Back in September, another tire shop had told me that I should replace my tires around November. I am a few months late, so I came here, realizing it's close to work. I drove in and parked without an appointment, and someone came out right away to help. I asked him what he thought. He walked around my car, poked around a bit, and checked all four tires. He said that I still have a few months and I can check back in the spring. I was so grateful to have someone not trying to make money off of me but giving me their honest input instead. Never one to gouge on price and he and his other technician Will let you know everything wrong with your car today as well as potential future issues. They will also let you know if it is beyond their scope of service and you can go to the dealer at that point... Where you will get gouged! I got 10 gallons of high mileage synthetic oil on Amazon, and Van charged me 35.00, he also checked my tire pressure and filled up my windshield washing fluid. That was pretty human of him. Don't even bother with the Jiffy Lubes and the Oil Changers, give family-owned and operated businesses your money! Ditto what everybody else has already said. They get straight to the point without all the fluff and will tell you up front what it'll cost you. Came for a full synthetic oil change ($85) and tire rotation ($12) and was in and out in half an hour. They didn't have the right filter for the oil change the first time I came around, but no matter, they had it ready the next day. Got an oil change here for my F150 pickup truck during Covid Pandemic. I called ahead of time to see if they were busy, they gave me an estimate of 30mins. Fast service. In and out in less than 30mins. It was a 2 man operation here, and it's a pretty small shop with 2 spaces for cars they work on. I see 2 car lift machines and another 2 ramp to raise another 2 cars up. I brought my own synthetic oil and filter and it only came down to 25$. They even checked and pumped air for my tires for free! Great little business they have here, definitely recommended. There's also a pretty popular Tacos Sinaloa truck right across the street about 80ft away. If I was hungry I would've totally swung over and ordered some tacos if I hadn't just eaten. read more

Got an oil change here, and not only was Van fast, he alerted me to a leaking problem without pressuring me into pursuing it. The leak was easily explained by my overfilling the coolant reservoir, which was leaking out a vent hose as google and some other mechanics have faithfully told me. The area is a little dodgy, prostitutes hover and an angry man in a Buick hounded Van aggressively about a quote he gave him for fixing the car. There were no less than two taco trucks across the street that I could have feasted at but decided to stay. I really appreciate it when mechanics give you news, but not quotes. Although Van alerted me to a problem, it was easily explained. There you go. read more

Mr. Van is awesome. He is honest and will never try to up sell you on anything. He is direct, to the point and will tell you if you really need to do the repair or if something can wait. He will also tell you if there is something he need that he cannot do, and recommend where you can have your issue address. It is hard to find honest mechanic shops like this place. Van has been our family mechanic for about 20 years I think. All our cars, each family member. I went by today w a dash light on. Van checked it out, reset it, reassured me that the car was safe to drive and performance wasn't affected....and said that should do it. Live like 5 minutes away so it's a short ways away. Really nice on the phone and in person. They told me to come back in about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. Came back in an hour and a half and car was all done. Brought my own tires in and cost me 60 bucks. They have a tire disposal fee of about 20 bucks more for all tires but I disposed of them myself. They take almost all cards and cash. read more

My family and I have been coming to Van's for years. Van is the only mechanic I know that told me that "it doesn't need to be done, you're wasting money, just change the oil and check the tires." Is that honesty or what? The shop is not in the best part of Oakland and it's probably not the most comfortable place to wait for your car. So drop off your car, go have lunch, and Van will take good care of you. Of course, you could pay double or triple at the car dealer, but you'll get a comfortable waiting area, maybe a carwash, and maybe wifi. I rather go to Van's and have a nice lunch nearby i.e. Alameda or new/old chinatown with the money I saved by going to Vans. read more

Good place unfortunately they no longer do smog checks. However they can perform most other jobs with ease. Prices are reasonable. Van himself is there everyday almost and you'll see him wrenching on customer cars. read more

I echo what others have said about Van and his service. I have been taking my car here for oil changes and have always found Van honest and efficient. I am 33. Been driving for 17 years. Lived in 4 different states. I have never been to an auto repair shop that was more righteous, honest, skilled and fair. I simply cannot say enough about this place, its owner and employees. Numerous times I have taken my car in and they have driven it, tested it, and advised me NOT to have unecessary work done and charged me NOTHING for the inspection. As opposed to every other place i've been to that will try and sell you unneccesary repairs, pad hours, etc. And when they do work on your car, its fast (usually same day), VERY affordable, and again honest. They really seem to have your best interests in mind, not all about their own bank account. I am lucky enough to live in oakland so its close to me, but I would concievably drive 1-2 hours to this place if I had to. I would advise everyone I know and Everyone that can hear me here on the web to go to Van's above all other shops. Period. read more
