First visit to Yamato and I was a bit underwhelmed. For context, I was the only customer in the restaurant around 12:30 pm on a Saturday. The good: crab rangoon was very tasty and I'd recommend it. The meh: miso soup was lukewarm and tasted bland. Probably the worst miso I've had, but was still edible. The ginger dressing was poured on the salad. While the dressing was tasty, there was at least a half inch of dressing remaining when I finished the salad. The salad itself tasted fresh. The bento was also just "okay". The chicken inside was a little over cooked, but the tempura was tasty. The rice was average tasting. Nothing special. A couple observations about the ambiance and service. The men's bathroom looked clean, but I noticed a disposable razor sticking out of the top of the mirror. Also, there was almost no soap in the dispenser. I had to push several times to get any out of it. I mentioned it to my server. Speaking of which, the dishes were brought out (and removed) promptly, but almost no dialog. No asking how the food was, no offer for a refill, and the check was dropped off and tried to come back in two minutes to get it before I had my wallet out. I've worked in the service industry and understand there could be a shift change, etc, but that wasn't the case this time. A few more patrons came in and the same server seated/took care of them. I was very happy to try a Japanese restaurant in Milton. However, it seems like what you would expect for a small town Japanese restaurant- inauthentic and disappointing. We went for lunch and I got a chicken teriyaki bento box, while my partner got the sushi lunch special. The bento box had fried rice, two dumplings, a spring roll and chicken teriyaki with a side salad. The rice tasted bland and like they used dirty water to cook it. I don't know how you can mess up rice but it was not good. The chicken teriyaki was alright but very greasy. The spring roll was not really worth the calories. The dumplings, however, were the best item by far. The sushi was just okay. Nothing special. The service was fine except our waitress didn't speak English well at all. I am compassionate towards those learning a new language but she got our orders wrong twice and it was very difficult to speak with her. One good thing is that the restaurant looks nice inside. I'm glad I didn't spend too much money on this meal or I'd be upset. I wouldn't eat here unless you're really not picky about food and just want quick Japanese-ish food. read more

Just okay, not great. I came in an hour and a half before closing on a Saturday, and I felt like I was being rushed out the door. I got steak hibachi and a sushi roll. The ginger salad dressing was REALLY good, my favorite part of the meal . Miso soup was below average, it had a weird unpleasant taste to it. My hibachi was just okay, the fried rice was literally just rice with soy sauce on it and a little egg, no veggies like I usually see in hibachi fried rice. I was given no side sauces with my entrée (yum yum or steak sauce) which was disappointing. I could have asked, but there are signs around the restaurant saying that yum yum costs $2 (I think for takeout) and I didn't want to pay extra, and if it were included I assume the waitress would have at least asked if I would have liked some. I also did not receive a bowl for my soy sauce, so I had to pour it directly on to the sushi roll. Not sure if this experience was standard, or just because I was within an hour of closing. Service was friendly though. I feel like I overpaid for what was essentially a cut- up NY strip and some rice with soy sauce that I could have easily made at home. Sushi was decent, generous serving size. The restaurant had a very strong smell of cut grass, I couldn't figure out what was causing that smell, might've been an air freshener, but I didn't think it smelled good. Overall, I would order takeout here in a pinch, but I do think it's worth the 20m drive to Pensacola to get much better hibachi for a similar price. read more

I had high expectations from this location. Calling itself Japans Steakhouse, one would expect much higher quality. The food was not bad but it was not high quality. It reminded us of Panda Express quality food, and not finer Japanese cuisine. I have been to Japan personally, and so I have a basis of comparison. The decor was the best part of the restaurant. Beyond that , our server was somewhat aloof. There were no alcoholic drinks on the menu at all. I enjoy a hot sake with my Japanese cuisine. I also enjoy the hot green tea at most establishments. The dinnerware was appropriate , the bento boxes were good. The dinner plates were acceptable as well. This is why I don't understand when I ordered the hot green tea and it was brought in an oversized mug. Excuse me?! No no no! A small kettle with tea cups are appropriate and recommended for serving hot tea to patrons. Overall experience was lackluster at best. Lazy at worst. This WAS my favorite restaurant in Milton.... Until tonight. My husband and I were seated at a dirty table. When we told the server, he quickly wiped the middle of the table with dry napkins... so we got up and sat at another table. After my husband found 3 hairs in his chicken fried rice, the waiter said the hairs didn't look like any of the cook's hair.... Followed by the cook loudly saying he wasn't remaking it and was yelling at the waiter... unbelievable. Then the waiter brings dessert out and tells us the cook didn't want to remake the food but the waiter "gave him a stern talk" and he's remaking it.... We didn't want dessert first any more than we wanted a dirty table or a rude cook or hair in the food, or a million excuses..... An apology would have been nice. We were told there was no manager there who we could talk to about any of this. I worked in a restaurant for 5 years. I know what a quality dining experience should be and tonight was bad enough that we will never go back..... read more
