Good spot for an in between cut - they can do a buzzer but it sometimes gets a little dicey with the scissors.

As a curly girl it's really tough to find a suitable hairstylist who knows how to cut with care and understanding of your curls. I went to Leonor for a cut because she is my mom's stylist and I was not disappointed! She was really sweet and listened to what I had to say regarding my hair rather than brushing it off like most stylists. I asked for a trim, more volume at the top, and shaggy bangs. She washed my hair and cut all but left the bangs for last. She did not cut too much and let me use my own curl products and diffused to see how short the curly bangs became. When we realized I needed it a bit shorter she went back in (dry cut) then diffused the rest. I am honestly so shocked by how fast but careful the cut was. Searching for essential goods and services, whether a laundromat, a barber, or Indian takeout, can involve a bit of trial and error. I've been coming to X-Press Cuts every 2-3 months since I moved to Downtown Jersey City from the suburbs 4+ years ago and have always gotten a good trim. The place isn't big, it isn't fancy and can get quite crowded at times (walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are recommended), but you'll get fine service from anyone there. And you won't go broke in the process: a basic men's cut is $20, and every 8th cut will score you $5 off your next. I had and unpleasant experience with Elizabeth today. I came in with my curly hair past my shoulders. I explained to her what I wanted. She kept insisting that she was correct and knew what she was doing. I kept stating that she was cutting my hair way to short and it was not what I wanted. I wanted to have it to the bottom of my chin and she chopped it up to nose length. I believe it was extremely unprofessional of her to not listen to what I wanted. Even after the fact she still said i Was wrong and that when it would dry it would look better. That was absolutely not the case. I ultimately had to go to a different salon to fix the damage she had done. I am highly unsatisfied with the service she has provided me today. I do not recommend her as a stylist. read more

I explained what I wanted and the woman told me to come back the next morning. Perfect. I did. She did an amazing job. I mean, beautiful, a FULL HEAD of highlights (and I have a lot of hair) done really well. And she worked quickly and easily - I was done in a little over an hour. She was amazing.And she was going to blow it out straight for no extra $$ but I had to leave. She toweled it and dried it a bit anyway. Come on, this would have easily been over $200. everywhere else.. And what did I pay? $85. WHAAAAT!!! I normally don't write reviews but I thought I needed to write this one because a haircut is something you're gonna have to deal with for a good month.(whereas a bad meal can instantly forgotten about) I moved to the area a couple months ago and figured I would try this place out since it's the cheapest place around. I asked for "#3 buzzer around the sides and back, and keep it a little longer on top with the scissors". The woman cut off way too much on top. I like to have the top longer since it's starting to thin and I want to it show as little as possible (I'm 26). I gave them the benefit of the doubt and went again today (about 6 weeks later). I got a different woman (don't know any names), and asked "#3 buzzer around the sides and back, and keep the top quite a bit longer". Same exact thing. Evenly short the whole way through the top with clearly my scalp showing. I don't know what the women hear in this place, but it's not what the customer is saying. I'll be spending a little extra money for a different barber. read more

I am very disappointed in my haircut after what was my first and will be my last and only visit to this place! The woman DID NOT LISTEN TO OR UNDERSTAND ME! Several times I indicated that I wanted my hair cut to a shoulder length bob, I even repeatedly gestured to my shoulder and communicated the estimated number of inches to cut. What I got was a chin length bob that doesn't really look even and is waaay too short!!! She started in the back where I couldn't really see and by the time she got to the side it was too late to change. You NEVER pick up the scissors before asking what the cliient wants, and you NEVER EVER start cutting unless you are 110% sure you know exactly what they want! Just moved to area. Desperate for a trim on a Monday when no salons are open. Thought why not as I ONLY wanted a trim. Told the lady 2 inches, showed her exactly how much, she agreed and said that's what I was thinking. She chopped off so much hair, I am still in shock. 4 inches gone. I gues. I had my hair done over there twice. Both times by a very nice lady, Mercedes. First time I was very happy as she spent a lot of time making sure the cut is perfect. Not second time around. I guess they were busier and you just have to do it quicker when more people are waiting... I now have some weird spots of long hair where it's supposed to be shorter and vice versa. If you go, try a less busy time of the day/week. They do accept cards now. read more

I just got what easily qualifies as amongst the top 3 worst haircuts I've ever gotten. The guy who gave me the hair cut doesn't speak English well, so it was hard to know if he actually understood anything I said. I read a previous review that said that they cut hair too short - and boy, it is true! After telling him that I want a medium haircut, he pulled out his electric hair clipper and zoomed passed the hair on my sides and back. When I told him that this feels short, he said "Oh I'm going to use scissors for the hair on the top". Umm, what? Does that even answer my question? The place seems to be super 'X-press', wanting to get customers out as fast as possible. He never spoke a word during the cut. He didn't even offer me the hand mirror so I could see the back side of my head. The part that hurt the most was that in the end when setting my hair, he pulled all the hair to the back with his comb. Clearly he didn't understand that my hair style involves combing hair to the sides and not to the back. Now wonder I got a bad haircut. Sorry, but I'm very disappointed. read more

I ask for Mercedes; she is pleasant and friendly. But not overly-chatty as are those hairdressers who stop cutting to talk, thus overly lengthening the visit. Have had my haircut here about three times and am very happy with the results. They charge me half what I was paying before for the same cut. Without a doubt one of the absolute BEST places I have ever gone to for my haircuts!!!! I first went there over a year and a half ago after my son-in-law recommended them, and the resulting cut was spectacular--in fact, I went to a wedding a week later, and I NEVER received so many compliments on my hair! I like to keep my hair short--and I mean short-- as well as edgy and chic. I've gone to so many salons over the years--including high-end salons such as Vidal Sassoon in NYC--and X-Press Cuts is equal to all of them and surpasses most of them. I do not at all recommend this place. They don't know how to cut hair. Thoroughly unprofessional. Looked like they were cutting for the first time. End result was worst. I had to go to another place to get my hair fixed and aligned. Don't go because it's cheap, the result is much more worse and you'll end up spending more than you expect for single haircut like me. I get this isn't a fancy salon, but when people just don't care about their job or the customer, that ain't right. "You want short?" I responded, "uh, yeah, I would like a haircut. The last thing I told him was not to cut it short and I want to keep my hair in front of my ears and the first thing he does is hack inches off the side of my head. Openly racist. As a well traveled attorney, I have dealt with all sorts of people and situations. It is rare that I am shocked. I cannot recall ever having encountered naked racism, however, so my experience at this place yesterday left me speechless and taken aback. Apparently, there are still people in the world who believe it is okay to tell nonwhite people that they don't serve them. I stepped into this place seeking a basic trim. I never got the words out. As soon as the stylists laid eyes on my short, curly mane, they all exchanged looks of open horror. One stylist, a woman in her 40s or 50s, quickly ran up to me and announced, "No, no, baby, we don't do your kind of hair." I tried to explain that I just want a basic cut, but she kept interrupting me with vigorous shakes of her head and repeated nos. She then grabbed me by the arm and marched me outside the premises. I was too surprised to react in the moment to her putting her hands on me. As soon as she had half dragged me outside, she pointed me to a salon down the block, announcing loudly "THAT is where they do YOUR kind of hair." The salon she pointed me to was called N'Joy and is run by a black woman. I suppose Xpress Cut still believes in segregation? People on the street were staring at me after her declaration and I was humiliated. I am beyond appalled. I hope anyone reading this helps me communicate the message that racism is not acceptable in America by shunning this place. read more

I'm not sure where all these positive reviews came from, maybe from men where a haircut is just a routine for them. As a woman, I had a terrible experience here. The service was awful. I went with me fiance the morning of our engagement party. We had an appointment, he was done on time and honestly got a great cut from the only man working. Leanor took me half an hour late!! Then she left me after washing my hair to finish with someone else, leaving me waiting another 10 minutes. I was so stressed waiting for her because we had a million other things to do that morning. She had quoted me $35 on the phone for a wash, cut and blow dry which is the only reason I went here- when she was done she charged me $55!! I told her that was not what she told me the appointment would cost and she said she had to charge me twenty more dollars because she used a flat iron- which I never asked her to do. I was late and spent way more than I wanted to (which is not easy when it's cash-only) in order to sit in a dirty salon and leave with flat hair. I will not be going back. read more

I have tried all the hairdressers there. And no one knows how to cut hair. They know just one style-cut hair as short as possible. Even if you tell not to cut too short, they all do it. I will never go here again. The lady did the opposite of what I asked her. She lost focus as soon as she saw she had another client waiting for her. I asked her not to take off much length as I was trying to grow my hair and asked her if she could add a little bit of layers or volume at the front part. She ended up layering the back of my hair and cutting it way shorter than I wanted. She did not give me her card or even ask me what I thought. I just moved to Jersey City and was looking for a place to get my hair done. I originally went to a hair salon near by and they DESTROYED my hair! I was mortified, I asked for long layers and instead I got the opposite. My hair does not grow as fast as others so naturally I panicked and walked back home. On my way home I saw this hair salon called x-press cuts. Hoping they could fix it I decided to walk in. I can't emphasize how grateful I am to have seen this place. The lady who seems to be the owner calmed me down and offered me a bottle of water. I explained what happened and asked if there was anything that could be done. This place is actually really great for haircuts! I very rarely get my hair cut (probably have gotten it cut professionally maybe 4 times my entire life) and had gone about a year since the last time because of super bad experiences (isn't that the story for everyone?) I hate making hair appointments because I always chicken out last minute so when I decide to get it cut, I just go right then and there. I called a few salons that were charging crazy prices and waiting time for appointments were about a week. Finally I call this place and I was able to get a spot in 20 minutes. The woman who cut my hair (Cheryl) was a gem. Super delightful to talk to and when I walked in, knew exactly what I needed. A Shampoo, a bit of trim on the length, and cut layers throughout was $40. My hair is curly and so due to the length and damage, I was straightening it all the time. After the haircut, my locks are bouncy again! The one negative is I walked out with wet hair. Perhaps it's a city thing, but I have never walked out of a salon without my hair at least just blow dried (not styled). It was dripping down my back as I walked home. I think a 10 minute dry would have sufficed. Takeaway: Great service, friendly staff, unbeatable prices, and the results are actually good.
