about what needs doing without adding unnecessary and possibly expensive procedures which aren't necessary. I have been going to Wornall Automotive the last few times my poor, aging but awesome Toyota started needing the typical maintenance that any car over 100K miles is going to need. I originally ended up there out of convenience of location. But after having such good customer experiences each & every time, I have returned for follow up maintenance (for example today when my check engine light came on, & the car started puttering at a stoplight). And I plan to utilize their services again in the future, as needed. The staff is very polite, knowledgeable, and extremely well versed in COMMUNICATING to the customer what might be needed, what they have diagnosed, as well as long term potential needs for your vehicle. Services that they offer, which are appealing to ME personally are the option to be picked up/dropped off, a night drop off key option, and a very helpful website. They keep very detailed records of their service on your vehicle (which I actually have had issues with at other places in town). And again, I have to stress HOW nice & helpful every single person I have dealt with thus far has been. Specifically this most recent visit, I spoke with both Gary & Mark. They both managed to break everything down to me in MY language (which sometimes can be difficult because I ask many questions). read more

I brought my Subaru outback to Wornall Automotive with a starting issue. Based on my experience, it seemed to be an issue with the antitheft system, which I conveyed to them. They insisted on doing a full diagnosis and reported back to me that it was not the antitheft system that I actually needed a new starter and wanted to charge me around $650 total. This was more than I could afford, so I declined their service. They charged me $156 for the diagnosis, which I paid. I then hired a mobile mechanic, bought a starter and had my car towed to another lot. While waiting for the mobile mechanic to arrive, I turned the ignition and the car started just fine. My theory that it was the antitheft system proved to be correct and I did not need a starter. Either they were trying to rip me off or they were grossly incompetent and/or lazy. read more

They gave me a quote over the phone over twice that of any other pace in town. When I told the guy I wasn't good with that and tried to get off the phone he was rather rude and asked me " Are you just looking for the cheapest repair in town or do you want quality work?" and "Our mechanics are certified with blah blah...." He was doing a hard pressed sales pitch at me and I really didn't need that. He quoted 1400$, I got it done for 340$ at a reputable shop in town. I did get a good deal but I could have gotten it done for 600$ at another place also. I just don't like to be talked down to and pressured. read more

I have been meaning to write this review for some time. I am a new resident of Brookside, and to Kansas City. I found myself in need of a new pair of brake pads. I shopped around a bit online before I came upon Wornall automotive. The gentleman sounded honest enough on the phone and I decided to give them a try. Dropping the car off was a breeze. They advised they would call me once they were able to take a look. Fast forward a few hours and I received a call from the gentleman I spoke to at drop off. He advised that in addition to new pads, I needed a new set of rotors because the current ones could not be turned. He went on for a few minutes and finally got to the $500 quote. I was shocked because the rotors he was referring to were less than 2 years old. I started digging in and asking specific questions (what was micrometer reading, what is cutoff?, etc). His answers made no sense so I kept pressing. Eventually It came to pass that he was full of it. He asked to put me on hold and said he had to check with the mechanic. 3 minutes later he comes back to me and voila.... He can turn the rotors just for me. So long story short if I had not dug into his story I would have been out an additional $200. Buyer beware they are salesman and really press you on services/parts you don't need. The sleazy sales pitch I received raised red flags and after the rotor story didn't checkout my suspicions were confirmed. I did end up paying them to do the brakepads but will not go back. In all fairness they did a good job on the pads. Price was $275, a bit too much but I am used to Los Angeles prices which are much cheaper. read more

Mark and all the folks here are the best. They are no where near our house and yet this is our car repair place. They keep great records of our cars and send us reminders when a service is due. Best thing is they never 'sell' us. I have never once felt like they were trying to trick me into something I did not need. Mark is as nice as they come. In the car world, that is impossible to find. I have been meaning to write this for a while, and this happened about 2 years ago and still bothers me. I had taken my car to a Jiffy Lube for an oil change, and they informed me my dip stick tube was broken. So I searched around and saw some positive reviews for Wornall Auto and called. They seemed nice enough on the phone and dropping the car off was simple enough. Got a call from them a few hours later telling me just how complex the whole process was going to be bc they couldn't figure out how to get to the base of the dip stick (where it was broken off). They said they were going to have to take the base plate off, and start dissecting the engine to get to the dip stick base for removal and was going to cost $1200. I told them I will take it somewhere else for a second opinion. When I got there, it was parked outside and now would not start (I knew I was low on gas and it was parked on a slight hill, which was what I mentioned when it wouldn't turn over) they said they'd pull it in and take a look. Next thing I knew they told me the starter was bad and needed replacing for another $700 (not to mention a giant list of other items that needed addressing "right away" total invoice amount for all repairs was $$2900). I told them to not touch my car any further and move it back outside so I could tow it somewhere else. When towed elsewhere, started right up on a flat surface (as I suspected), and they were able to replace the dip stick tube for ~$80 without taking any extreme measures with the plate, etc. Long story short - these guys seemingly have no idea what they are doing and will try to take you for all they can. I recently had some work done here and really appreciated how the people kept me informed throughout the repair process. Once the job was complete I even received follow up calls making sure everything was still running smoothly. A couple months later I ran into some more car trouble after moving to St. Louis. They did a good job on my daughters car and were very good with communication however once I brought my BMW to be looked at (which was running great by the way, just wanted to check it out for service) you would have thought I was deaf, dumb, and blind, holding a giant bag of money. They attempted to hustle me big time. I took my car a few blocks over to Doug's Foreign Motorwerks and got a completely different, a much more reasonable and affordable reception. Warning Warning Warning... Stay away from this place. They will perform work that is not needed. I paid to have my car towed away from this sordid establishment. It was worth my $90 to save the extra $700 that they wanted for unneeded work. Unfortunately I even had to pay off Wornall to release my car to the tow truck as they would not release it until I paid them for the garbage information about all the things they had to do to fix it.... I proved them wrong and save $700 by towing it away. Yes, I spent an extra $150+ to keep their unscrupulous hands off my vehicle....and yes, it was worth it. You've been warned. - M.E.
