Food was very good and no one batted an eye when I asked for mayo for my fries. Seems that is a Canadian thing! We tried out several new beers (we had a designated driver) and went home with leftover chicken wings (in case we got stranded on the road in the storm?) It wasn't until after I had already put the salt on my food and eaten my meal that I noticed dark, unidentified debris/foreign material inside the shaker. I took several close-up photographs of exactly what I found. I immediately handed the shaker to our waitress and explained what I had discovered. Her response was simply, "Thanks." She took the shaker away, but there was no apology, no explanation, no manager who came over to speak with us, and no real acknowledgment that I had already consumed food using salt from that container. The restaurant was not particularly busy at the time, which made the lack of response even more surprising. I understand that things can occasionally be missed in any restaurant. I'm not expecting perfection. But when something involving cleanliness or food safety is brought to a restaurant's attention, how the restaurant responds matters enormously. In this case, the response concerns me almost as much as what I found in the shaker. I left feeling genuinely grossed out, and unfortunately, the way the situation was handled has not encouraged me to return and eat there again. I know Cat's Caboose is a very popular restaurant. I'm also realistic enough to know that losing my business or receiving one negative review probably isn't going to have a significant impact on them. That really isn't why I'm sharing this. I believe consumers should share both their good and bad experiences so other people can make their own informed choices. Where we spend our money, our time and our attention matters. We work hard for our money, and when we choose to spend it at a business, it's reasonable to expect cleanliness, appropriate food-handling practices and genuine concern when something goes wrong. I have photographs showing exactly what I found, so I'm not going to speculate about what the material actually was. People can look at the photos and draw their own conclusions. I can only speak about what happened to me today: I used that salt shaker on my food, ate my meal, discovered what was inside afterward, reported it to the restaurant, and was extremely disappointed by how casually my concern was handled. Service was fair - our server seemed to have the majority of tables in another section and out of view. We were her only table on the one side, so it was a bit difficult to get her attention. Atmosphere and decor was good. Over the years, I've been disappointed that Turtle Jack's in general has changed and reduced their classic menu choices. I used to love their Apple Brie Burger with special sauces, bruschetta with reduced balsamic vinaigrette, and brunch menu. I'm sure it was more labour-intensive so I get it, but it was the reason that this restaurant stood out from the rest in its early years. I will try their dusted chicken wings again in the future.
