The chicken and mushrooms were also okay. The bento sets came with paitan (白湯) soup when you eat at the restaurant. The environment inside is very nicely decorated in typical Japanese izakaya style. Pretty decent taste and value, but save your money for a more premium establishment that uses binchotan. I went here on a busy Saturday night and had a fairly good experience considering pricing and relatively rarity of finding an outstanding yakitori place. I was initially impressed by the value factor, but when eating yakitori, I ultimately would prefer to pay more for better quality. * yakitori edomasa set The skewers were decent. The wing was pretty salty due to the miso glaze but tasty (and would have been fantastic with a beer). The tsukune was a little dry for me, but at least it was huge. It was also lacking the egg for the classic combo, but given this is basically a "value set", it makes sense that it's not included. The paitan in particular stood out and was rich and full of flavor. It might feel a little heavy to some, but I really enjoyed it. Hatsu was pretty good, didn't have a strong offal taste. The veggie dish and rice were also nice and appreciated as being somewhat novel to me. * bonjiri Tasty but the pieces were smaller than average. I prefer bigger plump pieces, but I realize that it's also difficult to remove the bone and cartilage during prep. * asazuke More strong and salty than the lightly seasoned vinegary type. While I would have preferred some sour and refreshing crunch, this was still pretty tasty and paired nicely with the rice. Would get again. Overall, the food was fairly good, somewhat cheaper than other places but also somewhat lower quality. Aside from the paitan, there also wasn't much "wow factor" like "this is really juicy and perfectly smoky". Upon doing some research, it looks like Edomasa uses electric grills and not binchotan. Malls have different fire codes and ventilation so that makes sense. Given that the restaurant had a busy dinner service, the quality dipped a bit while they were preparing skewers en masse compared to a less hectic weekday lunch service. While I still stand by the food being pretty decent, the chicken was a tad overcooked across the board and not as hot as I'd like. One last thing to add, some other places will advertise what farms they're getting the chickens from or the breed e.g. Jidori which also serves as another quality indicator. read more

Overall I thought the skewers were pretty good and reasonably priced! For 9 dishes it was $30 pp. I liked the chicken meatball, the scallop, miso cod, and the chicken thigh skewers we got. I wasn't a huge fan of the pork belly ones (too salty) or the steak (too chewy). Salmon was okay but didn't wow me. The chicken wings were good! I liked how it wasn't too fried. The plaza has so many options for dining and I'm slowly eating my way through! It was my first time having Japanese skewers and I must say I'm a big fan. The ambience inside was so moody and intimate, which is a nice hideaway from the many busy things to do/see inside the plaza. As soon as we sat down, I immediately felt relaxed. It was a busy day yesterday in Japantown for the annual cherry blossom festival!! Every restaurant was packed, but luckily this restaurant had a reasonable wait time of 20-30mins. At first I thought the menu was pretty small but then I realized I'd be getting a bento box full of food. I came in with a party of 4 and we all ordered the same thing, and each of us ate everything! The rice was perfectly soft and fresh, the soup was subtle but delicious, the salad was refreshing, and all the meat was cooked perfectly. I never order pork belly because it's too fatty, but this one was slightly crunchy and grilled. The steak was a perfect medium rare, and the chicken was also grilled nicely. Even though you only get three small skewers and two pieces of karaage, it's the perfect portion. We also enjoyed the high quality matcha iced tea. read more

Came here for lunch and joined the Yelp waitlist upon arrival. It was a Saturday afternoon so there was a little bit of a wait, but not too bad. We didn't realize it was in the mall before we had arrived, but being able to walk around helped pass the time. We were super excited to try out all of the different Yakitori options, but in order to do so, you do have to get a set at lunch, and then can order extras a la carte. We hadn't planned on getting all the extras because we really wanted the skewers, but we were able to share one meal, vs having to each get our own, and then could order all the extras our hearts desired. We went with the Deluxe teishoku, which came with rice, slaad, choice of appetizer, and 5 skewers. For the app we went with the chicken Karaage. We ordered double of some of the skewers so we could each have our own, and then shared a couple too. The momo and pork belly skewers were my favorite, and my boyfriend liked the beef and pork belly. Unfortunately my beef one was cooked a little more than his. Neither of us were a huge fan of the salmon one, it was a good portion, but the others were better to us. Tara (Miso Cod) 7/10 - The miso cod was soft and tender with a great texture. The lemon added a nice acidity, but the overall flavor didn't stand out much, making it slightly underwhelming. Miso-Ra Buta (Pork Belly w/ Chili) 8.5/10 - The pork belly was very tender and not chewy at all. The miso and chili oil combo gave it a rich, savory flavor. I would definitely order this again. Shiitake Mushroom (6/10) - Nothing too special here. A typical mushroom skewer with light seasoning. Unagi 9/10 - One of the best bites of the meal. The eel had a sweet, smoky flavor and tasted very fresh. Sagari (Hanger Steak) 8/10 - A nicely cooked, smoky bite that tasted like a solid piece of steak. Very good, not crazy Yakitori Set Menu Edomasa 7/10 - We ordered the set menu toward the end since we were still hungry, and it did the job. It came with a good amount of food, though the soup and vegetables were average. The soup was clean and refreshing, and the vegetables were cooked nicely. The chicken skewers all tasted fairly similar, and while they were flavorful, I preferred most of the individual skewers we ordered. Everything I had was delicious. The staff is friendly and the restaurant decor remind me of the small restaurants in Japan. I had the Kushiyaki Teishoku Set. It came with three meat skewers: Momo (chicken), beef, and Mizo-glazed pork belly. Also included were salad, takikomi gohan (rice with soft sauce, vegetables, and mushrooms), and paitan soup (milky chicken broth). My favorite skewers were the pork belly and beef. They were very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. I also loved the rice and the dressing on the salad. In addition to the set, you also get to choose an appetizer item. I chose the Chicken Karaage, and this was delicious. Perfectly cooked and seasoned: My husband ordered the Deluxe Teishoku, and it came with the same items as the Kushiyaki set, plus a chicken heart skewer and the Nakamoto skewer (a chicken wing). He had the grilled eel as her skewer. The chicken wing was very flavorful. We also ordered a scallop skewer on the side. We've had this before, and it never disappoints. Loved everything about this place. Came by on a late Saturday afternoon and we were seated right away, though it was busy and only getting busier with dinner right around the corner. The warm, cozy ambiance and classy interior were an immediate draw for me. The lunch and dinner menus are pretty different, with the lunch menu offering teishoku (lunch sets) as opposed to the à la carte yakitori and appetizers on the dinner menu. I went with the kushiyaki teishoku (mono, beef, and pork belly yakitori, salad, takikomi gohan, paitan soup, and your choice of appetizer -- I chose the chicken karaage). My husband got the kaisen teishoku (squid, soft-shell shrimp, eel, and salmon) with the shishito pepper appetizer. It took a bit of time for the food to come out but that's understandable given it's all grilled to order. And it was fabulous. Everything was so delicious, grilled to perfection, tender, and flavorful. I also thought prices were fair, with my set priced at $21 and my husband's at $23. We left full and very happy. The waitstaff were all nice people and checked in on us from time to time, and easy to flag down when we needed them. Or maybe it was somewhat psychological seeing the cooks at the grill weren't Japanese. It was good, but not great. Some of their non-chicken skewers were better imo like the scallops and okra. Ambiance is nice. Cozy and bustling, but quiet enough to have a conversation. We sat at the bar where you can watch the grill. Had to flag down our waiter a couple times, but they were short staffed on a Wed night (we saw him go behind the grill to help out with cooking). And he apologized afterwards. We were watching a movie nearby and decided to grab dinner at somewhere we haven't tried before, and ended up at Yakitori Edomasa. As much as I dine out, I think this was my first time eating at a yakitori focused restaurant, and I gotta say, I've been missing out. As someone who loves all things meat, the selection here had me really thinking about what to order and how much. In an effort to make it easy, we went their Edomasa set which comes with a bunch of different chicken skewers and some side dishes. We also added a couple of the skirt steak ones as well. For $30, you get a lot of food! We ended up splitting one set between two people just so we could try it out and with our add-ons it worked pretty well. The set is heavy on the chicken though, and honestly, I couldn't really taste much of a difference between them, although they tasted good. The Paitan soup wasn't my favorite. I felt like all I was tasting was the wooden spoon for some reason. The rice was a nice touch, definitely needed with all the meats. And the meatball type thing (can't remember the name of it) was low key pretty good. I think the set was good for the first visit, but honestly I think i'd opt for a la carte next time around, moreso because I'm more of a red meat eater, and I thought the red meat ones we ordered fit the flavor profile I like much more. The restaurant itself is intimate, so it makes it great for small groups and date nights. The service was very good. We told them that it was our first time and they made plenty of recommendations and explained how things worked. I don't know whether the dinner has a different menu style. The reason I mention this is because a different group, who came in after us, were asking the staff on whether it was possible to just order skewers, which initially the staff declined. This is where my assumption is that the izakaya ordering style happens during dinner time. We arrived here around lunchtime. While this time is busy with others getting lunch, we were fortunate enough to walk in and the staff gesturing us a seat. From the outside, the restaurant looks small, but inside, there is a narrow hallway that opens up to more seats. Once we settled down, we got a hold of the slender menu booklets and ordered these items: the unagi-meshi teishoku, the kushiyaki teishoku and the yasai (vegetable) teishoku. With the kushiyaki and the yasai options, they were able to select an additional appetizer, so one was the squid skewer and second one was the agedashi tofu. For drinks we ordered hōjicha, and since there were more than 2 people, we got a teapot. The dishes arrived at the same time. My dish was the unagi-meshi teishoku. This one came with a teapot, a mini unagi sauce pitcher and a spread of wasabi. The staff gave me instructions on how to eat the unagi, also mentioning that the clay pot is very hot. The unagi was very good - haven't had unagi in a while, so it was a happy treat for me. The meat was fluffy and didn't have too many bones. My relatives had the teishoku that come with a broth (Paitan soup), and this was really delicious (took a sip). It has a rich flavor that was also pretty addicting to want to take another sip. While my case's highlight was the unagi, for everyone, including myself the skewers were really good. All of the vegetables were cooked just right between the center of crispy and juicy. The meat was also cooked at the peak level of juicy and tender without getting overcooked. It was a unanimous vote that our favorites contained green onion. Stopped by here for lunch on a weekday and got: (8/10) Kushiyaki Teishoku - I love set meals in general because you get many small dishes. The salad has a sesame dressing. I really liked the momo and miso pork belly skewers. The beef was just ok in my opinion. Honestly, I would suggest eating these first thought because they definitely taste the best while hot. First time having Paitan soup and it was interesting but rather bland. I got the agedashi tofu as my appetizer. I spent $28 total including tax and tip on this set, so it is a little bit pricey. I looked at maybe 3 restaurants in japantown and completely forgot which one I had chosen for our group to meet up at. I was pretty disappointed even though it was on my shortlist. The paitan was probably the most memorable thing but it was served noodle-less sadly. The rest of the grilled meats were just okay; I've had better and more variety at other places. Yakitori Edomasa failed at the absolute bare minimum of running a restaurant. Around 5pm on Saturday, January 24, 2025, we stopped by hoping to grab yakitori to go...not to dine in, not to take up space, not to be difficult. Just a simple takeout order. Instead, we were treated like an inconvenience. We stood at the entrance while multiple staff members clearly saw us and chose to ignore us. No greeting. No acknowledgment. Nothing. An older woman dressed in black..who appeared to be in a leadership role..made eye contact and still did nothing. The silence was deliberate and uncomfortable. When we finally managed to get her attention, she told us she would help another couple first , a couple who had arrived after us. No apology. No explanation. Just brushed aside. They couldn't even be bothered to acknowledge customers who only wanted takeout. This wasn't about being busy. This wasn't confusion. This was a complete lack of respect and basic hospitality. If you can't handle greeting customers or taking a simple to-go order, you have no business being open. There are countless yakitori spots run by people who actually want customers. This is not one of them. We walked away, and honestly, if this is how they operate, I hope they don't last. read more

Stopped by for lunch and enjoyed my deluxe set! I would come back again and recommend it for skewers. It is pretty noisy inside, and I could feel some of the heat from the kitchen sitting at the counter, but I didn't bother me. The menu was easy to order from, and the food was good! I choose agedashi tofu (bottom right) as my appetizer. My favorite skewer was the nakamoto wing. It was bursting with flavor with a nice (miso?) sauce to balance the savoriness. I was pretty full, so I didn't order any more skewers a la carte. The salad, soup and rice were all pretty tasty and went well with the skewers. read more
