They told me my Corolla needed a head gasket repair and that it would cost $3k to fix. I took it to another shop to get a second opinion. I was pretty shocked that after a full investigation (and pictures to prove it), there was zero evidence of a head gasket leak. Zero. What they did find was a warped seal under the radiator cap, which was letting in air and causing a rough idle. Cost me $22 to repair. T&T would have charged me $3k for a repair I didn't need, and it still wouldn't have fixed the issue. This isn't the only time they've misdiagnosed a problem, either. One time I told them one of my tire pressure monitors went out. They checked and said it was fine and that the tire just needed to be inflated a little bit. Sure enough, the tire pressure warning came back on a couple days later, so I took it to a tire shop. Not only was the monitor was indeed broken like I had initially thought, but T&T had also inflated the tire to over 65 PSI! Ridiculous. I gave this shop several chances since they are so close to me, but they've messed up badly too many times. Never going back. read more

Came in with a messed up left side view mirror and was worried I'd have to shell out a couple hundred to replace the mirror and the part of the door where the mirror attaches to. Kevin was able to do a quick fix (and I didn't have to replace the side view mirror yay) and I left with a working side view mirror in 10 mins. Last week I had my truck towed to T & T three times. I had explained to the mechanic about my steering wheel freezing up on me. I had no control of it! The truck was about to run into parked vehicles. I used ALL OF MY STRENGTH forcing the wheel to go left. Finally, as it shut off. I waited for a couple of minutes to restart it. I restarted it to properly park it. I had 5 seconds of doing so. Had it towed to T &T. He said that it needed an alternator. I had purchased a new battery that day before it being towed to them. I ended up getting an alternator. They called me to tell me that I needed an oil change as well. Fine, go ahead. I asked them to put in some new brake lights since the vehicle was there. One light had gone out. I wanted all lights to be serviced. I drove the car for one day and the wheel froze up. It stopped on me in the middle of the road. I popped the hood and added a quart of oil. I believe that they forgot to add oil after dumping out the old. Some smoke had came out as though it was dryer than the Arizona desert! When the tow truck driver came he checked out the dip stick and said that it was fine. Not over full. I had the truck towed back to them. The mechanic shouted, "Nothing is wrong." I explained to him again about the steering wheel. He reassured me that it was fine. I drove the truck to Berkeley. One block away from my destination, IT JUST STOPPED. The "Low oil pressure light came on and "Check engine" message appeared. I immediately called the mechanic again. I had the Ford Explorer TOWED AGAIN! He again said that nothing was wrong. But, he did add, "Take a picture of the message and send it to me." I drove the car back to Berkeley. I did not get on the freeway. I had to restart it four times before I parked it. I called T & T to get a phone number to accept my text. I had the business (Landline) number. The mechanic said, "Tow it back. I will check the engine." I became so FRUSTRATED!" My blood pressure was sky high!!!! I sat in the truck and calmed down. I ended up calling Pick and Pull. They came the next day and picked up the truck. My money spent with T & T went down the drain. Every time I took the truck back to them the mechanic would walk pass me (after starting the vehicle) shouting "There is nothing wrong with it!). I would just stand there looking like a fool. I had purchased a new set of tires 4 months ago (1,000). Well, at least Pick and Pull came up. No dent, no scratches, new tires, new brake lights, new alternator, and the DVD player was in EXCELLENT SHAPE. read more

Here they picked up right away! & I also got a quote on the spot Service: to replace a starter for my Toyota Corolla. Price: $350. Later once I called other places the price was the same for at least 3 others. The service was great, friendly, attentive, and fast! Mike the mechanic did a great job. I also got an oil change while at it! Overall I am happy with my experience and definitely plan to go back. Also all mechanics were wearing masks and kept a distance from me when walking around me. I have been in a lookout for a mechanic shop that I can trust and since I do have 4 cars, would love to have a place to go close to where I live. I was initially going to give 5 starts for this place and thought I have found my go to mechanic shop. One day, I drove up, no appointment because coolant was leaking from somewhere and I wanted to take care of it ASAP. They diagnosed it on the spot that it's a water pump. The cost to repair and the time to get my car back were both surprisingly fair that I was pleasantly surprised. I also had a third party warranty that actually covers water pumps and they also dealt with my warranty, which was super nice. It just really couldn't get better, I was really HAPPY. Until couple weeks passed by. The car stalled twice in a one day, one time with my friend and another time on me, needing to be towed. You ask why twice, well, after it stalled on my friend, and with no starting, it was towed back to my house. Car started and drove fine, so it seemed like everything was a OK, and thought my friend was crazy, until he wasn't. Car stalled on a middle of the heavy accelerating and did not start back up. I mean technically it started but dies right off the next second and no power in the acceleration pedal at all. So I had to tow it back home since it was 10 p.m. at night, and no mechanic shops open. After the Google/Youtube advice, the next day, I checked out several things, I assumed of a fuel pump but after knowing to listen for the noise when turning the car to ignition, it was definitely working. Next part was to inspect the air inflow if it needs to be cleaned or perhaps a sensor failure etc. I did not have to look too far. I just took the engine air filter housing cover off and DAMN...WD-40 bottle stuck in front of the MAF sensor. Removed it and no problems with the car. I can only speculate that the bottle must have been moving around there causing the stall and then after one tow, the bottle moved that much that the sensor was working and allowed the car to start and run again but shortly after I guess moved around to completely block the airway. Only possible way for this bottle to be left there was the mechanic who changed my water pump couple weeks prior to when I discovered the WD-40 bottle. So I went to the shop, took my bottle and while I was walking in I saw the same bottles everywhere, so I was 100% sure that they must have left it while they were working on the water pump. To put it bluntly: I understand that mistakes happens and we are not robots. However the shop manager/owner wasn't apologetic at all. She was justifying that the bottle could have rolled there while putting parts back together. Yes, that's most likely what happened but it's mechanics job also to check before putting parts back together that there is no foreign objects or obstruction. I did receive the cost of my and my friend's towing back with the sentence, from the manager "I just want to be done with this" but what about my time and the frustration, waiting for the tow truck for 2 hrs in not in the safest spot because of your mechanics mistake, what about the deductible for the repair that I had to pay that all caused this trouble? I didn't feel like the shop was being apologetic at all. And on top of it, if they were speaking their own language and quite frankly I think she was cussing the mechanic for doing so, because it was rather upsetting voices rather then calm discussions. Any business can and does make mistakes, no one is perfect and I totally get it as a business owner myself but please OWN IT! I left the business with the refunded receipt regards the towing costs but I felt like I was the one who had done something wrong. I have not contacted the Bureau of Automotive Repairs but I'm thinking of doing so. read more

Had been away for a week with my 2009 Prius just sitting in my driveway. Drove to meet some friends for a hike and lunch and the car was acting funky. Dashboard instruments (speedometer, gas gauge etc) went black. Radio died. Couldn't turn car fully off or remove key. Went to my normal mechanic, who was closed this Saturday. Found T&T Auto Repair nearby on Yelp, dropped by and was greeted by a female mechanic. Another mechanic came out with some portable diagnostic device, then I took a seat on a bench by the office. 5 minutes later he told me it's fixed and ready to go, no charge. What a relief! Sounded a little odd to me but the lady who works there who I've met in person many times or many, many years said they don't work on them anymore. She was apologetic but offered no explanation as to exactly why. Called back, since I remembered it was just over a year ago I had work there, and spoke to Mike who confirmed it. Fixed the issue for $100. Was that an honest mistake? An isolated instance? Or are y'all just shady and trying to take advantage of people? I needed a simple repair, replace driver side mirror, and estimates for timing belt and radiator. My car is 2001. I called first. Didn't need an appointment. When i arrived, their lot is filled with cars everywhere. The office is old and small. But clearly, the office manager has been doing this for a long time and knows what she is doing! She was pleasant and efficient. They told me to wait. In a very short time, they had my estimate for the window, and it was fixed in less than 30-45 minutes. Soon after that, my estimates were complete. They were very fair, and more fairly priced than other mechanics, and of course the dealership. They couldn't do the repairs that day but said I could make an appointment to return. I have decided to sell my cat so i wont be getting additional repairs. Mike fixed the transmission on my Aerostar two years ago. I am now 500 miles away. The transmission is going out again, and this time, the van will be traded in. There is no T&T Auto Repair in remote Nevada. So Pick and Pull finally gets the Aerostar. The locks do not work; the transmission skips; the odometer has been broken for a long time; I tried so hard to reach 400,000 miles. Mike is not available to keep it running. read more

T & T was my 2nd choice, but my 1st choice didn't have availability until after the weekend. I was having issues starting my car and thought my starter was going bad since I still had power from the battery - all my lights turned on fine etc. There was another review that mentioned other lights turning on after they service your vehicle. Right after i drove off the lot, my SRS light turned on. After taking it back, they resetted the light for me. I hope they didn't steal my airbags. I start my car the next morning and I'm still having the same starter issues. Not good... now i have to worry about bringing the car his shop and I could just imagine the problems he'll come up with and put me in a position to pay for more services. We shall see... Update 10/12/2015 Decided to purchase a new battery before bringing the car back to Mike at T&T Auto Repair and now my car starts great. Not sure if I really needed a new starter yet, but I learned that Mike doesn't really look for the best interest of his customers. Kevin was amazing! I had bent my side mirror and the underlying metal was warped too. This lot is very small and crammed with cars that obviously haven't moved in years. Reminds me of the junkyard. Anyways... I'm sure they're okay for small stuff, the owner is indeed a nice guy, I just would not recommend them for larger stuff. They changed the timing belt for $250 plus $300 for a clutch, yes a fantastic price. The car broke soon after due to a clutch position sensor broken on the timing belt job. I paid another for $250 for 2 sensors for them to replace it, but not labor since it was warranty work (yes, some shops would not have tried to honor this). I left work early to come all the way down to pick it up. The car wouldn't even move, it was a wasted trip, grr. After returning two days later, the car worked, but ~1000 miles later and moving down to SoCal it seized up again. We went to a different mechanic. It was the clutch position sensor. After $1200, I was handed the sensor I'd recently paid for, which was not new, but clearly 5+ years old, bent and oozing goo on the side. It's an electric sensor, they don't get bent in use. I don't know what car this part had been ripped out of, but it was embedded in on the other side of 8 hours of labor. It doesn't end there. 12,000 miles later the clutch seized up in the middle of nowhere, the car leaked fluid on the highway. Thankfully it wasn't the clutch, just the clutch line which had melted because it had been misplaced so that it was touching a part which heated up. The mechanic pointed out that even though Honda uses rubber lines, the line had been placed improperly, and Hondas shouldn't break this way. Thankfully this repair was only $150, two tows (one 70 miles), and involved getting stranded for a day and a half. I should have paid more to have gotten the work done right at a good place, like Campus Auto in Berkeley. That place costs more, but is awesome. I ended up paying way more for T&T's low prices, not just in money but lost time and pain making up for the clumsy work T&T auto unleashed on our car. Yes, the owner is nice. Some of the guys that crack open your car, though, are inexperienced, and I would advise against getting complicated work done here. I'm sure the owner lost money on the job with me, then I lost way more on it later. These things happen and are part of owning a business, he handled it with more care than many would have. At the same time, this place broke my car, charged me for a crummy replacement for what they broke, then installed it deep into the car. I was later stranded and had to pay a lot to get to that part to fix it, then stranded again. I wouldn't do that to a stranger, let alone a friend. read more

I had my 1990 Aerostar towed to T&T Auto Repair when the transmission was stuck in drive. The first thing the owner said was "Aerostar transmissions usually do not last 350,000 miles. It might be time to consider upgrading the van to something that is less than a quarter of century old." I asked for a quote and he said he could replace the transmission with a 30 day guarantee for $750. Two weeks later, the van was back in service with a test run of 500 miles to Tahoe and back. Works well. Then Aerostar now has 10,000 miles on the transmission and it runs well. I will have to take the Aerostar back to T&T next October for a pre-smog tuneup. Mike understands that the Aerostar is paid for, and the cost of ownership is registration, gas, and repair service at T&T Auto. The AC Transit Broadway Shuttle is two blocks away, so I took the shuttle to Uptown and spent the day at the office. The Broadway Shuttle is FREE to uptown Oakland, with access to BART and most AC Transit lines. It now has been a year, with another 50,000 miles on the Aerostar. I took it in for an oil change and the owner was curious how the transmission was working. When he checked the milage, he was surprised that I had driven another 50,000 miles. At this point, it is being tuned up for another year of service at 6,000 feet elevation. I wonder if I will see 450,000 miles on this vehicle? read more
