Takeout review. I'm living on takeout! I randomly had a craving for Honey Walnut Shrimp. I've dined here before, and the Sichuan dishes definitely delivered. However, I'm currently restricted from heavily spiced/spicy food. The Honey Walnut Shrimp was a treat! It's sweet, creamy and the walnuts had the perfect crunch. Not to mention the shrimp was a good size. General Tso Chicken was battered well, and juicy. We asked for "no spicy" and chili oil on the side. Both entrees came with a good amount of white rice. This is my go to Chinese place. I've not had one bad dish here. They're decently priced for the portion and food quality. We ordered 5 dishes and they all came out pretty fast. The portion is pretty decent for that price. Inside the restaurant is pretty clean, including the restroom. But then we got there right at when they just opened. I don't know how it's going to look like after rush hours. I really liked this place! great casual dinner spot for couples, friends , family or get togethers. We ordered the Szchuan beef with veggies and we added shrimp; it was very yummy and spicy. A biit on the salty side but nothing crazy. They advice you in regards the spice levels and the server also provided a palate example on how that would taste. Very nice. Then, however, I ordered the peppercorn chicken and The first one they gave us was unfortunately inedible from the salt; But as soon as I mentioned it to our server, she quickly made sure they brought us a new one cooked very well and surely enjoyed it. Came here on a Friday for lunch and we tried the spicy dry pot, chili oil dumplings, and the spicy boiled fish. As a big fan of Sichuan food I was super excited to finally try this OG spot. The spicy dry pot combination and it was great with a generous amount of shrimp, chicken, and beef mixed with green beans, cauliflower, onions, and mushrooms. The spice level was exactly what you'd expect from a Sichuan place making it the perfect dish to pair with white rice. (8.5/10) The chili oil dumplings were also very enjoyable with thin dumpling wrappers stuffed with pork and drenched in savory and spicy chili oil . (8/10) The spicy boiled fish was definitely the star of the meal. Everything from the flaky white fish to the spicy broth that it is cooked in was super authentic. I enjoyed how the broth was a bit thicker and less oily than other places I've tried. (9/10) Overall, the large portions, great service, and delicious flavors make this place a perfect spot for a family style meal. The parking is also super easy. Chinese Sichuan spot on the corner of Eldridge and Briar Forest. There's plenty of parking up front so that's easy. The interior is pretty standard; definitely not as modern or clean feeling as some of the more hip Chinese spots but definitely not feeling like a hole in the wall or anything. We ordered wontons, smoked duck, walnut shrimp, and kung pao chicken. Dishes were fine overall, with the flavors being pretty much on expectations but nothing stood out in an exceptional manner. The kung pao chicken's sauce was a bit bland and lacking compared to what we've had in the city. The walnut shrimp was very crispy and cooked well but was pretty skimp on walnuts and way too sweet on the mayonnaise-based sauce. The smoked duck had decent flavor but portions of the duck were very dry where the meat was thinned out. The breast cooked pieces with less bone pieces were definitely the best tasting pieces from the duck. Service was fine and the servers were attentive considering how busy they got. Overall, it's a Sichuan spot that is fairly authentic to the traditional Chinese palette which is nice since there are not too many similar Chinese options in the area. However, none of the dishes we tried stood out enough to make you want to drive to it from other parts of town just to try it. read more

The name is actually a Chinese saying, "no spice, no joy" and as a Sichuan person, I wholeheartedly agree. Wula is a very solid choice to get your heat on. I would say they are comparable to the Mala Sichuan empire all around Houston. The good thing is this is in the Energy Corridor (or bad, depending on where you are in Houston). The space is quite roomy with Chinese decor to make you feel right at home. We ordered the classics: spicy boiled fish (also known as water boiled fish), spicy chicken cube, and the west lake beef soup. Everything came out just right, and PLENTY of spice. The chicken traditionally doesn't have the onions, but I think it's a good choice, it makes it more fragrant and also adds some vegetables to the dish. I would say there's a little less chicken meat given the types of pieces they use, so you'll get some crunchy bits that's not quite 'meat'. The spicy boiled fish is intensely fragrant, definitely a top dish for me. Goes soooo well with rice. Wula's is less saucy than other spots, thus more authentic, a plus! Prices are very very fair. We came in today which is a Sunday at 11:30 a little bit after they opened. There was no wait to get seated and our food came super quick too! You won't find such good value authentic and flavorful sichuan food like this anywhere else in the Houston area. They have a free appetizer upon checkin. Both dishes had great flavors and the peppercorns were delicious. It felt authentic and the portions were generous. The chicken was crispy and not oily. They have several of the westernized Chinese food dishes on their menu. I've tried several of them and they were all good. They also have a large variety of traditional Chinese dishes. I was reluctant at first to try them but I have since branched out and tried several. Everything I've had has been fresh, well cooked and delicious. What we loved - Couples tendon - it's a classic dish. The slice of beef tendon and tripe is drenched in hot pepper oil. I visited here with a small group. Neither this restaurant nor the shopping center was even here when I used to live across the street. Now, it's supposedly one of the most popular Chinese restaurants in Houston. We came on a Friday evening around Xmas time and found only a few other tables of customers, one of which was a 10 top. They have a yelp check in for a free app, so I took advantage of that. We ordered eggplant, wula chicken, cumin beef, chili dumplings, boiling fish, and lo mein with beef. Everything tasted pretty good to me, with my favorites being the eggplant, cumin beef, and boiling fish. The dipping sauce for the dumplings is very salty, the chicken is just average and lo mein a pretty standard dish. The service was friendly and fairly good for an Asian restaurant. read more

Definitely worth a shot if you're a Houstonian who loves Szechuan food. One of the items that really stood out to me was the fried foods--most notably the fried pork intestines, which combines interesting notes of texture, flavor, and spice. Light, yet crispy crunch, but with a gooey middle. Scallion pancake was just ok. Definitely have had better. Red dumplings had a nice al dente wrapper. I typically like sauce that can easily overpower the rest of the dish, but the flavor was mild. Boiled peppered fish can be quite spicy and food comes out pretty hot. It's an easy win getting the fried chicken, but I will still say the fried intestines surprisingly took it for me. A little pricey for Chinese food, but I would say this restaurant will definitely save you from traveling to chinatown for Szechuan if you're in its vicinity. Service is prompt. Ambiance is rather quiet, but understandably for the area the restaurant is located. I would definitely want to come back and try a few other dishes if I can. After coming back a few times, upgrading this to a 5. I'm not big on Szechuan food, but this place can custom the spiciness level and even removes peppercorn on request. The service is superb every single time. Let me tell you how they go above and beyond. The waitress noticed that my colleague had a standard mask that looked a little small on his face. She offered to get him a 3d one that would fit better. Talk about service! Beyond that, the drinks are always filled up and the servers attentive. I've gotten the amazing crispy fish (5/5) a couple of times (sans peppercorn) and loved it every time. It's not all breading like some places and the spice is just right. For non-spicy eaters, I've become a fan of the garlic and shiitake mushroom (5/5) plate. The pork is thin and tender, the shiitake mushrooms generous, and the sauce it comes with is great when mixed with rice. The portions here are also huge - two orders (one entree + one veggie) lasted me 3-4 meals. And believe it or not... I thought the kung pao chicken (3/5) was not bad. I would say the sauteed green beans (4/5) are hit or miss - sometimes the quality of the green beans are little "old" so it's a bit stringy. But when it's on, it's crispy and delicious. Okay, so I was clearing off photos off my camera yesterday. I found many of which were what I call gratuitous food porn pics. Hands down the winner was Wula Buhuan. 40 pictures in just a couple of years! I can't help myself. I just have to shoot a pic of everything I get from there. It looks that good, but more importantly the taste matches the looks. It's always fresh, colorful, and good. Sometimes I just shoot the pic to send to my son specifically to torture him with. He moved to Utah a couple of years ago as he misses this place so much. Usually, I'll roll in there around 3 or 4 by myself and order 4 or 5 different things. The cook probably thinks a family just came in, and is eating family style. Nope just me eating family style, but I have enough for about 3 days of yummy goodness. I try to try something different every time I come in that is not typically in my comfort zone, and boy I am glad I have. I have lately started to narrow it down to the flavors I have grown to crave and miss. If I was in town more often I'd probably go in more often and try more things just to do it. Until I came here I don't think I've ever had REAL Chinese cuisine. Just the standard Americanized Chinese version of Chinese food. Wula Buhuan will serve the typical if that is what you order, and you will get a good version of that, but you are REALLY doing yourself a disservice if you don't try the real Szechuan cuisine. (weird I use "cuisine" here where I never do with anywhere else) I've never not eaten it at the restaurant, and had it take out so I can not speak to that, but I always take my leftovers and love them. I've never had anything I didn't like. There are things I prefer over others. Even some I won't order again, but it wasn't because it tasted bad, or that it wasn't prepared well. Really it would be because I felt they have somethings that are yummier than others. I certainly have my go to dishes, but I try to try a new dish every time. The traditional lamb was a huge surprising win. I tend to go between wula chicken, and spicy chicken cubes. I love the garlic pork. Man I'm really torturing myself because I won't be in town until next week, but you I'll be rolling in ASAP. This write up is long overdue, and something I've meant to do long ago.
