We offered to move to the nearby separate table for two, as this sounded upsetting to the staffer as she said she was getting off and couldn't take our order. We said that was fine and she could send over another staffer, we wanted to make things easy. But she just left, and was clearly angry at us. Eventually someone else came to take our order. Took quite a while to get the food and drinks, but they were good, especially the french fries. But then we were told we could not pay for our order, as it had been added to our friends' tab and they had unknowingly already paid for us when they cashed out. It was weird. We are sorry to have upset the waitress, but not sure what we could have done differently, as there was no one there to seat us and we thought we could sit at an open table or join our friends.
