A little joint, you might say a dive, but the food was excellent. The staff were incredibly friendly and sweet. We started with miso, delicious, seaweed squid salad, we all loved it; pork gyoza, so good, and baked mussels, amazing. The rolls we ordered were; Rainbow Pasadena Sunrise Crunchy tuna IDK Funki roll - seriously all the rolls were so good, and they have a good size portion of fish on them. I RARELY ever leave bad reviews. I've been contemplating leaving this review for quite some time and last night eating here again really set me off. A few months ago we tried to eat here and got there one hour before they close (not 10 minutes- ONE WHOLE HOUR before closing.) Most of the tables were filled and still eating or waiting on food. Upon walking in the owner basically yelled at us from behind the sushi counter that he was "closed." Uhm ok, but the door says you close in an HOUR and almost every table still had occupants. We felt so disrespected and embarrassed, like why can't we be served?! No problem we took our business , money and 30% tip elsewhere where we felt wanted and valued. Fast forward to last night, a rare date night we were excited for. We got our food, however the vibe, ambiance and service is just so strange. We felt like the employees behind the sushi counter were watching us and talking/laughing at all of the guests the entire time. Also the bill was delivered before we were even done ( with over a half hour until closing,) so much for possibly wanting more food or another round of drinks. That was a nice hint to gtfo. We're "semi-locals" that have stayed in Park City a couple times every year for a long time. We have went to other restaurants that share the parking lot with Shoyu many times over the years, but it hasn't ever been on the radar... until now We knew it is small and went at 4:30 because it was Saturday on Labor Day Weekend. They got us right in, provided good service and the food was excellent. I am usually hesitant to get Katsu Chicken at a Japanese restaurant because I typically like Katsu sauce at Poly/Hawaiian restaurants better (notably Honolulu Grill in West Jordan, which is still my all-time favorite). However, I was pleasantly surprised with their Katsu Chicken dinner plate which also included a bowl-sized portion of yummy Miso (not shown in the picture I took). My son also got the same, but it had such generous portions, we could have shared one. I liked the Katsu sauce, which wasn't too strong, but as anticipated, less sweet than what you find at Poly/Hawaiian restaurants. I took a picture of their Cucumber Salad after we had eaten some. It had a light, citrus dressing that was a bit different than what it typically served at Japanese restaurants and was a good surprise. My wife and daughter got the IDK and Alaskan rolls, which were very good. While Shoyu is a bit more pricey than typical Japanese in the Salt Lake Valley, it was less pricey than the ones near the center of Park City, which we tend to avoid even during less busy seasons (when we are typically there) because of parking. Shoyu has made it on our "short list" of Park City restaurants that are a good value. We will likely go back on a weekday to be able to access their lunch Bento boxes. read more

My Friends picked this place out before we went to a concert at the canyons. I should have known better as they don't go to PC very often. But I thought they had been here before, they had not to my surprise. It is very small, which is fine. It's mom and pop owned place which are usually the best places. It is very dark inside, and honestly didn't seem like a very clean place. We didn't feel welcome just from the menu alone, it states no modifications. Look if you own any kind of Resturant, it doesn't matter what kind, you have to be willing to make some modifications. We had a party of 6. 1 of my friends doesn't like veggies, and 2 didn't like sushi. I know why did they go with a sushi place right. But any other restaurant is accommodating to people's needs, allergies etc.,. Printing a new menu and maybe being a little bit more friendly with service would do this place wonders. The lady wasn't rude, but she does not have great customer service that is for sure. That being said we ordered all different array of items. Calamari was first and was so greasy, it def wasn't fresh and was overcooked and too chewy. Edamame had 2 tablespoons of salt on the top instead of tossing it in a bowl, I have never been served edamame this way. That is pure laziness. Coconut shrimp was ok, it tasted and looked frozen as well, and was again overcooked. A friend had the miso and side salad, both were ok. I shared some baked mussels, taste was good, but again too chewy and overcooked. Guys, you gotta out timers on your dishes. It was just the 2 owners cooking, and doing everything, it is obvious by them overcooking most everything they need more help. Service was very slow. A friend had ordered sake, and had to ask for it again. We really didn't want the sushi as it took so long. There were only 2 others tables seated in the place. They looked frustrated as well. We almost cancelled our order, but decided to just wait. The order finally came out. They have good sushi (thus 2 stars instead of 1), but under the last two pieces of my role was a hair that was black and short (very obviously not mine because I have long blonde hair). It was unfortunate that I found it when I was almost done but they refused to accommodate the issue. I told them that I would gladly pay for the other two rolls if I could at least get the third removed from them bill which they would not do. I could only just barely squeeze a 5% discount which was a meager $2 off the $60 bill. I didn't want to be that person but I am a slight germaphobe and just felt like they wanted their money and thought that I put the hair in there to get a refund. The only possible reason this has higher ratings is because everyone rating this place is native to Utah. Utah hands down is one of worst states in the country for a good culinary experience. A good restaurant here is an average restaurant anywhere else. With that said, I came in with the bar very very low. Hands down the worst food I have ever had here and maybe ever. I get gyoza about once a week. It's hard not to be at least okay. I'm positive they do not make their own. Most store bought ones are 5 star compared. Zero flavor, says pork but saw no meat, definitely the lowest quality possible and possible msg. Doesn't come with sauce either ...what? Veggie roll. They offer two. That's it. Really guys? You can't have a cucumber avocado roll even? The lowest Effort ever and they will not make any exceptions on anything or make any custom rolls... states right on the menu. Know why... because they don't have a clue what they are doing and have zero passion for quality. The place reads "I give up" everywhere. Tiles missing on the floor, grungy ... weird ambiance. The only thing I kept thinking is they are either going under or they are totally that horribly ran place on restaurant rescue shows. I do a ton of reviews here on Yelp. Rarely negative ones. As with the other reviews it takes a VERY LONG time to receive your food. So make sure you have your mobile phone on you to keep you entertained. They definitely need another sushi chef to help the other two that were working very hard to fulfill the online orders and diners. On the positive, our waitress was very friendly. If you're looking for a high quality sushi experience with great ambience then try Yuki Yama on Main St. Reservations are a must there during peak season and weekends. They import most of their fish from Japan and their chefs are highly skilled and trained. My best friend lives in Heber. I live in Sandy. We both love sushi, so we met here, neither of us having tried ti before. We came right when it opened, so we were basically the only ones there. It is a tiny, tiny little place, with a capacity of maybe 20 at the most? I got the Vegas roll and the rainbow roll. They were really good, and I think my friend liked her rolls too. Our rolls were served all on the same plate at the same time, which was a little odd compared to my other sushi dining experiences. We ordered separate rolls and weren't really sharing them. The inside of the restaurant was a little bit dark, which felt off putting with so much daylight left. I could use some more light, for sure, maybe via the decor or paint? Brighten it up a little! Shoyu was a little bit pricier than what I normally pay, but it's also Park City, right? Overall, if I were in the neighborhood and needed some sushi, I'd come back. read more

SLOW! I think this is hands down the slowest restaurant I have ever eaten at. I should say the slowest restaurant I've waited at because there wasn't a lot of eating going on between playing with my chopsticks and watching the wait staff turn away customer after customer because they were too busy with the THREE tables (total of SEVEN people) in the restaurant! To be clear they had two wait staff who were doubling as kitchen help and two dedicated kitchen employees and they did have several take out orders. This place used to be better. When we moved here ten years ago, this was our hidden gem. I don't know if it was Covid or what, but the whole place has gone downhill. I could literally see Costco's edamame plastic microwaveable bags sitting next to the stove. I doubt any of the apps are made fresh. The sushi is okay but it's all either tuna or tempura shrimp. Very little variety or imagination and you can't sub out anything as it angrily states on the menu. They are always out of the sake or wine I order and their list is so tiny. The liquor store is literally a stones throw away. I couldn't believe how empty it was on a Saturday at 7. Makes me sad because I remember how it used to be. read more

The owners were nice and friendly even though they were busy preparing the sushi. The servers were also nice and helpful. The place is cozy and located only 6 mins drive from Utah Olympic Park. What a disappointing experience. My wife and I love coming here (used too), today she had a terrible day and I offered to go get her sushi. She mentioned "hey Shoyu just sent me a 15% discount, let's go there, we love their sushi anyways." She called and asked for their specials and they were not available online. She asked if they would honor her 15% off because she wanted the special. They said Yes. When I went it they said they can't honor it "only online" I let the owner know we were told that it was going to be ok. After it was apparent that I inconvenienced him, and he was struggling to do the discount, he opened his cash register and handed me $5 and said "here take this it's easier." Besides the fact that it was not the 15% off, and now I felt belittled and disrespected, I handed them their measly $5 back. We won't be coming back for a while. We have been going to Shoyu for many years, and it is always extremely good! The owner operator runs a great restaurant, with excellent food and friendly service. There are some complaints about slow service because that is because it can be crowded and the locals love it. If you show up on a weekend, you just need to be patient. My wife and I arrived at Shoyu in the later afternoon and we were the only patrons due to the early hour of our arrival. We were told to sit ourselves where we wanted so we chose a table near the end of the interior in front of the sushi bar. As we walked through the restaurant, I began to notice an unpleasant odor, a bit like the smell of an old rag mop that had been sitting around too long. The interior wasn't fancy but had some contemporary art on the wall behind the tables. It looked as, I think the best word to describe it would be: ramshackle. They have a drink cooler that looks like it belongs in a convenience store that holds their one beer selection; Sapporo. So we had a Sapporo beer, which was good, two specialty rolls listed on the blackboard hanging above the sushi bar, which were good, and a Poke bowl which also was good. I've got to say the food was fresh and tasty, but that weird odor just threw off the appeal a bit. On the way out, I noticed that several of the slate floor tiles had broken out and hadn't been fixed. And the place just needs a thorough steam cleaning, a repaint and repair job and a little more aesthetic sense to make it more appealing. I'd go back for the food, but maybe I'd do takeout instead of dining in, at least until they get it cleaned up a bit. read more

How can you not remember what was in the roll?-plus I asked so I could replace. There was also a locals discount, which my wife was aware of due to the repeated emails we receive-but didn't sign up for. When I asked, got the same attitude from the manager or owner to do the order online. How about not sending me unsolicited emails! Pretty decent-quality sushi in Park City. When ordering sushi in PC, I get it here more than anywhere else. The dynamite appetizer, Jazz, Moab, and Montac are my favorites here. It's a small place in a strip mall but it's well-kept and cozy. It's kinda dark inside. I usually just get takeout. I do wish there were more options and different types of fish on the menu (particularly with respect to sashimi and nigiri). There are quite a few variations on the California roll here, which isn't necessarily bad... but a bit more variety would be nice. There are limited sushi options in PC in general, especially for lunch. read more

What to say about Shoyu... we were looking for a Japanese restaurant, seeing as the baby in the family is going through a picky phase and this is all she eats (lol). We traveled about 15-20 minutes to get here from where we were staying (we're out of towners). AND Well it didn't disappoint at all we got there as it just opened for dinner so there was no wait, but as soon as we were seated the service was 5-stars, our servers were kind and attentive. The food was DELICIOUS, our 8 year old niece even gave her compliments to the chef (not prompted by us, I promise). We tried a variety of sushi rolls, teriyaki chicken, salmon, yellow tail fish, miso, the tempura! & the chef had us try the Ghost Pepper Roll (let's just say adults were crying which is a good thing!) I went there yesterday with a friend. It was great I ordered the spicy tuna roll. The sushi was rolled perfectly to not fall apart and sliced in even cuts. The wasabi was on the spicier side (for wasabi). We also got the vegetable and shrimp tempura. The tempura had sweet potato's, asparagus, mushrooms, and broccoli. When we walked in it was very quiet. We were seated quickly and the waitress took our orders quickly. The back was messy. I can completely understand why; but maybe clean up a little bit? Our food was out in 25 minutes. The food here is GREAT! We came on a Sunday around 5 for dinner and it was so good. We got 5 rolls and edamame and our total was around $80. I would have given 5 stars, but the service wasn't very good at all. We stood at the doorway for about 5 minutes before anyone came to seat us, and then waited about 10-15 minutes before we even ordered drinks. Once we got our food, no one came back to check or asked how the food was or anything. Our drink cups were empty 2 separate times. I could understand if it was a larger place, but there is a sign that says it can't seat more than 25 people. The food made everything not seem so bad but the service was bad. read more

Trust me - do not eat here. They had a small menu with none of the basic rolls (classic california, salmon, yellowtail) and the quality of fish was BAD. Ended up throwing away the leftovers and feeding the salmon to our dogs (yes, it was that bad.) Waiter was very friendly but service was slow considering there were very few people there. It was very expensive (300+ for five people) for almost inedible food, would not recommend. No clue how some people have eaten there and given it 4 stars, I've had gas station sushi better than this. We witnessed the table in front of us get up and leave because they waited one hour to receive the wrong dish. It took them 90 minutes to bring us our dishes, and they weren't all correct. When I spoke to the manager she laughed about how the wrong dishes were brought and how terrible her staff is. I liked this place, the food is good, but it's one of those places where the service is just so Abysmal that it ruins the experience and food. I am going to give this place two stars just from an attitude perspective from the owner. I haven't even eaten the food yet, as I am so annoyed. I searched yelp for a good sushi place and this place seemed popular and I was really excited to try it for the first time. I ordered take out when they opened at 5:30 and showed up shortly before 6 after I ordered a Sashimi medium and a Chicken Teriyaki dinner. On their website which is what I used to order, the medium sashimi is 34 and the chicken teriyaki is 18. When i arrive to pick up, the food isn't ready yet, but the bill arrives and the sashimi is 40 and the teriyaki is 20 so the bill is 64+ ( I wasn't given a copy of the receipt I realize now that I am home...another annoyance) and I was caught surprised. So I kindly point out to the server that the website lists different prices, and he is very nice and says the website hasn't been updated in quite some time. He says he will bring it up with the owner, whose response to me directly is simply "do you still want the food, because if you don't that's fine". I assure him I want the food, but I explain the prices on the website are different, and he responds again "do you still want the food, because if you don't that's fine." I am baffled at this point and say "well when you show up expecting something (price) and you get something else (price) it's not a great feeling". I explain I will still pay for my order, I'm hungry but I am still not understanding why the owner can't come over and kindly explain that the website is outdated and he understands my frustration at the unexpected surprise. Is that too much to ask? It's not a lot of money but still when people search your business out I think it is fair that when you show up the price is what it was when you found the place, no? I would have still paid, but at least left not feeling like he couldn't care less. Just a shame as I really wanted to have a chill night after a long day. read more

Stopped in here hoping for a fantastic evening to end our honeymoon trip up to Park City, but unfortunately we left unhappy. Firstly, we stood at the door for a good long time listening to the wait staff talking to one of the other customers about random things before a different staff member finally noticed us and finally seated us. We ordered the calamari appetizer and a number of rolls. The calamari came out absolutely soaked in oil, soggy, with the breading falling off. All of the rolls that came out were falling apart, poorly wrapped, and completely inedible using chopsticks. We ended up resorting to the "scoop-and-throw-it-in-your-mouth-before-it-disintegrates" method of eating and still ended up eating many deconstructed pieces. It would have been worth the effort, except that it just wasn't that good with rice and cucumber making up 80-90% of the roll - making them rather bland. This is the best place for sushi in Park City, by far. I was introduced a few months ago by a bunch of girls who had the right idea: casual, delicious, and fresh fresh FRESH sushi! I'll never stray from Hoki's (aka the top chef owner/sushi master) Shoyu Sushi House again! This restaurant is itsy bitty but MOST DEFINITELY better than sushi blue (overpriced Bill White crap!). Shoyu's service is casual, please remain calm if you feel the pace is too slow, order the maguro tapaz and chill out. Because the restaurant is small its style reminds me of a sushi place in the city (NYCity that is, where I lived for 4 years swinging steaks off Park Ave while going to school)--nothing flashy or obnoxious just good fish and that's all you need. I'm always meeting other locals at the sushi bar and chatting the night away over the Dragon, Jazz, and Gordo Rolls. I'll order sashimi plates with friends to share. I keep bringing other people from around town who had either never heard about Shoyu or hadn't thought to try Shoyu. The owner Hoki (pronounced O-kee) is the kindest committed sushi maker in town.
