Dr. Gu is lovely and thorough and professional and a really good doctor. She's been my GP for probably almost 10 years now and I love that she's in the neighborhood and always available and friendly and helpful and someone I can trust. She's had an enormous effect on me, health-wise, not just addressing the stuff that happens like a skin infection on my neck and some cold sores and a gout attack but longer term stuff, too, really sitting down with me and talking about bringing my triglycerides down, which I was able to achieve through changes in diet and lifestyle. Be careful with getting physicals form Dr. Gu. She will order a bunch of tests that are not covered and you'll end up with a $300 lab out of pocket expense! Also, her receptionists don't know how to return calls. I've called 6 times about clearing up a bill and they always say they'll call me back, but they don't. 6 times! And I never hear from them until I call them back. They must not care about patients there- wouldn't recommend her. read more

Dr. Gu is a caring and competent doctor. I have been going to see her for about 6 years. The ladies that work at the front desk are very kind, nice, and make you feel at ease. I cannot say enough good things about them. They return phone calls and e-mails. They call you with results in a timely manner. The wait is very reasonable and they accommodate you as much as they can. Once I got what turned out to be bronchitis, and she was able to see me the day I called her office. Dr. Gu truly feels like a family doctor, she never makes me feel like she is in a rush, and she is very comprehensive on her assessments/exams. I like Dr Gu. I think she is very knowledge, she listens, she is sincere and is very polite. She knows my medical history very well, and she won't recommend treatments just based on profit - I suddenly developed an allergy to egg white - and she said I shouldn't get a flu shot because it contains egg. Rather she recommended preventative procedures, and said let's slowly start to introduce egg back into your diet to see if your body has changed again. When I was sick I called her office (quite late), she still called in a prescription for me. If anything, I have to complain about the wait time. 30 min plus is too much to spend on wait time for me, especially because it's hard to take time off of work on weekdays. Amazing. Really is great to Dr. Gu is a god send to me and my wife. I have been a patient since about 2013, and since then she has done things like give me IV's in her office. When she does that she tells me if I don't feel better I need to go to the ER. It not only saves me money and time off from work, but saves a hospital bed, and the insurance company money, so they do not break my balls over other things like medication, and do not pass on the cost to the consumer (other patients). Yes she is thorough, and will request a lot of blood work, but there is nothing wrong with being thorough. Insurance companies are the problem, not the doctors or nurses in this country who work so hard. .She has an M.D and a Phd, so she knows her sh** and always remembers to ask how I am emotionally and remembers small things going on in my life. She stayed open through the pandemic so I even recommended my friend who is NYPD (and one of the good ones who loves his city), and needed a COVID-19 test to get back to work. His doctor closed during the height of the pandemic, and she stayed open without concern for herself. She does not even use an answering service and provides her cell number instead, and has worked with me over the weekend to resolve medical issues multiple times. She even does her own blood work, and I am a hard stick to get. Also her staff MA, Bianca is really great. She puts up with my unnecessary emails all the time and does it with a friendly attitude.me and my husband. read more

I can only say the best of things about my experience with Dr Gu- I am not very fond of doctors visits like the rest of us. However my wife started seeing her 3 + years ago, and she only raved about the doctor and her thoroughness. I was seeing the male doctor in the same office, however after 1 year it was more of the same, check up basics, no follow up, nothing thorough. I changed my PCP to Dr Gu 1 year ago, and her physical, check up, and pushing me for complete exams and going the extra mile also helped me find a condition I never knew I had. Yes there were many tests requested and performed, but thankfully so since if I did not proceed with these tests my condition would have never been found and left untreated is a death sentence eventually. I cannot tell you how highly I recommend her if you are looking for a doctor downtown. read more

She "forgot" (her words not mine) to send in my prescription for antibiotics for two days. Then she did not return my calls when I began to have an adverse reaction to the antibiotics. When I physically went into the office to pick up a copy of my blood work (she never called me to go over the results, despite - you guessed it - me calling her to ask) I saw that she had not tested my blood for anything I requested she test for. She said I can come back in to get my blood drawn again, but would have to pay for everything... Again. Essentially I paid a doctor to give me high blood pressure. Dr. Gu herself is an acceptable doctor. She will order a bunch of unnecessary tests and want you to be vaccinated for everything under the sun - which if you're into that it's OK. Don't go to her if you're fat because she will make assumptions about your lifestyle that personally I find insulting. I was going to get foot surgery (I needed a GP on file so I could get the surgery) so when she was asking me about my activity and I said I was going kayaking, hiking, walking, yoga, biking, rafting - but not so much now that my foot has really started hurting. Her response to that was 'oh any excuse to avoid exercising' - no - it's a medical condition *I'm going to get surgery for* - were you even listening or just gazing upon how fat I was? After getting poked and prodded and told I was being lazy for having a painful bunion and being fat, *of course* my blood pressure was high. She then wanted to put me on BP meds after *one* high BP reading!!! This from a woman who is anti-supplements and vitamins! She also threw in an assumption that I was eating a lot of fast food and candy - I barely eat sugar and after that whole pink slime fiasco and that Taco Bell employee crapping in the beans I won't touch fast food. But I'm fat. So I must be chowing down on all that stuff, right? Then - the blood panel - when it came back she was super surprised that my numbers were so amazingly good - probably because she saw me - saw I was fat and assumed I was lazy because my painful foot was keeping me from exercising - she probably assumed I'd have all the hallmarks of metabolic syndrome but Nope! No I am perfectly healthy other than the fatness (hint: it's not the sweets and candy that made me fat. It's because I like beer and I can't go on 10-mile hikes anymore with a painful bunion) So my overall experience from the doctor specifically is two stars max. She is a knowledgeable doctor but has horrible bedside manners - maybe she would be a good doctor for you if you are skinny and well-dressed. But this brings me to the one star -- It is her utterly incompetent and unprofessional staff that get zero stars - if Yelp had negative stars they would get negative stars. Ask them to send a fax and they won't send it. I have spent a full two days trying to get them to fax paperwork to my other doctors. I had pre-op paperwork that had to be sent to two doctors. I left *written* instructions. Despite this, neither doctor received the paperwork. I called again and they needed the fax number again (what did they do with the written instructions?) and they still didn't send it! I went over to the other doctor's office to have them call - same fax number - and the receptionist at Dr Gu said 'oh that's not the number I received before' - bullcrap. you just didn't send it. It took a doctor's office calling for you to do anything. Because Gu's office couldn't figure out how to send the fax to the third doctor, I just had my other doctor fax the info to the third one. I had to have a fax with other info sent to a fourth doctor and instead of having it sent with anything indicating it was from a doctor's office, they just sent some random numbers with my name scribbled on a page. Have you even heard of letterhead or a cover page? So I had to call them again - and once again they needed the fax number (are you literate? can you write anything down or is it all oral tradition for you?) and had to *tell* them it needed to have some identifier it was from a doctor. I would like to be able to get my prescription but these guys are so utterly incompetent you cant even get test results sent to another doctor!! BTW, I left a message with the fourth doctor to confirm if they had sent a second fax and *no* they had not. I will have run out of my Rx by the time those monkeys can figure out letterhead and a fax machine and how to do their jobs. terrible. terrible. terrible. read more

First I want to say Dr Gu herself was nice, knowledgeable and friendly. But I agree with one of the Yelpers here - she did order a bunch of unnecessary tests! I went in last December for a standard annual physical, which was supposed to be 100% covered by my insurance. But she ordered like 20 tests and to the point that I am still receiving bills from the lab now - THIS IS EIGHT MONTHS AFTER my tests, just because she ordered so many tests and the lab can't claim to my insurance at once so they claimed multiple times in the span of 8 months! I'm not really against taking test but the thing is she DID NOT inform me whatsoever that I was being tested on those stuff. When she took my blood sample I thought it was just for standard cholesterol etc. When the bill comes the long list of tests really shocked me. There're a bunch of things I've never heard of and when I call my insurance they told me that those tests are only to be done under specific medical necessities... Also, the nurse is horrible. She knows nothing and has a very bad attitude. I will not go back to this place again. read more

I wasn't very pleased. I had a list of things to address and didn't get to a point where I felt comfortable really talking to her. She ran all these tests and it was very weird for me. I also told her that I needed to get started on a weight loss regimen and needed her to "kick my butt" to get me started and she didn't. She doesn't seem to believe in vitamins and also harassed me about getting a vaccine that I didn't want. I tried to call in to get an albuterol refill and couldn't get it without seeing her again....which btw was one of the things I wanted to address the first appointment anyway but never got to. I just got referred to Dr. Gu from a friend. I like her very much!! She is very kind, patient and knowledgable. I'm a new patient, and she asked me tons of questions and documented everything. She did not rush or make me feel uncomfortable. I had some health concerns and she listened carefully to everything I said. The only reason I didn't give her 5 stars is because I had two nurses who saw me before she did... I think one was new, but the veteran nurse wasn't dressed professionally like the new one was. I've seen more professional nurses, but they were fine and the new nurse drew my blood completely pain-free. Also, I was able to make an appointment relatively quickly, and when I got there, I didn't wait at all to be seen! read more

I can't praise Dr. Gu enough - she's kind and patient, listens to everything you have to say and can agree to disagree on things - rare for a doctor. I've been going to her for over 2 years now and she's gotten busier and busier - certainly a good sign! Yet she manages to take time and follow up via call or text and do her best to not make patients feel like just a number. I have been seeing Dr. Gu for 3-1/2 years and I just love her. She is very understanding, compassionate and very willing to help in any way. I really appreciated (one in many instances) that she worked very diligently with me & stayed in personal contact while I was being tested for a horrible intestinal "time is of the essence" infection. Ultimately, she had to refer me to a GI specialist & and he turned out to be a fantastic doctor. The staff is generally pretty good. I did have a very difficult & frustrating time getting a prescription called in to an out of town pharmacy. But, not the end of the world... And as a few reviews indicated-DO be aware of the testing/lab work being done. Normally ALL my lab bills are about $6.00 for annual blood work, physicals, etc. However, I was 'over' tested & had to pay over $100 out of pocket, which is insane for what I always/normally pay. So, do be careful & ask first. However, I did not want for these few things to detract from Dr. Gu's very wonderful care. read more

I was referred to Dr. Gu by a trusted colleague and friend. I have no complains, she always listens and is truly interested in what is going on with me. She was very thorough when completing her physical and in all my follow ups. She will test you for everything when you go for your physical, she will even check your immunizations and vitamin deficiencies. Once you go back, she will go over it with you. The worst doc I've ever seen. The doc does not know what is being covered and what is not being covered by your plan even if she's an in network doc. She just ran all those tests without telling you what tests she did. Most tests are unnecessary. With the form I signed up upfront, I was charged over thousands of dollars by the lab cuz the majority of the tests she did were not covered. And she didn't tell me that on the site at all. The whole thing went on for half a year and her assistants basically changed every 2 months. Each of them just pushed the responsibility to the other and the way they do things is unprofessional. Nothing can really get done. I had way better experience with other docs in the city and no claim issues at all. I would never, ever go visit her again. read more

Just adding to the chorus of people who received surprised lab bills months later for tests she never informed me about, nor checked to confirm my insurance covered them. When I called to complain, one of her receptionists was very rude and unprofessional. After multiple back and forth appealing the bills with my insurance and asking the doctor to possibly forgive one of them, she sent them to collections, thus ruining my credit. Dr. Gu's office has unfairly charged my family for standard bloodwork. Her office, which is run by a bunch of untrained professionals who are more focused on texting and talking on their cell phones are responsible for handling your medical billing. When asking her office staff if we would be charged, they told us no, and then we received thousands dollars worth of medical bills. They will make major mistakes that will cost you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars like it has cost my family. We now have to spend months of dealing with attorneys and the New York Attorney's General office to fight her offices unfair billing practices. Dr Gu herself will tell you to your face that she does not take any responsibility for the office staff who make these mistakes and to deal with them, and basically leave her alone. read more

As another person mentioned, she performs numerous unnecessary tests. Asked the nurses to check with my insurance to see if everything would be covered as I came in for a check-up. They were extremely scattered, unorganized, and unknowledgeable and proceeded to tell me that all was in order. A $1,000 bill later, I find out that the majority of the bloodwork she had me do was not. She was very dismissive with my e-mails and phone calls, even after she agreed to adjust the bill for me and seemed to forget I was her patient. Dr Gu has been my primary care physician for a number of years and only have good things to say. She is extremely comprehensive in her work. While others may complain about extra tests being done, in both mine (and my husband's case) the tests revealed issues that otherwise would have gone untreated. The main problem for me is the very ride and discourteous front staff, but I was also quite surprised at how forgetful she seemed to be, and when I came back fro a follow-up she had clearly not even glanced at my chart before I came in, causing confusion because she was so spaced out about what my health issue was. I'm not impressed by her practice at all. She needs to train her staff to respect patients at all costs, she needs to read a patient's file before seeing them if she can't remember from one patient to the next, and she needs to stop recommending ridiculous adult vaccines without asking questions of the patient and that seem like a way for her to make money. There was no need for any of the vaccines she was pushing once I pressed for some answers about why she recommended them. I will not stay in the care of Dr. Gu. read more

I have been living in NYC more than 15 years. I go to annual physical check up every year and my insurance covers 100% and I never paid from my pocket every time except for the year I visited Dr. Gu. I received the bill after insurance coverage $400!!!! I called insurance company and they said Dr. Gu did unusual labs tests which Doctors usually don't do at a check-up. She did more than 30 tests on me includes HIV, Hepatitis A, B, C without asking me. When I make the appointment, I made it clear it was for annual check-up. I called Doctor to talk but she was avoiding me and I went to her office. She admitted that she gave me bunch of tests without asking me. Their accountant was showing sympathy and told me if Dr. Gu write a note to them, they can look over the bills and make the adjustment. I asked Dr. Gu on face on face but she said she wouldn't do it because it was against her policy. The following year, I went to an annual check-up with the same insurance coverage. Dr. Gu is a great doctor I must say, but the overall staff since 2011 has been horrible. When I first started seeing her back in 2009 she had a wonderful medical assistant by the name of Tilene. She was very personable has very good bedside manners and took blood like a pro. After I found out that she would not be returning I was very upset. The girls that she's had work for her since she left have not been as personable and are very snotty and have attitudes. In my honest opinion it is the staff that makes the office and presentable the doctor's just icing on the top. The staff is the first people you come in contact with so they should be presentable. Again Dr. Freda Gu is a great doctor but her staff SUCKS!. if you don't mind snotty girls and attitude when you call then by all means go ahead. read more
