I'm not the biggest fan of the numbing pepper but there wasn't a lot, just to give it some flavor so I enjoyed everything. The cumin lamb was yummy and I really liked the fish. The lotus root was crunchy and the water spinach was the usual sauted with garlic. The garlic bacon was fun to eat and I really liked the sauce. Service was great as well. Very quick to get the food out and my server was very nice when I asked questions about different items. Ambiance - 8/10 It's definitely an older restaurant. The food here is fantastic! When we walked in it was very busy, but we were seated immediately as a party of two, which was impressive. The food came out quickly and everything we tried was delicious. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the service. It was extremely busy and it seemed like there were only two servers handling the entire floor. If you didn't ask for what you needed when they initially came by, it was very difficult to get anyone's attention afterward. We had quite a bit of leftovers and couldn't get anyone to come over for to-go boxes or the check I ended up having to go to the front to ask. Mala's Bellaire ambiance is definitely cozier and homier than their locations in Montrose and Katy Asian Town. It has a more quaint, mom-and-pop feel. Their service was great, and their extensive menu made it hard to decide what to order! But overall, I didn't feel like being too adventurous, so I ordered the usual: 1) Mapo Tofu: (4.5/5) Pretty tasty! There was definitely a numbing spice, but PERSONALLY not a fan of the addition of ginger, but this is purely personal preference, but something to keep in mind if it's not your favorite ingredient. 2) Eggplants in Spicy Garlic Sauce: (5/5) chefs kiss, you can't go wrong with this. Maybe the Montrose and Bellaire location prepare it a bit differently, but I felt that the Bellaire location did not skimp out on the garlic pieces; I also don't think the dish was very spicy, however. 3) Spicy and Crispy Chicken: (5/5) There's not much to say, but this is another classic that you can't mess up! The interior was roomy and had a fun decorative vibe, I absolutely LOVED the various plates adorning the back wall (especially the owl). The food was so so good, though picking from their extensive menu was challenging. We ordered a variety of options: the spicy crispy chicken, the cordyceps, the chicken fried rice and the Mapo tofu. Every dish complemented each other and went well with both the fried rice and the white rice. As someone who cannot eat very spicy food, I appreciated the described spice levels our server gave us and found them accurate. The standout dish for me, among all of the delicious items, was the Mapo Tofu, with the soft tofu pairing perfectly with the spicy tangy gravy. Located in the Metropole Center in Houston's Chinatown, Mala Sichuan Bistro was founded at this location in 2011, by a Chengdu native. She wanted to bring authentic Sichuan cuisine to Houston. With her great success, her restaurant has been named a Michelin Bib Gourmand (one of only fifteen Houston area restaurants) in the inaugural guide for Texas. In 2017, the former chef was a James Beard finalist for the Best Chef: Southwest category. With its success, came more locations, with five in total. It's an impressive resume, making the restaurant worth visiting if in the Houston area. Every time I visit my nephew, he surprises me with a new cuisine that he has learned to like. This time, it was Sichuan cuisine. So on a Monday, his dad, he, and I made a visit for lunch. Parking was plentiful in the strip mall, and we got seated immediately. The menu is large, and my nephew knew what he wanted to order. We ended up eating most of it, meaning the portions weren't huge but the dishes were very tasty. The meal came with a communal bowl of white rice, along with a self-serve carafe of ice water to refill our glasses as the numbness of the white peppercorns took over. Mapo Tofu ($13.99) - the classic Sichuan dish, their rendition is pretty good. Eggplants in Spicy Garlic Sauce ($13.99) - I still remember a discussion where an expert clearly stated that you can not switch out eggplant for Chinese eggplant. I don't like eggplant, but tried it here (per my nephew's suggestion) and found that I liked it, especially since the sauce was so good. Next time, would ask the waitress what other dishes use this delicious garlic sauce. Twice cooked pork ($14.99) - the authentic version uses sliced, boiled pork belly, sauteed fresh leaks in a fermented black and broad bean sauce. Quite good. House Special Funky Cold Noodles ($8.99) - cold wheat noodles in a unique sauce. Never had this before: it was unique in taste, and went really well with the rest of the meal. Shredded Pork with Spiced Dry Tofu ($14.99) - this was my choice, and it was good. I liked fried tofu, so was hoping dried tofu would be close. It kinda was, but would have been better (for me) if fried instead of dried. Probably the weakest out of the 5 dishes. They do have fresh fish on the menu served whole, but the only choice was tilapia. As a whole, the dishes tried here were not mind-numbingly hot (like other Sichuan restaurants I've tried where using chinese red peppers in the same amount as the rest of the ingredients). And clay pot cooking didn't seem to be on the menu either. But the use of mala spices was definitely there, numbing the tongue. Mala Sichuan has been one of our favorite places to eat when we are craving Asian food. It is by far the best Sichuan food I've had in Houston. They got on the Bib Gourmand list and it was well deserved. Every dish we've had at Mala has so much flavor and if you're looking for true Sichuan food, Mala brings the heat. For those not familiar with Sichuan food, it is famous for the Sichuan peppers used in the cooking which give a numbing sensation instead of a straight heat/hot sensation you'd be familiar with in Mexican or Indian cooking. When you come here, bring more than 2 people so you can order a lot of dishes and share them family style. This restaurant is also reasonably priced with most dishes in the $10-$20. Ambiance: Mala is a relatively small restaurant with about 20 tables. The bigger tables have a lazy Susan in the middle to share food. The restaurant is clean and the wait staff is very friendly. Parking: Mala is located in one of the strip malls in Chinatown and shares a parking lot with all of the restaurants in the same strip mall. I've never had an issue finding parking here. Parking is free but you may have to park far away if the strip mall is packed. The walk from the car to restaurant is always worth it! Service: the waiters and waitress here are very attentive and were active with refilling water and bringing out food. They also boxed up our leftovers for us which was nice. Food: we had been here many times before and we have a standard order which is usually good for 4 people. We order the hot and sour soup to start and then order the spicy crispy chicken, cumin lamb and the dry fried double veggies. Hot and sour soup: the soup comes in a huge bowl and is more than enough for 4 people to share. This hot and sour soup is a little more watery than what some may be used to. It has a strong pepper flavor which gives it a little tang. It's a great sharing dish for those who love hot and sour soup. Spicy crispy chicken: this is easily our favorite dish to order here. The chicken comes perfectly fried and is loaded with Sichuan flavor. It pairs perfectly with the white rice served on the side. The chicken comes in bite sized cubes and is easy to eat with chopsticks. Highly recommend ordering this dish. Cumin lamb: the lamb in this dish is super tender and this dish comes loaded with jalapeños and onions. Once again, this dish has so much flavor and brings a little heat. If you don't like lamb, don't get this dish because the lamb flavor is strong. Dry fried double veggies: the dry fried double veggies are our favorite veggie dish here. The string beans are lightly fried and come with bamboo and some ground pork. The string beans are crispy yet tender and the ground pork and bamboo give the dish a nice touch. I highly recommend Mala for anyone craving Sichuan food. This place is reasonably priced and brings all of the flavor in each dish. The staff is friendly and ready to help with any questions. Come with a large party to get the most out of your experience so you can try multiple dishes and also come here to eat family style because it's always more fun than having only one dish! This is the original Mala Sichuan, it's been years since I've come here but have to say this is still the GOAT! Took the family here on a Sunday around 6pm, thankfully they were able to give us a private table since we had 8 people. The building was a tad dated and smelled a little funky, but we didn't come here for the ambiance! We ordered the Tea Smoked Duck (very good, very fresh), Mushroom Beef Medley, Mapo Tofu, 辣子鸡，the sliced fish with chili peppers (live fish), som veggie dishes and lots of appetizers. Everything was top notch and I can see why they got the Bib Gourmand recommendation from Michelin. My mouth is always leaving tingling and satisfied because not only do the dishes have the perfect amount of spice, it doesn't overpower the flavor of the dishes itself. I took some friends who were visiting from out of town and they absolutely loved it!! The spicy and crunchy chicken was absolutely delicious paired with the eggplants and mapo tofu. I appreciated how each sauce has a different base and flavor to it which was enjoyable. The soup did have a slightly fishy taste but I enjoyed pairing it with the ginger and sauerkraut in the dish. The soup was always pretty thin which paired well with rice. I would recommend going in large groups to try and share all the different flavors. There's tons of parking spots in the lot so we easily found parking. Upon entry we were greeted by the hostess who honestly was quite busy because he was the waiter for the entire restaurant too. But he was super attentive which I appreciated. The restaurant was moderately busy, though not too loud noise level wise. Everything was just on point: excellent service, delicious food, and casual ambiance! We ordered the hot and sour soup for appetizers it was so fresh, and tasted so good! We like to add spices so we asked for chili oil on the side to enhance our tastebuds. The soup doesn't have any protein, it has tofu and basic hot and sour ingredients. 10/10 One of our favorite dishes at Mala is the Dry Pot Beef it has a mix of lotus, Sichuan peppers, some other veggies and it's so flavorful! If you're looking to get a taste of what Sichuan cuisine embodies, and not just "Chinese food" (that term is way too broad), this is just the place. I frequent this restaurant about several times a year and am never let down. Most of these dishes are a type of deliciousness that the average American has never experienced -- and it's a shame. It is worth noting that "Mala" roughly translates to "numbing spice". This is largely due to the peppercorns that Sichuan cuisine commonly uses. The dishes that are labeled as spicy are different from the spiciness that you get with say, Cholula or tabasco sauce. Mala spice is known for LITERALLY making your tongue go numb if you indulge enough. Oddly, it is common for water to start tasting like Sprite at that point. If you have a decent spice tolerance, give the spicy dishes a try. If you don't, there are plenty of non-spicy dishes with my stamp of approval. Some of my favorites: Spicy boiled fish (水煮鱼) - all time personal favorite. The Chinese translation directly comes out to "water boiled fish" which may incorrectly make you assume that it's a bland and boring dish. That couldn't be any less true. Super flavory and super spicy. You better have at least one friend with a high spice tolerance in your group to finish this. Salt and pepper pork chops (椒鹽豬扒) - this is the fried food you never knew you needed. A dish that the majority of meat eaters would probably agree tastes good. Hard to go wrong with this one. Mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) - a spicy blend of soft tofu cubes, ground pork, and scallions. You do not have to be a tofu lover to appreciate this dish. Cumin lamb (孜然羊肉) - if you've never had lamb before, this is a must. To be honest, even if you've had lamb but not as Chinese cuisine, it's still a must. Servers come by to refill water often and will most likely help you with recommendations if you're new to this type of food. It's expected to order dishes family style, which is when you order several dishes and share them all with the rest of your table. When you finally get tired of orange chicken and kung pao, take some friends with you and come here to order some real Chinese cuisine. read more

I can't believe how amazing my experience was while visiting Mala Sichuan. My fellow Yelpers did not let me down with their reviews and guidance to finding this spot in beautiful H-town! I believe there are four or five other locations in Houston and I'm not sure which one is the "original" -- but this visit did not disappoint. I tried the Combination Fried Rice, Crab Meat and Asparagus Soup, Mapu Tofu, and Sautéed Greens with garlic. First of all, everything in TX is bigger (coming from a California girl) because the portion sizes were enough to feed a party of 6! I thoroughly enjoyed every dish but my favorite out of the spread was hands down -- their Mapo Tofu. It's described on the menu as "Soft tofu cubes braised to perfection with fresh leeks in mala bean curd sauce and fermented black bean sauce" and it hit every mark -- absolutely delicious. I love this place. Ever since I first heard about Mala five years ago, I've been coming as often as I can. The Sharpstown location is my favorite, though the new Heights location is also pretty good! I was so happy to come here for a celebratory dinner after an exam this past weekend. Our party of four was hungry-ish, and wanted to try out some delicious, tongue-numbing food. We walked in to their general dining area which has several tables set up close together (but not too close!) and were quickly given a table. Given it was 7pm on a Saturday, I was surprised - the last few times I've been there, they've been packed with a line out the door! We opted for the Dan dan noodles, spicy and crispy chicken, and the devourable beef with konjac (hint: it's all in the name!) We were excited to try out our food, which came quickly! We tucked in to the deliciously seasoned noodles and especially enjoyed the spiciness and crispness of the chicken, which truly lives up to its name! The tongue numbing peppers in the devourable beef were also a pleasure. We did not care for the jelly, though the beef was tasty and the sauce was lovely with our hot rice. I will add that two of my favorite menu options - the red oil dumplings and cumin lamb - have been consistently delicious on every visit. My first Mala visit at this location was just okay. However, this visit has changed my mind and I will definitely be coming back. I had the best spread at Mala during my most recent visit. I am still thinking about it a few days after. We ordered: Spicy and Crispy Chicken - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and full of flavor with a tingling heat from the peppercorns Water Boiled Fish Fillet - tender fish fillets in a savory broth with chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, garlic, and ginger. My favorite of the night! Shredded Pork in Spicy Garlic Sauce - The pork was good, but I thought the sauce was a bit too tangy for my liking this time. Still a very solid dish. Mapo Tofu - soft tofu cubes simmered in a spicy, savory sauce. I will say this dish had the most depth in flavor, it was probably the best mapo tofu I have had. Had to ask for everything - napkins, refills, silverware and OUR FOOD. 8 out of the 9 people were served their food and the last order of a pretty big dish was forgotten. We asked if the dish was forgotten and we were told no but proceeded to wait another 20 minutes while everyone else ate their food. I love coming here for their spicy fried rice. They do a really good job with their spices and flavors. My friends wanted to try their chicken one this time so we ordered both - one with chicken and one with shrimp. I prefer the shrimp one more. The place is generally busy during lunch time but we've managed to get a table every time. Their servers are friendly and will help you if you have any concerns. Been coming here over the years. It is one of our favorite Szechuan restaurant and have never been disappointed. Mala Sichuan is participating in Eat, Drink HTX going on till end of February. Ordered the west lake beef soup, spicy eggplant and twice cooked pork. Flavor was amazing. While it is spicy and tasty, it was not hot. Great lunch price for $15 and they donate $1 to the food bank. Restaurant has a nice feel with white linen on the table rather than plastic that you see in other places. Servers were friendly and prompt. First time customer and it was a good experience from entering the place to exiting. The service was fast and smooth. The place was neat and spacious. They handle big group between 5-7 when we went there, and there's also for small group or single customer. The interior was cool, the catchy part was the wall full of plates. The food was served warm and fresh. We had the Dan Dan Noodles and the Three Pepper Beaten Duck. The food was savory and we enjoyed every bite of it. The food was good for 2-3 people depends on how much you can eat but they have a big serving. Overall this place was a good find for us! read more
