We made a reservation at Wren for 6:30. We arrived at about 6:20 ordered a drink from the bar and then were seated promptly at 6:30. My husband and I don't eat out often so when we do we like to take our time and enjoy our date night. The food was excellent. Portions were generous and the atmosphere of the restaurant was great. Overall it was a fantastic experience right up until the end. I ordered a second drink while eating my entree and was still sipping on it after finishing my meal. At 7:45 while my husband and I were having a conversation, the hostess came up to our table and asked us to leave because they had another reservation waiting. We had only been sitting at the table for an hour and 15 minutes. I still had some of my drink and we were considering ordering dessert but we were never asked. I have never been asked to leave a restaurant before and it left a really bad taste in my mouth and makes me not want to return. I'm still stunned that this happened. read more

Post Covid Wrens is a shadow of it's former self. No table cloths and no attempt at creating any ambiance. The menu is extremely limited and the prices for what you get are outlandish - $15 - $20 for lunch. (You'll go over $20 for lunch with just tax and tip, not including a drink.) Had their famous chicken salad. It's a scoop of chicken salad, day old baguette, a few wilted leaves of arugula, and a cup of fruit past it's prime - for $15. In all honesty, I would have put more effort out assembling a plate of leftovers for my husband. Service was perfunctory at best. Server seemed tired and a little annoyed to have to wait on us even though it was her first hour on the job. Off day at Wren Today: The hostess sneered when we responded no to having lunch reservations. She then pointed to a table near a drafty door and would not move us to another table. Our waiter disappeared and we found he was also tending bar to a full bar. When he came to take our order he ask me if I was having a bad day. He took our order but we left after 20 minutes and our order had not arrived. Have had great service and food at Wren on other occasions. The restaurant was understaffed and no Management oversight. On a visit to Beaufort we were looking for a place to have lunch and after reading reviews and checking it out we decided on Wren. A good choice. Wren is located in an older building with brick walls and an open space. There are also some tables in a garden area. Service was prompt and very helpful. We ordered a cup of shellfish chowder and a cup of tomato bisque. Both were very flavorful. We opted to split an order of chicken salad after noting the large portions that other diners were eating. There is a $3 charge for that, but no matter as it alleviates the messiness of having to do that on a small table with limited utensils! The chicken salad was really good with just the right amount of seasonings and was served with fresh baked whole grain bread. There were a number of people having lunch here which tells me it's quite popular. I can see why. The food is terrific! read more

My whole party loved this new (for us) spot! We went for dinner and easily snagged a reservation on OpenTable. Their cocktail list was fun to choose from and everyone enjoyed their drinks. Our waitress, Paula, was very friendly and attentive. She broke down her top 5 entrees for us. A crusty, sliced French loaf was brought over with an herbed butter/cream cheese spread. It had a lot of garlic powder in it, but we love garlic. The fried green tomato appetizer was amazing! Several of us got the mahi and shrimp with a grit cake. The mahi was a tad on the dry side and I wished my grit cake had a little more salt or some flavoring. But overall the cream sauce and perfectly cooked shrimp made up for it. Others had the meatloaf, lobster bisque, flounder, and southern salad with blackened shrimp. Everyone raved about the food and atmosphere. Wren is going on our short list of restaurants to visit next time we are back in town! Ask for Paula- she is the best! read more

Cool little spot in Beaufort. A mix of rustic and industrial charm on the inside...would be a good spot for drinks at night. Our group was there for lunch and the opinions were mixed. My meal alone would have been four stars (fried chicken sandwich and seafood chowda'), but my fiance had a grilled cheese sandwich that looked meh and tasted subpar. They also had run out of pimento cheese for the grilled cheese sandwich, which is like unheard of in the South (or so I thought) and probably had an adverse effect on how it was meant to taste. Anyways I enjoyed the atmosphere and would recommend Wren for a drink or laid back meal if you are ever in Beaufort. read more

We had a wonderful experience celebrating our wedding anniversary at Wren! We seamlessly made the reservation on OpenTable. Our 4 year old joined us - we were not sure if the restaurant was kid friendly but they were so sweet and accommodating. They offered a high chair and surprisingly had kid friendly meal options (macaroni and cheese, chicken fingers/french fries). The portions for all of our meals were large and everything was yummy. My family had dinner here tonight. My husband had salmon, my mom had the chicken and I had the Drunken Shrimp. My moms chicken dish was by far the best. The mash potatoes were delicious and the topping on the chicken had a great flavor. The salmon with asparagus dish was heavy cream risotto, very rich if you like that. Most of the items on the menu are well-priced although I had a difficult time reconciling a $10 hot dog (toppings cost extra) and $18 fish/chips in my head and I instead ordered the croque-monsieur for lunch. Excellent sandwich. Maybe I should give the hot dog or the fish and chips a try. The wife ordered a chicken salad sandwich which she enjoyed and I tried. I'm not a fan of cranberries, but it works in that sandwich. Inlaws (who are regular customers) ordered Reuben, chicken salad and the seafood chowder. All good. My family usually eats at Saltus, which has always been fantastic, but this year we wanted to switch it up. We originally had reservations at Breakwater, but were told to check out Wren Bistro. We showed up a half hour early for our reserved time and were seated immediately, as our table was already set. We ordered heavy apps, two orders of tacos one fish and one beef, fried green tomatoes, and calamari. All were fantastic. My mother ordered the shrimp and grits, which everyone makes down here and these truly were fantastic, as another review said "the perfect mixture of shrimp, bacon, and grits." My sister ordered the red snapper, and my other sister ordered a seafood pasta. Myself and my stepfather had the frogmore stew, which was incredible. The broth at the end was perfect for dipping the delicious bread, not to mention he phenomenal herbed butter brought along with it. Most importantly, our server, Brittany, was incredible. I have a very lively and over the top family and Brittany took us with stride. A true sweetheart and a magnificent server. Everything came out perfectly and we will definitely be back next year. This restaurant is simply amazing! The atmosphere is awesome, servers are very helpful, and management is very attentive! I called ahead to see if they had any vegan options and they accommodated me so nicely! When I arrived everyone was very friendly and so nice. We really enjoyed our experience at this restaurant as they made me something off the menu, a stuffed pepper with black bean and corn salsa with spinach with a side of green beans sautéed with mushrooms and roasted red peppers! We have been twice and food, service and drinks have been excellent both times. If you like burgers, go on a Thursday night for their special - burger and fries (thin cut, potato stick fries so yum) for $7!!! We have had the chicken salad - pecans, cranberries and amazing. The Reuben was delish as well as the butcher's sandwich. Service has been phenomenal and whatever you want from the bar, they can do it. Enjoy~ read more

Warm Wine...Cool Food. My wife and I recently had dinner at Wren. Nice atmosphere, small local bar, friendly staff. As for our meal, honestly, we've had better. We started with a bottle of Shiraz wine, which came to the table overly warm. We should have returned it, but instead we added some ice from our water glasses which cooled it down enough to make it more palatable. The opposite occurred when we received our meals. The fried green tomatoe appetizer came out luke warm topped with a blue cheese crumble that must have been straight out of the refrigerator (too cold) which overpowered the appetizer. As for dinner, I ordered the famous Mama's meatloaf, and my wife ordered the shrimp and grits. Both had good flavor but again were served luke warm. Interestingly, the server warned my wife the plate was hot, but her food was not. With the portion size of the meatloaf, it was obviously pre-cooked and reheated. Unfortunately, the entire meal was on the dry side and again luke warm. As for the onion ring garnish they were cold, oily and mushy too. It seems like the kitchen is cutting corners. On the upside, we've been to Wren a number of times for lunch and have had some good meals. read more

I like Wren. Enough so that I recommended it to very tired friends who were passing through Beaufort. I am embarrassed by the reception they received and the rude staff. Not only were they left waiting at the hostess desk for 10 minutes, when they pointed that out the host disagreed and argued that it wasn't 10 minutes. Subsequently, they were told that salads could not be packaged to go. Given the less than welcoming experience, they left and ate fast food. I live in Beaufort now, but will never make the mistake of recommending what I thought was a fun and delicious option to my guests. This was a terrible first impression for people from out of town. The worst experience you could have at ALL of the restaurants in Beaufort. The manager Vin was beyond rude and condescending. The other manager was just a pacifier. We were a party of 5, four out of the five dinners were cold and incomplete, sauces cold, fries cold and over done burger that had to be sent back. It's hard to mess up moules frites, but Wren was up to the task. They came in a bowl, with soggy fries heaped on top. The mussels were barely lukewarm and a somewhat mushy. There was no broth. Almost certainly these had been cooked well in advance and then served after an attempt to warm them up. Carelessly prepared. Carelessly served (by the kitchen. The server was ok.) My wife had flounder that was covered with a heap of sort of southwestern beans, corn etc. Terrible presentation. My wife had a decent but undistinguished glass of house wine. My Bellini had no peach flavor, just some coloring. The bread was good. The place was loud though not full and the music was Shrieking Divas. I've had some acceptable lunches at Wren in the past few years, but this dinner continued the string of disasters each time I venture back. No more. Never again at dinner. read more

Every thing from the linen to the lighting is intentional. Finding a gem like this in a beautiful small town -- what more could you ask for. Our first time at Wren. We had salads and all were just delightful. I had the shrimp Cobb with hot bacon dressing. Wow - some of the best I have ever had. The food here is generally delicious. Their burgers are great and every special I have had is excellent. However, the service is extremely hit or miss. On one occasion, our food took an hour to arrive and we were told they were understaffed since they weren't expecting as many patrons as they had. However, this was a Friday night around seven and it was the same amount of patrons they usually have. They also manually type in the prices and my group has been overcharged by as much as $60.00 because the waitress put too many zeros. I do go back, usually for lunch or an early dinner since he food is good, but now, I always check my bill. read more
