The mussels and frites were the best I've ever had- perfectly seasoned, creamy but light- and I've had some very good mussels at places like Vin Rouge of Durham and Brasserie of Wilmington, NC. My fiancé had a burger since it was burger night and he was very happy with it. We sat at the bar because there were no tables available and it was a really nice experience- the bartenders were very friendly and the chairs were comfortable. We were staying in Beaufort on a Thursday night so we could attend the Marine graduation at Parris Island the next morning. We wandered around the quaint town center, and stumbled on this stylish and busy restaurant. We were so pleased with every aspect of the experience. First, Shannon took great care of us and took some time to have a friendly chat as well. We like to order a variety of little things off the appetizer menu, and every morsel that came out of the kitchen was delectable. It was 1/2 price hamburger night, and the ladies sitting next to us ordered these. They were humongous and were said to be really tasty. These same ladies, transplants from mid west and northern states, told us some intriguing stories about the culture of the Low Country. We had been in the Low Country for 6 days, in Charleston and in Savannah, and my husband and I agreed that this was our favorite restaurant experience on the whole trip. read more

Had a wonderful dinner at Wren, was very impressed by all aspects of the experience. Wren was recommended by a local, who told us it would be hard to go wrong either there or at Breakwaters across the street. We parked on the Wren side of the street, so the die was cast. Beaufort doesn't "play" particularly late, but even at 9:55 on a Friday (they stop kitchen service at 10, according to hostess) we were seated and offered the full menu with friendly coordination between the hostess and the kitchen. The had an impressive wine list, half a dozen beers on tap (including microbrews), and the menu diversity was welcome. Our parties orders included pasta, cioppino, and fish tacos, and every plate was great in both presentation and execution. Northerners (we all were) shouldn't be scared of the grits in many of the offerings - they were delectable. Fish tacos were a HUGE serving, and came standing up in a bed of grits. They were pleasantly overfilled with great ingredients; the only addition we could have wished for was some habanero sauce on the side to pick up the heat. Flavor was great. Cioppino was also impressive, with a mix of fish, shrimp, mussels (pre-shelled), and massive scallops. The bar ran out of Sweetwater IPA during the meal, but when the available back-up was Ruination from Stone, it wasn't like there was much complaining to do. Only had drinks so cant vouch for the food. Not a lot of "happening places" of night life in Beaufort but if you are looking for a place to grab drinks after dinner, stop by Wren. First of all, the address Yelp has for the restaurant is not correct. The address is 210 Carteret St in Beaufort, SC. We went there for lunch today. The decor is a combination of down home and avant gard which gives the place an elegant, yet informal, feeling. The bar is very inviting. The service was attentive and friendly and our waitperson was very knowledgeable about the menu and the wines. The wine list for wine by the glass is basic but the labels are excellent as are the wines. The menu has something for everyone with soups, salads, sandwiches, and regular entrees. We both ordered the BLT and guacamole sandwich which came with chips that seemed home made. The sandwiches were large and delicious. Prices are a bit high but what you get is worth what you pay for in a restaurant of this caliber. We wii be back and I highly recommend the restaurant. read more

RACISM. If you you have an appetite for white racism and a side of fries Wren's at the corner of Carteret and Port Republic street in Beaufort SC is just the restaurant for you. It is important to note that I am African-American. Although the restaurant's kitchen is almost exclusively staffed with Black and Latino cooks, the management and servers are white and un-apologetically racist. Upon entry into Wren's there are subconscious reminders of the stench of white supremacy in the air. You try to convince yourself that it's 'all in your head' until you are ignored by white servers and not given the accommodations afforded to white patrons. Notwithstanding the dim lighting designed to create a desirable ambiance in the dining area, I was directed and seated by my white waitress in a particularly dark and undesirable corner near the back door where a curtain obstructed the view all those entering the front door of the restaurant from my presence. The meal delivery time was average thanks to kitchen staff, however, my server noticeably glanced over at my drink (while idly walking by, as the restaurant was not at all busy) several times and never offered a refill. When I requested recommended options of sauces for my fish, the server misinformed me that they had no additional sauces for me to choose from. Thanks to one of the cooks I was provided three different sauces to test with my meal. I reported my dissatisfaction to the manager who was also a white women and she immediately began to make excuses for the server's unacceptable behavior ("We're short of staff", etc...- even though the restaurant was was not busy, as evidenced by half the kitchen staff standing around because of the lack of orders). The manager refused to hear me out, yelled at me telling "go home!" Very bad experience. read more

Food was decent but overpriced, the vegetables were severely undercooked for both of the meals we ordered. The asparagus was essentially raw. Overall not terrible but there are much better restaurants with better service and food for a lower price. read more

We wandered into Wren for lunch one day while visiting Beaufort, and were very pleased with what we found. The decor and atmosphere is very cool - exposed brick, chalkboards, and burlap pillows. I drank peach bellinis (yum!) and was very pleasantly surprised to find out that the Lobster and Crab Bisque was gluten free (and very good). For my main course, I ate the Lowcountry Cobb Salad, which was very tasty. My husband ordered a beer and a BLT Club and was very happy with his meal, as well. The prices were reasonable. I would love to write a review about this place but unfortunately I never got a chance to try the food. After being seated My girlfriend and I waited for over 10 minutes and we were never even acknowledged. Tables were being cleared, the table next to us even got a second round of drinks and we got nothing...not a hello, not even a water. It was infuriating...and extremely disappointing to be so obviously ignored. We left and I didn't even get the opportunity to tell the hostess because she was somewhere else when we walked out and across the street to Breakwater. This is the 5th time I've dined at Wren and have been satisfied each time. My parents live in Beaufort and frequent Wren and they love to take out of town guests there for dinner. Although service is always pretty good tonight's server, Nicole, was the best we've had. She was very personable and sweet. We ordered the shrimp & artichoke dip for an appetizer and it was delicious. My parents got the wahoo that was 1 of 3 specials they ran tonight and they both loved it. My boyfriend ordered the veal, pork & beef lasagna and said it was fantastic. I ordered the pasta del mar and it was awesome! Nicole packed up our lefttovers in boxes which she labeled and bagged for us. The wine prices are very reasonable. My mother and my boyfriend each ordered a glass of the exact same pinot noir for $10 that I ordered at a restaurant in Charlotte a few months ago for $16 a glass! I came in with my family in a sort of business/fellowship dinner with a big group. So, I didn't expect a whole lot when it came to the speed of the service. However, the service was faster than I expected for a big group such as ours. Although the service was friendly and fast, when we received our main course, everyone's food came out slowly one at a time. Normally, at least most of the food would be out at once. But, most of our colleagues waited more than 10 minutes after some of us were served before they received their plates. That is my only gripe. I can understand the wait due to certain food items being prepared differently than others. But, my 5th star still stands absent. I will say that the food was absolutely fantastic. The portions were extremely great. The texture, and color were unique. And, of course, the taste was just phenomenal. Make sure to save room for desert. Wonderful service and spectacular food. I had the Buttermilk Breaded Pork Chops with apple brandy sauce. They were moist with great flavor. I ate every bite! My husband had the shrimp and grits and almost licked the bowl. He said it was the best he ever had. My son cleared his kids cheese pizza. The Italian herb butter was awesome too.
