THE IRONY. Came to Yang's for the stuffed chicken wings but ended up feeling lukewarm about them. This restaurant serves Hmong's food. Probably the least complicated menu of any Asian restaurants. What I have found to be working for me in regards to Hmong food is to get sticky rice with a meat (sausage, pork belly, or chicken) and fish sauce. I have never been a fan of their sausage so I will always pass on that meat. The stuffed goods are all about what's inside. I just did not like the stuffings in the chicken wings at Yang's, just too much clear noodles. It almost tasted like a vegetarian appetizer. I felt like the roasted pork bellies were the better meat. They were so delicious and I loved the outermost piece which had that charred taste. They would go really well with ramen noodles. The purple sticky rice was my favorite. Came to eat at this place a few times. Service is fast. The place is always clean. Their pho is a hit or miss. Sometimes the broth is rich in flavor and some days it's bland. Addicted to this fried pork belly! Just the right flavor and crispy outside and juicy tender inside. It is a fatty cut, but you can pick your piece of meat. Love the spicy sauce they serve with it! Who wants regular rice when you can get sticky rice for less than $5?! It goes so well with their papaya salad (which is not shredded with a shredder but with a hand and knife because a it thick). After trying out this restaurant again, I have no choice but to update my review to 5 stars! It gets very busy during lunch time so expect a wait time unless you're there when they open. I just can't drink the Kool-Aid with the other reviewers on this one. It ain't that good. I know where to find better Hmong/Laotian food. Up to the counter to order one of Yang's signature menu items, Stuffed Wings. I had spent an hour convincing my wife that the restaurant was worth a try for this item alone. I had coerced her with promised pastries from Pancho Anaya Bakery (across the street) to take home after the meal. Well, no stuffed chicken wings. Only a few of the regular chicken wings abandoned in the heated tray. Noticeably picked through leaving the losers behind, like the nerds that get picked last for high school dodge ball. The sausage situation was similar. No egg rolls. Lots of mystery fish, wrapped in grilled stained foil, stacked high in the tray. Obviously not a desirable protein of choice by the patrons. Plenty of pork belly. It looked good, but pork fat and rice, just doesn't make my mouth water. My wife wanted to try the purple rice. That narrowed her selection down to the remaining sausage logs with purple sticky rice. I admit that the sausage looked deceivingly good, so I got one and a small beef Pho. Serve yourself tableware and condiments for the Pho were in the corner. Problem, no spoons, forks, etc. were available. Our food came out. I informed the server that there was none available. She went back to the kitchen and after a suspiciously long wait, brings freshly washed dining utensils. The sausage casings are stuffed with a coarsely chopped meat of some type. ??? It tasted good. Nicely seasoned. The first bite surprises with the unusual firm and coarse texture of the filling, and another surprise. Every bite comes with a "no chew 'em." Gristle, cartilage, unchewable bits of something that you tolerate during the first few bites. And then you decide that whatever these disgusting animal pieces are, need to be located and removed from your mouth. Enough of the sausage. The Pho had similar low-quality meat. The broth was flavorful and the basil, jalapeno slices, and onion made it even better. It was fair. There are very few reviewers that have written updated reviews, confirming that for most folks like me, it is a one and done visit. Let's start off by saying I'm JEALOUS little Hmong gems like this don't exist around the Kansas City area... To the Hmong community down in Tulsa, DON'T take this place for granted! I came down to Tulsa on a business for my job. Knowing there's a prominent Hmong community down here compared to KC, I searched up Hmong food and this is what popped up. Just 10 minutes away from my hotel, I got in my car and SPED the entire way here! xD The food is fantastic! It definitely hit cravings that I had and it was very well priced! Everything was fresh and hot! There were also a good amount of items to choose from as well, which I'll definitely have to try if I'm ever back in OK! I recommend the Pork Belly w/ Sticky Rice combo and you HAVE try a Naab Vam (Hmong Tapioca Milk Drink)!!! Not to mention, the young lady behind the counter was also super friendly and helpful! We were so full but could not stop eating. We also got some drinks we have never tried before. I had a white gourd drink that was a soft tasting very yummy flavor. Partner got a roasted coconut water quite good too. The price is reasonable and they serve a good amount of food. It can easily be two portions. Stuffed Chicken Wing: The chicken wing looked deliciousness and the texture color cover enough fish soy sauce. Pork belly: unfortunately, I said there was no juices in the poke belly, but cooked fatty skin, you know what it looked a crispy were too hard when I chewed, then I didn't like it. Disappointed. Purple Sticky Rice: I looked at these sticky rice ain't look beautiful color because I know it would supposed to dark purple with shiny violet color when it cooked. No taste on sweeter a bit... disappointed. I don't know if it would be improving to change the foods we will willing to eat in a future. Honestly, their menu look more dull to me, and they would have to cook more freshly meals before order. The service is friendly and quick and the food is delicious. We enjoyed a delicious lunch yesterday during our first visit to Yang's in east Tulsa. The counter service was very friendly and helpful. The prepared food was nicely displayed and the whole facility was spotlessly clean and bright, though not fancy at all. But the real draw here is the food. We mostly ordered items from the already prepared dishes and they were all wonderful. The roasted pork belly, which is sold by the pound, was the best I have ever had. The server asked if we preferred a portion that was fatty or lean. We opted for the lean and she carefully searched until she found a slab that had a high lean to fat ratio. Then she sliced it into bite-size pieces for us. The long skinny Hmong sausage was outstanding, especially when dipped into the spicy sauce that comes with it. The handmade springs rolls were excellent, and the chicken fried rice was up to par, but not much different from the standard. Next time we will try the purple sticky rice for a change of pace. The grilled chicken wings, sold by the piece,were very tasty and I found myself wishing I had ordered a few more. But then I bit into the stuffed chicken wings and decided they were even better. The stuffed wings are huge and somehow split open, filled with rice noodles, bits of meat, and vegetables then closed up and grilled while being basted with a savory sauce. They were absolutely delicious. Other items on the menu include whole roasted duck, BBQ pork, curry noodle soup (spicy), chicken noodle soup (mild), several fish dishes , and a few more items I can't recall. Yang's is located on the south side of 21st a little bit east of Garnett just past Nam Hai Oriental Market. As other reviewers have mentioned, the outside of the building is nondescript and looks a little sketchy, but don't let that stop you from going in. You will be glad you found this hidden little gem. I sure hope Tulsa will support them so they can continue to serve our community with their great food and friendly staff. read more
