Although it's listed as "Yamato," this place is now called Sakura, which doesn't appear on Yelp! as its own place, but this is the same place I went for dinner a couple of nights ago. I am struggling with what to say about it. There are some things to recommend it. It's local, and not a chain. The food is prepared fresh, the prices seem reasonable, and they do a robust take-out business, so they're apparently well thought of by the locals. Dining in, I started my dinner with hot sake. The inexpensive variety of heated sake that most Japanese restaurant have (Gekkeikan or Sho Chiku Bai are most popular) seemed to be all Sakura has. When I asked my server about whether they had any of the more upscale, unfiltered, or better quality offerings, she seemed puzzled. Their selection of beer is modest, and wines are almost non-existent. For the food, I chose a Bento box with teriyaki chicken, vegetables, four pieces of California roll, two crab Rangoon, and fried rice. I started with Miso soup, though I also had the choice of a salad. The soup was very good, if a little saltier than others I've had - but not unpleasant at all. It came with a soup spoon in case I didn't want to sip directly from the bowl, as is customary. When my Bento box arrived, it was obviously hot and fresh, but there was no wasabi for the California roll, nor did my server bring chopsticks. A quick trip to the sushi prep area (can't really call it a sushi bar) and I got what I was after, though it seemed odd not to bring those items automatically. The California roll was tasty, as was the tender slivers of teriyaki chicken. The vegetables were piled under the chicken and slathered with the teriyaki sauce. Other Bentos I've had included tempura veggies but these were fine; crisp-tender, not overcooked. The so-called "fried rice," however, was more like plain brown rice. No hunks of veggies, egg, or bits of barbecue pork that are typical in fried rice. And that's OK, but one is not the other. The portions were generous enough that I took some back to the hotel for lunch the next day. I can overlook the service, considering that the lone server had to answer the phone, greet guests who were dining in, and handle all the take-out orders. The atmosphere inside, though, was a bit odd. It's pretty generic, and the music they were playing could be described as "house trance," which doesn't say "Asian restaurant" to me. Maybe that's why so many people get the food "to go" and don't linger. So... the food is pretty good but given the not-so-great service and the poor selection of adult beverages, I'll probably try somewhere else next time I need my Asian fix. read more

We traveled from Houston, TX to Marion for Thanksgiving and were pleasantly surprised at this Sushi place. This was some of the best sushi we had. Fresh and customized! I asked for Sushi wrapped in cucumber instead of rice and the chef made this amazing spicy tuna roll wrapped in crunchy cucumber. I think they should add it to the menu! Best low carb option! Family also had hibachi and other rolls and everyone was very happy with the taste. Service was also good. Only comment is around the decor which could use a little refreshing. read more

Good food, good prices, pleasant service, dated setting. While dining here, I noticed most of the lunch crowd got their food to go. But since I had been in my car most of the day, I wanted to get out. So, I placed an order for gyoza (6 small pork dumplings) and the Teryaki Chicken Bento Box which comes with a choice of soup or salad (Egg drop soup for me). The soup was lighter in color and maybe a bit thinner than other soups I've had elsewhere, but the flavor was full of egg (and a bit of salt). The gyoza was next and came with a dipping sauce. The plate was colorfully presented with shredded carrot ribbons in the pinwheel center. Nice balance of crispy outside and tender inside. Good flavor! The bento box contained a single, but large, crabmeat rangoon, a 4-pc California roll, about a cup of mixed rice, and a decent lunch sized portion of chicken and veggies prepared in a thin Teryaki sauce. The chicken was a little bit overcooked, but not enough to ruin the meal. The veggies were also thoroughly cooked beyond al dente. I'm struggling with what to give this restaurant. The food was Very good but we struggled a little bit with the facility and the staff. Unfortunately there was an ordering issue and our waiter, who freely admitted he did not eat sushi, was not informed enough to let us know what Sushi we got. He pointed to the tuna and said it was something else. I've been eating sushi long enough to know what tuna looks like. There was also a problem with us not getting a role that we ordered. A gem tucked in a small town! Crab rangoon was very good. We all enjoyed the soup and salad (a part of nearly all meal options). I had the Spicy Girl sushi roll. It was very delicious but the size of the roll (diameter) was almost too large to eat in one bite. Also, the width of the roll could be a bit smaller. Those in my party thoroughly enjoyed the main entrees (chicken, filet and shrimp hibachi) that include veggies and fried rice. The service was excellent, the atmosphere delightfully quaint and the cost was just right. The only negative, most Japanese restaurants include table grilling, Yamato does not offer this option. There were at least 5 other groups that were seated after us, got their food and left before we got our food. I heard about Yamato from people local to Marion. I was glad to hear about a locally owned Japanese restaurant! You probably want to get hibachi in the restaurant, but they also are great for takeout. I ordered a California roll, egg drop soup and spring rolls. The food was ready very fast and tasted very fresh. The sushi rolls were a bit smaller than what I'm used to, but prepared well and fresh. The spring rolls were also on the small side. The soup was a healthy portion and had great flavor. It was super easy to place my order and pick it up. The dining area isn't huge, so I can imagine it fills up pretty quick. read more

Best Japanese Steakhouse in Marion! Also, the only Japanese Steakhouse in Marion. Regardless, Yamato is quality hibachi. Almost all meals are served with a soup and salad that taste fresh and homemade. The "Bento Box" is a variety dish that gives you a sample of items to try. It's a great first dish to pick out what you might want to choose for future visits. The service is fast and the servers are kind. They are more than willing to explain what a dish might include or what ingredients might be found in the large selection of sushi rolls offered. We are lucky to have a place like Yamato in Marion. If you are craving sushi or hibachi, or just want to try something that isn't McDonald's or Taco Bell, then go to Yamato! read more

My daughter LOVES sushi. I on the other hand, can eat it but have never really enjoyed it...until now. I lived in Okinawa, Japan for a year and had several weird raw fish/and octopus experiences that sorta freaked me out! Well meaning Okinawan friends trying to get this (at that time) very inexperienced diner to try many of the local delicacies! Yamato has grown on me. We have ordered takeout several times, and have eaten there twice. By sampling my daughter's sushi, in the privacy of my kitchen, I have come to appreciate it more. I am having strange cravings for pickled ginger and wasabi, which I could eat by itself! The food has always been very fresh. The cold things are cold, and the hot menu items arrive hot. This is a big deal for me- and I am notorious for sending my food back to the kitchen to have it warmed up if needed. The service when dining at the restaurant is good. I have become partial to the dynamite roll, the volcano roll, and hot lover roll. Cucumber roll, Philadelphia roll, and cucumber avocado roll. I also have had the udon noodles which were good. Chicken yakitori appetizer was nice. We also had fried green tea ice cream for dessert. It was quite interesting! I have not yet ordered from the hibachi menu, but I'm certain it is only a matter of time. Will most definitely be returning to Yamato! read more

I've been in Marion on business for 2 months. This is THE BEST restaurant of Marion. Better sushi than gas city or even the 4 places in Fort Wayne. This place is so good that I've been going for lunch and dinner. Easy to order online. *make sure if you google Yamato, you get the Marion one and not the one in Iowa. Websites look the same. Favorite rolls are Yamato roll. Philly roll Out of control Spicy girl And the play boy roll. Only complaint is that the rolls under the menu "special cooked roll" are cut very large. Definitely agree with the other reviews, for the area it was a delight. I had the sashimi lunch special which was very cheap and you get what you pay for. Although I suspect the crab sashimi was imitation and the roll was loosely rolled, it was a delight. Also I saw that many of the other patrons had ordered more expensive specialty rolls that looked exquisite. read more

I ordered delivery from here payed 31.90 waited over an hour called the restaurant they said the don't have delivery I showed them were I payed for it and the Yelp site where it's offered and they said that the cost was doulbed and in six years have never been offered delivery an any format they did bring my food after they closed and appoligized for the mix up read more

Excellent cooked rolls, egg drop soup, miso soup, and the bento box has great shrimp tempura with rice and crab Rangoon. If you bring a large party try the love boat full of rolls not the cooked rolls though. Chinese section is great also k love the pepper chicken very fresh read more
