What stood out most were all the thoughtful personal touches. They made an exception to host all four of us for the tasting (when normally they just allow 2) and even prepared a special yuzu salmon for us as those were our favorites. You can really tell how much care and creativity Raphael, Mike, Michi, and the whole family put into what they do. You can tell Chef Monmon takes great pride in her craft and has a commitment to wholesome ingredients. Many of the herbs provided were hand grown from her garden. She also believes in providing clean meals. One of the dishes, for example, included green beans cooked with reserve osmosis water (triple filtered purified water) aka the cleanest most delicious green beans I've ever eaten! Ordering via their form online was simple and easy and I received plenty of communication leading up to the pickup on where/when to pickup and who to contact for any changes or concerns. The pickup spot in San Mateo is a ghost kitchen setup, and parking was a little difficult (I got dropped off while my ride circled around). Once inside, there are a few tablets as well as doorbells labeled with different businesses. I pressed the one labeled for the backhouse and got our order at the door after waiting for a few minutes - there do also seem to be a lot of people picking up delivery service orders and generally seems to be confusing for the other businesses in the same space but I was able to get in and out pretty quickly. Onto the sushi - everything was delicious and they were kind enough to give us 3 of everything as I had requested to make it easier to split between our party of 3 which I really appreciate. The rice was nicely seasoned and not over or undercooked, and the standout has to be the uni. I really liked the asortment of fish/topping combinations and felt like there was a good mix of unique offerings and classics but the one thing I wished we had was some kind of guide or lost of what the fish we had were so I could better appreciate what I was eating. Overall, I'm glad I finally got to try the Backhouse and it was definitely tasty and a convenient way to enjoy some really high quality fish, but I think personally I prefer having the fish in a way where I can know more about what I'm eating to really enjoy the meal :)

While the food eventually arrived, the experience leading up to and during the event was fraught with unnecessary stress. Initial communication was great, but it trailed off as we got closer to the date. Despite their "quick response" phone number, my calls and texts went completely ignored. To make matters worse, the voicemail changed from a personal greeting to a generic one 72 hours before my event, leaving me terrified that we had been scammed. We increased our headcount from 65 to 75 a week prior. After being told this was fine, I was sent an incorrect invoice that ignored the new guest count and asked for a second $300 deposit I had already paid. It took multiple follow-up emails just to get a confirmation on the final numbers. On the day of, the staff arrived promptly and set up on time. However, only 30 minutes into service--with only 30 of our 75 guests fed--they completely ran out of cilantro, onions, and grilled peppers. When I followed up the next day, they claimed they prepared for "70 guests." Even if that were true, it wasn't the 75 we paid for, and it certainly doesn't explain running out of basic toppings after 30 people. I'm incredibly glad we didn't use them for our wedding last year as originally planned. It's disappointing when the service doesn't match the reputation. 2 stars for due prompt service and the guests that got all the food really enjoyed the steak & shrimp.
