I needed to get my brakes inspected since I felt my car stopping abilities just weren't up to snuff for these Oakland roads. Had noticed this shop while we were walking towards our pho stop. Seemed like a decent family shop to take my care in. It's located in an inconspicuous area. The owner greeted me and proceeded to address my questions. They charge $80 for a safety inspection and that seemed reasonable since I would never dare take it to a shop fear of getting bamboozled being a female. I knew I needed new brakes and rotors. He honestly told me only the front rotors need replacement since my back rotors are still functional. (If I went anywhere else that's not the response I would get.) They provided a reasonable quote for the replacements compared to the other shops that I got quotes from the area. I deserted my car and 5 hours later my was car ready. Granted that I got no where to go these days my car is running great as expected. I'm definitely coming back for my car needs. We get all of our cars serviced here- european, japanese or american. I haven't had any issues with Simon. He communicates the cost, asks for permission and gives detailed invoicing. He has a quick turn around and uses decent parts. Now, having said that. I understand what type of shop this is. It is a mom & pop auto repair for standard stuff. Some jabroni borrowed my minivan and drove over something and messed up my brakes, and destroyed my alignment. Because of the alignment issue, one of my brand new tires went bald. The brakes were making weird noises. I accidentally drove by Xu's Auto Repair while on another errand and noticed the "brakes and alignment" sign. I did a hard stop and rolled in 2 minutes before closing. New front tires, new alignment, new brakes (rotors and pads) for less than a grand. Woo hoo! The mothership is back in action! All the shop equipment is very new and top of the line. The tires they offer are a little on the economy side, but you can always drop ship any tire of your choosing to the shop and have them installed. Since the brake repair, I've started using Xu's for all my other cars too. Simon does good cheap work, and is tolerant of me stopping by at the last minute with no appointment. read more

My father in law been going to this repair shop for years. He has taken my mini van there for alignment before and left me their business card. So when my other vehicle; a Chevy Volt plug in hybrid had burning oil smell and smoke coming out of the engine, i took the car to this shop. The owner is very pleasant and you can just tell he is honest. It was busy that day and so i left my car there. The next day he called and told me the problem. I asked how much and he quoted me a fair price for parts and labor. I said go ahead and fix it. He said ok and that it'll be done later that day for pick up. Quick and easy. My only minor gripe is he used an after market for the oil cap, but who cares right. It's an oil cap and it's under the hood. This place is now my go to for all car repairs. read more

Needed an oil change on a 2011 Honda Fit. The place across the street was $65 for full synthetic 0-20, this place did it for $45. It's run by an Asian family, and their English isn't amazing, but they were honest and did what they said they would do for a good price. Included was air in the tires and a brake pad check. I brought my mini van in for a four wheel alignment service. They are currently having a special for alignment but the main reason for me to bring the car here is that they recently purchased a brand new alignment system. Even the radio station interviewed them, that's how I found out. The alignment service was two thumbs up. Nobody should pay 120$ for a diagnostic if its just a tire problem . The tire was obvious and he did not tell me after i paid for an alignment the first time i came in . Then stating to me that the pulling to the right is still occurring and that he could not have told me that my tires where down in the front . He told me to drive all the way from home just to see this bad tire (waste of my time) , i waited 40mins while he laughed with his friends just to show me my tires were bald . He seems to use the fact that his english is bad to get you out of his shop after payment . You shouldnt be frustrated with your clients if you cannot speak and explain in english properly that is not our issue it is yours. He just wants your money . read more

I have been coming to this location for years. The previous owner retired and this new owner started his business here. I was worried that I had to find another auto shop for my car since I don't know much about car, sometimes people would take advantage of you. I did try him out for my car serviced. Samon was so great, honest and price is reasonable. I bought a used car for my daughter, the door was leaking when we had the car washed. I brought it in and asked if he can fix it. He spent a good half hour try to fix it. He did not charge me since it was not what he does at his location. The door worked, I saved 1500$ for not replacing another door. This place is a price scam repair shop and the owner Simon treats customers in vulnerable situation as prey in order to get every penny he can out of their pockets. Simon is extremely dishonest & greedy in dealing with me for my car repair. This is a car repair shop you want to stay away and you will save a lot by having your vehicles repaired in other shops. Caution: most of the good reviews were probably entered by friends or relatives. I am a Chinese and I hate to write a bad review of a business run by Chinese because both of us are immigrants, but the great extent to which I am exploited by this shop makes me write one to share with fellow yelpers. My 2003 Honda accord broke down on Sept 10, 2018 when I was in Oakland, CA for some business. I had the car towed to this car repair shop and was told I would get a call for the diagnosis and price quote for the repair. After returning to south bay later the same day, I got a call from Simon and was told the clutch was worn out and needed to be replaced. I was quoted $1150. I immediately knew that this price was far too high because I had the same clutch replacement done for $600 5 years ago in Cupertino. I indicated to Simon that the price was ridiculous and told him that I did not need high quality parts because I would retire my car in 2-3 years as it had 157 thousand miles on it. Finally Simon reduced the price to $900 but demanded cash payment (I hope that he did not demand cash for tax evasion purpose) and said he would order cheap parts. I think Simon knows well that I come from south bay from my 408 phone number and he can charge me much higher price since it is unlikely for me to come back to Oakland and have my car towed to another shop even if I can find a shop that can do the job 2 or 3 hundred dollars cheaper. Well he got me and I agreed to let him fix the car for $900, after confirming with him that the repair comes with 1 year part/labor warranty. Knowing that $900 is still much higher than a reasonable price, I called 4 shops in Cupertino and all of them quoted me prices between $680-$760, not to mention that car repair cost is typically a bit higher in south bay compared to Oakland. How could he quote me $1150 in the first place? Only one reason can explain it: greed. I called Simon back to let me know that other shops quoted me between $680-$760 and it was ludicrous for him to originally quoted me $1150 for the same job. He mentioned that they had started the job and I had to pay $900 no matter what. Finally the next day I went to pick up the car and indicated again he was charging too much. I even dialed one of the shops in front of him to show him that the other shop quoted me $720 for the same job. He was unwilling to lower the price. Knowing that I was dissatisfied, he intentionally did not put the 1 year part/labor warranty in the receipt after I paid $900 in cash. It looks like he did not intend to honor the agreed part/labor warranty if the replaced clutch has some issues within a year. Only after I indicated to him that I was not signing the receipt until the agreed warranty term was put in paper, he printed another receipt from the computer with the warranty specified. He is extremely dishonest!!! I hope by sharing my awful experience in Xu's auto repair with fellow yelpers, you will not be victimized as I was, especially in a vulnerable situation when your car breaks down far away from where you live. You will get far better price from honest people somewhere else. read more

They repaired a thermostat using cheap aftermarket Chinese that didn't work. Check engine light came on and they wanted to replace a fan. His explanation and posture sent the wrong signal. Took it for a second opinion and they right diagnosis was faulty cheap thermostat. Replace with OEM thermostat and been working fine. I called tried to get a refund and never got a call back! They are not trained mechanics. Anyone can buy a scanner and change parts until the right one fixes the problem! read more

Although I just needed an oil change, I will not settle with sub par engine oil or filter. I was assured that synthetic oil would be used per manufacture recommendations. And that was the case. Just picked up my car from this auto shop after seeing the ad on craigslist. I spoke with the owner and a mechanic named Dilic who was very nice the day before to set up the appointment. I have a 2009 Honda Civic that needed rotors, brake pads, tire repair (screw in tire) and an oil change. Picked up the car a few hours later for slightly under $300. The experience overall was very good and much faster than the dealerships and you don't have to worry about the strong service advisor upsell.
