A birthday surprise I'll never forget! This restaurant came highly recommended by a former employee, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. From the moment we sat down, everything impressed us. I tried a mezcal cocktail for the first time, the blueberry mezcal,and it was incredibly unique, smoky, slightly sweet, and just overall delicious. For food, we ordered the corn, poblano tamales, and the chorizo steak burrito. Every bite was packed with flavor. Portions were generous, so much so that we ended up taking leftovers home (always a good sign!). But the true highlight of the evening? The birthday celebration. Our waitress asked if we were celebrating anything, and I casually mentioned a birthday at the end of the month. She smiled and said, "Leave the rest to me." I had no idea what was coming... I stopped into Xalisco in Ogden on a random weeknight around 8pm and was a little thrown off when I walked in and the place was completely empty--no customers, no one at the host stand, just crickets. For a second I wondered if they were closed, but someone eventually came out and seated me. That initial vibe had me a bit concerned, but I stuck it out. I started with the chips, corn, and guacamole, which was decent, nothing mind-blowing but fresh enough and got the job done. The Cadillac Margarita ($20) was a disappointment though. It was basically a glass of ice with way too much lime juice dominating everything; I could barely taste the tequila. The Michelada was better, solid and refreshing, and the service was about the same: friendly and attentive enough once they got going, but nothing standout. But holy smokes, that asada stuffed burrito saved the whole meal. The asada was ridiculously tender, perfectly seasoned, and packed with flavor. Juicy, smoky, melt-in-your-mouth beef wrapped in a solid burrito. That one item alone made me glad I came. Overall, the place has some hits and misses. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was here. The food menu is fairly small but has everything you need. I went with a burrito which was delicious. The atmosphere was super cool. For lighting they have tumble weeds hanging from the ceiling with little lights wrapped through them. And it's definitely going to be where I go for my birthday because they played 50 cent and brought out cake with a huge sparkling candle for a birthday celebration and it was amazing. First let me preference this review with saying, this place is a bar. A bar that has some food offerings. If you go in knowing that it will help. It's an open concept area. It does get loud and pretty busy. We went for a friend's birthday. There is an extensive list of drinks and liquors. I had a few Paloma's and there were plenty of options for shots too. The street tacos were bomb. Birria tacos were great too. They do a big production with sparklers for birthdays. It was a great place to have some fun and drinks with friends. Friend recommended this spot! I was surprised by how good it ended up being. This is a bar so no kids are allowed. The staff was great! They are friendly and on top of it. If it's your birthday they do a special shot out for you. Majority of their menu is drinks! I ended up getting a tamarindo margarita and it was really good! They have tons of different flavors for their margaritas so I'm sure you'll find one that you like! Food Menu is very simple and straightforward. I got the elote appetizer and it was really good! The corn was grilled which made it delicious. As well as the topping of the corn all paired really nicely. It had Mexican cream, cotija cheese and tajin sprinkled on top. You get three corns spilt into thirds, it was a good starter. I then ended up getting Birria taco with cheese. The taco is still soft so don't expect it to be crispy since you got cheese with it. This taco comes with a small dipping consume with it. The next taco was the campechano which is just a mix of asada meat and chorizo. This was okay I think I liked the Birria better. I am so insanely blown away with Xalisco. We got there at 6:15pm on a Friday and it was already decently busy. You walk in and there is lively music playing, it's an open space and easy to navigate, with a bright and fun mural on the back wall. We were greeted quickly, they checked our ID's, and we were seated right after. Our server, Aliccia, was amazing. She showed us where everything was in the menu, and was ready with recommendations when we needed them. Drinks and food were all brought out in good time. We had the Elote corn starter, Asada Burrito, Asada taco, and Birria taco, along with a few different margaritas and cocktails. Drove 30 minutes with the family to try it out and we walk up to the door and it says 21 and over only. Nothing in the paper or online said anything about 21 and up and we have in-laws and young kids with us. Some of the story is on the menu. The drinks are delicious and so different than the normal bar fare. The bartender really knows his stuff. I ordered the Asada burrito, the street corn and the an Asada taco. The taco was the most flavorful but a little small for the $5 price. The burrito was large and a steal for $12 . It had a satisfying texture and temperature - but it was on the bland side. I was hoping for more flavor. The red picante helped - but more flavor in the meat and a home made salsa would have made it better. The street corn came in a healthy portion and had good texture and temperature but alas was on the bland side as well. Too much cream not enough cheese and seasoning. The service was good and friendly and the ambience spacious with more of a bar vibe than that of a Mexican restaurant. I am rooting for this business. They are still establishing their identity. Based on the yelp reviews in the proximity of this place to our hotel we decided to swing by for a couple drinks and a snack yesterday afternoon. When we arrived there was a few folks there at 4 o'clock and we were promptly seated. As previous reviewers have stated this is a bar so you have to be 21 to enter but that being said it's a good thing because they have a really amazing selection of drinks at this location. They also have a rotating monthly drink special menu with some interesting looking options. However my husband and I chose the mango margaritas which were really delicious with nice little chunks of mango in them! He ordered a couple street tacos one chicken and one Birria and I ordered a pork tamale. Everything was amazing! We're from San Diego so we're pretty picky about our Mexican food but this was Mui Delicioso. The only comment I would have is to ask establishment to consider serving chips and salsa or something similar a small side dish of some thing like that would be great. All in all a great experience will stop by next time we're in town. Ok, I feel mixed about writing this review because I knew going in that this was a bar but I did expect a little bigger of a menu. It is an actual bar so no one under 21. They scan your ID just to go inside. We met a few friends for dinner one night and I suggested we try this. I was a little surprised that the menu was as small as it was. The total for our bill was $29. The food was good. I liked the corn and the taco was delicious. The tamale was good but different than other tamales I've had. It was more cakey, almost like fluffy corn. I actually liked it a bit more than the dense tamales I've had. I couldn't really taste the cheese or the pepper inside but the corn taste was good. We weren't drinking so I can't vouch for that but they did have a huge selection of drinks. All in all, the place was good, the service was good but it for sure isn't a place to go for actual dinner. Incredible. Not the food, not the drinks, but the management. I've been here several times, brought friends, and twice my boyfriend took me. We live 31 minutes away. He is 62, and they wouldn't let us in to eat because he forgot his wallet at home. My boyfriend just said, " Come on? Can we eat and not be served liquor?" They said no, and we left. I went back two weeks ago. My ID had an issue. I inquired about it. They said it was nothing. My boyfriend took me on a date tonight. My ID was flagged again, so I asked again, "What's the issue with my ID?" The male bartender said, "We have flagged your ID because YOU were rude to our wait staff." I was shocked. I have never had an issue, and I haven't had a problem. He then said, "Well, it was your husband." My husband has been dead for six years, so it indeed wasn't him. I suppose my boyfriend shared his disappointment over not being able to eat, whether or not we were served alcohol, was the issue. Yes, we get it. Utah Laws. I wasn't going to stay there and discuss it. I told him if they didn't want our business, we could leave. He said, "I don't need your business if you're going to be rude to my waitstaff." We left. If they had an issue, they should have let us know we were not welcome when he spoke up and asked if we could eat without alcohol. They could have let me know when I went to lunch, but they didn't, and I asked! My boyfriend wasn't rude. He was disappointed because he knew I liked the tamales and was upset he had forgotten his wallet. He was upset we couldn't eat, but he was not upset with the staff. If they need to flag customers over stupid policies, that is not the business's fault. They don't need to be in business. He wasn't an ass, but you know who is an ass. Every employee I dealt with at lunch didn't speak up, and the bar manager did tonight. He was aggressive and rude, far beyond my boyfriend's response to their policies. There is a reason this business is always empty. I will never be back, and I deleted my five-star review. This restaurant lost my business for good. I'll be letting those I have brought in know as well. The taste tonight left can not be repaired. I've never had a bad restaurant experience, but tonight sure made up for years of dining out. I found this place by accident. I was looking for some place in downtown Ogden to grab a quick bite before a show at the nearby theater. I liked how open it is and the food was really good. I got a small taco and their special corn dish and they were both delicious. Their bar menu is extensive and my friend had a blueberry margarita and liked it. Customer service was good, especially when the chef came out to let me know my request to have the corn cut from the cob was fine but that meant the corn would be mixed with the other ingredients.
