Great help with my daughter picking out glasses after she had trouble finding something she liked covered by Medicaid/Allkids at another optician. They do have multiple front staff and an optician sat down with my daughter to go through the trays of frames that were covered. Efficiently, the optician picked on possibles to try on (that weren't obviously too big/small) and my daughter narrowed it down to two, and there was a clear favorite. Their staff had been very helpful over the phone, confirming coverage and suggesting when to visit to drop by (since an appointment isn't needed) but that they wanted to manage their customer traffic for COVID. read more

I am NOT going back again! ! I went to Dr. Grinman to get my first pair contact lens. He rushed to finish my exams and didn't pay any attention to what I said to him. I asked him if he had any suggestions of using contact lens, he didn't give me any! I spent only 10 minutes in his office to take the exam and he let me wait outside. While I was waiting outside, he let an old couple in and changed into a completed different person: he was super helpful and nice and kept asking about their eye problems. I was also expected he would let me in again and gave me a couple lens with different brands to fit (my friends told me their experience when their got their first contacts). BUT HE DIDN'T! The front office stuff gave one pair to try on and said they would order 2 boxes for me. I had no choices. The worst worst part was: the only pair they gave me were broken! I had to go back to get new ones. After about two weeks, they called me that my order was there and asked me to pick up. When I got back home, the same thing happened! Most of the lens in the boxes were broken/had fold on it. I had to wait for another two weeks for replacement and went back to pick up. And AGAIN! The new boxed were the same, with most of the lens in it were broken. In the end, I waited for almost 2 months and went back 4 times, ~$100 for exam fee and Dr. Grinman only spent 10 minutes on me. Though this is a small office, there is a good selection of glasses, much better than the selection I had at the Old Orchard Lenscrafters. Dr. Grinman has good taste when it comes to picking glasses, which is funny considering that he has never needed or worn glasses (or contacts, for that matter). In addition to picking out a new pair of glasses, I also tried on ~6 brands of daily contacts over a period of two months. I'm really happy that Dr. Grinman let me try so many brands for a good length of time (he gave me a 5-day supply for each brand) because I have dry and sensitive eyes which responded differently to each type of contacts. Last but not least, the staff were nice, professional, and helpful. If you're looking for a new optometrist, I highly recommend Dr. Grinman. Bonus: this office accepts the vision care discount program that comes automatically with Northwestern's student health insurance, so this office is a great option for students looking for a local optometrist. read more

After a few years of not seeing an optometrist, I came to Dr. Grinman with a couple old pairs of glasses and contacts. He was the one to check me in and take my insurance information as I completed the new patient forms. I was in the chair a few minutes before my allotted appointment time. The eye exam itself was about as you'd expect. He checked the fit of my lenses he asked lots of questions about my contact lens care regime, how the lenses were working for me and if they felt comfortable. I have pretty bad vision (-8.5), so he took his time while I decided whether I could see better with option 1 or 2- I'm really bad at making those sorts of decisions. He also confirmed the prescriptions on my existing glasses and we determined that I didn't need a new pair (but I got one anyway because he had a lot of great frames to choose from and a discount for my insurance plan). I bought a year's worth of contacts and brand new glasses, so while I don't think I'll need to be back, I will definitely return. Dr. Grinman was very helpful, patient and knowledgeable. He even provided a valuable 3rd opinion when my husband and I disagreed over which frames I should buy :) read more

I bought a Living Social coupon online for a pair of prescription glasses and was set up for an appointment right away. Tim, the optician, has great style and actually gave me his honest, constructive opinion - he told me immediately if a frame looked horrible on me. He picks and buys all the frames for the store so he is very knowledgeable about the selection. I'm extremely indecisive, spent almost two hours deciding between two frames, but Tim was more than patient. I would've given them 5 stars, but the front desk was pretty cluttered and disorganized the two times I went, with lunch food and wrappers visible for customers to see. I think they use paper files instead of computer files. My home optometrist in CA was very tech-savvy, modernized, and spiffy clean so that was my point of reference. But hey, whatever works! They are able to run the business well from what I can see. Though I haven't met Dr Grinman, I will be going back for any eye-related issues. read more

I have been coming to see Dr Grinman for at least 6 years. His office is in a great spot--right off the Davis El and Metra stops with easy street parking when I drive. I have since moved to downtown, and I still drive up to see Dr Grinman. I won't even think about switching! He's super nice and friendly, and office staff are great. The selection of frames is better than I've seen elsewhere, and this has actually improved since Tim began working there. Tim is fabulous and will help you decide on the perfect pair (or pairs!) of glasses for you. He is patient and will not hesitate to sit with you for as long as it takes to pick out frames that work for you. He is honest and will not try to talk you into making any impulse purchases. And last Christmas I had a weird eye problem, and Dr Grinman was able to refer me to see an ophthalmologist the same day. That experience--although I was stressed at first not knowing what was wrong--turned out really well. The doctor he referred me to took great care of me and my issue was quickly resolved. Absolutely the worst! Mr. Grinman himself is more an aggressive salesman than an eye doctor, selling overpriced rims and more. Like any sleazy sales outfit they don't mention the true cost of items. They tried to include an extra added "lens coating" without mentions; later saying it was necessary or the lenses would shatter. So they actually sell inferior lenses that shatter unless you buy their "coating?" It's like the old undercoat scam unscrupulous car dealers used to use. They tried to sell me two pairs of very expensive frames presenting no other options. When I finally became so disgusted from trying to work with them that I canceled the order entirely they waited 10 days before cancelling my order completely as they said they would. This resulted in a carried charge on my credit card which won't be refunded until the next statement. Prices here vary depending on which criminal you talk to. I will NEVER go into that eyeglass shop again and take to this venue only now as I just discovered their tardy refund, which should have been completed much sooner. I consider it only good citizenship to warn others away from this business. read more

You will not receive a better customer experience than what is offered from Grinman Eye Care, PERIOD! I've got an odd situation created by a nearly fatal automobile accident that had whacked out my optical nerve, causing a bad double vision issue. I've lived in Evanston forever, had glasses done at many chains stores and had used GEC years ago because he was close by. All the other cookie cutter joints that would use inferior materials just never held up and would scratch and, or loose their resilience. Yet the glasses I'd gotten from GEC were scratch free after years and had become my emergency back up glasses. Fast forward to my most recent experience with GEC and DR. G was patient, caring, and really listened to what I was experiencing with my vision. He had my lenses redone at least a 1/2 dozen times and wouldn't be satisfied until I was happy and comfortable with what I was seeing. Turned out I needed bifocals and he gave me one ot the extra sets of lenses for a backup, AT NO CHARGE!!! I didn't have vision insurance at the time, so he worked some accounting magic to keep the price down to the range that I would have paid out of pocket for the order if I had insurance. Bottom line, Dr. G is the real deal, you need to see and see clearly, because without your vision life would suck. PERIOD! ALL GRINMAN ALL THE TIME!!! read more

Truly a great customer service experience! I purchased a nice pair of sunglasses at Grinman about a year and a half ago, which I recently dropped, breaking the frames. Though the break was my fault and the glasses were out of warranty, Grinman offered to replace the glasses at no charge after they took the time to call the manufacturer and found out the parts to fix the frames were not available. I truly had the most wonderful experience at Grinman Eye Care. I thought that my "Readers" Rx was off, and told my ophthalmologist this. He disagreed, but in all fairness to him, he sent me to Dr. Grinman for a second opinion. Dr. Grinman agreed with me, that the Rx was incorrect. I had wasted 6 valuable months not reading properly. He did the refraction himself, not letting the "techs" do it. He also insists on adjusting the new glasses himself. Several good points. Dr. Grinman let me put my new lenses, from his office, into the new frames I had ordered from For Eyes (do NOT go to a chain store; I found from experience that they are not anywhere near as competent. Cheaper prices, and lower on quality). His store has a wonderful selection of frames,and I'm hard to fit. Working with me over two weeks, Dr. Grinman realized that I needed 3 different pairs of glasses; for reading, for computer, and for distance/driving. This NEVER happened anywhere else. Your eyesight is worth ever penny. I've been wearing glasses since I'm five years old, and this experience with Dr Grinman has been thee most positive ever. Found Dr. Grinman off Yelp. Looks like he ran a Groupon at some point, but I can't imagine why. Staff is professional, well-organized with reminder calls and ease of rescheduling (with the courtesy of no cancellation fee). A lot of providers rattle through their usual questions without really listening to the answer. In over 10 years of having the same minor complaints (dryness with extended use of contacts and allergic itchineds) which every other provider blew off as an inconvenience of life, Grinman suggested an alternate contact as well as a couple of drops to try. I'm a doc and his eyedrop suggestions I've never heard of (nor had any ophthalmology consult ever mentioned) -- but they work like a dream and I definitely prescribe them for my patients with the same issues now. He's super liberal with his samples to try (and my contacts were not cheap!) which was enough to convince me to order some contacts through him even if he wasn't the best price. No worries, he will price match but I didn't even had to go down that route - he was on par if not cheaper than all major retailers including online discount stores. Great initial experience and return experience to recheck how my eyes were doing with the trials. Will definitely continue to see him. read more

I thought that Dr. Grinman was friendly, very thorough and attentive - my only ding would be that the services are pricey. Compared to an average eye exam at give or take $50, my eye exam came out to $100, granted that it was a contact lens exam (not sure if that's worth the price premium). I also didn't realize that the follow-up visit and check for my contact lenses would run another $70 - my fault for not clarifying. Dr. Grinman is a REALLY nice guy. I had quite the insurance fiasco and he was on the phone with insurance company himself trying to see what my options were. Since the insurance company was being, well, an insurance company he offers me a flat fee for the service. If this review was for the doctor alone it would be a 5 but my experience was a 3 based primarily on the unfriendly 2 front desk staff. I don't have high exceptions here but if I walk up to the front desk, hello or I will be with you in a minute is nice. Ignoring someone (you know is there) is pretty unprofessional. I felt like everything was annoying to them and I heard them grumble about someone; I almost walked out at that moment. The store is also pretty outdated looking. I went here for the first time today and had a wonderful experience! I am 8 months pregnant, so they did not do anything major during my check-up, and they were very helpful in choosing a frame that worked well for me. I did feel that the eye doc was very interested in making money, which is why I knocked a star off. He did a retinal photo, which I had to pay out of pocket, and barely gave me a second to answer him when he mentioned we would be doing it. That was pretty annoying to me. BUT, I still give it 4 stars because of the young man behind the front desk- he picked out the BEST frames that I never would have picked myself, and I'm so excited for them to come in! I was very pleased with my visit. Dr. Grinman was very thorough and attentive, professional yet friendly, and gave me good and honest advice when I had choices to make. The man who helps with choosing frames is gifted in picking the right style and shape for your face, I was impressed since I usually have a hard time with that. Dr. Grinman is just focused on selling you items. I have always ordered contacts online because they are cheaper than ordering through a doctor; of course, when I brought that up he insisted I order through them because they price-match-- but there is nothing in it for me since ordering online ships to my door and I don't have to go pick it up. He didn't even give me my prescription and said to contact him directly when I need to order new contacts. His equipment is also not as up to date as my previous eye doctors where I used to live. Not only that, but the outside of the office is a bit sketchy and the office itself is tiny (just a waiting room, a small frame shop, and the patient room). I will not be going back again. read more

Grinman's prescriptions and fittings are the best. My last two pair of glasses (regular and sun) lasted seven years, and I'm not young. And...they were tri-focals. He and his staff work hard to make sure their customers are as satisfied as can be, with both RX's and frames (their selection is awesome). Once, when I had an eye infection, I went to his office and his staff gave me a nearby referral that took me immediately. I have been wearing glasses for 40 years and contacts for 30 years. I have had many optometrists along the way. Some good, some not so good. When I was in high school I would go to Dr. Pinard in Vermont. He was the type of doctor who not only knew his stuff but also knew his patients. A year would go by and he would remember what we had spoken about the year before. Why? Because he cared. He also somehow knew that one size does not fit all. That everyone's eyes are not the same and their is a nuance in correcting eye sight. Dr. Grinman is the same type of doctor. He gets it. Corrective lenses are a dance. He also knows his patients and cares for each one of them individually. My prescription is one of the highest around and its not easy getting it right, but Dr. Grinman got it right the first time both with my contacts and with my frames.
