While I have nothing but good things to say about the service and the atmosphere at Yama Sushi, I unfortunately can't leave a better review because the food was inedible. My girlfriend and I visited for a nice dinner and ordered several appetizers and entrees along with a sushi roll or two. The appetizers were decent but the entrees were very bad. And for the price, you should be getting better quality food. When the sushi finally arrived after everything we took one bite and my girlfriend couldn't even swallow it. I'm not sure if the fish just isn't fresh or what but we had to leave at that point. Again, the service from the staff was really great and the beautiful interior and the piano player made things quite lovely. But please think twice about going here for sushi. Maybe just order a few drinks and a few appetizers. Not a place I would drop another $300+ for a dinner again read more

If you love sushi, do not come here. Everything besides the drinks were so bad... but I'm from San Francisco where fresh caught fish is plentiful. I'm sorry we didn't tell anyone at the time of- nothing was salvageable. If you're staying at this resort go to their steakhouse... Lastly, not to pick a fight with UT but if y'all think that sushi is good... don't eat sushi in SF. You might be upset it's not bland or sweet enough. Only dish I liked was the cucumber sunomono- but not for the sunomono, for the bite of crab that was sweet and good. Would take that bite of crab again, any day. Because Blind Dog was all booked up we decided to give Yams Sushi at the Montage a shot. The Montage is incredible to begin with and Yama didn't disappoint. Starting with the service it parallels the hotel itself - outstanding. It was friendly, attentive and professional. The food was incredible from the presentation, fresh ingredients and flavor. The only knock would be that the restaurant setting seems a bit contrived...the out of place Japanese Screens are an after thought. Fortunately the hotel itself is stunning and makes up for that shortcoming. Pricing is expensive, but one must realize that they are dining in Park City at the most exquisite hotel in Park City. So if you asked me to choose between Blind Dog and Yama Sushi I would recommend Yama Sushi. If the Montage ever decided to really commit to the ambience of their sushi space it would be the hottest sushi spot in PC. read more

After having eaten sushi all over the world, including Japan, I can comfortably say that the sushi at Yama sushi located in the Montage Deer Valley is one of the best. I've eaten at Yama 5 or 6 times and have always had consistently high grade and beautifully presented sushi. Their poke bowl is one of my favorites. It comes on atop avocado and the server pours ponzu sauce generously on top. The garlic edamame is a great starter if you like spicy. Most recently I dined at Yama two of my three nights in town with a girlfriend. The first night we had sushi and sashimi with miso soups and spicy garlic edamame. The next night we came back and did the Wagyu beef on the hot rock and ramen. If you've never had wagyu this is a great place to try it. The experience of cooking the meat yourself at the table on a hot rock is a lot of fun and the quality of the beef is worth every penny. Highly recommend. Ramen was great too! Great cocktails and champagne selections and if you have a sweet tooth the chocolate fondue is a must! Delicious chocolate and a ton of fruit and snacks to dip. Come with friends after a day on the mountain or for a nice date night. Live music in the lobby fills the room and sets a great mood. read more

Well I am going to say its 4 stars for the service and maybe 3 1/2 for the food. The sushi was just OK. It's not that it was bad. We live in Los Angeles and have sushi about once a week. I'm also comparing this to what you could get at a Nobu or Matsuhisa in Aspen or Vail, similar ski resort towns. We had a few cooked dishes including the ramen and the rice bowl which were both fine. It was our last night in Deer Valley and we decided to take it easy and have dinner at our hotel. We made an 8:30 reservation for a group of 10. This restaurant is located off the main lobby area, so we were able to hear the live music for a large duration of the meal. We ordered family style and shared a mix of nigiri, rolls, salads and rice bowls. Service was friendly, but a tad slow. Edamame had a nice flavorful marinade and the nigiri seemed fresh and nicely cut. Of the signature rolls, the salmon battera was the best by far. The others were unmemorable. A seaweed salad was light and refreshing and the clay pot chicken rice bowl was a nice dish to share. Dessert was impressive: a big pot of chocolate fondue with a side of marshmallows, bananas, strawberries and pound cake was a great dessert for a group. Corkage was an affordable $20. Have been here multiple times and always enjoyed it. Food was fine. Nachos were quite good, as usual. Rolls I would say were run of the mill. Have had similar quality at many sushi places in town. Honestly, I expect alot more for the prices and the fact you are at the Montage. Just as satisfied with the rolls at Blind Dog, Flying Sumo, Sushi Blue...all at significantly lower prices and better ambiance. But the real disappointment was the music. It takes a lot for me to suggest that music ruined the experience. But we were 20 yards away from the hostess stand and noticed that the volume level of the music was off the charts. It was one guy at a piano with a microphone. The wailing was awful. Not another way to put it. We asked to be seated as far away from him as possible...no can do (everyone before us had the same idea). Wouldn't have mattered anyways...he was overbearing for everyone. I asked our waitress if that volume was normal and if it would be a problem to have it turned down a bit. I then witnessed at least 3 other parties ask the same thing of either the wait staff or hostess. The volume never changed. I swear, we could not hear the waitress talk to us and we could hardly carry on a conversation with each other at our table. If I was the only one with an issue, I could understand. But it was alot of people asking...and nobody doing anything about it. I'm a little shocked that whoever manages the restaurant wouldn't be more responsive to the patrons. This "restaurant" is located in The Montage hotel. The restaurant itself is a sectioned off part of the huge Lobby area. Not very intimate, and the piano playing was loud (and not to mention, singing depressing songs). But forget about all that. The sushi was fresh, cut well, and just so damn good! Anyone who has ever had real (or even close to real) Japanese food will be disappointed by the offerings at Yama Sushi. The menu offerings are encouraging, but the dishes do not deliver. The poke bowl is over seasoned to the point that you cannot taste the tuna. Tonkotsu ramen noodles are overcooked and mushy. The shiitake mushroom in the ramen was citrus flavored.
