Our AirBnb had an outdated take-out menu so we gambled and ordered a bunch of take out (sushi, lomein, curry, crab Rangoon) ALL of the food was incredible and they honored a coupon on the outdated menu we had. Would never expect to find such a gem in Ashburnham, MA, but if you are in the area search for great Asian cuisine and the friendliest staff, look no further. Like many others in the area, I was very excited to see a restaurant that serves sushi and other Japanese cuisine open up nearby. Nestled on Main Street in Ashburnham this quaint restaurant is a great addition to the local vibe. The inside of the restaurant is small, at some points cramped, but the lack of incredibly busy nights means the building is never unpleasantly packed. The aesthetic is exactly what you would expect from a restaurant of this style and caliber and everything about the vibe is enjoyable. As far as food goes, I typically purchase the same sorts of food and have ordered these to go nearly exclusively. As a person who truly enjoys sushi, whether nigiri, maki, sashimi, or some of the more decadent rolls, I usually can establish my opinion on a restaurant by a couple of things. First, I order a tuna roll; nothing special about it, this roll will simply establish a basis with which to appreciate the rest of the order. I was happy with what I received: the rice was beautifully seasoned, the fish tender and flavorful. Secondly, I order the tuna nigiri, or maguro, to get a better idea of just how great their cuts are. I was again happy with what I received. The tuna was perfect and the portion was fair. I highly recommend the spicy tuna roll, which I recognize is a cliché order for most beginners to sushi, but this roll sets the bar for me as to what spicy tuna rolls should taste like. Next, I ordered the scallop hibachi plate. I usually don't order hibachi because of the price and this location was no exception. For those looking to watch the hibachi show of the food being prepared, the food is not prepared in a theatric way as in other locations which specialize in hibachi grilling. The scallops of the meal were phenomenal and were cooked perfectly; they developed a rich flavor to compliment their natural flavor profile, and managed to stay soft in texture while also gaining a degree of crust to the cooked surfaces. The rice that accompanied it all was also well seasoned and the portion size was very fair. As far as other fare of the restaurant goes, they offer things you may not find at a lot of local restaurants doing some of the same cuisine, but for the most part it's a lot of your expected selections. This isn't necessarily a detraction from their success as a restaurant, it just merely states that no one will be blind-sided when you look at the menu. I found my family members a bit confused when they couldn't find certain American-Chinese staples in the menu but everyone in the end found the food to be enjoyable. I rate this location 4 stars because I come here quite frequently and I never end up displeased with what I receive. My usual order includes the tuna roll combo (big surprise there) and a Kani salad (a spicy crab meat blend with finely cut cucumber and Panko crumbs). The order fills me well and it's roughly $20. They fall short of 5 stars simply because the portion sizes and prices don't seem to always match up. There are a few dishes on the teriyaki menu that seem to be of lighter portion yet the price stays in the high 'teens. The sushi is also a tad bit more expensive than competitors but I would argue the quality justifies the small difference. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Went in to sit down for an appetizer and to get some takeout for dinner; was the only one there. Ordered crab rangoons, which were disgusting, chewy, and greasy on the outside, so it was hard to appreciate the filling. Although I did not eat them, I was charged for them anyway and was told that since 'everyone else likes them', that I had to pay. I left them behind. I brought home my eggplant and garlic entree, which was actually green peppers, eggplant, and garlic, in that order. White rice was included which was nice. Dark, dirty place, with one employee watching a movie in the back, one watching a concert at the bar, and one listening to music behind the bar. I got up to leave when the one at the bar stood up and began to burp. Obviously I was there at a very bad time. read more

Absolutely, freaking, amazing sushi, and if, like me, you like your seafood cooked, there are clearly market menu choices. You will not notice this place and likely not be looking for a sushi restaurant with this caliber of food and presentation on sleepy Main street in Ashburnham, MA, but you must GO FIND IT. The restaurant is small, but perfectly laid out with a sleek seating bar with the most comfortable chairs I have ever sat on and tables of various sizes placed around the long, narrow dining floor. My SO - a huge sushi fan - heard of this place from a co-worker, and we planned a hike in the area around the restaurant. He ordered the sushi chef's 12-piece option and, as I don't eat sushi, ordered a vegetable noodle bowl. Take a look at photo I'm adding here of this noodle bowl. Flavors were unbelievable. We also had steamed dumplings which were the best I have had and I am a huge dumpling seeker. The dough on the dumplings was thin and light. We also had a tempura plate that used large, fresh veggies and shrimp with the lightest tempura layer I have ever seen. Everything was delightful, authentic and soul-warming, right down to the tableware and beverage options (beer, wine, Asian beverages, popular sodas, etc.). Dessert for us was fried banana. I can't do it justice with words. There was a side of crumbled peanuts, seasoning and we think a seed of some type - sort of like a dusting of flavors - on the desert plate to sprinkle on banana. I could have eaten a dish of that dusting stuff alone. Place is clean, clean, clean, cozy, great waiter and sushi chef, and, even the little bathroom is beautiful - what you would expect in some New York yoga studio. Make the trip people. Headed here today after hiking Mt. Watatic. My boyfriend and I ordered two signature rolls and got another roll for free! The sushi was so flavorful and fresh! Steamed pork dumplings were light and delicious! Very small inside but nice atmosphere and the waitress was super sweet and helpful! I am so disappointed with the way that this restaurant is going. Tonight I ordered the spicy kimchi and seafood noodle soup. I have ordered this soup in the past, and it's been absolutely delicious and fresh and packed full of seafood and vegetables. However, tonight I have received my soup with spaghetti noodles, there is absolutely no kimchi whatsoever, the flavor is bland and very watered-down. I am whole heartedly disappointed in this restaurant and the amount of money I spent on this dish. read more

We ordered takeout this afternoon and it was excellent. The spring rolls were crispy and flavorful without any greasiness, the steamed shumai were great as well. The seaweed salad was lovely and fresh, as was the yellow fin and cucumber roll and the Rock & Roll. The restaurant is cozy and spotless and the wait staff was friendly. Will definitely return. Yaks Sawa is one of my favorites! Everything I have had here has been really good. The crazy roll, California roll and vegetable spring rolls are my favorites. My husband really likes the fried rice, however it is a bit overpriced for the amount of food you get, so we don't order often, but when we do it is always yummy! read more

I stopped tonight to check out this restaurant. My first visit. I had an excellent Singha beer at their very nice little bar while waiting for my take-away order of one large special roll (Tuna, eel and chef's sauce) and a spicy tuna maki. Polite greeting and fast service. My impression was clean, quiet and organized. Preparation of my take-away order was exactly the duration of a single beer. The sushi proved to be excellent. Listen, the sushi _is_ good - the customer service is not. When you order a rice dish as 'chicken only' and they make it with the shrimp and then give you a chicken lo mein because they can't understand what your asking, that's a problem. When you notice that there's shrimp in the rice, and all they do is go out back and pick the shrimp out, that's worse! When you get home an notice that this is what they did, then you're just furious. So... be very careful with take out, if your asking for anything that differs from the menu. read more

We went on a date here. The food was alright, however the service was really slow. Our orders got taken twice, because the first waiter took orders from two different tables at the same time and then forgot about us. Also, my food came about 10 minutes earlier than my girlfriend's food and I was done eating by the time her food came. I ordered chicken teriyaki, which was literally just one tiny piece of chicken with plain sauce and five spoons of white rice. I left still feeling hungry and would not go back again. read more
