The ramen place had a long waitlist, so we decided to give Edomasa a try--and it turned out to be a great surprise! Everything we ordered was delicious, and service was quick. Stop by here the first time after seeing it last time we were in the area. Didn't think much of it. Just needed a light snack. How wrong we were. The food were extraordinary. The only downside is we can't order the kushiyaki by itself without ordering the teishoku set. Doesn't matter though since it is great food. Service is great, even though we were missing items from our order. Though the problem were rectified almost immediately after we inform them of the missing item. The place is small so it's cozy and a bit high on the noise level but it is manageable. Overall, we had good experience and will definitely visit again. read more

Small little yakitori spot inside the Japan town center near the bookstore. Inside is dimly lit and has a nice intimate feel to it. The menu is small and snack-like with a similarly sized alcohol menu of sake, beer and a few assorted soft drinks. Our server acknowledged us quickly and we got seated immediately. The food was served very quickly. We got the Edomada set, several dishes put together in one order, inspired by a menu that dates back to 1924 for $30. The Unagi was very tender and paired well with the rice from the Edomasa. The hamachi Kama for $12 is unheard of. But the chicken skin and chicken liver pâté was the star of the show, the ski. Was very crunchy and the pâté was very flavorful and demanded to be paired with a beverage. The only thing keeping it from a full 5 stars is the lack of smoke. We previously tried the kushiyaki bento and the Kaisen bento. Both delicious picks. The pork belly is especially delicious. The beef and shrimp can be a tad dry. The chicken and mushrooms were also okay. The bento sets came with paitan (白湯) soup when you eat at the restaurant. The environment inside is very nicely decorated in typical Japanese izakaya style. Pretty decent taste and value, but save your money for a more premium establishment that uses binchotan. I went here on a busy Saturday night and had a fairly good experience considering pricing and relatively rarity of finding an outstanding yakitori place. I was initially impressed by the value factor, but when eating yakitori, I ultimately would prefer to pay more for better quality. * yakitori edomasa set The skewers were decent. The wing was pretty salty due to the miso glaze but tasty (and would have been fantastic with a beer). The tsukune was a little dry for me, but at least it was huge. It was also lacking the egg for the classic combo, but given this is basically a "value set", it makes sense that it's not included. The paitan in particular stood out and was rich and full of flavor. It might feel a little heavy to some, but I really enjoyed it. Hatsu was pretty good, didn't have a strong offal taste. The veggie dish and rice were also nice and appreciated as being somewhat novel to me. * bonjiri Tasty but the pieces were smaller than average. I prefer bigger plump pieces, but I realize that it's also difficult to remove the bone and cartilage during prep. * asazuke More strong and salty than the lightly seasoned vinegary type. While I would have preferred some sour and refreshing crunch, this was still pretty tasty and paired nicely with the rice. Would get again. Overall, the food was fairly good, somewhat cheaper than other places but also somewhat lower quality. Aside from the paitan, there also wasn't much "wow factor" like "this is really juicy and perfectly smoky". Upon doing some research, it looks like Edomasa uses electric grills and not binchotan. Malls have different fire codes and ventilation so that makes sense. Given that the restaurant had a busy dinner service, the quality dipped a bit while they were preparing skewers en masse compared to a less hectic weekday lunch service. While I still stand by the food being pretty decent, the chicken was a tad overcooked across the board and not as hot as I'd like. One last thing to add, some other places will advertise what farms they're getting the chickens from or the breed e.g. Jidori which also serves as another quality indicator. read more

I wasn't a huge fan of the pork belly ones (too salty) or the steak (too chewy). Salmon was okay but didn't wow me. The chicken wings were good! I liked how it wasn't too fried. In the corner of the mall right by Sophie's Crepes is a small Japanese restaurant. We were quickly seated down by the host/server and she went over the menu quickly and gave us time to decide. We ordered the yakitori set menu which includes soup, rice, side dish of vegetables and a few classic choice of yakitori. We also ordered grilled hamachi collar and unagi skewer. Our first time at Yakitori Edomasa and it definitely won't be our last! From the moment we sat down, our server, Yona, made the experience exceptional. She took the time to explain the menu, answer all of our questions, and gave us great recommendations, which made ordering so much easier. The wagyu skewers were absolutely mind-blowing--perfectly juicy, tender, and worth every bite. It's been a while since I've done a review but I had to come on here to give my deepest thanks and gratitude to our server Stephanie. Clearly I enjoyed my time a little too much as I forgot to take photos. She truly made my husband and I's experience as smooth as butter. She greeted and seated us with such a warm smile and the kind of attitude you'd need to pick you up on a bad day. As indecisive as I am, Stephanie provided such wonderful insight on the menu along with being so patient with me as I scan through the menu. Wanted restaurant that specializes in yakitori. This place is located on 2nd floor next to stationary store. The lunch sets were very generous (big bowl of rice with salad and paitan soup). Most Japanese restaurants only offer miso soup. If you come with someone, you could order different yakitori sets and share. We wanted cold sake so we asked Stephanie to recommend a good sweet one. We decided to try 2 and she gave us samplers of the ume sake which was delicious. The clear one is the 3grain sake which brought us back to Tokyo when we first tried cold sake! They serve it overflow just like in Tokyo. The prices are reasonable for the Bay Area. Should be 2 $ not 3. Will definitely come back. read more
