I can't believe it's been over five years since I reviewed Yamato. I eat here about once or twice a month and I have nothing but positive experiences here, both with food and the awesome staff. They are always lightning quick and friendly!! I don't think the decoration has changed much over the years, and its still a dimly lit cozy place for dinner. When I realized how long it had been, I KNEW I had to order a small feast for the wife and I. Bubble Milk Tea (Coconut) - this drink doesn't factor into my rating of the restaurant. I know that most places that aren't dedicated to selling Boba/Fruit/Milk Teas are just going to sell mediocre instant powder mix drinks. with that said, I love everything coconut and I was a happy boy with my drink. I especially loved the large size which made the $9 cost easier to swallow since that's the same price I'd pay at a Gong Cha. Miso Soup - wife and I order this EVERY TIME. of all the places we've tried this, this place consistently serves our favourite. of course this is very subjective since Miso Soups can come in so many different concentrations, and the miso section in H Mart will show you how many flavor varieties this soup can come in. Gyoza Soup - the clear broth is very refreshing and stays nicely in the background to let the gyoza be the star; which tastes just like I would expect. yummy pork in a soft, broth-soaked wrapper. I personally think the ratio is a bit off and there should either be less broth or 1 additional gyoza in the bowl, because it seems a little imbalanced with so much broth. Seafood Salad - this is a perfect size serving that doens't ruin your appetite for the main course. nice ratio of crab meat, squid, shrimp, etc. it actually comes with a drizzle of Sriracha (or some hot sauce) already drizzled on top and it was a perfect complement to the salad. Holiday Appetizer - it's imitation crab meat and cream cheese wrapped up and fried. it's delicious and indulgent and it's served on a small bed of greens. I love getting this app every now and then. Honey Sandwich - I'm not a professional sushi reviewer with delicate taste buds. all I can say is that these little triangle bites are splendid and full of filling. Salmon Avocado Roll - uhh this needs no explanation. wife gets this every time and loves it. happy wife happy life. Tempura Ice Cream - this place sells one of my most favorite fried ice cream. the tempura batter is lovely and crispy and it actually encapsulates most of the ice cream. it's a must-get if you have a sweet tooth. this is NOT like other places that either do a cakey batter or they lazily top off a scoop of ice cream with corn flakes. this place is very close to the real deal experience I get in Boston. read more

I've been here a few times and the service is always been very good. Not sure what was going on this time. Seem like they had one waitress for the entire place and she was overwhelmed. The simple task of a large flask of sake with 2 cups with a flask was an effort in itself. It took four takes to do this and me getting up and asking for a 2nd cup to get it correct. Food was decent. Of course this place is very close quarters. Not really a fan of being sat in the hall way, but if you're coming in with just two people expect that. Unsatisfactory overall for this visit. read more

Unsatisfactory overall for this visit. The waitress was new perhaps. She handed me a lunch menu but informed me lunch had now ended, gave me a different menu with higher prices. The green tea had a taste that was unpleasant. I have had green tea before but this was weak and bitter. I ordered medium rare teriyaki and waitress wrote " beef teriyaki" but forgot to write down the medium rare part . Soon after the order was placed the cook asked how it was supposed to be cooked. Someone said " medium". That is what I received medium. I told the waitress, she took the entire plate, of meat , rice and broccoli back. Returned with very rare beef teriyaki. I sent it back again and it came back correct. However, it had original vegetable and rice that were lukewarm. I think the cook was unhappy , that meal was returned several times. Later on that night , I felt stomach ache. I vomited up the entire meal and also had diarrhea. Maybe it is not food poisoning , but it sure felt like it was due to the timing. I googled it and those are the symptoms of food poisoning. I am hoping it is a stomach flu because Yamato has a good reputation. read more

Absolutely love!!! The atmosphere of the restaurant is so cute with Japan themed lanterns, cute Sanrio decor & other Japan cultural themes. The staff that served my friend and I were incredibly polite and knew their menu well when we asked questions about different items. & they were extremely accomodating; its what made part of the experience so great. I also loved the unique names each lunch special had, everything exceeded my expectations & I had such a great time. I ordered the Miso soup & the Monster roll. My friend got the Sweetheart roll. We shared the Beef Negimaki- which was my first time trying but it was amazing! Her favorite food ever!! The owner or manager, unsure. Came by and was very welcoming. He chatted with us and learned it was her birthday. He brought out special deep fried Oreos for her. WE have been getting food from Yamato for a while now, and I decided to try something different. Their California salad says it has crab, but when I get the salad it is fake crab, which is usually pressed together pollock with other ingredients. As far as I know, if it says crab, it has to be crab, or it's fraud. Also, in the rolls that I got, it also has the fake crab when they say otherwise on their menu. Not great! read more

Tonight was my first time visiting Yamato. It will not be my last. We started off with the spicy tartar, it was AMAZING! We got a mix of everything including the bento box, sushi, and hibachi meals. There wasn't a bad meal had by anyone. It was absolutely delicious. The service was amazing. Our waitress was prompt and very friendly. Yes it's a bit pricey but what sushi spot can you get rolls under $13 nowadays. The sushi is fresh and delicious! and service is always fast. I had the coconut bubble tea for the first time today and it was so good!! I'm rolling home at how much we ate. It's not much to look at from the outside, but once you start eating you'll wonder why it took you so long to come in. They don't have too many tables, but meals move quickly. I really enjoyed coming here despite it being in a disaster of a parking lot with many pot holes. I got sushi when I came here and it was awesome. They supply soy sauce as well which is a must. They also sell other food other than sushi in case that's not your thing. The service at this place wasn't bad at all. The day I went it was 6° and it was very windy so it probably was even colder so it was pretty dead at the restaurant. The waitress was great and wasn't all over us the entire time. Then pull in to the parking lot, cal that I'm there and they place the food on the table where I pick it up and sign my receipt and place it in the bucket. Completely touch less! The food is delicious! I got a Hibachi vegetable meal that comes with soup (we got Miso because I'm vegetarian) and salad. Plus rice and tons of hibachi vegetables. I also got a cucumber avocado roll for myself. My husband got the Vegetable Sushi Dinner which looks AMAZING! The presentation is beautiful. This is our second time in like three days. Ouch! Expensive and NOT worth it. This was our first time here...and certainly our last time. We normally go to the hibachi grill at Chopsticks. Not exactly a classy joint, but always good. I ordered filet and scallop and it was relatively tasteless and dry. I suggest having water with dinner- the drinks add up. My wife ordered an ice tea ($5), my son a Boba tea ($8), and I ordered a Japanese soda ($6)- which was like an 8oz bottle. I've been for a quick lunch here many times since I moved to the area. I love the food so when my neighbor/friend's birthday came up and she wanted sushi it was the first place I thought of. The atmosphere is modern and clean. The staff is lovely and attentive without being overbearing. We are both light eaters and we only ordered the sashimi appetizer, the Yakimaki Roll and the Ocean King Roll. I called ahead and made a reservation and mentioned it was my friend's B'day. They came out and sang and brought a sharable fried ice cream with a candle in it. We had a lovely evening. Yamato Japan is absolutely the best sushi, hibachi, bento box, etc restaurant in Central MA. The staff is empathetic, courteous, and treat repeat customers like "family". The servers can remember your favorite order from the last visit, including drinks and meals. The owners (Joe & Annie) care about their patrons and will freely chat with you about your family and/or their own. They are dealing with Covid 19 restrictions as appropriate. Even their restrooms are immaculate! I could never truly express how wonderful this place is, but please try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. read more

Sushi rolls were just like any other sushi rolls (nothing special), we had the California Roll and the Fried Tempura. We also ordered the hibachi steak fried rice (which did not have seasoning) the steak was plain with no flavor) so we were just ok but no big shakes.
