Blended Pina colada .. It was great!
    Tal O.

Good pina colada, Bad service.. On July 4th the older bartender working the evening shift was a real drag. Not even a smile. Not a crack .. Or a twitch of the lip.. Lol.. Nothing, he was stone faced. I wondered if he realized it was Independence Day! Or that he was working at a hotel bar. In any case he wasn't personable and we are nice people. We had a bad experience so we took our drinks and walked over to the other side. On a positive note they have a blender at this bar and can make you blended slushy drinks. 5 stars for the Pina colada 2 stars for the bartender (he did make me a good drink)

Booths line the edges like polite sentries and the bar itself is lined with slot/video poker machines in case you feel like doubling your disappointment. I arrived with a party of four just 45 minutes before last call on a Tuesday. You would think that would be enough time for a few drinks and a few laughs. You would be wrong. There was a man in a suit behind the bar doing what I can only assume was performance art meant to mimic sabotage. There was a bar back who had the dazed expression of a man recently asked to name all the moons of Jupiter in alphabetical order. The bartender moved with the speed and confidence of a tortoise delivering bad news to a hungry bobcat. Service was a game of drink-by-drink roulette. He took our orders one at a time in the most literal sense. One person would speak. He would leave. He would return eventually with something resembling said dink. Another person would speak. He would leave again. Rinse. Repeat. We might have been speaking in code and he was off deciphering it at the opposite corner of the bar. The drinks were okay. Not good. Not bad. Okay. The menu was fun to look at though. They called them potions. In the VooDoo Lounge. How clever. It was the highlight of the visit and the only reason I gave them a second star. That and the fact that I did not actually die there. Oh and the prices. Nineteen dollars to sip Instragramable mediocrity from a glass shaped like regret.

I entered and made a beeline straight for the restroom because I had to gooo . I quickly discovered the bathroom doors were locked and required a key code. Next thing I know, the bartender, Domingo, starts yelling from behind the bar and then comes around questioning why I was in the establishment. He made it very clear that the restrooms were for paying customers only. I firmly replied, "I plan to dine in, but need to use the restroom first. Is that a problem?" He didn't seem too happy with that response and walked away. As intended, I sat at the bar and ordered wings and truffle fries. The food wasn't particularly memorable, but the wings were a decent size. The truffle fries were fine, but nothing that stood out. Antonio clocked in about halfway through my meal and was a breath of fresh air. He was friendly, attentive, and completely changed the tone of the experience. Overall, it was a good visit with decent food and great service from Antonio. Unfortunately, my first interaction with Domingo left a poor impression and took away from what otherwise would have been a positive experience.

Well, the "Irish Pub" you know from the Monopoly game is actually this real property, "The Irish Pub and Inn", here on St. James Place in Atlantic City. During most of the year, this legendary, 24/7 pub is famous for its unique, memorabilia-filled atmosphere and historical ties to AC, the Monopoly game, prohibition, etc., attracting visitors who enjoy its authentic, home-style vibe. But during Christmas, its decorations are on a whole other level of amazingness. Those fries are like a poutine for those who know. The service is no frills but provided with pride and a smile, always. You can never go wrong here for a quick, basic, and satisfying meal and drink at reasonable prices in good company.

We sat at a table for awhile but finally asked the bartender to request our server. A server came over and said she would let our server know we were waiting. After 20 minutes we decided to move to seats at the bar. The bartenders are the reason for two stars. They were so nice and were constantly checking on their customers. The confusing part is that you can't order food from the bartenders. So we had to wait for a server....ugghhhh! The funny (well, not so funny) part is the server comes over and asks if we were sitting at a table for awhile....when we said yes she said was busy eating her chicken tenders and didn't know that was her section. Just completely laughed it off. So now we were stuck sitting at the bar and still had her as a server. It turned out ok though. Just a confusing process having to pay two separate checks. Then we couldn't use our casino coupons or comps for the drinks. We had to pay with our credit card. The food was ok. The peel n eat shrimp were the best in taste and value. Mozzarella sticks and wings were good. I didn't care for the coconut shrimp tacos. And the funniest thing? We casually asked if the sushi on the menu was any good and both bartenders and the server all said NO. Their expressions said it all. Ha!

Coastal Craft Kitchen & Bar, located inside Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City, managed to accomplish the latter before our breakfast had even arrived. A group of ten educators arrived on a Saturday morning to consume calories before walking around the corner to the convention center. We were greeted promptly and seated without delay. Initially, this felt like a triumph. Then the drama began. While we were waiting to order, a spectacular shouting match erupted between a customer and a food runner. The argument spread quickly, drawing in a server and the hostess. The customer appeared to be the primary author of the hostility. Nevertheless, watching uniformed staff members engage in a loud, public shouting match is an uncomfortable way to begin a morning. It is disconcerting to sit at a table wondering if you have accidentally wandered into the climax of a workplace dispute. Order was eventually restored and the food arrived. In my home state of New Jersey, pork roll is treated with near-religious reverence. I ordered the Pork Roll, Egg, and Cheese, which cost eighteen dollars. What arrived was a small, sad slab of meat and egg resting on a roll of questionable freshness, accompanied by a modest pile of uninspired breakfast potatoes. A neighborhood bagel shop five minutes away routinely prepares a far superior version of this exact sandwich for less than half the price. My nine companions were similarly uninspired by their plates. People understand that casino establishments charge extra for proximity and convenience. However, paying a high premium for mediocre food served alongside screaming matches feels like a poor trade agreement. We were seated quickly, which was nice. But an eighteen-dollar disappointing sandwich and a front-row seat to verbal combat do not equal a pleasant morning. Next time, I will seek my morning pork roll elsewhere.

There are fun decorations, strands of lights, Home Alone 2 playing on the televisions, and much more to really get you in the holiday spirit. I most recently tried the Pomegranate Margarita on their seasonal menu and thought it was excellent; it was not too sweet or too weak. There was a live pianist taking requests, and he was good. Competent, even charming, although his frequent reminders that songs will be played in order of greatest tip to least made us think his salary was entirely gratuity based. He played what people wanted to hear across a wide spread of genres, which is a kind of small miracle. Still, it felt like a watered down substitute for something that once had a pulse. The ghost in the room was Gypsy Bar, which used to offer actual live music on weekends. Closing it was, in my opinion, a small but meaningful cultural error. Now, between B Bar, Long Bar, and this place, the Borgata has achieved a kind of perfectly acceptable sameness. Three bars, none of them offensive, none of them memorable. My wife ordered her usual gin and tonic, a drink that asks for very little and is satisfied when it receives it. I went with a Sazerac, motivated by the presence of absinthe, which I had somehow avoided my entire life. It turns out absinthe does not cause hallucinations, unless you count the fleeting belief that you are having a more interesting drink than everyone else. Still, it was well made and nicely presented, as was hers. Service was slow, which felt odd given that the bar was not especially crowded. Not neglectful, just unhurried in a way that made you aware of time passing. Prices were what one expects in a casino hotel lobby. High enough to remind you where you are. In the end, it is fine. Perfectly fine. You'll probably get a pretty good drink, you might hear a pleasant song, and except for your wallet, you'll leave no worse off than when you arrived. But you may also find yourself remembering something better that used to exist in the same building, and wondering why it doesn't anymore. Four stars, though at least half of one of them is doing a fair amount of emotional labor.
