The food was decent, but it was really pricey. The experience was nice, as the chef puts on a show while cooking the food, but the meal was $25 (teriyaki chicken). This was the cheapest adult meal on the menu and is a bit much for the portion size. It came with veggies, 2 shrimp, and the chicken itself. We got yum yum sauce, which was very salty. They add an 18% gratuity to your bill automatically, but upon asking, we were told we didn't have to additionally add another tip. Yamato's has good food depending on who cooks it. The customer service is horrible and always has been. Mainly due to the owner, the daughters aren't mean like their mom. I understand sometimes you have horrible customers but they treat everyone as if they are a horrible customer. I mean sometimes you will get a very nice server and there are about two nice chefs. Hector is one of them. They said business is slow and I can honestly see why. They charge for everything even the air you breathe and skimp on what they do charge for. For example, an extra sauce is a dollar and they don't fill the small container up even halfway. Also, the place could use some major updates. All this to say if they focused on providing a great customer experience ( they can be mean and rude) , updated the building, and stopped being so greedy they could possibly get some new steady business. First & foremost our meal was good, it was the usual "does not disappoint Japanese Yamato food". Quality sized portions and limitless yum-yum sauce (some locations are so anal about this, but here they literally pass the tub around!). However, this restaurant is a mess. The outer appearance is lacking, almost a shamble, from the road front it appears closed and if no one is there. The main entrance is around back, which is slightly less unkept and more perky. I'm not a local, but this area of Warren looks dilapidated and in need of an economy boost. The staff, while friendly, appeared tired and not enthusiastic about their positions (on arrival, one waitress sitting at the hostess area "do I have to do another table already?"). We visited on a Saturday night and because of slow business only maybe 4 (of approximately 10) grills were running. If I owned this branch I would consider staffing reassessment and relocation or a major renovation. read more

I'm a long time Ohioan who believes you can get decent sushi in these parts. And you can, but just not at Yamato. A little history, I cut my sushi chops on this place, when it was up the road a piece, in the same motel complex as the place I spent my first night as a married man. Mine was a new palate to the sushi game. I overlooked the small slice of fish, the poorly prepared rice (and too much of it), the questionable time spent under that glass, and the marginal service. Today, I've seen a few more sushi joints. One more shot for old-time's sake, I thought. Hell, how many times do you turn 50? The place: The main entry from the front of the place takes you into a cavernous bar/pool-table/foyer/void. Hello, anyone home? Literally wandering through the place, past the bar, leads to the "back" of the place where you can see the sushi bar and hibachi tables in the distance. The only option for sushi-only dining is the sushi bar. That's not good. I want a table. Oh, and there's an outdoor seating area. I haven't seen this much indoor/outdoor carpet since the last "pool party" at a friend's house in 1975. I could kinda smell the chlorine. The food: No change here. Small portions, too much poorly prepared rice. The sushi "chef" didn't understand what to do with the quail egg I ordered. I feared a scrambled or fried option. It ended up on my tobiko, but it was a bit cold. And the yellowtail, holy crap. I argued with the wife on this one...I swear the poor kid thought yellowtail was white fish. The wife thinks the yellowtail just sucked. She's probably right. The ginger was sparse, even after asking for a bit more. The Kirin smelled faintly of skunk. The price: All of this fun at a bargain price might have gotten a pass. But no, the sushi was about $2.25 per piece. We happened in on a night when the per piece price was only $1.50. This still left us with a $50 tab, with tip. I've had better at Publix for about 1/4 the price. So, to wrap it up, just don't head over here thinking sushi. read more

Have always loved Yamato but was extremely disappointed today. Ordered 18 pieces of sushi, and it was clear that my order was rushed through the line. I was served in about five minutes, and the hastily-made sushi had the worst presentation I have ever seen in a restaurant. Pieces of fish were sticking out of the sushi, and several of the pieces barely had any fish in them. Moreover, the fish did not taste fresh at all. I stopped here on a return trip home and found that the sushi tasted nothing like it did when I lived here. Additionally, the store has tacky signs taped to the front of the door admonishing customers about policies (EX- your WHOLE party has to be here before you will be seated). I was disappointed today to see a giant sign taped to the door saying that only the dinner menu will be served all day. From my seat, I could see several parties leave after reading the sign. The restaurant should have posted this on their Facebook page- I honestly would have come a different day as all of the other people in my party were not sushi eaters and got stuck paying the relatively high dinner menu prices. This place is okay for Hibachi but I have had much better. The chef wasn't very entertaining and didn't have much personality. The food was standard hibachi as one could expect but the miso broth was just that - broth and about 1 mushroom and 1 onion. Everything was going fine until we paid our bills. The waitress came up to us when she gave us our checks and asked us how much we tipped the chef. She informed us that they are supposed to split the tips 50/50 but the chef "isn't always honest." This was incredibly unprofessional and if it was my staff, it would not be allowed. It was a strange and terrible way to end a "just okay" meal. If you are dying for hibachi, have at it. First time here & really was not impressed. We were told a 30 minute wait & waited well over an hour. I asked them about this after an hour & was told that they were preparing our table. After 20 minutes longer & seeing people that came in after us be seated I went & asked again, that's when we finally got seated. Our waitress didn't come over for another 20 minutes to take our drink orders & thank goodness she took our food order as well. It was another 10 minutes before she brought our drinks over. The soup was not even that hot & very salty. The salad dressing was very watery. I ordered an egg roll, took 2 bites, went to take the third & it was cold. When our chef got there he apologized for the wait. I ordered a shrimp flambé, he did not have my shrimp, he did not realize this until he was almost done cooking. When he did cook it he didn't light it to burn off the liquid & it was very salty. My sweet & sour chicken was swimming in the sauce & the chicken had no flavor. I feel because they were so busy that he just rushed through the cooking process so he could get to the next table. There were 6 of us so 18% tip got added on to our bills, even though they were split. The tip gets split between the waitress, who was not that great, & the cook, who barely talked to us. The hardest working people that I seen tonight were the busboys. Our total with tip for 4 people was $100. We've gone to steak places that weren't that expensive for 4 people. Not worth it for subpar food & 4 hours of our night gone. read more

This place is the BEST Japanese restaurant in the city. I had a work trip in Warren, OH and someone recommended this place to try. I was a little skeptical because I am not from the area but I gave it a try. Great customer service and the food was absolutely phenomenal. The sushi was amazing, the yum yum sauce was just perfect(not watery), and the hibachi- 5 STARS! They cook everything so well and so delicious. First off.... It's freezing. So cold you can't take your coat off. I sat at the bar waiting for our friends and asked for a drink menu. She said nothing.... Walked over to behind the liquor, grabbed some notebook paper with some stuff written in it and sat it in front of me. It was 3 pieces of paper with the recipe for drinks. I ordered a butterscotch martini. She needed the papers back so she knew how to make it. The butterscotch was apparently almost gone. She pulled the top off and was hitting it on the bottom (like you would a ketchup bottle.) She then poured it into the glass (without shaking it) and it barely filled the glass. I'd call it 3/4 full. Backup.... She took the glass from the ceiling rack and dipped it in her dirty dish water and then towel dried it. So I dare to take a sip.... Yep, it's soapy. Warm. & awful. Like terrible awful. I contemplated mixing it with some Pepsi and then remembered the soap water. Our food was mediocre at best. The scallops were sliced in half. They were barely 1cm in thickness. Steak we went for filet. It tasted like grass or something not fresh. The white sauce that you normally get in a dish- they passed the silver bucket of it around for us to get our own. Classy. We ordered two sushi rolls with our drinks. A California roll and a spicy tuna. They came out just as the chef was putting our meat on the plates. Oh and icing on my cake- the dinner menu had actual drinks listed. Why when I asked for a menu did I get notebook paper with pen written recipes? How hard would it have been to grab a dinner menu to let me look at? Bartender literally never said a word to us. I've been to hibachi restaurants all over the United States. This was the worst. I have literally been eating here for 35 years!! I took my wife here on our first date 27 years ago and she licked the plate clean and she still does this, well maybe she's a bit more polite. Our food is always fresh and cooked to perfection and their yum-yum sauce has a savory flavor as I love! They have the best yum-yum out of any hibachi's that you will go to. They have recently replaced there table tops with granite and it is a great improvement to the old tops. You know people are people but the service and servers are quite nice. So if you read one of their posts and someone complains about the service I have to say I've always have had good service. I would recommend that you try this restaurant out because I enjoy it everytime. read more

I don't think I have ever had a bad experience at Yamatos. Yes it's expensive but it's worth it for the amount of food you get. I've tried the sushi and it's mediocre but not horrible at all. Up until Mizu moved in down the road it was my go to for sushi. I highly recommend the Yamato roll if you wanna try sushi. I've had their dumplings as those are my favorite and was impressed. I've also had the edamame and it was good too. For dinner I usually stick with the teriyaki chicken but have tried the filet and was impressed with both. I love the salad, the dressing is by far one of my all time favorites. The soup is very good as well. The yum yum sauce is just like liquid gold, I can't get enough. You will more then likely bring half if not most of your food home. Some of the chefs are better than others but I've never had a bad one. I typical end up with some chef every time. My husband's nephew took us there and it was my first hibachi. I had seaweed salad and edamame for starters. The main course for me was chicken and filet mignon hibachi. The food was prepared right at the table on a very hot grill and it was very tasty and it seemed like everybody at our table enjoyed it. We stopped there on a busy Friday night and being 6 people we thought we might have to wait for a table but nevertheless we got a table right away.
